The traditional classification of corals is dead, says Prof Andrew Baird, from James Cook University, who led a recent scientific journey along the Great Barrier Reef, uncovering treasure troves of new, unidentified coral species. New molecular tools allow us to reinvent a new classification system on the ashes of the old. Hence, the name we have given to the research: Project Phoenix, he said. These are exciting times to be a coral taxonomist. What this means, essentially, is that new methods of DNA testing can target regions of the coral genome that are relevant to the specific research interests, allowing scientists to zero in on novel variants and better differentiate species. Many current coral species are predicted to turn into multiple true species, linked by their actual DNA profiles rather than physical appearance. Aquarists, divers, marine biologists: Be ready to have all your existing reference works on stony coral genera and species become obsolete. Dr. Andrea Quattrini, curator of corals at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, developed the new genetic tool. She says it provides a way forward with plans to secure the future of coral reefs. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy131 Peter- Talks with Sicce Tip of the Week: If you are going into or already using one of the systems we talk about this week, take a look at a really clever tool we noticed over on Melev's Reef. For some sea anemones, however, it's actually quite literal. When starlet sea anemones eat more food, they sprout extra arms, according to a study published last week in Nature Communications. They are the first known species to grow entirely new limbs in response to consumption of food. These sea anemones show us that it is possible that nutrients are not converted into excess fat storage as it is the case in all mammals but instead transformed into a new body structure. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy130 Main Topic: Tank Size Selection: Upgrade or add to the collection Pt. 1 Where to start, upgrade, downsize or even add a new system. Big or Small? Let's talk tanks. While this topic is aimed at beginners, it should have something for everyone. Lesser known, however, are Brazil's tropical marine fishes; this is mostly because prior regulations kept some species entirely out of the aquarium trade, while others were readily available from other Caribbean sources. In the new policy, Brazil has created several common-sense processes for allowing the commercial exploitation of species that might otherwise not be permitted. This includes those that have yet to be formally described (mainly a problem with freshwater species), but also those that might otherwise exist on a red list of species that by default are not allowed for commercial collection and export, through a series of individual evaluations. Captive breeding also has prominent support in the new rules, and may be another pathway to market for species that would not otherwise be allowed for export. In addition, clear rules are laid out for the proper (and prohibited) collection methods of marine fishes. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy119 Peter- Divers Cut, Plant Coral off UAE Coast to Build Reef The divers, from the Fujairah Adventure Centre, are building artificial reefs they hope will spur a resurgence in sea life degraded over the years by climate change and development. The small team and other volunteers have planted more than 9,000 corals over about 600 square metres in the past year. Within five years, they hope to cover 300,000 square metres with 1.5 million corals. "It's a fertile environment for coral reefs, and this diversity has started spreading and has helped bring back sea life," diver Saeed al-Maamari told Reuters. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter119 Admin Profiles- Kyle Caminita- runs a small IT company in Hattiesburg, Mississippi taking care of mostly Medical Offices, CPAs, and Law Offices. He also started RadReefs last year which is a multi vendor coral marketplace. As for the hobby, he has been in it for 3 years now and currently have 3 systems running. A 210 mixed reef DT, his coral system consists of two low boys and a 100g Rubbermaid sump in his shop, and a little IM25 lagoon in his office. He loves the hobby, loves helping folks work through any tech or tank issues. Greg Cholewa- has been around aquariums most of his life. As a child, it was always freshwater. It wasn't until he was stationed over in Okinawa that he fell in love with all things coral reef related. He quickly had 3 tanks while over there, and then a fourth came. He had a mixture of corals, freshwater planted, axolotls, and cichlids. Once coming back stateside, one of the first things he established was a FOWLR as he knew he would be leaving again soon and could not justify a full blown reef. He is currently building out a WaterBox 130.4 that is plumbed to the basement where the sump, frag tank, and water mixing/change station all live and QT stations for coral and fish are also in the works. It has been a long process that is still ongoing. He really enjoys the planning of the build and trying to design everything out to make the easiest to maintain. Outside of equipment and the glass box, He try's to make sure everything else is custom and done by himself. The main focus is trying to have a very successful reef while attempting to keep everything as simple as possible. Some industry leaders and reefers may look down on the budget reefer at least in jest (I think we have all looked for a more affordable option at least a few times..). He loves LPS corals, high end mushrooms and zoas, eels, clownfish and anemones, and really everything this hobby has to offer. There is so much, there will always be something new. He really wants to thank my amazing wife for helping him take care of the animals, and putting up with all my spilled water over the years, she really loves the hobby too, which can be a blessing. Kevin DaCorte: Has kept freshwater aquariums throughout his childhood and has been reefing for about 4 years. His main display is a 40-gallon breeder mixed reef and keeps a variety of corals in the tank but recently has been getting into more zoas and euphyllia. The over 2000-page EIS had been produced by a group of ten West Hawaii aquarium fishers and the National Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, on their proposal to ask the DLNR to issue permits to the ten aquarium fishers. The proposed permits themselves were not before the BLNR for decision. The Supreme Court in 2017, in Umberger et. al vs. the Department of Land and Natural Resources, issued a decision requiring for the first time, chapter 343 environmental review for the issuance of permits required to use fine mesh nets for aquarium fishing. No permits have been issued since the 2017 decision, though aquarium fishing using other gear, considered less optimal for aquarium fishing but not regulated under Hawaiian law, continues. The EIS was an applicant-action rather than an agency-action, meaning it was proposed by the aquarium fishers, not the Department. After reviewing the applicant aquarium fishers' proposal and testimony and deliberating for over four hours, the BLNR determined that the EIS did not adequately disclose the potential environmental impacts from the issuance of ten aquarium fishing permits for West Hawaii. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy116 Admin Profiles: Nigel Shemanski manages the Reef News Network TikTok account. The finding suggests that some fish, including popular eating and aquarium species, might have a role to play in keeping the destructive pest population under control. The native starfish (Acanthaster solaris) is responsible for widespread damage to the Great Barrier Reef with an outbreak is currently underway. Aside from a mollusk called the Giant Triton (Charonia tritonis), identifying what eats it has been a challenging task. This study found through a unique DNA marker in fish gut content and fecal matter that a confirms that at least 18 coral reef fish species consume young or adult COT starfish on the reef. "Our findings might also solve a mystery -- why reef areas that are closed to commercial and recreational fishing tend to have fewer starfish than areas where fishing is allowed," said Dr Kroon. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy115 Peter- A new study reveals clear evidence highlighting the importance of fish biodiversity to the health of spectacular tropical coral reef ecosystems. However, the study's results show that even though strong relationships between diversity and a healthy ecosystem persist, human-driven pressures of warming oceans and invasive species still diminish ecosystems in various ways. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter115 Admin Profiles: Blaine Boone: Roles IG admin, FB group admin, sergent at arms Blaine is 29 and from Nashville TN, he has been in the reefing hobby for only 2 years so still fairly new. Now this same team has succeeded in spawning the first generation of corals they raised in aquariums. The focus of this successive spawning study producing the world's first F2 generation of aquarium corals was none other than the illustrious Acropora millepora, a widespread, fast growing and very colorful coral. Also, as a really interesting side note, some familiar equipment was used to recreate the environmental marker that induce coral spawning. In particular, Radion LEDs were used. I actually converted my smaller reef aquarium into a freshwater planted system, because it was in a more prominent area of the house, I couldn't stand looking at it. When the garden eels at a Tokyo aquarium remove their heads from the sand, they are usually confronted by pairs of human eyes staring back at them through the glass. But like other animals around the world, the eels at Sumida Aquarium are finding their environment transformed by the effects of the coronavirus outbreak. They also appear to be forgetting what humans look like. Concerned that the garden eels so named because their grass-like appearance when, en masse, they poke their heads out of the seabed could come to see visitors as a threat, the aquarium is asking people to get in touch in the form of a calming video calls. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy113 Peter- Bioluminescence might seem uncommon, even alien. But biologists think organisms evolved the ability to light up the dark as many as 50 different times, sending tendrils of self-powered luminosity coursing through the tree of life, from fireflies and vampire squids to lantern sharks and foxfire, a fungus found in rotting wood. Despite all this diversity, the general rules stay the same. Glowing in the dark or the deep takes two ingredients. You need some sort of luciferin, a molecule that can emit light. And you need an enzyme, luciferase, to trigger that reaction like the snapping of a glowstick. Some creatures delegate this chemistry to symbiotic bacteria. Others possess the genes to make their own versions of luciferin and luciferase. But then there's the golden sweeper, a reef fish that evolved a trick that hasn't been seen anywhere else, according to a study published Wednesday in Science Advances: It just gobbles up bioluminescent prey and borrows the entire kit. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter113 Tip of the Week: Black eggcrate is head and shoulders above white eggcrate for frag racks. The all white and black face makes the Snow Storm Clownfish very distinct from other white morphs like the Wyoming White Clownfish as pictured below. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy103 Peter- At a certain time in the future, you will suffer from reefer's boredom. It's inevitable, everyone goes through it... and the reasons are many the tank is doing too good and you don't want to change anything in fear of it crashing, or the tank crapped out and you don't want to look in its general direction at all, or perhaps you have other things going on and something simply has to be put on the back burner. Whatever that reason, the remedy is the same- you need to find some source of inspiration to get back into the hobby you truly cherish. You can watch a Netflix documentary about animals that make you never want to hike, swim, or dive in the dark again, take a long bike ride thinking about anything and everything that comes to your mind, or peep at a photo of somebody else's aquarium being awesome and get inspired by that experience. You can also casually lurk around the website of United States Patent and Trademark Office to see if any of the aquarium industry companies you know and follow filed for any new trademarks worth checking. Whether it is a filter sock, filter pad, or filter block, is up to you; but they all physically remove debris from your tank water. The mechanical filter media sits inside your filter unit and physically traps and strains any solid waste that passes through your filter system. Captive-bred mandarins represent a complete shift in the husbandry of these often difficult-to-keep fishes; while they are still slow, methodical, bottom-picking substrate feeders,captive-bred mandarins will arrive eating inanimate pellet feeds when properly weaned during the early rearing phases. Dragonet breeding is a challenging project that the dedicated home aquarist can take on, and with only Synchiropus splendidus in active commercial cultivation at the moment, there is an opportunity for several other species (including the less-seen Red Mandarin) to be produced as captive-bred offerings. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy92 Peter- Federal officials announced plans Monday to raise $100 million to fund projects to restore seven significant coral reef sites in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Mission: Iconic Reefs calls for restoring nearly 70 acres (28 hectares) of the Florida Reef Tract, one of the largest strategies ever proposed for coral restoration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter92 Listener Call Big T from Ma. Rabbitfish and Foxface are awesome options for reef tanks. They are prodigious grazers, peaceful tankmates, interesting to observe, fairly affordable and a bit outside the usual suspects for a reef tank. All of these characteristics make them ideal for the reefer looking for a unique addition to their system. Researchers at Australia's Southern Cross University are now preparing to put the latest into action, with millions of turbo-charged coral babies being readied to take root in the reef's most degraded areas. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy90 Peter- The relationship between bacteria and Corals has recently become a hot topic on Reef2Reef as a result of a research paper recently published in the Nature journal. The study estimates that about 1/3 of all corals worldwide are infected with this newly discovered bacterium which researchers named, Candidatus Aquarickettsia rohweri. The bacterium can be found in a number of corals that we commonly keep in our aquariums including, Acropora, Goniopora, Montipora, Seriatopora and Stylophora species. Additionally, it can also be found in anemones. Researches also discovered the bacterium can be transmitted through coral eating parasitic snails and transported through seawater whereby it can potentially infect corals when tissue damage is present. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter90 Main Topic: ORA, ORA, ORA.... The update brings some nice tech along with a bit of a facelift for an excellent line of lights. The new models have more LEDs, more PAR and more spread over the aquarium. They will also have newly designed optics so you can expect better color blending from the LED diodes. The housing is also taking on a facelift over the previous AI Hydra generations. The Hydra 32HD and 64HD fixtures also promise to be more water resistant. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy89 Peter- Despite mass coral bleaching events in the summers of 2016 and 2017 that badly damaged parts of the reef, much of the marine park roughly the size of Japan continues to thrive. Alarming headlines across the globe may have deterred tourism, but with over 2,900 individual coral reefs and 300 continental islands, a visit to the largest living structure on Earth remains an experience of a lifetime. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter89 Main Topic: Stand and Deliver The aquarium stand is often overlooked or at least glossed over as key piece of equipment. The stand is a functional part of setup that can be completely utilitarian, simply designed and functional, all the way up to a work of art that is just as much about the form as it is about the function and anywhere in between! The former Navy fuel barge and its monstrous passenger were placed underwater in order to jumpstart a new coral ecosystem, while also serving as a cutting-edge education center for marine researchers and local students from the surrounding British Virgin Islands. The project is titled the BVI Art Reef, and aims to use sculptures like the porous kraken as a base to grow transplanted coral. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy88 Peter- A new article published in the journal Scientific Reports reveals 44% of the colonies of Didemnum vexillum -a marine invertebrate tagged as invasive species- in the Ebro Delta (Tarragona, Spain) are formed by gene chimera, that is, cells with different gene pool. According to the study, this ability to create chimera could be a determining factor to promote genetic diversity and the colonizing success of this exotic species in natural ecosystems worldwide. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter88 Main Topic: Welcome to BristlewormMania: Bristleworms (or bristle worms) are segmented worms with bristly tufts extending from each of their segments. They can grow very largeup to 24 inches in a tankbut most are between one and six inches long. They are nocturnal and tend to stay in or under live rock or in the your substrate. You may never see a bristleworm in your tank unless you look for them at night with a flashlight or expose them by moving a rock or displacing the substrate.
