"At long last, Mr. President.”—Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill This is the story of the second year of WWII and the United States' response. As the war enters its second full year, things are looking dire for Britain: Germany has forced France into submission, the Blitz is in full swing, and the cash-strapped nation is running out of money to pay for US aid. Lend-Lease, or H.R. 1776, is the proposed solution; it'll allow Franklin to transfer munitions to “any country whose defense the President deems vital to the defense of the US.” But there is stiff opposition. Is the language too dictatorial? Does it make entering the war unavoidable? As Americans discuss the bill across the country, famed aviator Charles “Lucky Lindy” Lindbergh will argue against it, while recently defeated 1940 presidential candidate Wendell Willkie will argue for it. Nor are they the only ones disagreeing: workers are striking in record numbers. Building an “arsenal of democracy” means labor and business will have to settle their differences. Meanwhile, as FDR and Winston Churchill secretly meet for the first time in the frigid climes of the northern Atlantic, the Army and Navy are drilling down to brass tacks—what would it really mean if America enters the war? How many men would the nation need in uniform? Could American production cope with wartime demands? Pragmatic American leaders are preparing and planning just in case, mostly with their eyes on Germany … but increasingly on Japan. Relations are eroding swiftly. Perhaps Uncle Sam's greatest immediate threat isn't across the Atlantic but the Pacific … ____ Connect with us on HTDSpodcast.com and go deep into episode bibliographies and book recommendations join discussions in our Facebook community get news and discounts from The HTDS Gazette come see a live show get HTDS merch or become an HTDS premium member for bonus episodes and other perks. It was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust. Since then, we've witnessed several fronts of war against Israel, a terrifying rise in global antisemitism, and an effort to isolate Israel diplomatically, culturally, and economically, and much more. To reflect on some of the major events and the cultural currents that have swept the world since October 7, 2023, Dan sat down with Sam Harris for a conversation being released as a simulcast both on Call me Back as well as Sam's podcast, Making Sense. Sam is a philosopher, neuroscientist, author, and public intellectual. He focuses on topics of rationality, religion, politics, and ethics, and has been a fierce critic of the rise in radical, fundamentalist islam. Trauma is not a single moment. It is an ongoing dialogue between your brain, body, and environment. In this conversation, Dr. Mbemba Jabbi explains how neuroplasticity and affective neuroscience help us understand protective patterns like hypervigilance, shutdown, and dissociation. We explore the roles of the insula, amygdala, and cingulate networks in sensing threat, shaping emotions, and connecting brain states with bodily signals such as heart, gut, and breath. Dr. Jabbi also discusses research that associates early childhood trauma, including sexual trauma, with higher inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein, while emphasizing that biology interacts with environment and change is possible. You will hear how sensory training, co-regulation, psychotherapy, and supportive practices may help repattern responses over time. This is a grounded, science-informed look at why survival strategies make sense in context and how compassionate, skills-based work can support nervous system health. If you or your clients live with complex developmental trauma, this episode offers language, frameworks, and first steps that respect lived experience and prioritize safety. The insula, amygdala, and cingulate form networks that integrate sensory input with bodily responses. Protective outputs like numbness or shutdown are learned adaptations that supported safety. Studies associate early childhood trauma with elevated inflammation markers, while outcomes are shaped by environment and support. Neuroplasticity means skills, relationships, and practice can help repattern responses over time. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the current state of the MBA admissions season. Last week, Harvard released all its Round 1 interview invites. This week, UNC / Kenan Flagler and Georgia / Terry have Round 1 application deadlines. Cambridge / Judge and SMU / Cox have Round 2 application deadlines, and London Business School and IESE are scheduled to release their Round 1 interview invites. Graham highlighted several upcoming events being hosted by Clear Admit in October, including a Real Humans series and a series focused on MBA programs in different regions of the United States. Signups for all these events are here, https://www.clearadmit.com/events Graham also highlighted our next livestream AMA, scheduled for Tuesday, October 28; here's the link to Clear Admit's YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/cayoutubelive. Graham noted two recently published MBA admissions articles. The first focuses on the ongoing topic of H-1B visas, and the second summarizes all the top MBA programs' in-person events for October. Graham also highlighted two admissions tips that focus on the key interview questions all MBA candidates should be ready for, and a best practice for preparing (hint: don't script your responses!). Finally, Graham highlighted a Real Humans piece that focuses on MBA students in Wharton's Class of 2027. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is trying to use the MBA to transition from a transportation-related role to a career in consumer-packaged goods. They also want to switch geographies within the U.S. This week's second MBA applicant is a chemical engineering graduate who now works in Wealth Management. We worry their 655 GMAT does not fully represent their aptitude. The final MBA candidate has a very strong profile, overall, but their post MBA goals need more development. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

The extensive research literature on race has paid little attention to Armenians. Between the two world wars, they had to prove that they were free white persons to ensure their naturalization in the United States, while in Nazi Germany they needed to document that they were stakeholders of the Aryan race to safeguard their existence. Vartan Matiossian's book is the first comprehensive account of a mostly untold story of dehumanization and racism in Europe and America that enhanced the racial and moral profiling of Armenians as undesirables. The Color of Choice: The Armenians and the Politics of Race in the United States and Germany (1890-1945) (Brill, 2025) frames this development within the context of the debates on whiteness and immigration in the United States culminating in the Immigration Act of 1924 and the xenophobic discourse in Germany before and during Nazism likening Armenians to Jews. There is a lot of violence in politics right now. Israel's war on Gaza has resulted in thousands of children and innocent civilians being killed, Russia is continuing to pound Ukraine with impunity, while the United States has experienced the return of political assassinations. The far right is no stranger to actual political violence, but Jacob Abolafia argued in a recent essay in The Point magazine that the left has been guilty of intellectualising violence in ways divorced from real politics. From seeing Hamas' October 7 th attacks as an inevitable and even justified result of Israel's colonial oppression, to celebrating the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangione, and the gleeful reaction of some to the recent assassination of far right activist Charlie Kirk, the left can be seen to tolerate or even endorse political violence by appeals to philosophers like Franz Fanon, without fully appreciating the political consequences of such violence. So, when is political violence justified, if ever? What alternatives are there when democratic politics and non-violent resistance fail? And is the appeal to violence restricting the left's political vision?Jacob Abolafia is a political theorist who writes on the history of political thought and critical theory, and an anti-occupation activist in Israel. He teaches philosophy at Ben-Guirion University of the Negev. He is the author of the book The Prison Before the Panopticon: Incarceration in Ancient and Modern Political Philosophy. His essay Violence and the Left was recently published in The Point magazine. If you enjoyed the episode, please leave us a rating and a review on Apple Podcasts. This podcast is created in partnership with The Philosopher, the UK's longest running public philosophy journalm founded in 1923.
The current administration has essentially declared war on renewable energy. President Trump stated recently that his administration will not approve solar or wind power projects. Renewable companies are unlikely to receive permits that were once a normal course of business. Now, the United States is likely to struggle to meet its growing demand for electricity […]

Newt talks with renowned TV journalist and bestselling author Bill O’Reilly about his latest book, “Confronting Evil.” The book, which quickly became a New York Times bestseller, explores the actions of some of history's most notorious figures, including Genghis Khan, Caligula, Henry VIII, and modern figures like Putin and the Mexican drug cartels. O'Reilly explains his motivation for writing about the concept of evil, noting a perceived rise in malevolent behavior globally and particularly in the United States. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing and confronting evil, which he believes is often ignored in modern society. Their conversation also touches on current global issues, such as the influence of the Mexican drug cartels and the threat posed by Vladimir Putin, whom O'Reilly describes as a dangerous psychopath. He also highlights the need for a collective reassessment of how society deals with evil and the role of leadership in addressing these challenges.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(00:00) Weather and Golf Post Ryder Cup This chapter brings us to the picturesque Pine Canyon in Flagstaff, Arizona, where we share a mix of personal experiences and reflections on recent golf events. We recount the unexpected hailstorms and flooding in Arizona, painting a vivid picture of the unusual weather conditions that recently swept through the region. Amidst this backdrop, I took the opportunity to savor a quiet day on the golf course, capturing videos and appreciating the scenic beauty before the onset of winter. We then shift our focus to the Ryder Cup, highlighting the challenges faced by even the world's best golfers in alternate shot formats. The discussion emphasizes the psychological pressures of playing not just for oneself, but also for a partner and country. We explore how the European team's familiarity with match play contributed to their superior preparation and performance, leading to a decisive advantage in the initial rounds against the U.S. team. (12:08) Ryder Cup Crowd Behavior Discussion This chapter takes us through a candid conversation about golf, regional attitudes, and sportsmanship. Jeff Smith joins from Flagstaff, Arizona, as we discuss the challenge of playing at Bethpage Black, one of the toughest courses. We reminisce about Michael Michaelides, who worked there and his New York grit. The discussion turns to the notorious behavior of some New York fans during the Ryder Cup, reflecting on the negative stereotypes of the "ugly American" and sharing personal anecdotes from living in New York. We explore the tension between being a sports fan and maintaining respect, especially when witnessing the unprecedented face-off between the world's top two golfers. As someone who spent my teenage years in New York City, I share insights into the sometimes brusque nature of New Yorkers, illustrating the contrast with an amusing story about our move from Boston. (16:34) Golf Techniques This chapter offers a delightful blend of sports commentary and musical nostalgia. We share our appreciation for the professionalism of broadcasters Terry Gannon and Dan Hicks, while also distinguishing Dan Hicks from the country singer of the same name, known for his hit "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away." Our discussion then transitions to the golf world, focusing on Brad Faxon's insightful commentary and the notable absence of Keegan Bradley from a major tournament despite being the 13th ranked player globally. We speculate on the challenges and pressures that might have influenced his decision not to play, and reflect on the relentless nature of armchair critics. Additionally, we ponder the minute differences in skill and precision that can determine success in golf, particularly during high-stakes competitions like the Ryder Cup. (32:07) Sound Analysis and Sporting Events This chapter explores the nuances of sound in golf, particularly how experienced caddies like Jim "Bones" McKay can discern the difference between an average and a perfect strike, as demonstrated through the example of PGA Tour winner Tyler Duncan. We also touch on travel experiences, discussing scenic and not-so-scenic routes across the United States, from the engaging landscapes of Sedona to the tedious drive from Phoenix to Palm Springs. Additionally, we reflect on the recent disappointment at the Ryder Cup, despite high expectations, and share plans for an upcoming road trip across the country. Alongside these discussions, there is an exciting mention of attending a concert, with a hint of humor regarding who the performers might be. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Award-winning political theorist William Barclay joins Josh to discuss his latest article, “Trump, South Korea and the international purge of right-wing politics.” In this compelling episode, they explore how South Korean President Lee and the Democratic Party of Korea are suppressing right-wing ideologies in South Korea. They also examine a similar trend unfolding in countries such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. The discussion highlights how the American right is responding to this global wave of opposition, particularly as it has regained political influence in the U.S. Additionally, they offer insights into how right-wing movements can effectively navigate and counter this growing ideological oppression. Across the world, belief in God continues to be widespread and, among philosophers, has long been considered one solution to the problems of the world's origin, fine-tuned nature, and purpose. However, in the West, very few people have considered alternative concepts of God credible. That, though, may be beginning to change. One such alternative – pantheism – tells us that the universe and God are one and the same thing. It challenges conventional ideas about divine agency and the coherence of traditional theism, and invites us to reconsider what we mean when we speak of ‘God'. To explore God's nature, in this special episode, I'll be joined by two guests: Tim Mawson and Asha Lancaster-Thomas. Dr Mawson is Edgar Jones Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at St Peter's College, University of Oxford. He has published five books and over fifty papers in the philosophy of religion. Dr Lancaster-Thomas is Teacher of Philosophy at Atlanta Classical Academy, USA, and has published widely on the philosophy of religion – most recently exploring alternative concepts of God, including the one we'll be debating today. Tim Mawson will be arguing in favour of traditional theism – the view that God and the world are not identical. Asha Lancaster-Thomas will be defending pantheism – the view that they are. What are the implications of identifying God with the universe? Can such a view still provide the kind of moral and metaphysical grounding traditionally associated with belief in a transcendent creator? Or – by dragging God down from the heaven's – do we diminish the divine and its explanatory power? This episode is generously supported by The John Templeton Foundation, through The Panpsychism and Pan(en)theism Project (62683). “The Philippines isn't the president, it isn't the government. The Philippines is the people. Our role as Filipino Americans living in the diaspora is to stand with them. Tama na. Enough.” Politics is divided, institutions are fragile, and truth feels up for sale. Sounds familiar? Here's the twist — we're not talking about America, we're talking about the Philippines. With over 110 million people, it's one of the largest democracies on Earth — a nation with deep ties to the U.S. that most of us are not taught in school. If recent decades have taught us anything - it mirrors the challenges we face at home in the U.S. today: corruption, disinformation, and the erosion of trust in power. One might say it's a canary in the coal mine, which many Filipinos, and Filipino-Americans have been calling attention to those who will listen. And since October is Filipino American History Month, FrieMMd of the Pod Lisa Angulo Reid, co-founder of Dear Flor stopped by for a chat. Lisa recently penned a Substack post “Fighting for a Home That Isn't Mine” - we continued a longer conversation we've been having - ranging from her essay, corruption, diaspora identity, her calling, the economic potential on both sides of the ocean. and what it means to fight for a home you no longer live in but still carry inside... Celebrated historian of science and author of Merchants of Doubt Naomi Oreskes exposes how powerful corporations distort science to protect profits, by using scientists who seek to promote their personal ideologies. She draws the lines between climate denial, food system disinformation, and the fight to preserve soil-based organic farming. This conversation is a call to defend both science and farming integrity against corporate control.https://realorganicproject.org/naomi-oreskes-true-cost-of-doubt-243The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/directoryWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Host Jeff opens this Sunday broadcast with the show's signature mix of Scripture and geopolitical analysis — starting with the Word on Word game (Psalm 4:8 vs. Isaiah 55:6) and moving quickly into a wide‑ranging briefing on domestic and international developments. He explains why a single photo from a state visit and repeated uses of the phrase "his excellency" matter to his broader theory about shifting authority and sovereignty. Jeff dissects a purported "Declaration of Authority and Summons" that circulated ahead of a high‑profile meeting of military leaders, calling attention to unusual language such as "the United States for America" and "His Excellency of the Western Kingdom." He connects that document to recent court rulings, the government shutdown, and personnel changes at the top of the military and federal agencies — raising questions about legal authority, Navy JAGs in Washington, tribunal activity, and the reach of executive power. The episode also surveys global flashpoints: a controversial gun buyback and speech‑restriction measures in Canada, reports of legal and cultural shifts in the UK and across Europe, and the spread of government digital ID programs. Jeff ties these developments into a broader theme that some governments are showing their hand, and he explains how Russia, NATO, and other actors factor into the current geopolitical chessboard. Israel receives extended attention: Jeff describes Trump's treatment of Benjamin Netanyahu, the growing two‑state discussion, mass protests inside Israel, and intelligence claims that raise the risk of escalatory moves against Iran. He offers a speculative scenario — including the possibility of a false‑flag event or an attack near the Temple Mount — while framing it as one of several outcomes to watch as Israeli politics and regional alliances shift. As a counterpoint to fear and sensationalism, Jeff plays a clip from comedian Jim Brewer about how nonstop media coverage "steals your energy," ramps up fear, and drives people away from faith. Jeff endorses that message and emphasizes worship, prayer, and spiritual readiness as defensive tools: "peace through victory" is his refrain, urging listeners to don the armor of God, preserve their spiritual energy, and stay battle‑ready in troubled times. Key takeaways: close attention to military and executive moves in Washington, fast‑moving geopolitical developments (especially involving Israel and Western allies), and the episode's central pastoral call — resist fear, protect your moral and spiritual energy, and rely on worship and faith as the primary response. Today I have the honor of speaking with longtime activist Silky Shah, Executive Director of the Detention Watch Network, about her new, and extremely important book, Unbuild Walls: Why Immigrant Justice Needs Abolition. Shah provides a critical discussion about the intersection between detention, the prison industrial complex, and anti-immigrant racism. She explains how this relationship is hardly new, but stretches back at least to the Reagan presidency and through Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Biden. Given the durability of this connection, Shah makes an altogether convincing case that reform does not work, and that abolition is called for. Her book and her activism give us inspirating examples of such work in the past and present, and for the future.Silky Shah is the Executive Director of Detention Watch Network, a national coalition building power to abolish immigration detention in the United States. She has worked as an organizer on issues related to immigration detention, the prison industrial complex, and racial and migrant justice for nearly 20 years.
The contemporaneous movements for human rights that Soviet rights defenders and the Black Panthers waged during the 1960s are analysed in a comparative fashion here for the very first time. The book also examines the extra-legal measures that both the KGB and FBI employed to destroy them. The Black Panthers and the Soviets: A Comparative History of Human Rights Movements (Bloomsbury, 2025) by Dr. Meredith Roman innovatively compares Soviet human rights activists' exposure of the workings of the Soviet police state with the miniature, city-level surveillance police states that the Black Panthers exposed as operating across the United States. It illuminates the legal tactics of counter-surveillance that Soviet rights defenders and the Black Panthers employed as a means of restraining acts of state-sanctioned violence. The book also highlights how the U.S. production of knowledge about Soviet 'dissidents' reified white supremacist, anti-communist notions of dissent, human rights, and state violence that facilitated the repression of the Black Panthers and the mass incarceration of African Americans as criminals.Dr. Roman disrupts the enduring Cold War binaries of authoritarianism-democracy and oppression-freedom that obscure our understanding of the complex, overlapping histories of these two superpowers. Dr. Roman convincingly argues that the Soviet rights defenders and the Black Panthers' vast documentation of domestic human rights abuses and the repressive measures that they faced for mobilizing to end them serve as an important societal reminder; they reaffirm that genuine democracy and the safeguarding of human rights are incompatible with authoritarian practices, the conditions of racial capitalism, and the ideology of national security. A fresh, concise roadmap for U.S. grand strategy in a multipolar world For the past thirty years, post-Cold War triumphalism and a desire to reshape the world have defined U.S. foreign policy. But the failures of the global war on terror, the return of conflict to Europe, and growing tensions with China all suggest that this approach to the world is flawed. For the United States--the country that has ruled the international system largely alone since 1991--this moment is particularly perilous. Can policymakers adapt American foreign policy to better fit the twenty-first century, and in doing so avoid the pitfalls and excesses of the past three decades? In this book, Emma Ashford proposes a return to a more pragmatic, realist set of strategic principles, ones better suited for the emerging multipolar world, that would pursue narrower U.S. interests, cultivate the capabilities of friendly states, and emphasize room for maneuver over rigid alliances. In this she provides a valuable counterpoint to today's liberal internationalist consensus, as well as a road map for policymakers who seek to change the course of U.S. foreign policy. In a nation whose Constitution purports to speak for "We the People", too many of the stories that powerful Americans tell about law and society include only We the Men. A long line of judges, politicians, and other influential voices have ignored women's struggles for equality or distorted them beyond recognition by wildly exaggerating American progress. Even as sexism continues to warp constitutional law, political decision making, and everyday life, prominent Americans have spent more than a century proclaiming that the United States has already left sex discrimination behind.Professor Jill Elaine Hasday's We the Men: How Forgetting Women's Struggles for Equality Perpetuates Inequality (Oxford University Press, 2025) is the first book to explore how forgetting women's struggles for equality—and forgetting the work America still has to do—perpetuates injustice, promotes complacency, and denies how generations of women have had to come together to fight for reform and against regression. Professor Hasday argues that remembering women's stories more often and more accurately can help the nation advance toward sex equality. These stories highlight the persistence of women's inequality and make clear that real progress has always required women to disrupt the status quo, demand change, and duel with determined opponents.America needs more conflict over women's status rather than less. Conflict has the power to generate forward momentum. Patiently awaiting men's spontaneous enlightenment does not. Transforming America's dominant stories about itself can reorient our understanding of how women's progress takes place, focus our attention on the battles that are still unwon, and fortify our determination to push for a more equal future. What unites America, it used to be said, is a common commitment to “freedom”. But in our disunited times, it's worth remembering that two incompatible versions of freedom have actually divided rather than brought the United States together. As the historian Nicholas Buccola notes in his intriguing new book One Man's Freedom, these competing freedoms are represented in the thinking of the two icons of modern American conservatism and liberalism: Barry Goldwater and Martin Luther King. For Goldwater, freedom meant liberation from government interference—the right to be left alone to pursue economic success without federal meddling. For King, it meant empowerment—ensuring people had genuine capacity to participate fully in society. And as Buccola demonstrates, these competing visions persist in today's debates over everything from healthcare to voting rights. When conservatives champion ‘medical freedom' to refuse vaccines while liberals demand ‘reproductive freedom' through government-protected abortion access, they're not just disagreeing on policy—they're wielding incompatible definitions of freedom itself. When some see voter ID laws as protecting electoral freedom while others view them as destroying it, they're replaying the Goldwater-King divide: Is freedom merely the absence of federal interference, or does it require active measures to ensure everyone can meaningfully participate? Two freedoms, two Americas—no wonder the United States now feels so bitterly divided. 1. Freedom Isn't One ThingGoldwater championed “negative freedom” (freedom from government interference), while King advocated “positive freedom” (empowerment to actually participate in society). Both men claimed to seek “authentic liberalism,” but their visions were fundamentally incompatible. You can't just say you're “for freedom” without specifying which kind.2. Goldwater's Consequential SilenceThroughout his career, Goldwater had numerous opportunities to speak out on civil rights from his libertarian perspective but repeatedly chose silence. His refusal to use what King called “the moral power” of leadership to support racial justice—even while claiming personal opposition to segregation—helped set a pattern for the modern conservative movement's approach to race.3. The 1964 Pivot PointThe 1964 Republican Convention was a watershed moment when race and “extremism” tore the party apart. When Goldwater sided with the far right and voted against the Civil Rights Act in the name of “freedom,” it drove Black Republicans like George Parker from the party and reshaped American political coalitions in ways that persist today.4. Economics Was Central to the DivideKing saw Goldwater's economic philosophy as almost as dangerous as his stance on civil rights. While Goldwater focused on protecting economic freedom from “big government,” King advocated for an economic bill of rights that would address inequality across racial lines. This wasn't just about race—it was about whether economic empowerment is necessary for genuine freedom.5. These Divisions Persist in 2025The Goldwater-King debate isn't historical trivia. Today's arguments about the role of government, economic inequality, and racial justice still break along these same philosophical lines. When politicians invoke “freedom,” they're usually choosing sides in this 60-year-old debate without acknowledging that their opponents are using the same word to mean something entirely different.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication.
