Sophie Salveson survived a stroke at 19. It's not the way any freshman wants to end their first year of college. She was a writer, actor, and singer. The stroke stole her right side limbs, her speech, and her access to language. Over the past 10 years she fought back through PT, OT, speech therapy. She learned to stand, walk and speak again. And she continues to make progress. In the previous episode (http://strokecast.com/ExpandedPractice) I spoke with Marabeth Quinn, Sophie's Mom, and Danielle Stoller, one of Sophie's Physical Therapists. This week, we hear from Sophie and Marabeth and learn more about Sophie's journey. If you don't see the audio player below, visit http://Strokecast.com/Sophie. Click here for a machine-generated transcript Song Many people with aphasia find it easier to sing than to speak. Early treatment sometimes involves getting folks to sing their name or sing a greeting. Or even sing a song deeply embedded in their memory, like Happy Birthday. It has to do with the way music and song live in different part of the brain. Aphasia isn't the only place music as an impact. In episode 106, I spoke with Brian Harris of Medrhythms about his work using music to bypass limitations of the motor cortex and help people significantly improve their gait. This is an amazing video of Sophie from 2020. You can hear her sing, "A Change in Me" from Beauty and the Beast. Now, I really want to hear Sophie's Eponine. Maggie and Michael Sophie isn't the only stroke survivor with a passion for theater. I talked with Maggie in episode 38. Since then she has acted in a theater company fill with folks with disabilities. She continues to make progress on her documentary, The Great Now What. Here's the trailer: Michael Schutt was on the show in episode 124 talking about creating his solo show to share his stroke story. COVID lock downs meant planned performances didn't happen. He pivoted it into a radio play available on line. You can listen at http://ALessonInSwimming.com. Sophie's Book Recommendations The first book Sophie really read for pleasure after her stroke was "Shatter Me," by Tahereh Mafi.* It came with a powerful endorsement -- her sister's. And connecting about the book with her sister was a powerful incentive to read it, no matter what it took. Sophie's current favorites include "Good Girl's Guide to Murder," by Holly Jackson and "Elsewhere," by Gabrielle Zevin. * Pick up a copy or find them at your library and tell Sophie what you like about her favorites. Hack of the Week Keep trying. Speaking with aphasia is tough, but the only way out is through the key is to keep trying and to keep working on it. I've found it best top to try doing a thing with my affected hand three times before switching to my unaffected side. By trying three times, I'm reminding my brain that my left hand is still there and has a job to do. By stopping after three failed attempts, I stave off frustration and can try again another day. Links Where do we go from here? Connect with Sophie on Instagram or email and check out the links above. Share Sophie's story with someone you know by giving them the link http://Strokecast.com/Sophie Subscribe to the Strokecast newsletter at http://Strokecast.com/New Don't get best…get better.

Episode 191: Through professional and personal life changes, actor Katie Cassidy has focused on self-love and an NFT drop to encourage female empowerment. Guest Biography Katie Cassidy is best known for her work in film and television. Most recently, for her portrayal of the iconic comic book character, Laurel Lance/Black Canary, on The CW’s long-running hit series “Arrow” (2012-2020). Upon ending the show (November 2019) and her two short years of marriage (Jan 2020), the world shut down due to the Coronavirus pandemic, giving Katie the time and space to look inward and focus on herself. Over the course of the last 12 months, Katie has spent the time learning how to love herself (ME), explore the persona she presents to her fans and audience (SHE), and get to know how the two come together to form (WE). Hence the title of her NFT drop and portrait series “ME. SHE. WE.” Always fascinated with technology, cryptocurrency, and newly emerging NFT’s, Katie decided to bring her idea of ME. SHE. WE. to life with a series of digital portraits, carving out a whole new genre of art with a cotton canvas, black and white paint, and the human body as her medium (shot by The Riker Brothers). Excited about this new venture, Katie is dedicated to using this new platform to encourage female empowerment, self-love, acceptance, and has pledged a portion of the proceeds to benefit The Rape Foundation, Women’s Global Empowerment Fund, and LifeWay Network. In this episode, you'll learn: Going straight to work vs attending college. Video games and why they're a part of Katie's characters on set. How Katie got into Cryptocurrencies and became one of the first celebrities to drop an NFT. Show notes: http://www.inspiredmoney.fm/191 Find more from our guest: OpenSea - ME. SHE. WE. Going through our things and decluttering is a pain in the butt that few of us want to do. But having clutter inhibits our efficiency and costs us time. It takes us longer to find things, and longer to find space for things that need to be put away. In this episode, we talk about some simple and continuous decluttering systems so that we can declutter without having to do any big downsizing days. Our community guest this week is Brittney Lynn, the CEO of the PR firm at BrittneyLLynn.com. She's in the process of selling her house to move into a van and embark on living the #VanLife (talk about downsizing!). We discuss her fears of moving into a tiny kitchen and having to cook in a differently-equipped space.I am enjoying hearing your listener tips - keep them coming! If you want to leave a tip for us, call 321-325-0607 and leave a voicemail with your tip.The meal plan for this week features five sheet pan meals. These are all meals that are made on a single sheet pan. So, you could say we're downsizing your cooking equipment too this week! Subscribe at COOKtheSTORY to get the meal plan, recipe links, and printable grocery lists sent your way.Have a great day! xoPodcast Guest: Brittney Lynn from BrittneyLLynn.comFollow her van life adventures on Instagram at Life With The Lynns Quick Tip of the Week: Keep a bag, box, or a bin in any space you think you would like to eventually downsize or declutter. I keep a box in the closet so when I find anything that no longer fits or I don't wear, I can immediately add it to the box. My closet stays decluttered without me having to spend any time doing it!Deeper Time Management Thought: Having a continuous decluttering system makes a habit of organizing clutter and makes it easier to stay organized. Limiting what you bring into the house or having a bin for temporary storage for things keeps your house presentable and organized. For example, before adding a new piece of clothing to your closet, discard an item first.Links mentioned in the show:Sheet Pan Shrimp BoilSheet Pan Lemon Chicken and Polenta DinnerSheet Pan Salmon DinnerSheet Pan Sausage and Pepper HoagiesSheet Pan Steak, Potatoes, and Veg Dinner

Understanding user’s needs continues to be one of the top challenges for enterprise and industrial product leaders. And although the practice of user research has been around for a while, most of the information out there seems to focus on B2C products. This is why I’m very excited to be joined by Steve Portigal joining us on the show today! My guest today is Steve Portigal, an experienced user researcher, author, and consultant who helps organizations build more mature user research practices. In our conversation, Steve shares how he approaches B2B research and we discuss the complexities of doing user research in a B2B context, the challenges of getting access to users, the need to focus on understanding customers’ pain (as opposed to only focusing on usability), and how to influence your organization to conduct more research. Steve also shares his advice on how to build a practice that encourages ongoing user research. This is a very important episode that no product leader should miss! Episode Details: Build more mature user-research practices with Steve Portigal: “If you’re just testing the usability and not the desirability or the usefulness, then you’re not going to uncover the fundamentals flaws that may exist in those initial assumptions.” — Steve Portigal About Steve Portigal: Steve Portigal is a consultant who helps organizations to build more mature user research practices. Over the past 20 years, he has interviewed hundreds of people, including families eating breakfast, hotel maintenance staff, architects, radiologists, home-automation enthusiasts, credit-default swap traders, and rock musicians. His work has informed the development of mobile devices, medical information systems, music gear, wine packaging, financial services, corporate intranets, videoconferencing systems, and music accessories. Steve is the author of two books, Interviewing Users: How to Uncover Compelling Insights and Doorbells, Danger, and Dead Batteries: User Research War Stories. Additionally, he is the host of the podcast, Dollars to Donuts. Topics We Discuss in this Episode: Steve’s career background and the work he does today as an experienced user researcher What a user researcher does and why it is important Invaluable tips for user researchers Why companies struggle to understand their customers’ challenges How a company can become more user-centered How to enable a culture that empowers everyone Why you may want to bring on a user researcher or an external expert The nuances of being a team player and contributing to the success of the company How to challenge baseline assumptions in order to move forward and grow as a company The differences between B2C and B2B user research The challenges of user research (and how to overcome them) Why user research is not only incredibly invaluable but needs to be figured out for your company Why culture is critical to research How to support leaders in helping transform the organization’s mindset into a customer-centric culture Proactive vs. reactive research Product Leader Tip of the Week: Keep in mind, user research is a skill. You can read about it, take classes, listen to podcasts, but you also have to practice. Practice can include: knowing when to do research, knowing what research to do, how to go about actually doing the research, learning how to leverage the research that you’ve done, and learning how to help others understand the research. And be sure to give yourself the chance to get better. All of this takes time. Be compassionate and understand that research is not just binary; there are many, many facets of it. Steve’s self-declared mission is to “reduce pain in the workplace”. When it comes to that mission, Steve pays special attention to certain aspects of the work. When we recognize that a great chunk of our awake-time is spent at work, we start to understand that work should be aligned with who we are, and that’s where Steve focuses his work and how he defines success as a Scrum Master. Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: “Keep talking and no one explodes” a retrospective game Steve loves Agile games, and in this episode, he shares one game that, according to his description, helps us practice “solving big problems in a timebox”. In this episode, we talk about the success of a Scrum Master at three different levels, the individual, the team, and the organization. We explore some of the metrics that can be used at each of those levels to assess and reflect on the success of the Scrum Master role. Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: Keep retrospective actions top of mind One of the aspects that makes retrospectives fail sometimes, is that the teams don’t focus on acting on the improvement ideas they’ve already collected. In this segment, we talk about how to help teams follow-up and act on the improvement ideas that surface in the retrospectives. About Denniz Dönmez Denniz has both huge academic and practical experience. Podcasts Let's talk about 3 podcasts in this podcast. After all, the reason, we're podcasters is we like talking about our passions. I mentioned in the previous episode of this show that Microsoft has new technology to create live subtitles as a presenter speaks. I talked about it much more extensively in episode 65 of 2-Minute Talk Tips. You can learn more here. I used the tool to create a transcript of this episode. It's not perfect, but if you'd rather read than listen, click here. I joined Cam Compton on the Hand In Hand show on the Strokefocus network. You can listen to that episode here. You can also explore Strokefocus.net in more detail here. Cam and I talked about our stories, the importance of support groups, keys to recovery, mindset, and exercise. I also appeared on Lyn Henderson's Inside Knowledge podcast. Lyn's show is all about resilience. Based in New Zealand, she interviews folks from around the world to learn how they've overcome challenges to live the lives they want to live. We talk about the warning signs for stroke, the risk factors we must navigate, and the keys to recovery. You can listen to the episode here or check out Lyn's other guests here. Eggs and Tea Medical News today reported on a study in the journal Heart published by the British Cardiovascular Society about a study in China that shows eating one egg a day can reduce the risk of stroke by 12%. If I'm reading the study right, the looked at 461,213 people. Almost daily egg consumption — or around 5.32 eggs per week — was also linked to a 12 percent lower risk of ischemic heart disease, compared with people who never or rarely ate this food (amounting to approximately 2.03 eggs per week). "The present study finds that there is an association between moderate level of egg consumption (up to 1 egg/day) and a lower cardiac event rate," the study authors explain. In the US, eggs are pretty much demonized when it comes to questions about cholesterol and vascular health. Of course, that doesn't stop us from eating the. It seems to me the key, as in most things is moderation. In effort to eat more healthfully, I've reduced my egg yolk consumption. I picked up a carton of liquid egg whites, and now instead of cooking 3 or 4 eggs, I'll cook one egg and make up the difference with egg white. I can't really taste the difference so it's a win. Plus, it's easier to deal with the carton one handed than to crack a bunch of eggs one handed. I encountered another study this week about the benefits of Green Tea. Cardio Vascular Business reports on a study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry with the headline,"Green tea component may prevent heart attack, stroke." That's great news, because green tea is mighty tasty. And green tea Kit Kats are awesome. But it pays to read a little more deeply. "Our results show that this intriguing compound might also be effective against the types of plaques which can cause heart attacks and strokes." The researchers said a normal amount of green tea is unlikely to have a significant effect on heart health. It's intriguing research, but we are unlikely to get the benefit by simply drinking more tea. Still, it's great to see this; perhaps they will be able to turn this chemical into a thing later on. In the meantime, enjoy your tea. Strokeaversary June 3 was my first Strokeaversary. So it's been a weird week. I'm not satisfied with my progress, but I'm further along than I ought to be. I've got plenty more work to do. I told this story on Facebook. You can read that here. I've learned a ton over the past year, and I've gotten to meet some great people. I've had a great time with this podcast, and I'd like to think I've been able to help some folks. And there's still a ton left to do. Hack of the Week Keep track of your medical expenses.
