Adrianne Haslet was a professional ballroom dancer when she survived the terrorist attack at the 2013 Boston Marathon where she lost her left leg. She quickly rose to meet her daily challenges with fierce determination and Boston Strong strength. A full time dancer at the peak of her career, she had to learn an entirely new way to navigate her daily life. She has since become a distance runner, and ran in multiple Boston Marathons, most recently in April, coming in 4th place in the division she advocated for for six years. In the wake of the terror, she has become a global inspiration. In this special episode, we talk all about Adrianne's life experiences and outlook on fitness. We discuss her background as a dancer, her transition to being a runner, navigating perfectionism, learning to love her new body, and her advocacy work for inclusivity in sports for differently-abled individuals. Throughout the conversation, Adrianne emphasizes the importance of adaptability, resilience, and self-care in pursuing fitness. You can follow Adrianne at @adriannehaslet on Instagram. Boston Marathon bombing survivor, motivational speaker and bad-ass woman Adrianne Haslet joins me on this episode to discuss her truly remarkable life journey full of ups and downs and a lot of resilience. I genuinely appreciated her vulnerability and candidness about her experience on April 15, 2013 as a spectator, being just inches away from one of the bombs at the Boston Marathon that ended up taking one of her legs. Having recently just passed the 10-year anniversary of this horrific event, we discuss not only that day, but the years that have passed since and another accident of being hit by a car that left her upper body shattered. She talks about her mental health, the hard times and picking herself up again and again and how she continues to move forward and not just survive, but thrive. Adrianne shows that she's human, but it's clear to see she's among the best of us. She made a promise just days after the bombing she would not only run the Boston Marathon, but she would finish it. A feat she has accomplished multiple times since. An incredible story of perseverance that has just begun. Follow Adrianne and her story: @AdrianneHaslet on Instagram Washington Post Cover Story
Adrianne Haslet is a professional ballroom dancer and motivational speaker who was injured while observing the Boston Marathon in 2013. Despite the amputation of her left leg as a result of the bombing, she has been able to continue her dancing career and run in the marathon in 2016 & 2022 (coming in 4th place!) even after being hit by a car in 2019. Talk about GRIT!!! Adrianne was featured in a 2014 TED talk, a movie with Anderson Cooper and has another on the way! She's also working on a book and is a sought after worldwide motivational speaker! I was so honored to be granted time to get to know her, she was warm, engaging, open and funny! I will never forget this conversation and know that you'll be inspired too. Thank you Adrianne! Keep going!

Adrianne Haslet crossed the finish line of the Boston Marathon this year alongside her coach, Shalane Flanagan, on what she called “the best day of my life.” It was the culmination of a vow she had made just five days after the 2013 Boston Marathon. She wasn't a runner then; she was at the marathon as a spectator when a terrorist detonated a homemade bomb near the finish line. Adrianne lost her left leg in the explosion, but declared less than a week later that she would return to run the marathon. Since that day, she has run Boston three times, has been instrumental in bringing a Para Division to the iconic race, and become a global keynote speaker whose debut TED talk has been viewed over 6.7 million times. "It takes a lot to get to a start line. I never take that for granted." Shalane Flanagan has run the Boston Marathon six times: four times as a professional athlete; once as a retired pro, the day after racing the Chicago Marathon; and now, as a guide. Shalane is a four-time Olympian, an Olympic silver medalist, and the 2017 New York City Marathon champion. She is a coach, a New York Times best-selling cookbook author, and a mom to two-year-old Jack. After racing the Boston Marathon in the fall as part of Project Eclipse, Shalane returned to Boston this year — and it was different than any other time she had run the race. Because this time, Shalane's race wasn't about the pursuit of a podium or a personal best. She ran the race as Adrianne Haslet's coach and guide in the para athletics division. In this conversation, Shalane talks about coaching Adrianne, about her own training for this race, and about her goals as Adrianne's guide. “This weekend I was like, ‘I just want to be me, and see where I can go with that. I don't want to conform. I don't want to turn off who I am to fit into the existing landscape.'” After 1,099 days, the Boston Marathon was back on Patriots Day! And I was there! On this episode, I'm talking (for a very long time) all about my weekend in Boston, where I hosted a live show with Tracksmith (listen to it here), was the post-race on-camera interviewer for the world feed broadcast (!!!), and made my Boston Marathon finish line announcing debut. It was a nonstop weekend filled with great people, exciting events, and a big leap out of my comfort zone and onto live (global!) television. So before we get into the interviews with people who ran the race (Nell Rojas and Adrianne Haslet, coming next week!), here's my recap of the 2022 Boston Marathon from the sidelines, the media trucks, the finish line, and the photo bridge. Nothing stops Adrianne Haslet. She was a bystander when bombs went off at the Boston marathon in 2013. After losing a leg that day, she vowed to run the race herself -- and she did in 2016. But first, she had to learn how to walk again. As she was training for the 2019 marathon, she was struck by a car and injured her shoulder. But Haslet didn't let that keep her down. She shares her thoughts on resilience, and what it is that motivates her to keep on going. In honor of 2022 Boston Marathon Day, this is a Rediscover episode originally published on August 1st, 2019.
“What will get us to the finish line is nothing compared to what got us to the start.” In 2013, professional ballroom dancer Adrianne Haslet was walking near the Boston Marathon finish line when the bombs went off. She lost her leg that day, standing on Boylston Street. Then, in 2019, Adrianne — who had become a runner herself after her lower leg amputation — was walking on Commonwealth Ave. when she was hit by a car. Even in the face of so much unexpected adversity, Adrianne hasn't lost her fighting spirit. She's a survivor, an advocate, an inspiration — and on Monday, April 18, she'll return to both Comm Ave. and Boylston Street, but this time it will be en route to her own marathon finish. Adrianne will be racing in the Boston Marathon's para division alongside friend and official guide Shalane Flanagan. In this conversation, Adrianne talks about training under Shalane's guidance, about how she's feeling with race day just a week and a half away, and about what she's doing now to prepare for the potential post-marathon blues. She also talks about the emotional component of running a race that she has such a heavy history with, and about what she pictures when she imagines her finish line moment. Adrianne Haslet is a Global Advocate for amputee rights, Keynote Speaker, Boston Marathon Survivor, Ballroom Dancer and Blade Runner. She comes on to discuss how instrumental therapy has been in her recovery, surrounding yourself with the right people, how she is managing during Covid-19, why dogs are more loyal than people, and her new venture “The Adrianne Strong” podcast which debuts this Friday July 10th.
Adrianne Haslet wasn't a runner on April 15, 2013 when a terrorist bomb detonated at the Boston Marathon. Almost dying and losing a leg because she just happened to be near the finish line "wondering what all the cheering was about", the 3rd ranked ballroom dancer in the world was no longer able to dance professionally. She shocked herself when she told Anderson Cooper on Live TV that she'd not only dance again, but take up running and finish the Boston Marathon. Now she's changing history. Thanks for joining us for today’s panel on Obstacle Opportunities. I have been fortunate to chat with over 150 remarkable people on my Intentional Performers Podcast. These people have overcome adversity, thought deeply about leadership, and have setup intentional lives for themselves to perform at their best. The coronavirus has created challenges for so many throughout the world and it is my hope that these panel discussions will help those in need. While everyone on the panel has tremendous expertise, I also want to note that what we are going through is truly unprecedented and there may be questions that the panelists don’t have the answer to. That’s ok. This isn’t designed to give you the answer to every question you have, instead it’s designed to have you think deeply about how you can handle this challenging time. Adrianne Haslet wasn’t at the Boston Marathon finish line in 2013 because she was a runner. Her decision to walk by, however, changed her life as the bombs went off, taking her leg in their wake. Now, seven years later, she’s not only running Boston for a second time as an amputee, she also convinced race association officials to add an amputee category -- and she’s aiming to win it. Get ready to be inspired through this incredible conversation with Adrianne about healing in the outdoors through a sport she never even considered before the bombing. 3/31/16 Interviewing Adrianne Haslet, Boston Marathon Survivor and Amputee Rights Advocate & Kristen Vangsness from Criminal Minds!
"I really hope that people seeing amputees in line at the grocery store don’t think, 'Oh, you poor thing,' they wonder, 'Oh, are you a marathoner?'" In April 2013, Adrianne Haslet was living her dream as a professional ballroom dancer. On Marathon Monday, she found herself near the Boston Marathon finish line, watching the runners finish the iconic race. But then, so many lives were forever changed that day. When the two bombs went off near the finish, the second blast took Adrianne's foot. On this episode, she recounts that day in Boston, and talks about rebuilding and moving forward. She talks about learning to wear, walk, and run with a prosthetic leg, and beautifully talks about the importance of being defined not as a victim, but as a survivor. Despite being at the center of tragedy that day, Adrianne has become an inspiration — and a Boston Marathoner herself. Thank you to AfterShokz for sponsoring this episode of the Ali on the Run Show! Hello Runners! Runners, you are now over halfway into January of 2019. How are you doing? If you committed to a new years resolution, specifically a running resolution are you sticking with it and seeing results? My resolution of "Dry January" does not specifically pertain to running, but certainly seems to be benefitting indirectly my running. What is dry January? Well, it's going one full month without drinking alcohol and like many runners, I do like beer and specifically a craft IPA. So far, I'm right on pace, feeling great and running stronger. My mind is clearer and I seem to have more energy which is a definite plus. Another benefit to "Dry January" is the waistline seems to be shrinking, though I don't really have a large waistline. Well, many thanks to all of your for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast thus far. The show seems to be picking up steam and there are more downloads each week, which means more listeners. I'm very grateful to each of you and please consider sharing it with your friends and on social media! If you subscribed through Apple Podcasts, I'd really appreciate you providing a rating which will help the show grow. If you have not done so already, please get on our Email list so you can keep up with what is going on. I promise not to bombard you with useless Emails. Ben Blowes from the UK is our special interview this week and he is a Guinness Book of World Records holder. He ran the 2017 London Marathon with a 55 lb (25 kilo) tumble dryer strapped to his back. Man, running a marathon is hard enough but seriously, I can truthfully say, that was never a thought in my mind. Apparently there are others in the UK that also run with household appliances strapped to their back. "Tony the Fridge" and "Paul the Tumble." are well known in the UK but don't hold any records, at least that I know of. Seriously, there is much more to Ben than just this amazing accomplishment and we had a wonderful conversation. I know you will enjoy it! Also in this episode I get on my soapbox and talk winter a bit and about my complete dislike for the treadmill or "dreadmill" as I like to call it. Recently, I found an article titled "9 ways to make running on a treadmill WAY more fun" written by Jody Braverman. I slice up and explain these 9 WAYS up in a humorous way. I also share some running news featuring three recent stories that I found worth sharing with the tribe. with three amazing people, Michael Waltrip (not the race car driver), Calix Fattmann and Adrianne Haslet. And of course, the episode closes with a motivational running quote for you to think about during your run. Motivational quotes are my jam! Currently, you can expect two podcast episodes per month to enjoy and as the show grows and I'm hoping to increase to weekly episodes. As you all know, we all must make a living and having enough time can be a factor. The great thing about podcasts is they are FREE and I've recorded and lined up some great interviews that I'm very excited to share with you. If you or someone you know has an inspirational story about running or giving back to the running community, please consider going to the main page of the website. There you can type in a brief summery in the section provided and I will be sure to get back to you. Adrianne Haslet is a professional ballroom dancer and a Fortune 500 level corporate manager. In 2013, she lost her leg to the senseless terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon. Adrianne didn’t miss a beat. Here’s how she puts it: “You realize what kind of life you lived, and that flashes before you, and then you realize what kind of life you want to live after.”
Share the Cookie Love is a perfect title for this post because that's exactly what Maryann Rollins aka The Cookie Artisan does. She's is one of those special people who make you feel as if you've known her forever. She has a bubbly personality, awesome smile and she's always full of positive things to say about other people. She's special to me because she takes the time to inspire, encourage, and help others with her cookie decorating. Words are powerful and I don't have enough to describe this amazing hero of mine and what she does with her power of a cookie. In this episode, we're going to talk about how Maryann uses cookies to "bake the world better one cookie at a time." She gave cookies to her daughters pre-school class so the kids would feel special. Maryann sold cookie classes to 5 women at $500 each to raise money for elementary school. She makes cookies for the band kids and they call them "show cookies" and won't eat them because they're so beautiful. There are so many different fundraisers she makes cookies for that I can't possibly name them all. One of the charities Maryann is working with now is Limbs for Life. It's a program that helps people all over the world get prosthetics and they even collect used prosthetics so they can use the parts to repair those that break. They work with missionaries to deliver and repair them in foreign countries. Sometimes when you mail things, they don't arrive because of various reasons. Limbs for Life sends people to deliver them personally to make sure those in need get help. Maryann met Adrianne Haslet, the ballroom dancer that lost her leg in the Boston bombings. Maryann said that Adrianne's story changed her forever. She recommends we visit Adrianne Haslet-Davis on Facebook and her website www.adriannehaslet.com to see her life after the tragic event. She's a motivational speaker who works tirelessly all over the world to raise awareness for Limbs for Life. She's also a board member. The list of things she does goes on and on. I know a little about how a prosthetic arm works because my son Tylor was born without a left hand. He wore his prosthetic for a short time in his life, but he chooses not to wear one. With or without it that boy can do anything! He rock climbs, plays the piano, works on computers, fishes, and anything else you can imagine. I'm always amazed by him. Maryann told me that on average, 507 people lose a limb a day. That's number is shocking. I never dreamed it was so high. I think the most shocking part is most people don't have insurance to cover it. They cost thousands of dollars and you need to replace them every 6 years or so. If you want to help, make a donation, or find out more on how to donate used prosthetics, you can find information on the Limbs for Life Give Now, page. Do you see why Maryann is one of my cookie heroes? You don't have to have anything more than butter, sugar, royal icing, and love to bake the world better one cookie at a time. You can give cookies to kids, your postal worker, firemen, police officers, or someone random. It will put a smile on their face and make them feel special. Maryann is really good at giving people a cookie hug! Who do you want to Share the Cookie Love with today? The terrorist attack at the 2013 Boston Marathon claimed the lives of three people, but it changed the lives of many. One of them was Adrianne Haslet, a professional ballroom dancer who was a marathon spectator that day when she lost her left leg below the knee in the second of two bomb blasts. http://www.moveforwardpt.com/Radio/Detail/boston-marathon-bombing-survivor-adrianne-haslet-i
Adrianne Haslet's life changed on April 15th, 2013. As Adrianne watched the Boston Marathon participants finish their grueling 26.2 miles she heard an explosion and her life was forever changed. Adrianne lost her leg that day. The leg that she had relied on to become one of the best dancers in the world. Her life was forever changed. In this conversation we unpack that faithful day, but much of our conversation is about the rest of Adrianne's life. Who she is. Who she was. And who she is constantly aspiring to be. Adrianne's willingness to make herself vulnerable leads to conversations about her battles with perfectionism, post traumatic stress, and the everyday challenges of living with a prosthetic leg. This conversation is really about a strong, independent, constantly evolving, curious, and driven woman, who aspires to be successful at whatever she does. Adrianne values challenges and inspires through her actions. She is honest and brave, and flawed like all of us. Thanks to Adrianne for coming on the podcast and sharing her journey with a stranger. Definitely give Adrianne a follow on Twitter: @AdrianneHaslet.
