It's been just over two years since four members of the Afzaal family were killed after a truck drove into them on a summer evening in London, Ontario. Now, 22-year-old Nathaniel Veltman is on trial for four counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and terrorism charges for what prosecutors are calling an attack motivated by “white nationalism”. An earlier version of this episode incorrectly stated that Anders Breivik killed 77 people in Norway in 2021. That date is incorrect. The killings happened in 2011. So far, the jury has heard testimonies from the detective that interviewed him, arresting officers, audio of the 911 call and have seen footage Veltman's statements to police hours after the attack. Kate Dubinski of CBC London takes us through the details of the trial, what members of the Muslim community are saying about the case and the impact it could have on the country's terrorism laws.

Guest: Wendy Gillis, crime and policing reporter Chilling testimony has been delivered in the ongoing trial of the man accused of killing four members of a Muslim family in 2021. For Canadian Muslims, it's a reopening of old wounds and a litmus test of Canada's anti-terrorism laws. Four members of the Afzaal family were killed just over two years ago in London, Ont., when the accused allegedly struck and killed Salman Afzaal, 46, Madiha Salman, 44, Salman's mother Talat Afzaal, 74, and Yumna Afzaal, 15, with his pick up truck. Salman's 9-year-old son was the sole survivor of the attack. The incident sparked shock and horror over Islamophobic violence fuelled by online hate and disinformation. In the first week of the murder trial, taking place in Windsor, Ont., prosecutors have been laying out the evidence. The details have been disturbing and painful. We try to unpack what we know so far. This episode was produced by Paulo Marques, Julia De Laurentiis Johnston, Wendy Gillis and Saba Eitizaz.

And Dr. Yasmine Djerbal, a recent PhD graduate from Queen's University whose work revolves around Islamophobia and the French and Canadian states. Her research investigates how radicalization & terrorist narratives are used to erode citizenship rights of Muslims in Canada and France. Specifically, she looks at how the two countries oversee, read, and manage Muslims in relation to secularism and 'war on terror' legislation. In this episode, the panelists addressed the implications and impact of the horrific murder of four members of the Afzaal family in London, Ontario, which was motivated by white supremacy and hate. Three generations of a Muslim Canadian family killed, leaving a 9-year-old child orphaned. The motive was horrific: Nathaniel Veltman, the pickup driver who mowed into them targeted them because of their faith. Thus far, Federal and provincial Crown attorneys have laid terror charges against Veltman while Police allege the incident was a planned and premeditated attack targeting Muslims However, Canadian Society continues to address the tragic killing of the Afzaal family as an "isolated incident"; yet Canada simultaneously faces virulent anti-Muslim hate and a brand of exceptionalism that promotes apathy and even denial towards the very existence of islamophobia in the country. Canadian man Nathaniel Veltman has been charged with murder in the case of the Azfaal family in London, Ontario. Veltman deliberately rammed his truck into them when they were out for a stroll in early June in what police called a premeditated attack. Four people were killed and a nine-year-old boy was injured. Now, for the first time in Canada, prosecutors say they plan to charge a person with terrorism in a case that involves an alleged Islamophobic act. Some legal experts say that adding the terrorism charge signals a shift in how Canada prosecutes those accused of terrorist activity. Related: Canada grapples with Islamophobia after killing of a Muslim familyCanadian Muslims welcomed the news that Veltman would be charge with terrorism. “It says to the Muslim community, we value the Muslim community and we will push for accountability."Nawaz Tahir, spokesperson, London osque“It says to the Muslim community, we value the Muslim community and we will push for accountability,” said Nawaz Tahir, a spokesperson for the London mosque.Terrorism has been a criminal offense in Canada since the 9/11 attacks on the United States. The law has been used almost exclusively to prosecute people with ties to Islamist groups. Tahir said that's left many Muslims feeling frustrated.“The frustration is, well, when Canadian Muslims are being killed and it appears to be an act of terror, why haven't terrorism charges been used?” he said.Tahir points to a shooting rampage at the Quebec City mosque in 2017. Six people died and five were injured. The shooter, Alexandre Bissonnette, was sentenced to 40 years for murder — the longest sentence in Canadian history. But he was never charged with terrorism.  “There was a lot of anger about whether the justice system was serious about protecting Muslims,” Tahir said. Related: France grieves victims of Nice church knife attackLike most democracies, Canada defines terrorism as the use of violence that is meant to coerce or scare people. But prosecutors also have to prove that an alleged terrorist act was motivated by religion, politics or ideology.Wesley Wark, an anti-terrorism expert at the University of Ottawa, said that unless there's clear evidence, like a confession or a written manifesto, the chances of ideological motivation “may be slim.”Adding a terrorism charge to an existing murder charge doesn't increase the sentence. So, Wark said, it's a safer bet to stick with murder. “The implications of losing such a case if you lay terrorism charges and other criminal code charges is really devastating."Wesley Wark, anti-terrorism expert, University of Ottawa“The implications of losing such a case if you lay terrorism charges and other criminal code charges is really devastating,” he said. “It's devastating to relations of the victims. It's devastating to the government's efforts to counter terrorism in all kinds of obvious ways. It's an embarrassment.”Related: French teacher's murder widens France-Turkey rift over secularismBut national security expert Leah West said the balance between getting a guaranteed conviction and sending a message about terrorism has started to shift."There is a sense that the public interest does weigh in favor of actually denouncing the act of violence as terrorism — not just to denounce this type of activity for those who might seek to engage or who have similar belief systems — but also to signal to the communities that they have been the targets of terrorism..."Leah West, national security expert"There is a sense that the public interest does weigh in favor of actually denouncing the act of violence as terrorism — not just to denounce this type of activity for those who might seek to engage or who have similar belief systems — but also to signal to the communities that they have been the targets of terrorism, and what they are suffering from is victimization by a terrorist group or a terrorist,” she said.West said that it reflects a change in the type of terrorist activity on security officials' radar, which previously focused on Islamist-inspired extremism. Related: The Proud Boys disbands in Canada, denies being a terrorist group“Individuals can be motivated to take terrorist acts by all kinds of ideologies and belief systems, and we're seeing those increasingly target various communities within Canada,” she said.Reports from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service say there's been an increase in ideologically-motivated extremism, and the national Royal Canadian Mounted Police force has flagged concerns about the rapid growth of “hateful” and ideologically-motivated extremism online. Security officials say the threat posed by xenophobic, mysogynist and anti-government groups and ideologies is greater than ever. Police in London, Ontario, still haven't said which evidence they have that shows the attack on the Afzaal family was ideologically motivated. But Nawaz Tahir said Muslims in the community are shaken to the core. He said many are questioning whether they need to take steps to hide their Muslim faith.“Some people have asked, you know, should I go for a walk if I'm wearing traditional clothing? Some women have asked, should I now take off my hijab?” he said.He said a successful prosecution for terrorism, as well as for murder, could be the start of their healing.

In this episode, Nashwa and Ryan sit down with Andrea Horwath, MPP for Hamilton-Centre and the Leader of the Official Opposition New Democrats. ** Please note this episode was recorded in mid-March** Nashwa and Ryan contextualize this episode with an extensive pre-show- if you do not want to listen to the pre-show please forward this episode to the interview that begins at around 26 minutes. In this interview Nashwa and Ryan wanted the audience to learn more about Andrea and the Ontario New Democrats. This episode focused on provincial issues such as the vaccine rollout. The rollout continues to be a disservice to Ontarians as many have witnessed egregious lines at pop-ups and people rely on a community-driven twitter feed for information about the vaccines. Ryan and Nashwa also ask about the Ontario NDP's launch of the Green New Democratic Deal. Although this was recorded during phase two and we are now in phase three the rollout remains disjointed and inequitable. As a podcast project, we are constantly thinking about a world beyond electoral politics and hope for electoral politics with teeth that go beyond platitudes. This is why we asked about the Ontario NDP's stance and their policy paper produced in the Summer of 2020. You can find the NDP policy paper referenced here: End Police Violence. Invest In Black, Indigenous And Racialized People's Lives. An Ontario NDP Commitment To Action. Ryan wraps up by asking an evergreen question about the future of the Ontario NDP, how the base is being built, and how the provincial party plans to retain power. During the pre-show, Ryan and Nashwa discuss the current state of so many political issues throughout Ontario and why we want Ford out. While we vehemently recognize and acknowledge the limitations of electoral politics we hope this episode presents an alternative to the Ford Conservatives. Last week Doug Ford's Conservatives rammed through Bill 307. For the entirety of the pandemic, there was no urgency for an adequate paid sick days plan, to stop COVID evictions, to roll out an accessible vaccination program, to redress long-standing issues throughout the Long-Term Care system, and so much more. The list of moments throughout this pandemic that were urgent for so many Ontarians and not prioritized by Ford Nation are quite obvious. At the same time, we are witnessing a burgeoning fascist movement in Ontario and throughout Canada. We have been experiencing a rising unchecked white supremacy grow in Canada, overlapping with the anti-mask conspiracy parades. We fear that as Canada “goes back to normal” hate crimes will inevitably increase (terminology that frankly requires its own reckoning and further complexity). This contingent, which was emboldened after Donald Trump's election as well as the general acceptance of far-right hate speech in Canada's political discourse has been left entirely unaddressed. The Ford government is part of this. With cabinet members like Merrilee Fullerton and friendships with people like Charles McVety it is rather clear that this is a government that is friendly to bigotry. Bill 307 was rammed through last week after courts had deemed it unconstitutional because it unjustifiably violated Ontarians' right to freedom of expression – in particular affecting this important right during elections. Instead of appealing the decision, the Ford government invoked s. 33 of the Charter: the Notwithstanding Clause. The legal rule is an emergency tool governments can use to override certain Charter rights, even after a court deems a law unconstitutional. This tool has never been used in Ontario because invoking the Notwithstanding Clause means that a policy is going to violate fundamental civil liberties. This shows just how far Ford will go to achieve his political goals.Regardless of where you fall politically, even if you are beyond electoral politics, Ford's time in office has been devastating for activists and organizers throughout the province fighting like hell to keep people safe and alive. From his austerity cuts and right-wing populism, the racist dog whistles he has used to signal that he's on the side with the white supremacists, Ford needs to go. In Ontario, one could describe the current electoral political arena as something like the Sanders versus Trump showdown that never materialized in the US. With decades of Liberal governments neglecting Long-Term Care, destroying our public services, and so much more, the NDP finally holds a position as the official opposition in a way they previously have not. We have less than one year to get the Ford government out of office, but we can also dream far beyond that. We are very cognizant of the limitations of electoralism, as we've expressed on many occasions on this podcast, but it is also important to recognize multi-method action. We can and should be principled while also knowing that there is flexibility and multiple fronts we must organize on and counter. ** Please note this episode was recorded in mid-March*** This episode was recorded before Nashwa began her role at the Ontario NDP.Mutual Aid & Community Support:Although this episode is not paywalled we would deeply appreciate it if people would share or give (if able to do so) to any of the causes or groups listed below. Last week has been and will continue to be hard for myself (Nashwa) and the team so I will keep this brief. A well-respected Muslim family, who emigrated from Pakistan to Canada, and were model citizens, living a life of love and learning, were cruelly mowed down on one of their evening walks by 20-year-old Nathaniel Veltman in a pickup truck. In the first segment of this episode of The Terrorist Therapist Show, we take a close look at the Salman Afzaal family: father (a physiotherapist), mother (an engineer), daughter (a 9th grade honor student) and grandmother (the matriarch) - who were all killed. Only a 9-year-old son survived and is hospitalized. If their murderer was motivated by hate, he chose a family who did not fit the stereotype that is sometimes unfortunately foisted on Muslims. Veltman is charged with 4 counts of murder and 1 count of attempted murder, and there is controversy over whether terrorism charges should be added. Next, Dr. Carole puts Nathaniel Veltman on her couch and takes us inside his mind to figure out what motivated him to perpetrate this savage act. And it’s more complicated than you might imagine. On the one hand, there’s Islamophobia/Hate Crime/Terrorism. On the other, there’s a troubled childhood, including grief over a family member’s death, scars of his parents’ divorce, addiction to violent video games, insufficiently treated anger issues, jealousy over the Muslim family’s seeming closeness as contrasted with his own dysfunctional family, and more. All of these are analyzed, so that you can decide which factors you think played the biggest role in this tragedy.
