On his new recording, Something About Believing tenor saxophonist Tim Armacost is joined by trumpeter Tom Harrell and baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan as well as the outstanding rhythm section of  bassist John Patitucci and drummer Al Foster. Listening to the music one is struck by the comfortability of master improvisers doing what they do best, however in this episode of LINER NOTES Tim explains that this recording is a snapshot of a journey that he embarked on a number of years ago while exploring synesthesia. The project began as a chordless quartet in which the musicians worked with lighting designer Liz Liebeskind in real time and beyond this recording Armacost has assembled a new quartet that is working with visual artist Mary Shah who joins the band at performances and creates a visual response to the band's music.

Today, the Spotlight shines On saxophonist/composer Kevin Sun.Kevin joined us to discuss, among other things, his dramatic double album from 2023, The Depths of Memory, which was released in two halves: From All This Stillness in July of that year and The Depths in Slow Motion in October of that year.Kevin's an intense yet accessible player and composer—and a true working musician. He leads an ensemble most Tuesday nights at Lowlands Bar and appears regularly at Bar Bayeux and Ornithology, all three in Brooklyn, NY.In the time since we recorded this talk back in January, Kevin has released a new record, a live one, recorded at Lowlands. Fate of the Tenor has him leading a trio which, to my ears, gives more than a passing nod to Joe Henderson's great 1985 live trio recordings with Ron Carter and Al Foster, State of the Tenor. Even the cover art seems a bit of an homage. Jimi Hendrix is one of the most iconic figures in all of rock music and was a hero to Robert and millions of people. So when Robert recorded his debut album "Miles Behind" in 1994 he decided to include a cover of one of Jimi's songs. He chose to reimagine a “psychedelic jazz” version of Hendrix's classic “Fire”. It features Al Foster from Miles Davis' band on drums plus the amazing Ada Dyer on vocals. Twenty five years later, with his band, Project Grand Slam, Robert decided to re-record “Fire” but in a different style. This new, reimagined version of the song became the band's closing number in concert. This episode features a bit of both versions of “Fire” - the studio version from 1994, and a “live” concert version from 2018 from the “It's Alive!” album, featuring the wonderful Ziarra Washington on vocals. Eric Wyatt is a saxophonist who plays tenor, alto, and soprano sax. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Eric was taught music by his dad, Charles Jolly Wyatt, who played in the army band in Germany. His dad moved to Harlem in the early 50's just in time to play with many of the world's greatest players. Eric can recall stories of his dad taking him to concerts where he would sometimes drive the band members in the family station wagon. Eric at 11 years old drove with his father in 1972 to Storrs, CT with bassist Larry Ridley and pianist Albert Dailey. The band leader was Eric's godfather Sonny Rollins. Jim Hall was on the gig as well. This inspired Eric at a young age to hear his first live concert. Some of his dad's friends were Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dexter Gordon, Gary Bartz, Big Nick Nicholas, Gilley Coggins, Wilber Ware, and Dizzy Gillespie. Eric went with his dad to see Miles Davis at the Bottom Line club and went backstage after the gig. Eric began on alto and studied at Kingsborough Community College. He also went to Lehman college where he studied with pianist Stanley Cowell. He had some opportunities early in his career to write and license an original song to channel 5 in NY for a tv news show called Black News with host Bill McCreary in 1985. He went on to switch to tenor after his dad passed in July 1989. He met and studied with a Brooklyn legend named Arthur Rhames who inspired him. The lessons he learned from Arthur helped to put Eric on the right track. Eric started playing in Europe as a leader in Sept 1996 performing in Paris, France at the La Villa Jazz Club. Dany Michel brought him there 2 times and Eric made connections in Europe and took his quintet to the Half Note Jazz Club in 1998 and 1999. He has played as a leader in Moscow, Russia, as well as in Slovakia, Prague, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Athens in Greece, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. He has 5 recordings as a leader and has played as a sideman on CDs with Kenny Garrett, Jeff Tain Watts, Bob Crenshaw, Al Foster, Rufus Reid, Warren Wolf, Wallace Roney, and Steve Jordan. His Cds currently out today are Borough Of Kings, Positone, Look to the Sky, and The Golden Rule 4 Sonny, and A Song of Hope.

In this episode, we talk about the Battlestar Galactica ... thing ... that's happening on NBC's new streaming service. Though it's not a reboot, it supposedly won't share any cast, but takes place in the same universe as Ron Moore's BSG, and we have no idea when it'll actually be available to watch. So yeah... this one seems like it's humming along like a finely tuned machine. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean we can't spend some time wildly speculating about what it could be! LINKS OF INTEREST:- Here's the original Hollywood Reporter post about the new show from September 2019, then the latest article we found on Cineblend from February 2020, and then another one from Slashfilm in February 2020 for the sake of completeness.- Welcome to another edition of "Tim Was Right, Todd Was Wrong"... Tim was closer to the truth about the time jump at the end of "Daybreak Part 3" (the final episode of Ron Moore's BSG) because it's a 150,000 year difference between the crew landing on Earth and present day, not millions of years as Todd claimed.- Well, well, well... looks like SNL posted the old Eddie Murphy "James Brown Celebrity Hot Tub Party" in a decent resolution after all!- And the most recent actor we thought who was no longer with us but turns out to be very alive was Dennis "I've Got 98 Acting Credits To My Name So Stop Calling Me Mister Belding" Haskins! ...AND ANOTHER THING:Tim was very excited about Mile Davis' 1981 album The Man With The Horn, which features drummer Al Foster, saxophonist Bill Evans, guitarists Mike Stern and Barry Finnerty, Marcus Miller on bass, and others. Specifically, you ought to check out the track "Fat Time".Todd thinks a deep dive into Keith Jarrett's The Koln Concert is well worth your time as well as reading some of the history behind the event and why it's considered a bit of a masterpiece. FOLLOW US ON THE SOCIAL MEDIAS:Did you love what you listened to? Vince Wilburn was always fascinated by Tony Williams, Jack De Johnette, Al Foster, or whomever held the drum throne of his uncle Miles Davis’s group. At the tender age of 9, at the Plugg Nickel in old town Chicago, Miles had Vince sit in on a set with his band… Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Wayne Shorter, and Dave Holland. Vince founded and played in various Chicago bands through high school. Most notably, he was in a band called AL7, which caught Miles' attention. That band became the catalyst for “The Man with the Horn”, Miles' 1981 comeback album. The album was recorded in NY using AL7's core rhythm section. In 1983, Vince joined Cameo. In 1984, Vince went to Copenhagen to co-produce and record Miles' GRAMMY award-winning album “AURA” for Columbia Records. Vince played additional drums on the album. Later, Vince co-produced “Decoy”, which featured Al Foster on drums. In the summer of 1984, Vince began to live his dream. He co-produced and shared the drum chair with his idol, Al Foster, on Miles's record “You're Under Arrest”. Once the record was completed, Miles added Vince to his band, anointing him to the coveted drum throne. Vince toured the world with Miles while he held the drum chair from 1984 through 1987. In addition to heading his own company, NEFDRUM, Vince and his cousins, Cheryl and Erin, oversee Miles Davis Properties, LLC. In 2007 Vince called me to collaborate with him on “Evolution of a Groove”, a groundbreaking Miles Davis EP that features the likes of hip-hop icon Nas, guitar legend Carlos Santana, along with Victor Bailey, Pat Thrall, Olu Dara, and Charley Drayton. Vince was also Executive Producer of the Miles bio pic featuring Don Cheadle called “Miles Ahead”.

LINER NOTES

ILLUMINATION McCoy Alfred Tyner is best remembered from the John Coltrane Quartet. In the past decades since he has become one of the major pianists and composers, expanding the vocabulary of color and harmony. His lusty piano is richly percussive and hammering, while full of cascading and romantic sounds. His unique and forceful style has inspired and influenced a whole new generation of musicians. Tyner was born in Philadelphia on December 11, 1938, the oldest of three children. He was encouraged to study piano by his mother. He finally began studying the piano at age 13 and within two years, music had become the focal point in his life. In the beginning McCoy practiced on a neighbour's piano. When his family bought one, he began hosting jam sessions. Among his friends and neighbours were a number of young musicians who would go on to make their marks in jazz, such as trumpeter Lee Morgan, saxophonist Archie Shepp, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Regie Workman. "Bud and Richie Powell moved into my neighbourhood. Bud was a major influence on me during my early teens. He was very dynamic." In addition, Thelonious Monk and Art Tatum were young McCoy's major influences. McCoy studied at the West Philadelphia Music School and later at Granoff School of Music. At age 17, while playing at a local club called the Red Rooster, he first met JOHN COLTRANE. Coltrane was in Philadelphia between gigs with Miles Davis. The saxophonist, whose style was still in its formative stages and whose reputation was on the rise, had no working group of his own, but secured a few engagements in and around Philadelphia, with McCoy often in his rhythm section. The rapport between the two was so apparent, that Coltrane made it clear that he hoped to eventually have a regular band with McCoy Tyner in it.His first main exposure came with BENNY GOLSON being the first pianist in Golson's and Art Farmer's legendary Jazztet (1959). By 1960, when John Coltrane finally left Miles Davis to form his own group, McCoy left Art Farmer. Tyner continued with Coltrane through 1965, participating in all the major recording sessions. The pianist participated in numerous historical recording sessions with Coltrane, including for instance Africa Brass, A Love Supreme, and My Favorite Things. While with Coltrane, Tyner also recorded many of his own albums for Impulse!, including such classics as "Inception", "Night of Ballads and Blues", and "Live at Newport", and later for Blue Note, which enabled him to feature his densely rich piano sound to great effect.Upon Leaving Coltrane (1965), there was a lull in Tyner's popularity. The future looked bright and the trio he formed seemed to have a big future. In fact he spent the next five years playing superbly but getting more and more disillusioned due to lack of acceptance. But he rebounded in the 1970's. Due to groups featuring Sonny Fortune and Azar Lawrence and recordings for Milestone like "Sahara", which received two Grammy nominations and was named 'Album of the year' in the Down Beat Critics Poll, Tyner gained recognition. He toured and recorded with SONNY ROLLINS, Ron Carter and Al Foster as the Milestone Jazzstars in 1978, and in the mid-1980s led a quintet that included Gary Bartz and violinist John Blake. Since 1980, he has also arranged his lavishly textured harmonies for a big band that performs and records when possible. In the late 1980s, he mainly focussed on his regular piano trio featuring Avery Sharpe on bass and Aarron Scott on drums. As of today, this trio is still in great demand. He returned to Impulse in 1995, with a superb album featuring MICHAEL BRECKER. In 1996 he recorded a special album with the music of BURT BACHARACH. In 1998 he changed labels again and recorded a interesting latin album and an album featuring STANLEY CLARKE for TelArc. While he avoids modern conventions and the trappings of the moment, Tyner's sound remains contemporary to this day. Tyner's full use of the piano's keyboard, with a striking exploitation of dynamics, sets him aside from more introverted players like Bill Evans and Keith Jarret. Their "musique de chambre" links them more with the European-oriented piano tradition, whereas Tyner follows the track back to the roots of the Afro-American quintessence of jazz music.Tyner's music has been a major influence over the adoption in jazz of quartal and quintal harmonies, modes and pentatonic scales. He achieved a revived appreciation as a major player in the international jazz scene, a status he continues to maintain

This short-lived quintet led by tenor saxophone master Hank Mobley and pianist Cedar Walton constituted one of Mr. Mobley's final documentation on record. It was done in New York on February 22,1972. Hank was one of the most prolifically consistent musicians of the 50's and 60's and recorded dozens of fine albums mostly for Blue Note Records and also for Prestige and Savoy. Hank was a charter member of The Jazz Messengers, and worked with Max Roach a few times but was most prominent when he worked with Miles Davis from 1960 to 1962. His recorded output is tremendously consistent and his compositions fill most of these albums...the finest being on Blue Note. Hank made his last album for that label in 1970. After that, illness, affecting his lungs and deterioration from drugs and alcohol ruined his health. The Feature album, with this group marked his penultimate appearance on records. This fine band made up of Hank and Cedar included the unique voice of the baritone and soprano saxophones, Charles Davis, plus the fiery rhythm section of bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins. All of the players have their feature moments on this album. Davis on baritone is featured on "Sabia" by A.C. Jobim, Walton gets a trio track and plays Henry Mancini's "Theme From Love Story". Hank Mobley's feature is his take on the Gershwin's "Summertime". Two great Mobley compositions are included here also: the opening title track is a burner and "Early Morning Stroll" cooks at a slightly lower flame. There are many wonderful moments throughout this record and we'll hear them all.The final track on the Hank Mobley Feature is his final recorded appearance. He guested on one tune on a date with Catalonian pianist Tete Montoliu with bassist George Mraz and drummer Al Foster....Hank plays "Autumn Leaves". This was recorded in 1980. Hank Mobley died on May 30,1986 of ill health and in poverty, he was only 56. After his passing, whole generations of young musicians recognized Mr. Mobley as one of the musical giants of the last century and not only as a saxophonist who can sit alongside Coltrane and Rollins but a fine composer as well.
