Staycationing means vacationing from home. Whether it's a long weekend or an entire week, you get to choose what each day will entail. Taking a much-needed mental health break from your normal routine (and from the world news) is key to recharging your batteries. Here in Part 2, we suggest:TOUR YOUR OWN CITYWhen was the last time you walked around your own hometown? Even if a lot of local attractions are shut down, you can still walk around and learn something about the history and culture of your area and find new places to walk and hike. Or Take quick drive to a nearby town or even an unfamiliar suburb of your own city can make a fun adventure. Drive an hour out and see what you find- take day trips- explore ...for added fun- go for a top-down cruised in a Rented convertible for the day. turn off your map apps and get lost in your city And of course, add The ROAMies ,Alexa James and Rory Partin music to your road trip and exploring playlists :) And don't forget- You can also Geocache locally! Geocaching is a family friendly activity you can dowhile safely social distancing. Geocaching is the world's largest treasure hunt https://www.geocaching.com/play1. To get started, you can Create an account online or through the Geocaching® app to view a map of geocaches near you.2. Find a geocache. Use the app to navigate to a geocache nearby. Don't forget to bring a pen (and consider hiding your own once you've found around 20 of them)! 3. Share your experience. Once you find the geocache, sign and date the logbook. Place the geocache back where you found it and log your experience online.Enjoy a Self-Care SPA DAYGive yourself permission to balance the stress of what's going on and let your mind be at ease. Take a self-care day and indulge in being by yourself and/or pampering yourself. Homemade facials and mani-pedi's to exfoliating baths and yoga and stretching and eating poshy healthy foods. You can even take extra steps to decorate your bathroom like a resort spa, fix some citrus infused ice water, essential oils, beautiul flower bouquets, relaxing music and schdule your homemade spa services. My favorite homemeade mask is super simple- whip up an egg white or two to a nice foam and apply to a clean face for 20 minutes. This really lifts and tightens your skin and it feels wonderful. Yogurt, banana and avacado have wonderful hydrating properties and also easily mix together to create a wonderful mask made from your kitchen ingredients. HOME REPAIR, RENOVATIONS AND REMAKESOf course, sometimes you need staycations to get those house projects DONE, finally declutter and organize hidden closets and basements, and set up your home to serve you, This might include creating a backyard oasis, rearranging furniture, make the bedroom feel like a luxurious hotel suite, create spa areas in your bathroom, making use of your formal dining room and nice dishware, Make your living room more cozy- creating spaces that feel like vacation and retreat to you, as well as zoned areas for your most efficient workflow. Or just for a fun change, get out the paint and paint a wall a different color or paint some furniture. Along those lines, it's also time to fess up and realize that if you still have unfinished home projects that you haven't done with extra quarantine time on your hands- that maybe you really don't want to finish the project - or maybe it's not the exact right project for that space. Hire a professional and/or get that unused wood taking up space

We all assess how we're feeling physically on a daily basis and use that data to inform our decisions. (If our knee hurts, we don't run that day.) But we don't do that with our mental health. Despite the fact that it drives our physical health and the way we see the world, we tend to consider mental wellness a luxury rather than a foundational piece of our wellbeing. Today, we're joined by Alexa James, the Executive Director of the Chicago Chapter for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), an organization dedicated to providing hope and improving the quality of life for people affected by mental health conditions. A licensed clinical social worker with Master's Degrees in Social Work and Child Development, Alexa has devoted her professional life to serving people living with mental illness as well as those impacted by poverty and trauma. Alexa begins by explaining how biology, genetics and environment impact our mental health, offering insight into what a toxic community looks like and what we can do to create communities of wellness. She introduces us to the idea of proactively asking employees what accommodations they need to navigate stress and describes how she set the tone for her team by prioritizing her own mental health. Listen in for advice on using person-first language to talk about people living with mental illness and learn what YOU can do to remove the stigma associated with mental health. Themes explored in this week's episode: How Alexa defines mental health as the ability to manage stress in a way that doesn't interfere with our relationships, our work or our sense of self How our mental health impacts our physical health and guides the way we see the world How biology, genetics and environment contribute to the development of mental illness The idea of creating treatment declarations around what accommodations we need when we get stressed Alexa's insight on what a toxic community looks like Alexa's understanding of wellness as the responsibility she has to set the tone in the organizations she works with Why NAMI focuses on resources and environment to create communities of wellness Alexa's take on the unique mental wellness needs of high-profile leaders and why it's powerful when they acknowledge their challenges How the media and our healthcare system perpetuate the stigma around mental health Why sharing our lived experiences is the first step in removing the stigma associated with mental illness Using person-first language to talk about people living with mental illness Resources from this episode: Learn more about NAMI Chicago at https://www.namichicago.org/ Reach out to the NAMI Helpline at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) Read E. Hey Girls!Wanna know how you can boost your beauty, health, and emotions? While we're on the subject of healthy eating on the go- and especially in reference to our previous two videos about salads- we want to provide some practical 411. This episode piggy backs on our previous podcast episode and we feel that between these two episodes, you’ll have the foundation you need for lifelong health- if you implement them, of course! I'm your host, Alexa James. In our previous podcast, I gave you heads up that we would be talking about green stuff. Wanna guess? And no, we’re not talking about money today. However, we do you plan on having a nice lineup of episodes about money- so make sure you subscribe to this podcast so you don’t miss out! In this episode, we talk about being rich with your health. The best currency you can feed your body to make it as healthy and beautiful as possible and to eat as many greens as possible. So what do I mean by greens? I’m talkin' romaine and bitter lettuces, kale, watercress, escarole, endive, broccoli, greens like: collard, mustard carrot and turnip, spinach, arugula, cabbage, green onions and garlic, bok choy, sprouts, baby greens and micro greens, Napa cabbage and Chinese cabbage, Swiss chard, asparagus, celery, chives, artichokes, okra, leeks, fennel, zucchini, cucumber and green bell peppers when their peeled and seeded, and herbs like basil, mint, cilantro and parsley. And don’t forget that lovely fruit, avocado. The Most beneficial greens are the leafy -ones and the darker the better. And you can eat them raw, cooked, juiced, powdered, and in your favorite smoothie or homemade açaí bowl. There are even brands out there that are adding veggies to their ice cream and mac & cheese. The beauty, health and emotional benefits you get from greens should encourage and challenge you to get creative with those greens and get them into your diet as much as possible.Follow us at: www.ChikChat.com/Bloghttp://www.Instagram.com/ChikChathttp://www.Facebook.com/ChikChatSupport the show (http://www.ChikChat.com)

But being and staying healthy takes hard work determination and persistence and discipline. There can be a lot of obstacles that can keep us from being healthy-usually the number one excuse is lack of time. But sometimes it can also seem expensive and like you have to know a ton of stuff -like all the latest research and what is the latest diet fad and is it truly healthy? Hummus A lot of the ingredients in hummus help fight inflammation - like olive oil and chick peas - even tahini- which is made from sesame seeds, may also help reduce inflammation in the body. inflammation is one of the hugest enemies to our health. A wide array of health problems, including but not limited to chronic pain, obesity, ADD/ADHD, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, migraines, thyroid issues, dental issues, and cancer all have the source of there issue rooted in in inflammation, The crazy thing is that The majority of inflammatory diseases start in the gut. So it’s super important that we have a healthy gut biome or a healthy gut environment. The Girl Talk: Self Care Is An Act of Political Warfare EditionThis episode was recorded live at The Hideout in Chicago on January 23, 2018.“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” - Audre Lorde One year into Trump's presidency feels like 1,000 years, but a new year brings new hope, as difficult as that is to muster at times. This month on The Girl Talk, we'll speak to women who can help give us that hope by reflecting on what we've accomplished in the last year, how to care for ourselves even at our darkest moments, and how we can avoid fatigue and keep striving to make the world less awful. It's easy to be a dick to yourself a few weeks into the new year if you missed the gym or broke your resolutions in some other ways, but that's no way to love yourself! Let's surround ourselves with some positive femme-rgy and get ready to slay 2018. What is The Girl Talk, you ask? It's a monthly show on the fourth Tuesday of the month hosted by journalist Jen Sabella and public education warrior/CPS teacher Erika Wozniak Francis and co-produced by Chicago media strategist Joanna Klonsky. We feature influential Chicago women and gender nonconforming individuals fighting for social justice. All are welcome to take part in these important conversations. Nikki English, Keith Robertson and Matt Williams have been together since 2000 as the country band, Western Avenue. The band was nominated in 2013 for the Ontario Country Music Association and twice-nominated International Music and Entertainment Association Award. Western Avenue is a “hot country” sound, demonstrated by their catchy first single, “Highway Headin’ Out of Town,” picked up by Canadian country radio in 2012. With the release of their new single, “Wherever You Are,” from their February 2013 self-titled debut EP, Western Avenue is taking their melody-driven blend of country and pop music to the US and around the globe. Already #1 on the Roots Music Report Pop Country chart and #26 on New Music they are rocketing up in the US and Canada. Weekly,We are proud they are stopping by Music FridayLive! this week on the way. Rory Partin had his first taste of the big time singing backing-up for five-time Grammy winner Larnelle Harris. After over three years touring internationally with Harris, Partin returned to the states and settled in Nashville, eventually leading Rory Partin & His All-Star Big Band. Now in Los Angeles, Partin has redefined himself as a solo artist, a powerhouse of blue-eyed soul, backed by an 18 piece band. He is also a hot blues and cajun artist and can rock the house. But this week, he and his wife Alexa James (also known collectively as The ROAMies) bring their big band sound and signatrure harmonies to the Typhoon Club in LA, crooning "Georgia on My Mind" and other jazz and blues standards. Best of all, they talk to us on Friday at 11:30 am PT.
