Today we sit down with writer Jennie Spohr to discuss what happens when a solo trip—which you were sure would be just the thing to reignite your curiosity and joy—actually turns out to be a bad idea... or is it? Do YOU love NOLA? Jazz Fest? Are you thinking of going to either OR both in your future? Are you a live music lover? If you have the tiniest bit of interest in any, or ALL of the things I mentioned than I believe you'll hear something that resonates with AND inspires you in this episode :) I went to New Orleans, for Jazz Fest, for the first time 3 years ago. It was the first Jazz Fest after the pandemic shut the world down, and I could hardly wait! A friend was supposed to join me, but because certain places were still requiring a vaccine card they opted out. I entertained the idea of not going, for about 5 minutes, and then begain to solidify my plans! I have since fallen in love with the Crescent City!! I attended solo and have gone back every year since! The first year I attended the first weekend of Jazz Fest, last year I attended the 2nd weekend, and this year I stayed for the whole shabang :) I've released a few prior episodes: #'s 11, 12 & 46, in which I share about my experiences during each visit, and here I am again about to share all about my first 5 days of Jazz Fest 2024 AND MORE!!! My intention is to provide you, in a 3 part series, with tips on getting around, info on the place I stayed, and a peek into the many venues where I took in live music, along with my Jazz Fest specific experience ;) I saw SOOOOOOOO many concerts in my first 5 days! I almost couldn't believe that after those first 5 days I still had 8 more days of music, food and fun to enjoy!! I hope you can live a bit vicariously through me, via this episode, AND be inspired to either visit/revisit the Big Easy yourself, or get jazzed to get to another city you love ;) In the meantime: "Come with me to New Orleans. What a city you will see!" This lead me to want to connect with Mia, a 28 year old black solo female traveler that has been to 35 countries. Diana Williams lived a rich life by any measure. She was a wife, a mother, a traveler, and the founder of a job training organization at San Quentin prison in California. But for three decades, Williams was plagued by mysterious symptoms. These included exhaustion, night sweats, brain fog, and throbbing headaches and chills that left her bedridden for days. Specialists diagnosed her with a series of maladies such as multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, and toxic mold exposure. They prescribed grueling treatments that took up time, money, and ultimately proved unsuccessful. Williams eventually decided enough was enough. In January of this year, she traveled to Dignitas, a “death with dignity” group in Switzerland, and ended her life. In December 2023, just weeks before her “death date,” Williams joined Diane for a conversation about her agonizing choice and why she felt it was so important to tell her story of “a life well lived, a death well planned.”You can read more about Diana Williams's story in her posthumously published memoir, “Traveling Solo.”

One of the best ways seniors can keep growing and thriving at this time in our lives is through exploring the wonders our planet by way of travel. That's why I'm especially excited to introduce our guests, Kelsey Perri and Laurel Ostrow. They are joining us to share all about an organization that's both highly regarded and well-known to us boomers. And that is Road Scholar. Kelsey is the Director of Public Relations for Road Scholar and Laurel is a retired professor of nursing and nurse practitioner. Laurel has been on 10 programs with the Road Scholar and volunteers with the organization as an Ambassador. Each of them is kind enough to share their time and experiences so that we can start making our own travel plans through this wonderful resource. So, take a few minutes, listen to what Kelsey and Laurel have to say, and start packing your bags. It's high time we pack our bags, hit the road and explore the many special sights of our world--all the while learning and growing through the experts at Road Scholar.
Welcome to the Higher.Conversations Podcast! We are back and moving in 2024! I just got back from being in Thailand, Laos, Hong Kong, and Tokyo!!! I talk about all the things I experienced and the power of taking time off, doing something that breaks your patterns, and the clarity that brings. If you are thinking about going to Thailand or are feeling like you need to have a reset i highly suggest going to Phuket Cleanse, in Phuket, Thailand. This was the most amazing experience and I cannot talk enough about how impactful it was to my mental health. About 2.5 years ago, my friend Liv connected me with Vaishali Patel, who had begun working on her book SOLO EXPLORERS, in which she would share the stories of 30 women from different backgrounds and in different stages of their lives. The one thing they had in common: They all went on a solo trip that changed their lives, whether through a conversation, a workshop, a person, or a task they set out to do. In this episode, Vaishali and I are talking about - what female solo travelers have in common - what fears we face and how to overcome them - how to make friends - and how to start solo traveling if you've never done it before. Vaishali also shares the inspiring stories of some of the women in her book. Listen to be inspired for your first or next solo trip
