What happens when six seasoned campers — three of them military — head deep into the remote wilds of Pennsylvania's Elk State Forest... and something starts throwing rocks at them from the darkness? In this unnerving episode, we hear firsthand from Jim, a lifelong outdoorsman who went from skeptic to believer after one terrifying night in the woods. As their camp was silently surrounded, rocks began flying, brush cracked under heavy footfalls, and something large — and intelligent — made its presence known. You'll hear how a weeklong trip turned into a desperate retreat, the strange footprint they found the next morning, and why they'll never return to that spot again. We also touch on Bigfoot activity near Wharton, Allegheny National Forest, and the mysterious silence of the woods when predators aren't the only ones hunting. This episode isn't a campfire tale. It's a warning.

Send us a textIn the early 20th Century, Americans had become alarmed at the disappearing forests in the eastern United States. Whether through private land purchases, deforestation, mining or other activities, the beautiful forests of the east were vanishing.Where once stood primeval forests of giant eastern hemlocks now stood stumps. As a result, wildfires spread through these devastated lands. Waterways were polluted. And little of Penn's Woods remained. Thankfully, lawmakers listened to the alarm bells of conservationists and in 1911 passed the Weeks Act. Name after Massachusetts Congressman John Weeks, the legislation allowed the use of federal funding to purchase forest land for conservation in the eastern United States. The legislation – which was signed into law by President Howard Taft -- is one of the most successful land conservation efforts in United States history. And, it was thanks to this law that we have the Allegheny National Forest.Created in 1923, the Allegheny National Forest spans over half a million acres in northwestern Pennsylvania. The sheer size of the forest is incredible. At just over 800 square miles, the national forest is over three quarters the land size of Rhode Island. 77.5 percent, actually. This spectacular piece of public land offers a sanctuary for outdoor adventurers, wildlife lovers and history buffs alike. Whether you're seeking the thrill of hiking over 200 miles of trails, the serenity of fishing in pristine lakes or the majesty of the towering trees and diverse wildlife, this forest has something for everyone. On this episode, I speak with Jamie Feikles. I will be speaking to David and Scott tonight. Scott writes "I just recently listened to episode 916 ( butter street monster) due to me living down the road from that area since I was 13 years old. Now I'm 36 and I live in Germantown right off butter street, I take that road everyday to and from work. I transferred schools to Carlisle Ohio, in the 7th grade and lived off of Martz Paulin at the time of my sighting on morning star road. I bring up my story because butter street and morning star are extremely close together and are surrounded by the same wooded areas and metro parks. Around 2008 I was driving down this road called Morning Star road in the middle of the night and witnessed what I can only imagine is Bigfoot related, or a guy in a very expensive Halloween costume. Background history of Morningstar road. Local town stories of people being killed at a camp site on the road in the 70's, never really found any evidence about that part but there are some spooky spots on the road and some areas even now I would avoid at dark. Other stories from the road are an old house burnt down in the woods where the wife was running out in the middle of the road and was hit, or fell down the stairs and broke her neck(which ever side of the story is true I have no idea) ,which me and my friends were able to locate and find burnt remains of the forgotten house. Then the notorious Bigfoot sightings through out the years of this entire area. My stepmom was raised her whole life in Carlisle and recalls stories growing up of Bigfoot sightings along Morningstar road and twin creek(which bumps right up along the side of the road). I recall my old English teacher who told me a story of her returning home from the store one night and seeming a creature which she claimed was easily 7-8 feet tall walking across the street from one wooded part to the other. Anyways fast forward to my experience. It was dark out and winter time. There was snow on the ground which the moon light up and made it easier to see the wood line on the road. There's a few S type turns on Morningstar road that you have to really slow down on to maneuver safely on the road. Trees over lap these areas and make it really dark out at night with only your headlights guiding the way as any back country road is. While slowly going through one of the turns, there it was. Standing in between a tree or trees connected that formed a Y shape. It stood way taller than a normal size person and was covered in brown hair from head to toe from the angle we were seeing this at. At this point we were going less than 5 miles per hour due to the roads being slick and the S turn. So the detail of what I seen was burnt into my memory. What ever it was squirted its eyes and covered its eyes with its hand to prevent from the lights blinding it I assume. First thing I noticed right away was when the light shine on its eyes, they were a yellowish color, almost as it had jaundice or something of the sort. The creature flash its teeth a little bit as it raises its freakishly big hand over its eyes blocking the light. The teeth didn't seem to be in the best shape more browning yellow but bigger than normal human teeth. It turn its upper body and you can see the muscle definition in its back, tricep and lats before it turned the rest of its body and began walked down hill away from the vehicle. My friend began to freak out and scream while I began to yell just drive! My friend made it around the S type turn and floored it home. Which is only a min down the road. That image is forever remembered with clear detail. I tell this story all the time and everyone of my friends laugh at me lol, but it doesn't bug me. Me being a avid hunter , I think about this thing every time I step in the woods in the morning to hunt deer. It didn't show any signs of aggression but still a sighting that spooked me. I always try to debunk everything that happens out of the ordinary , but this one has stumped me. Like I stated earlier, it could of been some one in a costume, but it would of had of been a very expensive costume which I doubt that had 16 years ago. Would love to be on your podcast to tell my story. Huge fan! Thank you for taking the time to read this email."   I will also be speaking to David who was driving in the foothills of the Allegheny National Forest and a large creature stepped out in front of him. He describes the creature as massive. He said "I came to a screeching stop as this creature stepped out in front of me. He put his hands on my hood and looked at me. I have never been so terrified, our eyes locked. The creature then stood up and looked behind me and that's when something hit the back of the car. I never saw what it was but my airbags went off. The creature then walked off into the forest. Everything happened so fast. Being a formal Marine this felt like ambush." After hearing his encounter I don't think it was an ambush. I asked him if it was a rock that hit the back of the car and witness said it was something much bigger then a rock. It bent the frame of the rear of the jeep. Looking at the pictures you can tell the door no longer lines up with the frame.

Writer, educator, and editor from Ohio, Amy Bue became interested in the search for Bigfoot after seeing something strange in Ohio's Mahoning County in 2012. While her main research areas are in Forest County, Pennsylvania, and its Allegheny National Forest and in Ohio's Columbiana County, Amy has traveled to Michigan, New York State, Kentucky, Oregon, Washington State, West Virginia, Texas, Arkansas, and all over Ohio following up leads.Much of Amy's efforts have been put into her Project Zoobook, a group she co-founded comprised of primate zookeepers, primatologists, wildlife biologists, marine biologists, forestry workers, archaeologists, anthropologists, university professors, law enforcement officials, taxonomists, and other scientists working alongside Bigfoot researchers from across the country. She was given the International Bigfoot Conference's 2018 Dedicated Researcher Award for her work with this group.Amy is an active speaker and has spoken for events and organizations such as Gatlinburg's Smoky Mountain Bigfoot Conference, Oregon's Beachfoot, Ohio's Creature Weekend, several Outdoor Hunting and Fishing Conventions, Ohio's State Parks' system, and for the Ohio Division of Wildlife and its Audubon Society. Creekfoot, a well-loved biannual Bigfooting event in Ohio, was created by Amy and her research partner, Tina Sams.Amy has also appeared at such venues as Horror Hound Weekend's Fact or Fiction Fest in Indianapolis, and at the Spokane Valley Sasquatch Roundup in Washington State. While in Northern Washington, she participated in the filming of a documentary for Extreme Expeditions Northwest, which was recently released. She also headed up a group of women researchers on an expedition in South Carolina, spoke alongside the Olympic Project at Washington's Sasquatch Summit, and was featured in the December 2019 issue of Squatch GQ magazine.Amy's plans for 2020 and 2021 included trips to research with the Navajo in Arizona, to speak at the Metaline Falls conference in Washington, and to explore Alaska's Prince of Wales Island and Port Chatham. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, these have been postponed. As a writer herself, Amy's articles on the topic have been published in California's Bigfoot Times and in newsletters as far away as Norway and Australia. She is currently writing a book about Ohio's Tom Page, one of Peter Byrne and Roger Patterson's financial backers and a partner in their adventures. In between giving time to those efforts, Amy completed her certification classes through the Ohio State University to become an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist. For the past seven years, she has spent time gathering evidence while doing a long-term micro-study of a portion of the Allegheny National Forest. She collects photographs of flora and fauna of the area, which she shares with scientists through the iNaturalist app, and gathers audio and photographic evidence with her own long-duration equipment. Eyewitness accounts are also mapped. Amy is also continuing her studies with the Midwest Native Skills Institute, and she plans on continuing to learn and use her survival skills in her continued search for proof of Bigfoot's existence. For all of these reasons and more, Amy was recently awarded the 2020 Bigfoot Community Choice Female Researcher of the Year Award.Catch Amy every other Tuesday at 9:00 PM EST on her show, "Wild Bue Yonder," on YouTube's Beyond Explanation Channel.About Project Zoobook: Project Zoobook meets virtually bi-weekly as a think tank where these individuals discuss research, ideas, and new findings that are pertinent to both the Bigfoot topic and primate behavior. They are collaborating on micro studies of areas currently being researched across North America and on scientific endeavors that could benefit that research. Project Zoobook's wish is to carry on researcher Dr. John Bindernagel's work of making the subject of Bigfoot less taboo.

Other nations tell of a large creature much like a man but imbued with special powers and characteristics. The Ojibway of the Northern Plains believed the Rugaru appeared in times of danger and other nations agreed that the hairy apparition was a messenger of warning, telling man to change his ways.North American settlers started reporting sightings during the late 1800s and into the 1900s with the occasional finding of footprints, sporadic encounters and even a few grainy photos and videos adding to the mystery.Modern US concept can be traced to Humboldt Times      (california stories in 1958Loggers blamed acts of vandalism on bigfootOnce Bigfoot's story went public, it became a character in men's adventure magazines and cheap trade paperback novels. In these stories, he—for Bigfoot was definitely a “he”—was a primal, dangerous creature out of the past who lurked in the modern wilderness. By the 1970s, pseudo-documentaries were investigating his existence and films were portraying him as a sexual predatorIn the ‘80s, Bigfoot showed his softer side. He became “associated with environmentalism, and a symbol of the wilderness that we need to preserve,” Buhs says. One big example is the 1987 movie Harry and the Hendersons, which portrayed Bigfoot as a friendly, misunderstood creature in need of protection from John Lithgow and his family.  SIGHTINGS https://www.outsideonline.com/2097161/10-most-convincing-bigfoot-sightings Arguably the most famous and influential Bigfoot footage is the 1967 film shot by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin in Northern California.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x3__akoM5w A youth group was camping in the Marble Mountain Wilderness when leader Jim Mills noticed a strange-looking creature skulking along a ridge nearby.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx-AkdgnKnI British explorer Eric Earle Shipton snapped this photo while trekking through the Himalayas in 1951, alleging that the footprint belonged to a Yeti. The filmmaker and exact location are unknown, and many skeptics claim that there is a telling visible seam of a gorilla suit.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ2kU6e8Huo In October 2012, a group of siblings hiking in Provo Canyon thought they spotted a bear in the woods and started filming. When the creature stood up on two legs, the hikers ran—abruptly ending the shaky video. A year later, the siblings launched a kickstarter campaign to investigate other Utah bigfoot sightings.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ss_Gm_N5C48 In 2007, hunter Rick Jacobs captured some of the most famous bigfoot images to date with a camera mounted to a tree in Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest. His camera also captured clear photos of bear cubs, offering evidence that the unidentified animal was not ursine. But skeptics believe the animal is just a bear sick with mange.https://www.denverpost.com/2007/10/31/pa-man-says-he-caught-image-of-bigfoot/ Locals in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, were baffled by a footprint measuring 17.75 inches found near a residential home in 1980. According to the Associated Press, the footprint coincided with reports of strange noises and a strong but unusual odor in the area.  In 1994, former U.S. Forest patrolman Paul Freeman claimed he saw a family of bigfoots in Washington's Blue Mountains. The video is shaky and grainy, but has been deemed the real deal by so-styled bigfoot expertshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut6GDA0wG3MMississippi resident Josh Highcliff captured video of this potential bigfoot while hunting on his property in 2013. She was given the International Bigfoot Conference’s 2018 Dedicated Researcher Award for her work with this group. Amy is an active speaker, and has spoken for events and organizations. As a writer, Amy’s articles on the topic have been published in California’s Bigfoot Times and in newsletters as far away as Norway and Australia. She is currently writing a book about Ohio’s Tom Page, one of Roger Patterson’s financial backers and a partner in his adventures. She also writes a Facebook blog under her ABLE: Amy’s Bucket List Expeditions page. In between giving time to those efforts, Amy recently completed her certification classes through the Ohio State University to become an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist. She has recently started studying with the Midwest Native Skills Institute, and she plans on using her new survival skills in her continued search for proof of Bigfoot’s existence. www.phantomsandmonsters.com

The Land of Many Uses - Allegheny National Forest Have you ever looked at your favorite public land recreational spot and wondered how it became public land? What does it takes to keep it that way? What are the tensions and partnerships  that have sparked and been cultivated over its management and future? This week we're talking about the half million acre Allegheny National Forest in northwest Pennsylvania. Established in 1923, the "Land of Many Uses" receives nearly 4 million recreational visitor days per year. It also has thousands of privately-held oil and gas wells & grows some of finest quality black cherry in the world. Pennsylvania's only national forest also hosts one of the largest dams in the East. We walk through how the 1859 PA oil discovery, excessive logging in the early 20th century & the Weeks Act shaped what we enjoy today.

It’s not unusual to see fireflies flashing in backyards here and there this time of year. But deep in a Pennsylvania forest, synchronous fireflies blink in unison, a rhythmic display that lights up the night. In this episode of the Associated Press Travel podcast “Get Outta Here,” AP Travel editor Beth Harpaz invites her colleague Ted Anthony to describe his visit to the Allegheny National Forest, where he observed this magical phenomenon. Anthony, who is AP’s director of digital innovation, explains what we do and don’t know about how and why the fireflies engage in this behavior, and also offers advice on planning a trip to see it.

January 23, 2017 - This week, our time machine turns on the four-wheel drive, as we hike into Allegheny National Forest, hunting for history. Established in 1923, the forest covers over half a million acres of the northwestern Pennsylvania foothills, and offers us the chance to experience the same sights, sounds and wildlife, as our forebears stretching back to the dawn of civilization. Joining us with his walking stick is author Robert Hilliard, author of, A Season on the Allegheny. Rob has written on sports, history, and the outdoors for over two decades. He's formerly a contributing editor with Ohio Valley Outdoors magazine, and contributed to the history anthology, Rivers of Destiny. You can pick up his trail by following him on Twitter @RobHilliard_66, or toss him a like at Facebook.com/ASeasonOnTheAllegheny. You can also read his piece on The Pennsylvania Tuxedo, by Woolrich, "The Original Outdoor Clothing Company." You can also check out the history behind Johnny Cash's song, "As Long as the Grass Shall Go," off his Bitter Tears Album, and how President John F. Kennedy broke a treaty with the Seneca, which dated back to George Washington, to build the Kinzua Dam.

Evolve! Nurturing the New in Consciousness, the Arts, and Culture hosted by : Robin White Turtle Lysne, M.A., M.F.A., Ph.D. Evolve! brings you people and ideas on the cutting edge of change opening the shells of the past to move our culture into the now. We are all in great need of sustainable ideas for change. The arts and evolving consciousness are how we are bringing that change to the culture at large. This show will bring you the wise, the foolish and the heart-based to help us meet the challenges of the times we are in. This month’s show features artist Christine DeCamp. A resident of Tomales Bay for 25 years, Christine DeCamp has always been near the wild. She grew up in Allegheny National Forest in NW Pennsylvania. Since she was a child she has painted and worked in other mediums as well. She attended school in the east and moved to San Francisco in the 1980’s and then to Pt. Reyes and Inverness in the Tomales Bay region near the Pt. Reyes National Seashore. Her paintings are usually acrylic on canvas and often mixed media with gouache and watercolor on paper with gold leaf. The images in her paintings and drawings reflect her love of myth, story and shamanism. Recently she published a divination card deck when she launched her Wild Spirit Wisdom Oracle Deck in 2014. The images are of her paintings while the story on each card gives a little bit of her wisdom and inspiration from the image. In our conversation we delve into the meaning of myth, animal nature, and shamanism.
