A new report, published by 360Learning, illustrates how far online has come in recent years: from poor relation to classroom training to expected and respected and recognised for helping learners bridge their skills gaps. But is that enough? In this episode, Alice and Ross join David to explore the findings and what this tells us about our ability to scale L&D today. KEY TAKEAWAYS Both employers and employees have finally become more comfortable with digital learning. Employees now honestly believe that online learning is going to help them to do a better job while upskilling. Online learning works well in both big and small organizations. But it is smaller firms that are more receptive and are adopting AI and digital learning faster. For large organizations scalability is still a big challenge. Learning from their peers and colleagues, followed by their line managers is still preferred by most employees. A combination of face-to-face and digital learning works well. Tech is making it easier for people to share their knowledge, L&D can better tap into and benefit from this. Demonstrating to employees how the training can benefit them greatly improves the level of engagement. Clearly identify the skills people need to progress and share that knowledge with them. BEST MOMENTS 'People now expect some respect, online learning,' 'In a smaller company, it is just a bit more dynamic.' 'You can capture SME knowledge that's valuable to the entire organization.' 'Capitalize on people's primary reasons for wanting to engage and develop their skills.' Louise Perry has been described as the most influential young feminist in Britain. She claims in her book The Case Against the Sexual Revolution that the contemporary world of rough sex, hook-up culture and ubiquitous porn is harming women and she calls for a radical challenge to what she sees as the failed liberal feminism of the 20th century. Meanwhile writer Mary Harrington argues that the belief in the progressive march of history is misguided and that new technology, far from liberating women, has trapped them into commodifying their bodies in the false belief that they are empowering themselves. In this conversation hosted by Alice Thompson, columnist and interviewer at The Times, they present their case for why they think progress is at odds with feminism.  Learn more about your ad choices. Jo and Alice also touch on the importance of not missing a call as it can damage the relationship with the client. They also discuss concerns about losing control and how businesses pay for telephone answering services. Alice goes on to explain how live chat works and how it can be installed onto a website. They also address the common misconception that only large businesses can afford to outsource support. The Woodentops with  Rolo McGinty in conversation with David Eastaugh The band formed in 1983 in South London with an initial line-up of Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar, formerly of The Wild Swans and The Jazz Butcher), Simon Mawby (guitar), Alice Thompson(keyboards), Frank DeFreitas (bass guitar), and Benny Staples replacing Paul Hookham (drums). After a debut single, "Plenty" on Food Records in 1984, which received a glowing review from Morrissey in Melody Maker, they signed to the independent label Rough Trade Records, releasing a series of singles in 1985 and their debut album, Giant, in 1986. Generally well received by critics, the album's sound was characterised by acoustic guitars, but also featured accordion, marimba, strings, and trumpet sounds. The album reached No. 35 on the UK Albums Chart. A single from the album, "Good Thing", reached No. 7 on the UK Indie Chart. The band then became more experimental and frenetic when playing live, using more electronicsounds. This first became apparent as documented on the live album Live Hypno Beat (1987), which was recorded in Los Angeles in 1986. The band also started to become more 'raw' and unpredictable live, becoming one of the most exciting independent groups from the UK, while gaining an early hit on the burgeoning club scene in Ibiza with '"Why".

She's an established screenwriter, director, producer and actor and now well know for shows like " I May Destroy You," a story based on her own experience. She talks to Emma Barnett about her first book ‘Misfits: A Personal Manifesto' which is a call for honesty, empathy, inclusion and champions those who don't fit in. As you'll have heard reported in the news recently, a shortage of lorry drivers is causing serious supply chain problems, affecting amongst other things supermarkets and even some pubs! Coviid-19, tax changes, levels of pay and Brexit have all combined to contribute to an estimated shortfall of around 100,000 qualified HGV drivers. Hayley O Beirnes is retraining as a HGV driver after her cake business went under. She talks about her experience alongside Karen Stalker the MD of Stalkers Transport based in Cumbria . Plus we meet Zoe Stephens. She's spent the past 18 months through lockdown 'stuck' in Tonga in the South Pacific. She 'd been living and working as a tour guide in Beijing taking tourists, travelling to Tonga in March 2020, just as the world shut down due to Covid-19. She tells Emma about her adventure and what it's like being back home. A tribunal judge upheld her claim, awarding money for loss of earnings, pension contributions, injury to feelings and interest. Travel request: books about/set in Hawaii! Going to Maui, Big Island, and Oahu.  Have already put the True to Me series on hold, and have tried Freckled (not going to Kauai and its not that good anyway…). I have also already read The Unhoneymooners (loved). Also have another memoir on hold already called West of Then.  Not looking for a dense read but nonfiction okay.  I’m a BIG middle grade novel reader because I teach fourth grade, so please, all ages welcome. YA okay also. Thank you for recommending 2AM at the Cat’s Pajamas a While Back. LOVED IT. WELL DONE YOU!!!! You are my favorite in the podcastiverse. -Laura 2. Hello! I love your podcast,  and because of you guys my TBR now stretches into the hundreds. So… thanks, I guess? Anyway, I recently read the book Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, and I LOVED IT. I normally don’t get into epic fantasy, but it occurs to me that the reason for that is because so many novels in that genre are full of dudes. All dudes, all the time, with maybe a token female character here and there. Dudes galore. So my question is: can you recommend any epic fantasy novels, like Red Sister, where the characters are primarily women?  I’d prefer adult fiction, although YA is fine as long as it doesn’t center on eye-rolling-ly cheesy/over-dramatic teen romance. Thank you!  -Sara 3. I just finished The Witch’s Heart and really liked it! I would love a read-alike. I have already read both Madeline Miller books and loved them as well. Anything you can recommend would be great!  -Jessica 4. Hi guys! I’m looking for shifter romance recommendations. Specifically, a romance where the hero pursues the heroine with humor and gusto while she is not that interested. Usually this kind of plot doesn’t last very long so a longer ‘chase’ if you will. I enjoy a male MC that’s funny and confident but also sweet to our female MC (I don’t mind if he’s ‘alphary’). Bonus points if it’s extra smutty

For many us who are Black and embody suffering at the knee of state-sanctioned police brutality, under a president who refused to denounce white supremacists and instead told them to stand back, stand by -- we need additional restorative and healing yogic spaces for Black people, right now, until we don't. We are in a window of time that, depending on the actions we take, can and will shift lifetimes for generations of people who come after us. It is essential that we balance action with reflection and rest. We need spaces to restore, recover, rest, and cry before we have to get up and face the rest of the world and its unrelenting need to fill our days with Zoom calls. So many of us are trying to prioritize our health and stay alive. We are living through the unknown, unfamiliar together. Please be compassionate with yourself and others journeying with you. The culture created in yoga spaces with Black people has to be affirming and accountable to caustic microaggressions. We should not have to bottle and absorb someone else's carelessness for our lives and those lost while creating the space for restoration for everyone else. The burden is too heavy and not shared. Hear yoga teachers Ericka Jones, Lisa Sorenson, and Tish Torres alongside the voice of Dr. Rashawn Ray speaking at the Alliance for Health Policy's Summit on Disruptors and Transformers Ahimsa is a limited series audiomemoir on yoga, wellness, and Black Lives in 2020 written and narrated by Dr. Yasmene Mumby. Now, in this movement for Black lives to matter, while we are amplifying Black voices and intentionally honoring space for people who aren't always heard yet have plenty of insight, wisdom, experience, and compassion to share, listen in as we explore the survival and evolution of a society that must honor the lives of Black people. A collective audiomemoir of the growing movement of yoga instructors and studio owners who transmute trauma into healing. Meet and hear the writer of this piece, Yasmene. This is a moment to look inward, look at how you are practicing ahimsa in the midst of the anti-Black racism and harm you witness. How are you creating a sanctuary space of healing and peace, without the spiritual bypassing? Ahimsa, often translated as non-harm, does not mean nonaction. It does not mean check out and detach from the suffering you witness. "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." - Viktor E. Frankl This piece was crafted while feeling overtired watching the words and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrangled to suppress and silence the very people his words were meant to inspire to act. This piece was crafted for your yoga instructor, studio owner, and friend who's having trouble living their yoga. Hear yoga teachers Kelley Palmer, Stephanie Hicks, Marcus Stanback, Dan'yelle Williamson, Susanna Barkataki, and Anjali Sunita. Rolo McGinty in conversation talking about life in the Woodentops  The band formed in 1983 in South London with an initial line-up of Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar, formerly of The Wild Swans and The Jazz Butcher), Simon Mawby (guitar), Alice Thompson (keyboards), Frank DeFreitas (bass guitar), and Paul Hookham (drums). The band then became more experimental and frenetic when playing live, using more electronic sounds. In 1987, Thompson left to be replaced by Anne Stephenson of The Communards. The more experimental mood continued on the second album Wooden Foot Cops on the Highway, released the following year, which failed to live up to the expectations set by their debut. Most notably, the listeners of Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM voted their song "Stop This Car" number 15 out of 106 in the KROQ Top 106.7 Countdown of 1988, outperforming many more established acts, and one of the album's standout tracks, "Wheels Turning", became a dancefloor favourite. The Woodentops continued to play live, touring the world until 1992, and tracks such as "Tainted World" became a regular on New York radio station Kiss FM with DJ Tony Humphries. Vocalist and guitarist Rolo McGinty, who also wrote all Woodentops' songs, resurfaced with the DJ band Pluto in the 1990s, the Dogs Deluxe electronica project and also provided vocals for Gary Lucas's, Gods and Monsters. Guitarist Simon Mawby was briefly a member of The House of Love in the early 1990s. The Woodentops returned to live performances in September 2006 and, in October 2009, they performed in a special concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London's South Bank. They also curated the events in the Front Room of the same theatre with an exhibition of works by artist Panni Bharti, and concerts by musicians Worm, Othon and Ernesto Tomasini.

Who are the new voices pushing for change in the food system? Sheila Dillon hears from Alice Thompson of Social Bite, a charity that distributes over 100,000 hot drinks and meals to Scotland’s most vulnerable people every year from its sandwich shops and every Monday afternoon they invite people experiencing homelessness to their restaurant Vesta for a free sit-down two-course meal. Sheila also meets Ben Adler who was the husband of TV producer Pat Llewellyn who made stars of the Two Fat Ladies and Gordon Ramsay and launched Jamie Oliver's TV career. Pat died of metastatic breast cancer in October 2017 and we hear from Jamie Oliver about his memories of Pat and what made her so good at nurturing new talent. To honour the impact Pat had on the food industry the Food and Farming Awards is launching a Pat Llewellyn New Talent Award. It will see Ben and his co-judge Barney Desmazery, Senior Food Editor at BBC Good Food, on the search for fresh voices in the food system who could be campaigners, innovative cooks and people taking a different approach to a food or drinks business. To understand more about the types of people they might be looking for they met one of the strongest but lesser-known voices in the food system today. At Where The Light Gets In restaurant in Stockport they met founder Sam Buckley who is taking a new approach to every facet of running a restaurant with unflinching principles when it comes to responsibility for his staff and for the environment. We also hear from last year's Food and Farming Awards winner Kimberley Bell and our Future Food Award judges entrepreneur William Kendall and the Oxford Cultural Collective's Don Sloan meet Safia Qureshi who is building an alternative to disposable cups with her business CupClub.
