39. Frank Allocco: The Backup Notre Dame QB who became a High School Coaching Legend.

December 31, 1973... The Fighting Irish taking on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl with the National Championship hanging in the balance. Ara Parseghian coaches his Notre Dame kids to a 24-23 upset win over Bear Bryant with Tom Clements leading the way and Frank Allocco on the sidelines, as usual, rooting on the starting QB. That was Allocco's job as the backup quarterback and he did it the way he did everything... with grace and enthusiasm. And after the 1974 season ended, Alloco's patience and work ethic would pay off. He would be the starting QB for Notre Dame. And then he wasn't. A separated shoulder before the season began ended his senior year. He would never start a game while playing at South Bend. Most would be devastated that the dream they had worked so hard to fulfill only to have it taken away when they were so close to achieving it. But not Frank. He admired greatly his coach Ara Parseghian who would often say, ‘Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents that which under prosperous conditions may have remained dormant.” Allocco graduated from ND and started a coaches clinic for basketball. Years later, that turned into a high school coaches job in California in Walnut Creek where he won a state championship in 1995. From there, he went to Concord De La Salle High School and won a 2nd state championship there. He would go on to win 600 games faster than any coach in the history of California and ended his 24 year coaching career 2nd all-time in winning percentage and is the only coach to win state titles with 2 different schools. Now at the University of San Francisco, Allocco is still changing young people lives, just like his coach and mentor Parseghian did at Notre Dame. He relishes his time in South Bend and tells us how he went from 9th on the depth chart to the backup. How he admired the tenacity of another player at Notre Dame just looking for a chance: Rudy Ruettiger. And how a chance meeting with an 86-year old "Angel" changed his life. 50 years ago he was the backup to the man on the cover of the 9/30/74 issue of Sports Illustrated, Tom Clements, but on the Past Our Prime podcast he's the starter and the winner. To date he's picked up over 40 awards for his films and screenplays in categories such as Best Director, Best Narrative Feature, Best Short Film, Best Screenplay, Gran Jury Award, Special Jury Award and Audience Choice. After a sometimes hair-raising spell directing reality shows, he got to direct his first feature, a comedy called The Truth About Lies, in 2015. David Allocco is one who was always creative with a love for comedy, media, and creating original content. When he was at Syracuse he created comedy sketches and directed the university's sportscast segments. His entry into his working life post college was in advertising, but he felt he could not use his full set of creative talents in that world. Remembering the satisfaction he felt when he mentored younger students during his college years he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become a Social Studies teacher. It is in teaching that Dave discovered he could do everything he was interested in. He created electives like "Terrorism Today" and "The History of Sports." Moreover he could fully be himself using every talent he has. He said it best with this line, "I always wanted to do comedy and I feel like I do it every day." Beyond this he has inspired so many students to critically study history, but to also pursue their passions into careers "that never feel like work"...just like he has. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thestolenhourspodcast/message

Quindi tu compri a mille e vendi a 5 mila. Allora se noi entriamo con due ospedali, che ti danno 10 farmacie…” Queste sono alcune frasi tratte dalle intercettazioni emerse nelle indagini calabresi e noi di questo dovevamo parlare…solo di questo…quanta gente non avrà potuto curarsi a causa della sottrazione dei farmaci? Quanta sofferenza? Quanto dolore, quanta disperazione può creare una cosa del genere? Qualcuno sarà morto a causa dei farmaci dirottati altrove? Qualcuno avrà dovuto provvedere in altro modo?

He touches on a subject that is dear to us, providing opportunity. “Give to kids for their future.” He says that right now is the most important time to give to any athletic programs due to the financial impact of Covid-19. As we found out in our chat with him, Coach Allocco's Excel basketball camps came to be because of the impact a coach had on him. The camps have turned out to be a community favorite. Not only are the athletes improving their basketball skills, but they are also learning more about how to navigate the game of life. Frank Allocco has had an impact on so many athletes and now coaches. When asked what advice he gives coaches, he said that it is important to find different approaches for different kids. Find what gets them motivated. We are so thankful for the time we spent with him. If you want to hear more from Coach Frank Allocco, check out his website

It's a fabulous fun-filled BEHIND THE LENS to not only wrap up 2017, but the third year of BTL! What better way to end the year than with two of my favorite guys to interview as we talk about the award-winning comedy THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES! Returning to BTL is award-winning writer/director PHIL ALLOCCO and joining him is one of the film's stars, the uber-talented FRAN KRANZ. I had a chance to sit down with Fran earlier this year at LAFF to talk about the glorious "A Midsummer Night's Dream" which had its premiere at LAFF and he was a joy! And yes! Not only does Fran talk a bit about "A Midsummer Night's Dream", but reveals the film just got a distribution deal with release set for Spring 2018! And speaking of distribution, both gentlemen provide some insight into the distribution experience in this ever-changing media age, as well as providing their perspectives on visual comedy, acting, casting, and more! But before we get to Phil and Fran, take a listen to the stars of THE BALLAD OF LEFTY BROWN – Bill Pullman, Peter Fonda, and Tommy Flanagan – with some clips of our exclusive interviews with them. And hear some more about the Golden Globe-nominated THE SHAPE OF WATER with our exclusive interview with production designer PAUL AUSTERBERRY. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

He's just been fired from his job, lost his apartment in a fire and his girlfriend gave him the boot. And it's only Wednesday. Now, at the ripe old age of thirty-something, he is forced to move in with May, his booze-swindling man-obsessed mother. This is the last straw. Gilby's life is bleak until best friend Kevin drags him to a family get-together, where he meets Rachel, Kevin's very beautiful but very married sister. Rachel is the very thing Gilby needs to get his life back on track. Desperate to impress her, Gilby starts to weave a web of lies; one bigger than the next. Now in a sticky mess, Gilby is forced to face the uncomfortable truth about himself before he can find a way out of his very own Lies. This week on BEHIND THE LENS, debbie welcomes some very eclectic filmmakers talking about very unique – and fun – films. First up, director Madellaine Paxson joins debbie live to talk about her first feature film, BLOOD PUNCH. What makes Paxson's choice of BLOOD PUNCH even more interesting as her feature directorial debut is that her prior work, and that of BLOOD PUNCH writer Eddie Guzelian, has been as screenwriter for such terrific kids programming as "Power Rangers RPM", "The Tigger Movie", "Go, Diego, Go!" and more! From kids to comedic horror. And Madellaine explains it all! Then writer/director Phil Allocco is live talking about his latest rom com charmer, THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES; and when I say charmer, I do mean charmer! And listen to some powerful excerpts of debbie's exclusive interview with RACING EXTINCTION director, Louie Psihoyos, as they talk about one of the "Must See" documentaries of the year. Plus, in the last segment, you'll hear a little bit from debbie's exclusive director Scott Christopherson and former Utah Sheriff Dub Lawrence for some insight into the documentary PEACE OFFICER. In these troubled times post-Ferguson and continuing allegations of excessive force by police around the country, Dub Lawrence brings his personal story and personal tragedy to us with insight and objectivity. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
