Academy Award-winning vegan filmmaker and former National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos joins us to share how he is using the power of storytelling to spark transformation for animal rights, human health, and environmental conservation. Highlights include: How The Cove, his Oscar-wining documentary and the first documentary to sweep all the film guilds, inspired activism that helped reduce dolphin and porpoise slaughter in Japan by over 90%; How his team's audacious projection events of endangered species on iconic buildings including The Empire State Building, The United Nations and The Vatican for their film Racing Extinction, received over 5.4 billion media views and led to laws that protect some of Earth's most endangered animals; How his third film, The Game Changers, a film about plant-based super athletes that exposes the myth that meat is necessary for protein, strength, and optimal health, triggered a 350% spike in online searches within a month of premiering on Netflix; What his Netflix Series, You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment, uncovered about the 8-week health benefits of plant-based eating, and how the results went viral; His most recent film Mission: Joy a buddy film starring his Holiness, The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu about how to find joy in a world of sorrow has been seen by 10's of millions of people around the globe; Where Louie's focus is turning next: a new film exposing the destructive health impacts of plastic. See episode website for show notes, links, and transcript:  https://www.populationbalance.org/podcast/louie-psihoyos   OVERSHOOT | Shrink Toward Abundance OVERSHOOT tackles today's interlocked social and ecological crises driven by humanity's excessive population and consumption. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings.  Hosted by Nandita Bajaj and Alan Ware. We are very excited to welcome back to the show one of the most visionary minds of our time. He's an Oscar-winning filmmaker, an award-winning photographer, and a passionate environmental activist. Through his lens, he has captured not only the beauty of our world but also the urgent need to protect it.   From his groundbreaking documentary “The Cove,” which exposed shocking animal abuse in Japan, to his awe-inspiring projects like “Racing Extinction” and “The Game Changers,” Louie Psihoyos has consistently pushed the boundaries of storytelling to inspire action and ignite change in all of us.   Today, he's here with us to discuss his new documentary series “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment,” which chronicles the recent Stanford University study that put a group of genetically identical twins on different diets – plant-based and omnivore – for two months to explore how the foods we consume impact the body.   So tune in to this must-listen episode to be inspired and empowered as we explore how what we eat dictates who we are and even what we can become.   “I want to know the truth because I want to defend the truth. I can defend a lifestyle choice of my own, you know, but I've been to CAFOs – these, you know, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations –  myself. I've been there. I've smelled them. You look at these animals; you're in that horror show that most people can't get to, but people aren't making an informed decision about where their animals come from. They're doing it emotionally. They're doing it by this bro science. And I want to find out the truth.” - Louie Psihoyos   What we discuss in this episode: - The inspiration for You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment.  - Blue zones and longevity. - How telomere length dictates how we age. - Challenges presented during the study. - The exciting health transformation the vegans experienced as a result of the study. - Exposure to and impact of endocrine-disrupting plastics. - Clothes and the environment. - Louie's exciting upcoming projects.   Resources: - Watch You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment | Netflix Official Site - https://www.netflix.com/title/81133260 - Oceanic Preservation Society - https://opsociety.org/ - Instagram: Louie Psihoyos - https://www.instagram.com/psihoyos/ - How to be a Conscious Consumer with Healabel app creator Adriane Marie - Switch4Good - https://switch4good.org/how-to-be-a-conscious-consumer-with-healabel-app-creator-adriane-marie/ - California Cloth Foundry - https://clothfoundry.com/   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. One of the most interesting people I have ever met, Louie took home the Oscar for The Cove, an Ocean's 11-esque thriller that powerfully exposed the gruesome underbelly of the Japanese dolphin trade. Louie also documented the rise of the plant-based athlete in the James Cameron produced Netflix hit, The Gamechangers and powerfully drew attention to mass species extinction in 2015's Racing Extinction. In this EXCLUSIVE PLANT CEO special we speak with Louie Psihoyos, Executive Director of Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS). Louie has been creating highly moving documentaries for over 10 years now. With the thread of the films being that we are already going through the 6th mass extinction on the earth as result of human interference. This led him to his first film 'The Cove' which won an Academy Award for Best documentary feature, that exposed dolphin hunting. The second film 'Racing Extinction' recently won the Best Green Film of the Decade, which explored species extinction and exposed the shark finning trade. We also focus on the world of Super Athletes like Lewis Hamilton who have turned to eating plant-based in 'The Game Changers'. The world of documentary film is a particularly powerful avenue for social impact. Today’s guest, Louie Psihoyos, is an example of someone that has figured out how to make a massive impact through storytelling and cinema. Louie made waves with his first film, The Cove. Sweeping awards and informing a worldwide audience on terrible dolphin hunting practices in Japan — his film helped to reduce dolphin hunting by 90%. Since then, Louie has continued to create numerous award-winning documentaries around the conservation movement that have reached millions, if not billions.Louie was a National Geographic photographer for 18 years and was involved in helping to kickstart the recycling movement with his photography. In 2005, he started the Oceanic Preservation Society and since then has used film as his main weapon for conservation. Louie exemplifies the dream of so many filmmakers: moving hearts and changing minds. In our conversation, we do a deep dive into his philosophy towards film and activism and his rules for making an impactful piece of art. He shares the important ingredients that go into his projects and what it takes to ignite social movements — and ultimately — positive change. We cover the practical side of this and get into the pros and cons of defining oneself as an environmental activist. In this episode I share some of my thoughts on documentary that recently broke the internet, The Game Changers. The Game Changers is a documentary that for the most part highlights the accomplishments of elite athletes who are following a plant-based diet. It does talk about some of the environmental and health issues associated with plant-based diets, but the primary focus of the movie is on the athletes and their performance. Many people have been "debunking" this film via podcasts, articles, and YouTube videos and this has resulted in a lot of back and forth with responses being directed toward these "debunking" efforts. Personally it amazes me how worked up people get over plants, but it has definitely made for some great reading and watching online. If you haven't seen the documentary yet, you can stream it on Netflix and get more information about the documentary and the science they used to back of their claims here: https://gamechangersmovie.com/the-film/# Here is an article I wrote that corresponds to the film and some critiques of it as well as my thoughts on vegan athletes: https://strength-and-health.blogspot.com/2019/10/the-vegan-athlete-myth.html Show Notes: My thoughts on the documentary. Critics and "debunkers" of the film. Why London Real's Brian Rose claims the athletes featured in the film are not at top of their respective sports when their titles and records say otherwise. The rest of Patrik Baboumian's diet that Chris Kresser failed to mention on his latest episode of the JRE. Why I feel the sensationalism around plant-based diets needs to stop. Why didn't Joe Rogan talk about The Game Changers, a film he has been very critical of, with the film's director Louie Psihoyos when he was on the JRE the day before Chris Kresser came on to "debunk" it? It is not any harder to fuel athletic performance with a plant-based diet than an omnivorous diet despite what the "experts" claim. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/strength-and-health/support

Twelve years later she competed in the 2012 Olympic Games in London at the age of 39 years of age won an Olympic Silver Medal. Dotsie shares her journey of compulsive exercise, disordered eating, and recovery where movement was a part of her recovery. For Dotsie, going dairy-free was important to her because of the ethical stand on situations of what goes on behind closed doors in our food system. She did not want to pay into that system anymore and changed her diet to more of a plant-based diet.   She noticed that it made an impact on the way her body felt during training. She shares her tips and tools to make sure you get the amount of fuel you need!    You Know She’s Legit: After concluding a prolific professional cycling career that produced a medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games, eight US national championships, two Pan American gold medals and a world record, Dotsie Bausch has become a powerful influencer for plant-based eating for athletes and non-athletes alike. Named by VegNews in 2019 as one of the top 20 most influential vegans in the world, she utilizes her degree in plant-based nutrition to inform her impassioned messages as an advocate on behalf of humans, planet earth and animals. Never one to shy away from facing staggering odds – just like she did in the Olympics while riding for Team USA, whose unlikely and triumphant story is chronicled in the Netflix documentary “Personal Gold” – her latest initiative is founding the non-profit Switch4Good. Switch4Good launched in early 2018 with a television commercial featuring six Olympians from four different countries and proves that cow’s milk is not part of a high-performance diet. The ground-breaking commercial aired on NBC during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games closing ceremonies and on ABC during the Academy Awards broadcast. View the commercial at https://Switch4Good.org. Bausch is also one of the stars of the film The Game Changers (http://gamechangersmovie.com), which chronicles the story of the world’s most dangerous myth. Directed by Academy Award-winner Louie Psihoyos and executive produced by Oscar-winner James Cameron, The Game Changers released to worldwide audiences in October of 2019 and in just one week, became the #1 downloaded film of all time on iTunes. Long before embodying radiant health and becoming an influential game-changer, Bausch struggled for years with severe eating disorders and a recreational drug habit, that combined, led to a suicide attempt. It was during her recovery that she discovered her gift and love for the bike. Bausch speaks passionately around the world, spreading her message about the numerous benefits – humane, nutritional and environmental – of plant-based eating. Her popular TEDx Talk, “Olympic Level Compassion,” has garnered over 275,000 views and has been a catalyst of change for thousands of people.   To find out more about Dotsie and to get connected go to:   https://dotsiebauschusa.com/ https://switch4good.org/ Dotsie’s Ted Talk: Olympic Level Compassion https://dotsiebauschusa.com/about/#   Instagram: Veganolympian Other Resources https://ohsheglows.com/   30 Minute Vegan Dinners with Megan Sadd https://www.carrotsandflowers.com/30-minute-vegan-dinners-cookbook/

If you have watched The Cove, Racing Extinction or most recently, The Game Changers you have seen the work of Louie Psihoyos. He is a master of the art of storytelling and will inspire you to take action. His ideas and thinking outside the box started in the very beginning when he was hired by National Geographic at the age of 23 as a photographer. Louie is also the Executive Director of the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) which he cofounded with entrepreneur Jim Clark in 2005. The mission is to educate the public of an ocean in peril and showcasing the environmentalists on the frontline of the fight to save one of our most valuable resources. The Cove, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Film of 2009 and over 75 other awards around the world. An annual dolphin hunt in a secret cove in Taiji, Japan suggests a microcosm of a larger picture: man’s disregard for the planet. The next film, Racing Extinction, brings to light that our world is dying and we are in a race against time. Louie also projected large scale stunning images of the endangered wildlife with pertinent facts onto the United Nations Headquarters, Empire State Building, and the Vatican. Learn more here https://racingextinction.com Now we welcome The Game Changers! In this film we take a journey with James Wilks, an elite special forces trainer and winner of the UFC, as he dives into the world of nutrition. He is on a quest to heal but what he finds ultimately changes his life! https://gamechangersmovie.com Now the films alone could easily be fascinating conversation but Louie has lived a full and adventurous life. You will not have a dull moment as you listen to him share his inspirations for his films, why he went vegan and some very fun facts! Learn how a baby dinosaur was named Baby Louie, how a photo and kiss led to him being cast in a Sylvester Stallone movie, and what it was like carrying around 2 boxes of human bones for a year and a half! Now, I could not make this up if I wanted to and please forgive my occasional bursts of laughter as we talked. Louie Psihoyos is a Greek-American filmmaker, photographer and director. He began his career as one of the first new photographers that National Geographic had hired in several years. He is perhaps best known as the Director of The Cove, about the slaughter of dolphins in Japan, which won an Oscar in 2010. He has also made the film Racing Extinction, about the sixth global mass extinction. And he’s currently working on The Gamechangers with James Cameron, a film about vegan super athletes due out later this year. He’s also the Founder and Chief Executive of the Oceanic Preservation Society which works to bring together artists and activists to protect the oceans and the planet. In the course of this conversation we talk about how Louie pioneered a new form of environmental journalism when he was at National Geographic, how a chance meeting with Stephen Spielberg, and a passion for dinosaurs, ignited an interest in extinction, and why he believes that a plant-based diet is the best for our health, our wallets and the planet. Magda Freedom Rod is an environmentalist and lifestyle guide. Through her website Visionary-Lifestyle.com, she helps people achieve their highest potential with conscious eating, yoga and meditation. If you’ve not listened to them yet, check out episodes 24 and 74 where Magda talks about her e-course Conscious Eating 101.com and how to set new intentions for Spring. Earth Day is an opportunity to love Mother Earth and be thankful for all that she provides. “99.9% of people don’t make the connection that their food choices impact the environment in a major way.” Concern for the planet’s health is what first made Magda switch to a plant based diet. She uses Earth Day to get people to think about their impact on the planet. What is one thing that we can do to start reducing our carbon footprint and take care of Mother Earth? “Three simple words: Eat More Plants. The more plants you eat, the less meat you eat, and the lighter your footprint on the planet.” Thanks to documentaries such as Cowspiracy (if you’ve not seen this, we highly recommend it!), more and more people are becoming aware of the destructive impact of intensive agriculture. The word is getting out! Going vegan is not just good for the body, it’s good for the planet too. Magda talked us through just some of the factors that make intensive animal farming so detrimental to Mother Earth: Climate change: animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change, which is the biggest threat to human survival. The methane from the cows and the deforestation of the rainforest for cattle grazing are the two main factors at play. And grass fed cows are just as guilty, if not more—they produce 40-60% more methane! Overfishing: in 90% of the oceans, big fish are gone. We’re fishing at unsustainable rates and the ocean simply isn’t replenishing. What’s more, for every pound of seafood, there are 5 pounds of bi-kill (whales, dolphins, sea turtles, endangered species that are caught in the nets at the same time). Pollution: toxic waste from animal farms leeches into the soil and contaminates ground water. We were shocked by showing animal feces being sprayed into the environment. Species extinction through habitat destruction: a perfect example is the cute koala, which will be extinct by 2030 because its home is being cleared out to make space for… grass fed cattle! A great film to watch is Racing Extinction by Louie Psihoyos. Amazon rainforest destruction: the lungs of the planet are being destroyed at the crazy rate of an acre a second! 91% of the Amazon has been decimated for animal agriculture. Fresh water: it takes 2500-5000 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef. 50% of the water in the US is used for animal agriculture. Is that a sustainable practice on a planet plagued with drought? We don’t think so!! Especially when a pound of quinoa, rice, greens or hemp can be produced using under 150 gallons of water. We are facing a frightening situation, and yet if everyone switched to a plant-based diet, Mother Earth would regenerate itself. “Our personal choices are actually really powerful”, says Magda. The more people are inspired to eat more plants and less animals, the faster the world can heal. Magda’s six-week program Conscious Eating 101 contains all the resources you need to start loving both yourself and Mother Earth. With recipes, videos, homework and books you can deepen your knowledge and transition into a healthier plant based diet. Be part of the solution. Honor Mother Earth and eat more plants!

The mind’s ability to envision more than what is physically present in the world is an astounding fact of life. We’re always imagining, thinking, and living in our heads. Our thoughts and our imaginations shape how we see the world, they shape our words and our actions. This is nothing new. We’ve been doing this for all our lives. as far as we can remember. But that’s why we take a closer look and ask the question: how do our imagined lives shape our reality? In his Oscar winning movie "the Cove" photojournalist Louie Psihoyos takes us on an adventure that perhaps shows us more than we want to see. “I lead an elite team of activists to penetrate a secret cove in Japan to reveal a dark secret,” Psihoyos said. The Cove, part action thriller, part nature film is the exciting story behind a covert operation to document one of the most horrific atrocities of the 21st century, the systematic slaughter of dolphins. “They kill more dolphins than anywhere on the planet right there at this cove, which incidentally is in a Japanese national park, a marine sanctuary,” Psihoyos said. That's the irony of this whole thing. But it's also the scene of the captive dolphin trade. Most of the captive dolphins in the world come from this little cove.” Louie Psihoyos Ever since I was a kid I've loved dolphins. These smiling marine mammals are the very image of fun and freedom. Growing up in Southern California I used love to see the dolphin and killer whale shows at ocean theme parks like Marine Land and Sea World. But I never really gave any thought to where these animals came from. The captive dolphin industry was started more than 50 years ago by a man named Rick O'Barry. “Rick O'Barry is the guy who captured and trained the four dolphins who collectively played the part of Flipper, the popular 1960s television series ‘Flipper',” said Psihoyos. “And (he) spent about 10 years building that industry up and he's sent the last 40 tearing it down. The turning point for him was when Cathy, the primary dolphin that played the part of Flipper committed suicide in his arms that he realized that they are more sentient, more intelligent than anyone realized including himself and really turned himself around after that, and he's probably become the world's best known dolphin advocate.” One of the greatest ironies in nature is the dolphin's smile. In captivity that characteristic grin masks a deep sorrow of intelligent creatures that are rounded up and put on display for our amusement. And in the Cove those less suited for the marine mammal sideshow are killed and butchered to be eaten.  But here's the greatest irony. With high levels of mercury in the world's oceans brought on by industrial pollution dolphin meat is toxic.
