This week I spoke to Moon Juice founder and CEO Amanda Chantal Bacon. Amanda, as it says in the PR email I received, “has a captivating personal story that led her to create her company,” but we barely touched on that in this conversation. Instead we had a candid conversation that began with talking about shame and a book (All Fours). And spanned to finding love later, aging, mourning past life phases, intergenerational friendship, and the myth of balance. I found this to be a very comforting conversation from start to finish; she was so wise and easygoing that I left feeling like I'd just hung up with a good friend.Despite the fact that I've been a fan of her products for over a decade, use her face wash daily, and credit her Beauty Pills for keeping my acne in check—we didn't even talk about her her company origin story, or even one of her specific products. Next time. Let us know what you think eavesdropping. While her peers gleefully began drinking and experimenting with drug use, Amanda Chantal Bacon spent her late teens and early twenties supporting her body in detoxification. After a childhood and adolescence filled with a myriad of prescriptions that left her feeling more unlike herself than ever, Amanda used her newfound autonomy to take baby steps toward improving her health in body and mind. Though she didn't know it at the time, Amanda was setting the groundwork for Moon Juice, the adaptogenic wellness company known for its supplements that support beauty, energy and libido. With her honest, grounded approach, Amanda emphasizes that while it may take time, it is most definitely possible to make positive, long lasting changes in business and in life. Thanks for listening! Diana and Lisa dissect the dreadful What I Eat In A Day trend with “guest appearances” (not really) by Gwyneth Paltrow, Martha Stewart, and Moon Juice founder Amanda Chantal Bacon. They explore the moral implications of so many smoothies and activated cashews, as well as how much it really costs to eat like a “wellness”-obsessed celebrity.
In episode sixty of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts talks to the founder and CEO of Moon Juice, Amanda Chantal Bacon. Amanda Chantal Bacon has known she had purpose since she was a child- it just took her some time to really hone in on what, exactly, that purpose was. She’s lived a few different lives. She grew up around fashion, something she felt disillusioned by, and was diagnosed with a chronic illness around the age of 5- the repercussions of which she was still feeling well into her 20s. She lived in New Zealand, Italy, Argentina and her native United States, working as a teacher, a writer and a chef. It was while she was working in the fine dining space that her autoimmune condition was as its worst, so she took some time out to revisit what she knew as a child- that she had purpose, she just needed to find out what it was.Amanda embarked on something of a “wellness” journey, and in 2011 Moon Juice was born- a business that began as a juice bar in Venice, California (before words like “organic,” “raw” and “cold pressed” were a part of global vernacular) but soon became more of an immersive wellness brand, producing and selling supplements, foods and the now iconic “dusts” that consumers could take home and work into their own routine. Amanda had never, ever considered entering the beauty space with Moon Juice, despite its growing link to the wellness industry. What prompted her to rethink that stance was a beauty-editor-approved, cult skincare product that had visible benefits for Amanda’s skin, but would’ve flared up her autoimmune condition with repeat use. The solution, it seemed, was to develop a clean alternative, and in 2018 Moon Juice’s skincare line was created. In this conversation, Amanda shares how a 2015 viral story online saw her ridiculed globally and, in turn, her business boom, the value in slipping behind the scenes of your company, and how a Chinese Soup served as the inspiration for one of her brand’s most popular skin serums.Read more at glowjournal.comFollow Moon Juice on Instagram at @moonjuiceStay up to date with Gemma on Instagram at @gemkwatts and @glow.journal, or get in touch at hello@gemkwatts.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Amanda Chantal Bacon needs no introduction. Her galactic brand Moon Juice launched in LA many moons ago and has since expanded from cult juices and cookbooks to adaptogens and skincare. Amanda started Moon Juice as a single mom with a small loan from friends and family. Today she has created a brand with a worldwide following and is basically an artist disguised as an entrepreneur (just flip through her cookbook for all the masterpieces). As well as business and wellness, in this episode you can expect to hear Nikki and Amanda discuss mamahood and the power (and challenge) of staying in your feminine during this period. Ashwagandha. Rehmannia. Maca. Pearl Extract. Try to say some of the ingredients on a Moon Juice label, and you may wonder if you’re speaking a foreign language. But in her 20s, the frequently used adaptogens were part of the all-natural puzzle that helped to heal Amanda Chantal Bacon of an autoimmune condition — inspiring her to create the cult-favorite brand. What started as a stand-alone fresh pressed juice bar in Venice back in 2011 is now a global holistic company, selling everything from medicinal mushroom, herb, and mineral dusts to skin care essentials everywhere from Sephora to Nordstrom. In episode 91, Amanda talks to me about what caused her to stop eating gluten at age 5 and what life was like during her teenage years as a New Yorker, traveling abroad to Italy, and culinary school in Vermont. She also tells me about the situation surrounding that first Los Angeles shop, and the science that stands behind the products she’s selling that helps her shut out the non-believers. Amanda Chantal Bacon is often ranked alongside Gwyneth Paltrow when it comes to seminal figures in wellness. But that's not to say she's fully comfortable with it. "I try to stay out of the fray of what the wellness world has become, which is odd, because I'm smack dab in the center of it, and have probably contributed to a lot of everything that I shy away from now," Chantal Bacon said on this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. "And so what can I do -- I do feel like I was there and helped create a bit of this beast -- to really stay true to the mission and to spread that to my team?" Talking about it in earnest is one way to address the problem. Chantal Bacon also seeks to live out her values with Moon Juice, which opened its first shop in Venice, California in 2011 and carries products that offer more than what you'll find in just about any grocery store or gas station these days. "What would be the difference between a Moon Juice with some type of pasteurization on it in a cute juice shop, and a juice for maybe $2.99 in a grocery store that's the same blend and organic?" she asked. "It would really be the difference of a label. So that didn't feel worthwhile. Herbs, though, that was something that when you scale it, it makes sense. Your costs go down. You're able to reach more people. Supplements are actually something that you need scale for safety reasons alone." In the latest Glossy Beauty podcast, Chantal Bacon discussed Moon Juice's focus on research over marketing ("people are always surprised to find out that we really don't spend any money on marketing"), the company's use of Instagram and its move into beauty and skincare products.

Amanda Chantal Bacon is a world-traveling chef, mother, sustainable lifestyle leader, passionate food educator, and the founder of Moon Juice. Celebrating the power of plant alchemy, Moon Juice burst onto the scene in 2012, and the wellness world has never been the same. Perhaps most well-known for her “controversial” daily food diary published on Elle, it’s safe to say that Amanda is otherworldly. In our inaugural podcast, we dive right into what makes the Moon Juice CEO so unique, dissecting the esoteric practices and food philosophies she subscribes to that keep her mind and body cosmically aligned. Though Amanda is a longtime friend of mbg, this is the very first time she has gotten so candid about her past and journey toward a successful career in the food and lifestyle industry. This discussion unveils the nontraditional path Amanda took to get to where she is today—from dropping acid in the woods as a sixth grader to moving to South America, working in a bakery, and eventually shaping the vision that is Moon Juice. Amanda is living proof that the path to success is anything but linear— and we can’t wait to share her unconventional story with you.
