About Amanda Laden: Amanda Laden is the Founder and CEO of Period to Pause, the leading platform for elevating people's voices in their own health, healthcare treatment, and well-being. Amanda started Period to Pause to equip people to advocate for their needs, change a system that was not set up to support womxn and gender non-conforming folks, and to help people to rise, vocalize, and mobilize to change the healthcare system. She is also a Growth Strategist and the CEO of The Firebrand Institute and works with organizations to create strategies to support diverse populations and create cultures of inclusion and belonging. In her spare time she hosts events over food and wine to create community, connection, and change. She currently resides in San Diego with her Bulldog/poodle rescue, Bernie. Fun facts - Amanda has traveled to over 50 countries and loves eating and drinking her way around the world. What We Discuss In this Episode: Amanda shares what brought her into this area of work, and her own personal story of going through the medical system being undiagnosed with a disease for about 20 years. Finally, after being heard by one of her doctors, the “tide began to turn” in her life. Amanda shares her thoughts on a small piece of this system issue: societally, we're taught to be quiet and not to make a noise or cause any issues; and we have to realize it's well within our rights to ask questions. Amanda recommends before you go into an appointment, write down every single question you have, ask for clarification, demand that they spend more than seven minutes with you in the. Our bodies are miraculous “machines.” We often know when something doesn't feel right. If you feel you don't know how to convey to your healthcare provider what you feel is going on with your body, take someone with you to the appointment who can advocate for you. Let's face it, it's daunting going into your doctor, or your health practitioner - they're using language you don't understand unless you've been to medical school, and if you're seeing an OB/GYN or other female doctors who focus on female health issues, they use a lot of language that we just don't know and we're not taught. Amanda discussed how some are fortunate enough to go outside of the system and find naturopaths and other doctors that can treat us in different ways. She also advocates finding somebody who's more of an Eastern medicine style practitioner, such as an acupuncturist, under certain circumstances. But it really, unfortunately, is incumbent on us to continue advocating for yourselves, even to the point of saying, “I'm not accepting this because I know my body, and I know how it feels.” We discuss that nowadays people are staying alive longer. So why wouldn't we want to address health and keeping people well rather what we often hear – “No, we're not going to cover this unless you're really showcasing you have something wrong.” Amanda shares an example of if you're looking for doctor that can treat menopause or help you to find the right treatment plan for you, make sure that you have one that specifically states on their website or wherever their office is set up, that they specialize in menopause, perimenopause, or in Amanda's case, it was very important that she found a doctor that understood adenomyosis and endometriosis. Do your research ahead of time. Amanda stresses that we all have the ability to make choices that are right for us - intuitively we often know what our bodies are doing. So Amanda challenges those who are listening, to use your voice when you feel that you need to, to advocate for yourself. Amanda Laden's medical issues went undiagnosed… or misdiagnosed for decades. Ridiculously debilitating periods, several miscarriages… until the right doctor happened to be in attendance and recognized all the signs. As Boomer Women, we are past our baby-making years but this might be vital info for our daughters or granddaughters. We are, however, not past the age of being misdiagnosed, even ignored, as medical patients. Both Amanda and I are privileged, educated white women. Health equity is a subject (read passion) that has grown out of Amanda's personal experiences. Women of colour, gender-non-conforming people are at way higher risk of misdiagnosis or being ignored. We do get a little political – no apologies. Find Amanda at https://www.periodtopause.com/ Learn more about Amanda at https://boomwithabang.com/the-boomer-womans-podcast-amanda-laden/

Her mission is to help women and other individuals to use their V.O.I.C.E. to change a system that wasn't set up by or for them and to leverage the power of story to see the humanity in all of us. Amanda spent decades being undiagnosed with a disease called adenomyosis, a disease which caused immense chronic pain, cost her the opportunity to have children, and years of suffering. I've got a question which seems to be baffling all American society? Why is the healthcare system consistently still broken? It's a question we all seem to still be scratching our heads to come up with an answer to, probably because there isn't a logical and acceptable answer and I've got stats to back it up. According to Gallup - For the first time in Gallup's two-decade trend, less than half of Americans are complimentary about the quality of U.S. healthcare, with 48% rating it “excellent” or “good.” The slight majority now rate healthcare quality as subpar, including 31% saying it is “only fair” and 21% -- a new high -- calling it “poor.” These findings are from Gallup's annual Health and Healthcare survey. The latest update was conducted Nov. 9-Dec. 2, 2022. A key reason views of U.S. healthcare quality have been trending downward in recent years is that Republicans' positive ratings have been subdued since President Donald Trump left office. Currently, 56% of Republicans rate healthcare quality as excellent or good, whereas 69% felt this way in 2020 and 75% in 2019. Republicans' views of healthcare quality also dropped in 2014 after implementation of the Affordable Care Act before rebounding under Trump. Meanwhile, Democrats' positive ratings have been steady at a lower level (currently 44%). I talk a lot about the burnout of physicians, and while that is a topic that can not get enough coverage for us as physicians, there is another caveat that we need to be aware of - our presence with our patients and giving them the time and attention they need to avoid misdiagnosis or missed diagnoses. Amanda Laden shines some light on the perspective of a patient who lived with pain from an undiagnosed condition for years due to doctors who missed the signs and symptoms of a disease that progressed so far that it nearly cost her her life. The lack of attention of physicians to take the time to listen to their patients and make sure that no stone is left unturned can be attributed to burnout. The frequency at which physicians are required to see patients causes us to be distracted and our attention to be divided which can lead to us missing some pretty big issues with our patients. We have to take care of ourselves as physicians to ensure that we can pour back into our patients and give them the care and diagnoses that they deserve to avoid long-term suffering at the hands of an exhausted doctor. In some cases, it's not the physician that lacks empathy and attention, but the office staff that interacts with the patients on a regular basis. When we have people that are coming to us to help with major medical issues and they are relying on our medical expertise, our office staff needs to approach our patients with empathy and perspective to ensure that our patients feel heard and cared for. Listen in to this episode to hear Amanda share her story and how the lack of diagnoses impacted her. Check out her podcast and what she's doing to bring awareness to physicians about how missed diagnoses and missing links in women's health need to be brought to the forefront of medicine. “The system is not set up for either patients or doctors.” Amanda Laden In this episode: [01:42] Welcome to the Show, Amanda!
