Episode 62 The Tragic Toll of Conspiracy Theories: The Seth Rich Story A violent, unsolved murder of an up-and-coming young professional in our nation's capital. A grieving family in the Midwest. And conspiracy theories both ignited and inflamed by politics. Listen in as investigative journalist Andy Kroll returns to the podcast to dive into his book, “A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy.” Andy and host Matt Adams take us back to the 2016 election year to examine why and how conspiracy theories took flight after the death of Seth Rich. You'll hear how a family in mourning sought — and got — justice against a narrative of falsehoods and how the court system continues to hold the line to facts.
Episode 59 Enforcement Priorities of the Second Trump Administration: DOJ Focus While President Trump's first administration focused on reshaping the judiciary, he's indicated a priority of his second administration will be reshaping the federal justice system. In this episode, reporter Andy Kroll and host Matt Adams explore the commonalities among recent U.S. Attorney appointments and how these newly named individuals may impact the overall enforcement priorities of the Department of Justice. They discuss what makes this presidential term different — and what makes it the same — as well as how reductions in force and other staffing changes across multiple federal agencies align with the president's stated vision and agenda. An investigative journalist known for his in-depth reporting on the intersections of politics, money and power, Andy currently serves as a national reporter for ProPublica, where he covers justice and the rule of law, including the Justice Department, U.S. Attorneys and the courts.
On today’s show: ProPublica’s Andy Kroll examines how Trump’s cuts at the IRS could make it harder for the federal government to root out fraud. Dylan Baddour of Inside Climate News joins to explain a case at the Supreme Court pitting Texas against the federal government on nuclear-waste disposal. Leslie Patton, a consumer reporter at Bloomberg News, examines what happened to one company as the backlash to black-plastic kitchen utensils grew. Plus, the Supreme Court denies Trump’s request to cancel nearly $2 billion in foreign aid, D.C. officials will remove Black Lives Matter Plaza, and why scientists genetically engineered woolly mice. Today’s episode was hosted by Shumita Basu.

In a 5-4 ruling on Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's push to freeze nearly $2 billion in foreign aid payments for work that has already been completed. Georgetown Law professor Mary McCord joins us to explain what the decision means. Then, it's the height of tax season, but the Internal Revenue Service is down thousands of agents, thanks to recent cuts by billionaire Trump adviser Elon Musk. One team gutted by Musk's DOGE specialized in making sure the super-rich and big corporations paid their taxes. ProPublica's Andy Kroll tells us more. And, state lawmakers in Oklahoma are now trying to add some professionalism — via a licensing program — to storm chasing in an effort to keep the general public more aware of severe weather in their area. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Molly Redden, reporter covering national politics at ProPublica, and Andy Kroll, reporter covering voting, elections, & democracy at ProPublica, to discuss their piece of reporting entitled “Put Them in Trauma”: Inside a Key MAGA Leader's Plans for a New Trump Agenda. First, Sam runs through updates on the final six days to the US election, early voting numbers, RFK's ballot problems, Trump's threat to Police over mass deportations, the US economy, Israel's en masse slaughter of civilians in Gaza and Lebanon, and Elon Musk v. the NLRB, before briefly touching on the role of Kamala Harris' identity in voters' support of/aversion to her. Molly Redden and Andy Kroll then join, diving right into who Russell Vought is in the context of Trump's first administration (Director of the Office of Management and Budget), current campaign (policy director of the RNC platform committee), and the SUPPOSEDLY unrelated Project 2025 (co-author), before touching on the role he played in the evolution of the Trump team's knowledge of the administrative state, and – more importantly – how to dismantle it. Expanding on that latter element, Redden and Kroll parse through the first Trump administration's learning process in how to manage (and mismanage) the executive branch, forcing them to rely on career civil servants at the start who, annoyingly, cared about the work they were doing, before slowly pushing them out as Trump loyalists began to understand what they were doing, with a particular focus on the danger Trump's “Schedule F” poses to any remaining committed civil servants in the executive branch should he return to office. After tackling Russell Vought's outspoken support for the complete “traumatization” of these workers on their way out, Sam, Molly, and Andy look to the extensive plan Trump's team (and their Project 2025 buddies) have for a radical executive intervention beginning day 1 (should he become President), including relevant regulations and legal justifications, before they wrap up the interview by tackling what we can do (electorally and otherwise) to stop a second Trump Administration. And in the Fun Half: Sam reads Kowalski's reflections on a Nebraska Town Hall, JD Vance takes offense at people taking offense to being called “garbage” before going on to take offense to being called “garbage,” and Sandy from Ontario touches on Canada's recent elections. Derrick from Virginia objects to how MR has painted his campaign, Bruce from North Carolina on local feelings heading into the election, and Donald Trump discusses why we don't all have to get along. Hannity runs cover for Trump's fascist rally, Elon Musk continues to be a tiny sniveling weasel, and Rich from Missouri dives into the GOP's use of “ballot candy” to mislead and lure voters. Dave Rubin has some election theories, Charles from Virginia explores what an insurrection would look like without Trump in office, Jack from St. Louis on Missouri's judges, and Mike Johnson says the GOP has a healthcare plan. The MR Crew also watches Robbie Roadsteamer beautifully take the piss out of Steve Bannon and Hulk Hogan, plus, your calls and IMs! Project 2025 has become a surprising focal point of the U.S. presidential race. But who exactly is behind it, and why are they targeting trans rights? To help break down this radical plan for reshaping American life, Imara talks with two experts who have been tracking the policy and politics of Project 2025. First, she's joined by ProPublica investigative reporter Andy Kroll who explains what the Heritage Foundation is, how they're training a new generation of party loyalists, and why this could fundamentally alter the way our government works. Next, she discusses Project 2025's focus on undermining progress towards gender equity with Sharita Gruberg, the Vice President for Economic Justice at the National Partnership for Women & Families. And make sure to take a listen to season three of the Anti-Trans Hate Machine wherever you get your podcasts.Vote TransLash for Best LGBTQ+ Show: https://vote.signalaward.com/PublicVoting#/2024/shows/general/lgbtqVote TransLash for Best Individual Episode, LGBTQ+:https://vote.signalaward.com/PublicVoting#/2024/individual-episodes/general/lgbtqVote TransLash for Best Individual Episode, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: https://vote.signalaward.com/PublicVoting#/2024/individual-episodes/general/diversity-equity-inclusionFollow TransLash Media @translashmedia on TikTok, Instagram, Threads, X, and Facebook.Follow Imara Jones on X (@ImaraJones) and Instagram (@Imara_jones_)Follow our guests on social media!Alex del Rosario: Instagram (@transequalitynow @alexdelrosario1994)Andy Kroll: X (@AndyKroll)Sharita Gruberg: X (@NPWF), Instagram (@NPWF), and TikTok (@NPWF)TransLash Podcast is produced by Translash Media.Translash Team: Imara Jones, Oliver-Ash Kleine, Aubrey Calaway. Who Killed Seth Rich? If you guessed Hilary Clinton, you'd be wrong, but not alone. It's been said that we all love a good conspiracy story. In the midst, of the political convulsions that surrounded the 2016 Presidential Election, a young man by the name of Seth Rich was gunned down and killed on “W” street in Washington, D.C. He was presumably the victim of a botched robbery attempt. Seth had not been long laid to rest when the internet exploded with the claims that not the Russians, but Seth Rich, an entry-level employee of the DNC, was Julian Assange's source for Hilary Clinton's infamous emails, which were published by WikiLeaks. "A Death on W Street" is a gripping account of, madness, and political chicanery. It tells the story of an idealistic political staffer who became a tragic victim of the age of conspiracy, and how his family fought to defend his name against the likes of Sean Hannity, Alex Jones and others and expose the deceptions surrounding his death. My guest today is Andy Kroll, author of “A Death on W Street." *************************************************** WARNING: CONTAINS POLITICAL CONTENT!

On this week's episode of ‘The Katie Phang Show': Top Democrats are descending upon Chicago as the DNC kicks off on Monday. DNC Chair Jaime Harrison joins to preview what America can expect from the four-day convention. With speeches expected from Fmr. President Clinton, Fmr. President Obama, and President Biden, the Harris campaign is aiming to build upon their momentum. Ohio Congresswoman Joyce Beatty shares her take on this pivotal moment as one of VP Kamala Harris' closest allies. Plus, new ProPublica reporting is exposing 14 hours of Project 2025 “training videos” meant to coach prospective government employees on how to radically alter the federal government. Investigative reporter Andy Kroll talks through his detailed new reporting. All that and more on the ‘The Katie Phang Show.'
This week's agenda: The Second City becomes the news center of the nation for a week as Democrats gather on the left side of Lake Michigan for their national convention. While the Harris-Walz ticket continues to draw massive crowds at rallies, J.D. Vance comes to Michigan and again draws a crowd numbering in the dozens. The latest polling from the New York Times shows a turnaround in three critical states, with Kamala Harris now holding narrow leads in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Trump continues to campaign from home. His latest effort: a weirdo-with-weirdo two-hour glitch-and-lie filled online chat with X owner Elon Musk. A pro-Trump attorney facing multiple election-related criminal charges in Michigan has been barred from a separate 2020 election lawsuit because she shared confidential court documents with a local sheriff. Good economic news is continuing: inflation has dropped below 3%, wage increases continue to exceed inflation, and the Fed is looking to lower interest rates next month. The Trump-Vance ticket continues to disown the massively unpopular Project 2025 even as the evidence proves that it is, in fact, the Trump agenda if he's reelected. If reading the 900 pages isn't frightening enough, newly revealed training videos for Project 2025 acolytes are even more frightening. We are joined by the reporter who exposed the 14 hours of video: ProPublica's Andy Kroll. ProPublica has become the most respected investigative journalism organization in the nation, winning awards right-and-left for its groundbreaking work. ProPublica made national headlines exposing the multi-million-dollar gifts to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Now it's making headlines again, exposing 14 hours of previously secret training videos on Project 2025, a story uncovered by Andy Kroll. Andy was previously the Washington bureau chief for Rolling Stone. His reporting there about a series of cyberattacks on congressional campaigns helped lead to the indictment of a California political operative. Before that, he was a senior reporter at Mother Jones. In September, Kroll will publish his first book, “A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy,” a true-crime investigation about U.S. politics, viral conspiracy theories and one family's fight for truth. A new investigation by ProPublica has uncovered a shadowy non-profit organization that problematically, and probably illegally, is pushing a hyper conservative right wing agenda in this country that very specifically aims to center the church in all parts of society. The group describes its membership as a “private, confidential, invitation-only community of high-net-worth Christian families” with a minimum net worth of $25 million. The organization is called Ziklag, which itself is a biblical reference. Our guest is Andy Kroll, a reporter for ProPublica covering voting, elections and other democracy issues. He is one of the reporters on this shocking story, which is titled, “Inside Ziklag, the Secret Organization of Wealthy Christians Trying to Sway the Election and Change the Country.” Read the story here: https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-ziklag-secret-christian-charity-2024-election — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Shadowy Mega-Rich Christian Supremacist Organization Wants to Politically Define US Future w/ Andy Kroll appeared first on KPFA.

ProPublica reporter Andy Kroll just went deep inside the epicenter of MAGA insanity, and found some unsettling things. Welcome to Episode 88 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! On this week's show, Pat has some fun at the expense of the big oil and land developer-backed group calling itself "Citizens For Local Choice," which announced its hopes of putting a repeal of a renewable energy siting law on this November's ballot FAILED to garner enough signatures! This is a vital victory for our economy, our environment, and our farmers! Lansing Democrats passed a clean energy and jobs act in 2024, and part of that law gave farmers the freedom to allow their land to be used for large wind and solar farm projects. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the law so that extreme local governments could no longer and their own block farmers from participating in joining in these large renewable energy projects. Pat explains why opponents wanted to get this repeal on this year's ballot, and why this is such a blow to their efforts. In the second segment, Andy Kroll from ProPublica joins the show to discuss an article he wrote on the civil war happening inside the Michigan Republican Party. Mr. Kroll is a native Michigander, and wrote about the battle between the longtime establishment Republicans vs. the growing insurgent "America First" faction of the party. And while the establishment may have prevailed for now, this fight continues, and it could be to the detriment of not just for Republicans, but for Donald Trump as well. Mr. Kroll also has a new book titled, "A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy." In the "Last Call" Pat examines Michigan Democratic Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin's first campaign ad for the state's U.S. Senate seat, which is being vacated by retiring Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow. To say Pat's less than enthused with this ad is quite the understatement. Law and Crime Author series, author Kevin Flynn Rock Creek a novel. #RockCreek #KevinFlynn#murdermystery Part murder mystery, part political thriller, Rock Creek is an epic work of historical fiction set in Washington, D.C. It's the most important city in the world in 1952, but at its heart it's still a small Southern town deeply divided along race and class boundaries. With big themes, bigger characters, and enduring spirit, Rock Creek expertly weaves an evocative tale in small, ineffable moments, telling the story of what happens to those who try to cross D.C.'s dividing lines. Emily Rose is a beautiful Capitol Hill staffer with a tragic past, rooted in the Holocaust, that she can never quite seem to escape. She's dumped and abandoned in Rock Creek Park, a lush urban wilderness with its own haunted history. Shane Kinnock is a homicide detective at the lowest point of his life and career, still shell-shocked from the war and scarred by loss. He sees the prospect of redemption in the mystery of Emily's death, but he'll find that her story draws him close to insanity. Race and intolerance, injustice and protest, publishing and politics, sex and ambition, gambling and government: Rock Creek brings to life a time and place that are so distant, yet still seem so close. In advance of its 2024 publication, Rock Creek has been praised by James Grady, author of Six Days of the Condor, David Swinson, author of The Second Girl, and Andy Kroll, author of A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy.

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Andy Kroll, reporter at ProPublica, to discuss his recent reporting on Leonard Leo and the new Supreme Court judicial ethics code. Then, they're joined by actor Shaan Sharma, member of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, to discuss the tentative agreement reached between the union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's raid of Al-Shifa hospital, the pro- and anti-war movements regarding Israel, a government shutdown, the UAW's contract, Starbucks' labor action, New York politics, and Paul Pelosi's attacker, also checking in on the large pro-war rally in D.C. that played host to Van Jones, myriad US Congresspeople, and noted antisemitic Pastor John Hagee. Andy Kroll then joins, first running through some quick background on Leonard Leo, and how he came to completely reshape the Federalist Society into perhaps the most influential legal institution in US politics. Kroll begins with the 1992 Conservative Supreme Court affirming Roe v. Wade in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which ignited an organized spark in the Republican party and saw the founding of the Federalist Society some nine years later, serving to funnel conservative lawyers into judgeships, state offices, and the Supreme Court – provided they completely adhere to the society's strict blueprint for jurisprudence. After parsing through the central strategies of the Society (centered around networking), and how the Democrats were completely blindsided by the Society's rise to judicial dominance in the 21st Century, Kroll, Sam, and Emma dive into Leonard Leo's role as Supreme Court Den Mother, doting on the conservative justices to keep them happy and in line with the Society, as has come to light recently. Wrapping up, they look to the weak response from the Senate Judicial Committee to the myriad SCOTUS corruption charges, and whether the Court's new ethics code will completely sweep this story under the rug. Shaan Sharma then walks Sam and Emma through the structure of SAG-AFTRA's national board, and his role in the organization, before touching on the central elements of the negotiation – namely bringing wages into line with cost-of-living, getting actors residuals from streaming, and appropriate AI protections. Next, Sharma explores where he felt the contract proposal falls short, including health care, self-tape and audition protections, and wage growth, before he, Sam, and Emma wrap up the interview with an assessment of the AI policy, the SAG-AFTRA leadership, and the pressures that brought the end of the strike. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Peter Beinart and Michael A. Cohen's conversation on the 9/11 comparison with Israel's assault on Gaza, watch the families of Israeli hostages march from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in protest of Netanyahu's war in Gaza, and parse through the ongoing Daily Wire cat fight between Ben Shapiro and Candace Owens. Wrapping up, the MR Crew parses through the continuing drama surrounding Kevin McCarthy, as audio is released of his harrowing assault on Tim Burchett and Newsmax nearly leaks allegations against him from Nancy Mace, plus, your IMs! Isn't there something odd about these social conservative luminaries loving the Dead, such avatars of 1960s psychedelia, libertinism, and hippie counterculture? Or else, have we misunderstood something essential about the band — their Americana roots, their individualist ethos, their reverence for transcendent experiences — which makes them particularly suitable to conservative sensibilities? And also why do we all love them so much — this band that tests our patience, produces largely forgettable studio records, and often sounds, in concert, as if they're playing their own songs for the first time? The mind reels...Strap in for a long, strange, improvisational trip to the heart of these bewildering matters.Further Reading:Sophie Haigney, "Those of Us Who Love the Dead," Gawker, Dec 3, 2021.— "The Final Dead Shows: Part One," The Paris Review, Jul 17, 2023.— "The Final Dead Shows: Part Two," The Paris Review, July 18, 2023.— "The Final Dead Shows: Part Three," The Paris Review, Jul 19, 2023.Ann Coulter, "I'm A Grateful Dead Fan For Life," Billboard, Jun 24, 2016.Noah Eckstein, "'Wave That Flag': Meet the Deadheads Who Stump for Trump," Variety, Nov 2, 2020.Zachary D. Andy Kroll, author and ProPublica journalist, joins Offline to discuss the one thing Fox News fears: lawsuits. Kroll's new book, A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy, recounts how conspiracists co-opted a young man's tragic death, the role of Fox News in perpetuating those lies, and how the Rich family fought back and won. In the early hours of July 10, 2016, gunshots rang out and a young man lay fatally wounded on a quiet Washington, DC, street. But who killed Seth Rich? When he was buried in his hometown, his rabbi declared: “There are no answers for a young man gunned down in the prime of his life.” The rabbi was wrong. There were in fact many answers, way too many.In the absence of an arrest, a howling mob filled the void. Wild speculation and fantastical theories surfaced on social media and gained traction thanks to a high-level cast of provocateurs. But it wasn't until Fox News took the rumors from the fringes to the mainstream that Seth Rich's life and death grew into something altogether unexpected—one of the foundational conspiracy theories of modern times.A Death on W Street unravels this gripping saga of murder, madness, and political chicanery, one that would ensnare Hillary Clinton and Steve Bannon, a popular pizzeria in northwest DC and the most powerful voices in American media. It's the story of an idealistic twenty-seven-year-old political staffer who became a tragic victim of the culture wars, until his family decided that they had no choice but to defend his name and put an end to the cruel deceptions that surrounded his death. In the summer of 2016, Seth Rich, a young employee of the Democratic National Committee, was murdered in Washington, D.C. His death became fertile ground for conspiracy theories peddled by some Americans and certain foreign intelligence services. Andy Kroll gives us the truth about what happened that night and what those conspiracy theories have cost us. Kroll is an investigative journalist for ProPublica. A Michigan native, Kroll got his start at Mother Jones. While he was working there, he exposed a prominent law office that was profiting off of foreclosures and reported several stories on Donald Trump, which helped prompt multiple congressional investigations. In 2018, he reported on a series of cyber attacks on California's elections for Rolling Stone, which led to a political operative's indictment. Throughout his career, Kroll has received many accolades. While at Mother Jones, the magazine, which included his work, won the 2013 Izzy Award and 2010 National Magazine Award for general excellence. Mother Jones' “Climate Countdown” package, to which Kroll was a contributor, won the James Aronson award for social justice journalism. He also was named as an outstanding emerging journalist by The Society of Professional Journalists-NorCal in 2012. Kroll's newest project is his book, “A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy,” which explores Rich's life, death, and the conspiracy theories that followed his murder.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Andy Kroll is an investigative reporter for ProPublica. His new book is A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy. “I think a book has ruined me for writing hot takes and spicy Twitter dunks and all of these other one- and two-dimensional bits of ephemera. I wasn't really a big fan of it in the first place, but I can't do it anymore. A book forces you to look at the world in a much more fine grained, humane, empathetic way, and there's no going back from that.” Show notes: @AndyKroll andy-kroll.com Kroll on Longform Kroll's ProPublica archive Kroll's Rolling Stone archive 01:00 A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy (PublicAffairs • 2022) 21:00 "Ted Cruz's Secret Weapon to Win the Right" (National Journal • Jun 2015) 22:00 "Ted Cruz's Howitzer" (New Republic • Jan 2016) 22:00 "The Staying Power of Nancy Pelosi" (The Atlantic • Sep 2015) 22:00 "The Last Days of Jerry Brown" (California Sunday Magazine • Mar 2018) 31:00 "Seth Rich, Slain DNC Staffer, Had Contact with WikiLeaks, Say Multiple Sources" (Malia Zimmerman • Fox News • May 2017) 40:00 Longform Podcast #46: Nicholas Schmidle (Jun 2013) Learn more about your ad choices. Lies sell better than ever, according to Andy Kroll, who debunks one of the most virulent conspiracies of recent times […]
Seth Rich was a young DNC staffer in Washington, DC who was tragically murdered early one morning in 2016. Our WITHpod guest this week described him as smart, ambitious, telegenic and someone who might run a presidential campaign someday. In the absence of an arrest, questions remain about who killed Rich. Unfounded theories about the motives for his murder continue to circulate on social media, including ones that enmeshed the Clintons and other high-profile figures. The search for answers, and this age of widespread disinformation, is the subject of “A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy,” written by ProPublica reporter Andy Kroll. The true-crime story unravels this saga of murder, deceptions about what happened, and the role of conspiracy mongers in disparaging Rich's memory. Kroll, who actually knew Rich, joins WITHpod to discuss Rich's life, death and what happened to his story once it got into the hands of numerous bad actors.
There is a dangerous digital forever war of far-right conspiracy theories, but where did it start and what is it? Investigative reporter for ProPublica, Andy Kroll joins Thom to discuss far-right conspiracy theories. Also recently a very reasonable sounding fellow called into the show and said, essentially, “I voted twice for Trump and would again. Why do you think I'm a threat to America?” We ended up debating tax policy and I never did fully answer his question. The bottom line is that if you're supporting this long (and incomplete) list of horribles, then you are a threat to America.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Barry Seid (pronounced “side”) and Leonard Leo are two names you likely have never heard of but is worth your time becoming familiar with. Mr. Seid was the former CEO of Tripp Lite, an electrical products manufacturer before donating a record $1.65 billion to a new conservative nonprofit led by Federalist Society co-chairman Leonard Leo. Mr. Leo was an integral part in shaping the conservative courts during the Trump administration, with over 200 Federalist Society appointees, and played a huge role in the Supreme Court's super majority. This week we chat with Andy Kroll (investigative journalist with ProPublica) who broke this story, and we have him break down what all of this means for the courts in America. Here's the article we referenced: https://www.propublica.org/article/dark-money-leonard-leo-barre-seidGuest Bio:Andy Kroll is a reporter for ProPublica covering voting, elections and other democracy issues. He was previously the Washington bureau chief for Rolling Stone. His reporting there about a series of cyberattacks on congressional campaigns helped lead to the indictment of a California political operative. Before that, he was a senior reporter at Mother Jones, where his work on self-dealing during the Trump presidency sparked multiple congressional investigations. Earlier in his career, his investigation of a powerful law firm that profited from pushing borrowers out of their homes helped shut down the foreclosure mill and spurred Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to cut ties with similar foreclosure law firms across the country. In September, Kroll will publish his first book, “A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy,” a true-crime investigation about U.S. politics, viral conspiracy theories and one family's fight for truth.Support the show

Corporate influence is no stranger to politics, but many businesses have found more support for their priorities in the Trump administration. Up until now, one influential group has flown under the radar, the Trump Leadership Council. A recent report from Rolling Stone names members of the group. The Council dates back to the summer before the 2016 election. Though it went unnoticed at the time, the group's members consist of powerful business leaders from many of the nation's biggest industries who have pushed for policies such as a tougher trade stance with China and a rollback of environmental protections at the EPA. This week on Money Talking, Charlie Herman talks to Andy Kroll, DC bureau chief for Rolling Stone, about his story "The Shadow Cabinet: How a Group of Powerful Business Leaders Drove Trump’s Agenda."

This week we hear Ian Millhiser, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, debate "Citizens United" with Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation. The Hauenstein Center hosted the debate in 2015; the issues the debate addresses are still relevant today. Here’s a quick brush up: In "Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission," the Supreme Court decided that the First Amendment prohibits the government from restricting independent expenditures made by corporations and labor unions in elections. Those in favor of the decision say it’s a victory for political speech in this country; opponents say it gives corporations and the rich unlimited power over the democratic process. On December 7th, just a day ago, Andy Kroll suggested in Mother Jones that Citizens United has a lot to do with this tax bill the GOP has gotten through Congress. Kroll claims that the very political culture which supports and provides foundation for the Citizens United decision also justifies what he takes to be the worst aspects of this tax bill. Kroll writes “When I say that Citizens United explains the GOP’s tax-bill frenzy, I really mean the big-money political climate that Citizens United helped create and, broadly speaking, embodies.”
