Jonathan Howard and Wendy Orent analyze the confirmation of Jay Bhattacharya to the NIH, lamenting the Senate's failure to scrutinize his history of COVID misinformation. They discuss RFK Jr.'s unexpected pro-vaccine article in response to the Texas measles outbreak, highlighting how real-world responsibility has forced him into an awkward position. Yet, despite acknowledging the measles vaccine's effectiveness, Kennedy continues to pander to his anti-vaccine base by avoiding direct recommendations. Meanwhile, the same misinformation tactics used to downplay COVID—claiming alternative causes of death, accusing doctors of malpractice, and insisting on "natural immunity"—are now being repurposed to minimize measles. As public health agencies face political interference, the duo warns that science is under siege, and the consequences will be dire. Send us a textPeople have always doubted science. In the 17th century, Galileo was sentenced to house arrest by the Catholic Church for reporting his observations that the sun is at the center of the solar system and that the other planets, including Earth, orbit it. In 1925, the U.S. state of Tennessee banned the teaching of evolution and when a high school teacher named John Scopes agreed to challenge the law, the Scopes “monkey” trial resulted. People did not like to think that they descended from monkeys – although that's not quite what the science of evolution shows. Now, the United States and much of the world seems to have regressed into another period when science is denied. This time, much of it centers around vaccines, although there is animosity toward many other public health measures. Climate science is likewise still under attack, decades after the scientific expert community settled the question of whether people's activities are changing the planet's climate. One of the scientists fighting back is Dr. Peter Hotez. Long a champion of fighting neglected tropical diseases such as Chagas disease and leishmaniasis, Hotez has evolved into an advocate for vaccination in general and for inexpensive, freely available vaccines in particular. He wrote a book, Vaccines Did Not Cause Rachel's Autism, that explains the disproven notion that vaccination might cause autism – using his own daughter's case history as an illustration. His latest book, The Deadly Rise of Anti-Science, looks at the history of attacks on science, the political and commercial motives of many of the attacks, and the often fatal results. The attacks have gotten very personal for Hotez, and they've worsened under the new Trump Administration in the United States. Now Hotez, who is Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, has become one of the most recognizable public faces in the fight to defend science. In this episode of One World, One Health, Hotez describes how he never expected to be cast as a “cartoon villain” when what he mostly wanted to do was help underprivileged people escape disease.SS

Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s confirmation as US health secretary made official one of President Donald Trump’s most controversial appointments. Kennedy’s confirmation came off the back of fiery questions from both Democrats and Republicans on his record on vaccines. Under oath, Kennedy denied he was against vaccinations, but watching closely was investigative journalist Brian Deer, who says Kennedy is beyond a vaccine sceptic – he’s “the most prominent anti-vaccine campaigner in the whole world”. Today, journalist Brian Deer on Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s real beliefs, and the impact his campaigning had on a deadly measles outbreak in the Pacific. The alleged link between vaccines and autism was first published in 1998, in a since-retracted study in medical journal The Lancet. The claim has been repeatedly disproven: there is no evidence that vaccines and autism are related. But by the mid-2000s, the myth was out there, and its power was growing, fueled by distrust of government, misinformation, and high-profile boosters like Jim Carrey and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. In this episode: the roots of the modern anti-vaccine movement, and of the fears that still fuel it – from a botched polio vaccine, to the discredited autism study, to today.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

The renowned expert on vaccine confidence, Dr. Heidi Larson, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, explains why there has been a precipitous escalation in the past four years, especially among 18-24 year-olds, of vaccine skepticism and resistance. During Covid-19, “everybody got vaccinated,” everyone was exposed to the “digital swarm,” the “wildfire” on social media of mis- and dis-information regarding vaccines. Antivaccine groups amalgamated and rose in power. Public health officials were hesitant to compete on social media. Young parents were unhappy with public health sources of information and looked elsewhere. RFK Jr., his Children's Health Defense, and the affiliated Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN), have had “massive, massive influence” as amplifiers of doubt and fear of vaccines. What to do? There is an urgent need to engage young leaders, increase public health communications budgets and change their practices and outlook, mobilize local communities, and create new communications partnerships. It requires a “huge effort.”

Solving science denial is a priority for you as well? Alan McGowan, selected as 2019's Top Science and Technical Expert by the International Association of Top Professionals, also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who's Who that same year. Now a Lecturer at The New School, he served first as chair of the Science, Technology, and Society Program (now called the Interdisciplinary Science Program) then as chair of the Environmental Studies Program. After graduating Yale University with an engineering degree, and a two-year stint at American Electric Power, a public utility, Mr. McGowan left to pursue graduate work in physics, then taught science and mathematics at private schools for ten years, winning the Teacher Recognition Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers in 1968. Following that, after serving for five years as Scientific Administrator of the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems, an interdisciplinary environmental research, and training program at Washington University in St. Louis, he became president of the Scientists' Institute for Public Information (SIPI), which under his leadership became a major bridge between the scientific and journalist communities. In episode 471 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Alan decided to go to Yale, what we can do to solve science denial, initiatives that we can take to reduce climate change, why nuclear power is part of our energy transition, why we are hearing so much scientific racism in this political election, what is the connection between mental health and social media usage, whether we should control and/or regulate Artificial Intelligence, and why college students should know who Franz Boas is. I. Steve Kirsch is an inventor and businessman most famous for developing the optical mouse. More recently, he's become an anti-COVID-vaccine activist. He has many different arguments on his Substack, of which one especially caught my eye: He got Pollfish, a reputable pollster, to ask questions about people's COVID experiences, including whether they thought any family members had died from COVID or from COVID vaccines. Results here: 7.5% of people said a household member had died of COVID 8.5% of people said a household member had died from the vaccine. All other statistics were normal and confirmed that this was a fair sample of the population. In particular, about 75% were vaccinated (suggesting that they weren't just polling hardcore anti-vaxxers). https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/failure-to-replicate-anti-vaccine

A recent court-ordered release of documents from Pfizer unveiled a study approved on April 20, 2021, documenting the company's experimental product causing spontaneous abortions, premature births, and transmission of product through lactation. The very next day - April 21 - a New England Journal of Medicine study found the exact same thing in even higher rates. On April 23, 2021, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky held a press conference and told pregnant women to get the very product causing these problems. Was it negligence or something else? Perhaps 'safe and effective' is more than a marketing ploy and political tool, also used for elections. Maybe it means the product is safe for the company and effective at generating profit while sterilizing recipients. A few months later when it became overly obvious this was the case, the CDC, along with major universities and news outlets, began saying that stillbirths and other birth issues were a result of viral particles entering the placenta and terminating the pregnancy. An accidental form of 'healthcare' either way.
