What you're hearing (if you're listening, rather than reading this) are the sounds of me unboxing a new keyboard — specifically, an Apple A1048, commonly known as simply the Apple Keyboard. What makes this keyboard especially interesting to me is the period of time in my life that it reminds me of — that and the fact that this particular keyboard has been sitting unopened and unused in a box in central California since 2003. I found it on shopgoodwill.com, where it was listed in “new or gently used” condition. When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see that not only was it in the original box — which wasn't mentioned in the description — but it was also in the original unopened plastic packaging. The last “new” thing I bought on Goodwill was a Starbucks Barista espresso machine to replace my Saeco Via Venezia that finally gave up the ghost after more than 19 years of daily service and literally thousands of shots of espresso. You've heard the complaints if you read tech blogs, the latest iteration of the MacBook keyboard is regarded as one of the most un-ergonomic, flawed keyboard designs that has ever been put in a laptop. Überbleibsel Browser Setup Es gibt ein paar Nachträge zur letzten Episode Vimium, eine Mischung aus LaunchBar und Shortcat - Keyboard productivity app for Mac OS X… aber halt NUR für den Browser. An wahnsinnige mit über 30 offenen Tabs: How to Enable Tab Discarding in Chrome for Improved Memory Use. Trotzdem ist es natürlich besser es erst gar nicht soweit kommen zu lassen, z.B. mit OneTap. Markdown Browser Helium Firefox iOS AppleTV Hands-On In der letzten Sendung konnten wir nur spekulieren und die Erfahrungen teilen, die andere mit dem neuen AppleTV gemacht haben. Jetzt haben Patrick und Sven aber selbst einen in der Hand und an der Klotze. Sven kann die Aufregung um den fehlenden Keyboard-Support nicht verstehen, die Eingabe der iTunes und iCloud Kontodetails ist mit der Fernbedienung kein ausgesprochenes Vergnügen, aber auch nicht so katastrophal. Einmal eingegeben sollte man dringend unter Einstellungen > Konten > iTunes und App Store > Passwort Einstellungen in jedem Fall die Notwendigkeit für Passworteingaben bei kostenpflichtigen und kostenfreien Downloads abstellen. Beim iDownloadBlog gibt es eine kurze Anleitung dazu. Patrick hingegen verzweifelt an der Fernbedienung und bangt, dass die Remote App nun gar nicht upgedatet wird, wie es Jason Snell gehört haben will. Neben den hauseigenen Passwörtern von Apple, gesellen sich zur Eingabefolter täglich neue Apps dazu. Hier rächt sich definitiv jedes obskure 50-Zeichen-Passwort. Was bei Sven nicht geklappt hat ist die “magische” Übernahme von Netzwerkeinstellungen und -password vom iPhone, obwohl dieses mit eingeschaltetem Bluetooth nahe am AppleTV lag. Whatever… wenigstens Patrick hatte da keine Probleme. Da neue Interface ist super und extra slick. Schön auch das Sven’s Logitech Universalfernbedienung, die bereits auf die ältere AppleTV Version geeicht war, direkt funktioniert. Natürlich nicht für Spiele — und von denen gibt es einige coole im AppleTV AppStore — da muss die Touch-Remote ran. Bei manchen Spielen ist die allerdings sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig. Durchaus nachvollziehbar, dass viele den Kauf eines extra Controllers in Betracht ziehen. Beide Piloten haben als erstes Spiel übrigens Does Not Commute gekauft. Lobenswert ist, dass das Preisniveau für Apps und Spiele auf dem AppleTV gefühlt höher ist als beim iOS Pendant — hoch lebe die glorreiche Zukunft der Indie-Entwickler-Szene. In Sachen Leistungsfähigkeit liegt es locker über dem MacBook und den MacBook Airs. Es scheint also langsam Wirklichkeit zu werden, dass man sein Laptop gegen ein hybrides Tablet eintauschen kann. Würde vielleicht der eine oder andere aus der Pilotenkanzel durchaus in Erwägung ziehen. Die ersten Reviews sind allerdings sehr gemischt. Walt Mossberg ist mit dem iPad Pro nicht warm geworden während Federico Vittici erwartungsgemäß aus dem Häuschen ist (Achtung, plant 30 Minuten ein um sein Review zu lesen – alternativ die passende Folge von “Connected” hören). Einer der relevanten Reviews kommt von John Gruber, der das Potential des iPod Pro als Laptopersatz sieht, allerdings ein paar massive Einschränkungen beim Keyboard-Support darlegt, die zumindest Sven erstmal vor dem Kauf zurückschrecken lässt. Zum Glück nichts, was Apple nicht in einem der nächsten iOS Updates beheben könnte. FN+Eject ist dann ein normales auswerfen des CD-Schachts. Ctrl-Backtick Beispiel von Patrick: So sieht die Google Chrome Palette aus. Shifts to Parentheses hat Patrick von Steve Losh übernommen. Wem das zu viel Einschränkung auf einmal ist, der kann dieses Verhalten auch auf spezifische Apps begrenzen. Patrick nutzt es nur für den Browser, weil es dort ein schwerer Schicksalsschlag ist, wenn beim Neustart alle Tabs erst einmal geladen werden müssen. Auf GitHub (oder eurem Mac in den tiefen der Karabiner Installation) findet ihr alle Standardkonfigurationen, so auch die des Launcher Modes. Diese erleichtern es einem Anpassungen vorzunehmen. Konvertieren auf der Kommandozeile Ein Hoch auf afconvert, ffmpeg, textutil und pandoc stimmt Andreas an. Völlig zurecht, den afconvert und textutil sind schon bei den Bordmittel auf eurem Mac mit dabei. Das eine kümmert sich darum die typischen Apple Audioformate zu konvertieren, z.B. afconvert -f m4af -d alac Sven.aifc -o Sven.m4a und das andere kann eine breite Palette von Textformaten konvertieren. Wer öfters mal nach Powerhausen fährt in Sachen Audio/Video ist jedoch mit dem Tausendsassa ffmpeg gut bedient. Die Schwergewicht-Keyboard-Heber unter euch dürfen pandoc nutzen um das gleiche Wunderwerk mit Text zu vollbringen. pandoc kann beispielsweise auch das ePub-Format generieren.
