In this interview I'm joined by Taimur Malik to hear about the journey that brought him to founding Drawdown Farm in Pakistan, and the work they're doing there to produce foods regeneratively despite the challenges of desert soils and an arid climate.Taimur's background is not in farming. His move to develop regenerative agriculture in Pakistan is his response to having his eyes opened to the mix of crises surrounding him in the world; from climate to biodiversity loss, and even the roots of civil war.After much dedicated research the conclusion that he reached was that our most impactful solution is regenerative agriculture.I feel hugely inspired by the work that has been done here - not only in the successful regeneration of soils and cultivation of crops (including bananas which were thought impossible to grow in the Thal Desert); all of which you'll hear about towards the latter half of the discussion.But also by the range of research and influences that have guided Taimur in his learning, it's an incredibly varied set of wisdom that's been brought together and somehow provided clarity and focus rather than conflicting ideas.What a wonderful place we're in as a world to have so much information available to us, and I hope you'll feel as uplifted and motivated as I do by this story that demonstrates quite clearly that we have the knowledge we need to regenerate!And with the right approach, using many tools side by side Taimur concludes that a transition to regenerative agriculture can actually be really quick!He's very articulate at walking you through his journey so you'll hear very little from me with the questioning through this one. It was at a disused gym in lower Manhattan and managed to evade the notice of the authorities til the rapid approach of Sunday afternoon. Worst investment everIn 2012, Taimur's friend—a Wall Street success story—who ran a hedge fund was pivoting to geopolitical bets. The idea was to invest in stocks in countries just recovering from war. Taimur was impressed by his success in the 2000s and had a lot of respect for him. So he started following the setting up of this fund. The fund's first investment idea was Iraq. The country had had 10 years of massive conflict. But after a decade of death and destruction, the country was coming together, and there was some peace in place. There was huge potential for the US Iraqi stock market to make an earnings growth of about 40% a year. This was the mother of all bull markets to latch on to. Taimur had little understanding of the institutional nature of the Iraqi capital market. Still, he trusted his friend, who had made trips around Baghdad with US Marines and talked to entrepreneurs and the people who were to set up and run the new Iraqi stock exchange. It all seemed very good. The fund launched in 2012, and Taimur invested in it. By the end of 2013, things were going really well, and the value of the investment was growing steadily. Then the insurgency began, and the following years got terrible in terms of security, as well as deep disappointment in the Iraqi government's ability to channel oil resources to support Iraq's economic rejuvenation. In 2016, Taimur's friend called him from New York and informed him that he would shut the fund down. He said he'd pay Taimur 50% of his investment in that fund. Lessons learnedDon't get swayed by greed and the potential upside, and forget about the downsides. Be careful when investing with friends. You don't have to reach for the stars and be super greedy when investing. Andrew's takeawaysJust because something sounds cool doesn't mean it's gonna be cool. No matter how exciting an investment opportunity is, don't get too excited and forget to analyze the risks. Actionable adviceGetting into an illiquid investment is a bad idea for the average investor. Investing in liquid things is far more preferable. Taimur Rahman (Urdu/Punjabi: تیمور رحمان) is a Pakistani political activist who is the Secretary-General of the Mazdoor Kisan Party (MKP). He is also an academic and musician. He is the lead guitarist and spokesperson for the progressive music band Laal. He teaches political science at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). He has been outspoken in his criticism of capitalist exploitation and religious fundamentalism. He is the author of the book The Class Structure of Pakistan published by Oxford University Press. The Garden of Heaven, published by Speaking Tiger Books in October 2021, covers a period of two hundred years between two massive attacks on Dilli— one by Muhammed of Ghōr in 1192 and second by Taimur in 1398.
