Haas has launched the Michaels Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Business to empower new leaders to create the economic and social transition to a climate-resilient, low-carbon, and equitable future. The Michaels Certificate in Sustainable Business will equip aspiring leaders to evaluate operational and strategic decisions using a sustainability lens.In this episode, we'll hear from Kat Baird, the Associate Director of Sustainability at UC Berkeley Haas School of Business who will break down the Michaels Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Business for us. We get into why Haas decided to launch this certificate, what Michaels Certificate aims to achieve, and the basic requirements. Then we move to focus on one of the eligible electives in the Michaels Certificate: Business, Labor, and Global Supply Chains, with Sanchita B. Saxena. She teaches that class and is the Executive Director at the Institute for South Asia Studies at UC Berkeley. Sanchita will tell us more about this elective, three top takeaways that she wants students to walk away with after taking it, her background in the garment industry and what parts of that she brings to her class, and the role of business schools in sustainability. Episode Quotes:Why start the Michaels Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Business?: Kat[00:03:27] - We want to make sure that whatever we're doing, that every student who comes to Haas at minimum leaves with a basic understanding of how climate change, social and environmental sustainability, and environmental justice are a key part of being a business leader today. So that's why we're really working as broadly as we can to demonstrate and to integrate the fact that sustainability applies across all areas of business: Marketing, finance and investment, human resources, leadership. A glimpse into some of the curriculum: Kat[00:17:09] - As an elective, you could take Corporate Sustainability: Measuring and Reporting so that in the future, you would know how to share this information with your company or with your board. And then to finish it, you can have a hands-on learning experience where you take Clean Tech to Market to really work with renewable energy startups and create industry partnerships in the startup and in the energy industry for you as you move forward in your career.A bit on Sanchita's class Business, Labor, and Global Supply Chains: Sanchita[00:33:26] - We look at examples of different initiatives, but we also look at the limitations and why they are not necessarily as effective as we would expect. And then we go into looking at other factors that may be important when analyzing labor abuses or trying to rectify labor abuses, that go beyond private sector monitoring, and we look at the role of technology. As we close International Women's Month, this episode discusses the economic challenges and opportunities facing women all over the world. The economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic displaced millions of women from the global labour force and unraveled several decades of progress in closing economic gender gaps. Governments around the world will need to prioritize gender-based policymaking in the years ahead in order to regain this lost ground and achieve true gender equality. This episode takes a look at key elements of gender-based economic policymaking alongside two experts in the field, Dr. Sarah Kaplan and Sanchita Mitra. Our hosts, Ujunwa Ojemeni and Swathi Ramprasad interview these distinguished experts to get their perspectives on the main barriers to women's economic empowerment in both developed and developing countries. Our guests also provide an overview of some of the policies that governments can implement to help dismantle these barriers. Dr. Sarah Kaplan is a Distinguished University Professor and the Director of the Insitute for Gender and the Economy at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management. Her interview focuses on women working in the formal sectors of the global economy. She also discusses key gender policy themes like the wage gap, childcare, pay transparency, and feminist economic recovery policy. Sanchita Mitra is the National Coordinator at SEWA Bharat. SEWA Bharat is a federation of women-led institutions providing economic and social support to women in the informal sector in India. Sanchita speaks with Swathi about the unique situation of women who work in informal sectors of the economy, and how SEWA has worked with its members to improve their access to government programs. She discusses the following topics: gender-based violence and safety, financial inclusion, community organizing, and advocacy. This episode is hosted by Ujunwa Ojemeni and Swathi Ramprasad; produced by Grace Miner; and researched by Laeticia Kamel and Srinithya Nagarajan. The lecture was given by Swami Tattwamayananda on September 11, 2020.-5th chapter: verses 23, 24, 25, 26-23rd verse: “A person who can conquer the temptations of lust and anger, while doing his everyday duties, and before leaving this body – such a person is established in Yoga and is happy.”-24th verse: “That spiritual seeker, whose happiness is within, who is relaxed within, whose light is within, he alone is a Yogi, and that Yogi attains happiness from his mergence with Brahman.”-The real source of happiness is always within, in the Atman – not external. For example, we may think that good chocolate is a source of happiness. But eating the same chocolate may not give the same happiness if the tongue has an inflammation, or the mind is disturbed.-When we realize that we are in reality the Atman, we experience the whole existence as existing within, and feel complete identity with it. Then we feel happiness within (Antah-sukha), we rejoice, and we feel illumined.-King Janaka asked Sage Yajnavalkya: “Endowed with what light does a person live in this world?” The first answer was sunlight. As each option provided in previous answers was eliminated, subsequent answers were moonlight, agni, and sound. When all four of these options were eliminated, the final answer was Atma-Jyoti, which is in all of us and that is self-revealing. It is the light of all lights - that enables all other lights, such as sunlight, moonlight, agni to function.-When a person identifies with this light, he experiences spiritual freedom, happiness within, and illumined within. Such a person sees Brahman as non-distinct from himself (Brahma-Bhoota). Such a person is called a Yogi and attains Brahma-Nirvanam.-25th verse: “Such a Yogi – all his imperfections are gone, and his doubts are dispelled. He has achieved perfect control over his mind and senses. Absorbed in Brahman, he works for the welfare of the whole creation (Sarva-bhoota-hite-ratah).”-For the Yogi, who has reached spiritual freedom, all sanchita karmas are destroyed. Prarabdha karma are accumulated karmas that have already started unfolding. Sanchita karmas are accumulated karmas that are not yet manifesting.-Unlike a beginner, who has to fight with his lower self, a Yogi who has attained spiritual freedom, has natural, effortless control over his mind and senses. His intellect, emotions and will are sublimated to a spiritual ideal.-Such a Yogi, who experiences the highest happiness, has an instinctive eagerness to give that happiness to others. Whatever he does is for the welfare of others (Sarva-bhoota-hite-ratah).-26th verse: “Those self-realized people who are free from lust and anger, who have controlled their senses and mind – they realize their spiritual identity with the Atman, and experience total freedom, here and hereafter.”-When a person becomes liberated, his spiritual outlook is changed forever. He carries this emancipation with him everywhere and in every moment, as he conducts his duties in everyday life.-When King Chitraketu’s young son died and he was lamenting, Sages Aṅgirā and Nārada helped him understand the temporary nature of the relationship between father and son, that the physical body come and goes, and that the Atman manifests in the body. This put a spark of spiritual wisdom in Chitraketu’s heart.
The lecture was given by Swami Tattwamayananda on August 21, 2020.-5th chapter: verses 14, 15, 16, 17, 18-14th verse: “The Lord does not get involved in what we do. Neither agency, nor action, nor the fruits of actions can be attributed to Him. Our own Swabhava is responsible for how we act.”-15th verse: “The all-pervading Reality does not accept the merit or demerit of anyone. Jnanam (knowledge) is enveloped by ignorance – that’s why people get deluded.”-Swabhava is our inherent nature that determines our outlook to life and our actions. We are responsible for our actions and control our destiny. God is beyond any kind of agency of actions, and distributorship of results of actions. However, if our heart is pure and we pray with true earnestness, God’s grace can dawn on us.-Every action leaves a residual effect (vritti) in our mental system. Many identical vrittis – from similar, repeated actions – solidify a distinct memory block called Samskara. Samskaras express through our determination to act in a certain manner, called Sankalpa. Sankalpa leads to further actions. This wheel continues, and it shapes our Swabhava.-Samskaras are of two types: (1) Klesha, which are related to experiences from this life, and (2) Karmasaya, which are related to previous life experiences.-Swabhava can be of lower or higher form. The lower form causes us to act based on our biological tendencies. The higher form causes us to act based on sublime tendencies such as unselfishness, broad mindedness, and spiritual wisdom.-Spiritual practices such as Yamas, Niyamas, and Ashtanga Yoga can help to bring out the higher Swabhava that is inherent in all of us. Gita recommends the practice of Swadharma to bring out this higher Swabhava.-Mind is compared to a lake with many layers, which has pure water below and mud/filth at the top. With spiritual practices, the mud/filth of the outer layer is removed, and our true higher Swabhava is brought to surface.-16th verse: “Those whose ignorance is destroyed by the knowledge of the Atman – their knowledge manifests like the Sun, removing the ignorance.”-When we perform karma yoga and offer our actions to God, the actions/results do not go to God – rather they have a purifying effect on our own mind, they bring out our higher Swabhava, and they remove our ignorance. Just like when we suffer from cold and move towards sunlight, the cold does not go to sun – rather the sunlight removes the coldness.-Karmas are of three types: (1) Prarabdha karma – accumulated karmas that have already started unfolding (2) Sanchita karma – Accumulated karmas that are not yet manifesting and (3) Agami karma – karmas that are yet to come. When we perform spiritual disciplines, we free ourselves from Agami karmas. Highly spiritually elevated persons also burn their sanchita karmas – only their prarabdha karmas continue.-17th verse: “Those who have reached Moksha, whose intellect is absorbed in Brahman, whose identities have become one with the divine Reality, who are steadfast, and whose mental impurities are cleansed – they get free from the rotation of lifecycles.”-18th verse: “Those great spiritual giants - described in the 17th verse – they are called Punditah. God has become a reality for them. They see the same reality in everything, and everything in that reality. They look upon with an equal eye on a Brahman with learning, a cow, and elephant, a dog and an ignorant person.”-A Punditah develops unique, spiritual common sense. It gives him a sense of what is real and unreal, who should be trusted and who shouldn’t be, and so on. His characteristics are similar to that of a Stitha-prajna, who is always contented, established in equanimity of outlook, and has instinctive common sense.-Spiritual common sense is natural to a Punditah. One should not try to falsely imitate a Punditah. When we perform spiritual practices, we help our own mind to attain higher level of spiritual purity, so one day we can have the same spiritual common sense that a Punditah has. We will gradually evolve, knowing every inch of our journey.

In chapter number 8, ovi 117, it says Tatya and Mhalsapati both slept in the mosque. Their heads used to be in the east, west and north, while their feet would touch each other in the centre. Thus, Tatya slept with his head towards the east, Mhalsapati towards the west, and Baba with his head towards the north. However, they chatted through the night. Thus, Tatya slept with Baba for 14 years. But, after his father passed away, he started going home as he had to shoulder the responsibilities of his family. In the Vastu Shastra, it is recommended that we sleep with the head towards the south or the east, and sleeping with the head towards the north and west is not recommended. The reason is because the blood contains iron, and when we sleep with the head towards the north, the magnetic centre of the earth attracts the iron present in the blood. This creates pressure in the brain and can make you mentally unhealthy, and lack of proper sleep makes you feel irritated. Its regular practice can lead to brain haemorrhage. The magnetic force should flow from the feet towards the head, and not vice versa. However, Baba, in his compassion, let his divine energy flow through his feet into Tatya and Mhalsapati. How incredible was the love for these two. Sleeping in the east direction is good, but sleeping in the west direction can be harmful, which includes sleeping with your feet towards the east side. Moreover, your head should be placed in the east direction as it improves memory, concentration, good health and spirituality in a person. More on Baba's sleeping practices will be uncovered in the forthcoming chapters. The Bhiksha route, the human Rhuns, or debt, have already been discussed in chapter six. Here, a short sketch of the lives of these blessed devotees is given. The five Bhiksha houses are of Sakharam Patil Shelke, Vamanrao Gondkar, Bhayaji Appa Kote Patil, Bayaja Bai Ganpat Kote Patil, Nandaram Marwadi Sanklecha. Baba also followed the tenets of the Dutta Sampradaya, and Buddhist traditions, and used to take Bhiksha from the five blessed houses till his Maha Samadhi. He not only did this but also encouraged his devotees to take Bhiksha from the houses in Shirdi. Baba very clearly showed that he wanted his devotees to be devoid of ego and also be humble. It is believed that by taking Bhiksha, Baba used to take away a part or one third of the Sanchita, and the Prarabdha Karma of His devotees. Sakaram Patil Shelke's House This house is near the Chavadi, with a west-facing entrance. Sakaram was a farmer and a wealthy landlord, and was devoted to Baba. Sakrabai, the wife of his grandson, Haribhau, states that Baba loved Sakaram immensely. Baba stood at the crossroad between his and Vamanrao Gondkar's house and called out, “Sakaram, roti de.” She also stated that Triyambak, Haribhau's father, donated some land to the Baba Sansthan. The land for the Shirdi bus stand was donated by him. Triyambak Samadhi is in the compound of the Narasimha Temple, which is behind Sakaram's home. The other two Samadhis are of Thanabai, Triyambak's wife, and Ramgir Bua, who is mentioned in chapter 33 of the Sri Sai Satcharita. There were many Gosavis living in Shirdi at that time. Their Samadhis are in that compound. Unfortunately, their names are not known. The Narasimha Temple was constructed by the Shelke family. Lord Narasimha is the Kul Devata of the family. A priest performs Pooja daily along with Aarti and offers Bhog. Around the year 2000, the house was sold by his descendants and a multi-storey shopping centre now stands in its place. Vaman Rao Gondkar's House This house is on the right side opposite to Sakaram's home. Vaman Rao was born and bred in Shirdi. His father was affluent. They were farmers and landowners. His descendants say that they owned 500 acres of land in and around Shirdi. They also state that they owned Lendi Bagh and adjacent lands. They sold Lendi Bagh to Moreshwar Pradhan, who then gave it to the Sansthan. This is one of the blessed houses that Baba took Bhiksha from. Mention is made of this house in Sri Sai Satcharita Chapter 19, when Baba placed a ladder against this house and climbed up on the roof. Then he crossed the roof of Radha Krishna Mai's house and descended on the rear side. At that time, Baba was very sick and so was Radha Krishna Mai. Purandare had pleaded with Baba to cure Mai, and this was Baba's unique remedy. Baba gave 2 rupees to Venku Shimpi Kamblekar, who brought the ladder, for his labour. The other devotees objected, saying that Baba had paid too much. Baba told them that any work that was done should be paid for promptly and adequately. Kamblekar had no children but after he received this money he prospered and got two sons. Vaman Rao Gondkar, after leading a prosperous life, died on 15th April 1964. His descendants are still living in Shirdi and carrying on his legacy. The Palkhi and Rath, when taken in procession through the village on festivals, stop first at this...

The field of conservation was created to fight change: to prevent objects from becoming dusty, broken, or rusted. But fighting to keep cultural objects preserved creates a certain mindset — a mindset where it’s too easy to imagine objects and cultures in a state of stasis. Sanchita Balachandran, Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Archaeological Museum, founded Untold Stories to change that mindset in the conservation profession. Through events at the annual meetings of the American Institute for Conservation, Untold Stories expands cultural heritage beyond preserving the objects we might find in a museum. In this episode, Balachandran talks about Untold Story’s 2019 event: Indigenous Futures and Collaborative Conservation, avoiding the savior mentality, and how the profession has changed since she was in school. Lecture by Swami Tattwamayananda. The lecture begins with a review of Prarabdha, Sanchita, and Agami Karma. The mind becomes steady when the spiritual idea, the God idea comes automatically. Then, life and death are both spiritual experiences. The four qualities – friendliness, compassion, admiration, and indifference- towards the happy, unhappy, virtuous, and negative help us to regulate all external relations. They are essential for achieving Chitta Prasada, clarity of mind needed for spiritual life. By Samyama on these qualities, we acquire these qualities. The highest devotee sees God everywhere and everything in God but at the same time knows how to deal with negative factors. Verses: III.23, III.24

Sanchita Balachandran, Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Archaeological Museum, hopes to see the field of conservation develop into more of a social process, rather than simply a technical one. From her 2016 talk at the American Institute for Conservation’s Annual Meeting, to teaching her students how to interrogate an object in person, to her Untold Stories project, Balachandran has thought critically about the role of conservators. In this epsiode, Balachandran talks about her early formative experiences in the field of conservation and how whether or not someone’s history is worth preserving is a deeply political decision.
