Show Notes   What role is Social Media playing a role in causing eating disorders or disordered eating? Are the effects of Social Media making treatment of eating disorders more challenging?  In this podcast episode, Kate Fisch speaks with Dr. Samantha DeCaro about Social Media. She discusses the effects that Social Media has on patients recovering from eating disorders and the role it plays in causing disordered eating.   MEET DR. SAMANTHA DECARO Dr. Samantha DeCaro, PsyD is the Director of Clinical Outreach and Education for The Renfrew Center, a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania, and co-host of the podcast All Bodies, All Foods. She has been with Renfrew since 2012, completing her post-doctoral residency at The Renfrew Center Philadelphia – Spring Lane, then holding the position of Primary Therapist, and most recently serving as Assistant Clinical Director.  As Renfrew's national spokesperson, Dr. DeCaro has been featured in the media as an eating disorder expert on various television shows, radio programs, podcasts, and online magazines. She is a frequent lecturer and serves as the Alumni Representative for The Renfrew Center of Philadelphia. Visit The Renfrew Center to find out more.   IN THIS PODCAST The focus on Social Media What are Pro-Ana and Pro-Mia sites?. What risk factors do Social Media pose for eating disorders? What makes eating disorder recovery so challenging?.   Why did you choose to focus on Social Media and eating disorders? “I do a lot of trainings and education in my role and I realized that Social Media was really having a negative impact on people who were trying to recover from eating disorders.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro   Are you on Social Media? “I'm on social media myself. I knew that it was causing certain issues for me as well. I noticed I wasn't feeling great after I was done scrolling. I was realizing I was spending more time on it than I wanted to be.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro   It is interesting that even professionals within the field can be affected by Social Media and it puts an emphasis on making sure we are aware if it is leaving us in a more negative space.   “Absolutely, I am in no way Immune to the effects of social media. I think it impacts all of us and I wanted to learn more about it.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro   What are Pro-Ana and Pro-Mia sites? “I remember earlier in my career learning about Pro-ana Pro-mia, which were essentially these sites, and it's exactly what it sounds like, pro anorexia, pro eating disorder type content.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro   There are so many different apps out there that we may know very little about and thinking of it from the perspective of being a treatment provider, it is vital that we become familiar with all the different platforms that our clients may be exposed to or using.   “I remember being so concerned and horrified about the things that were happening on those sites and now with social media. Yes, I think those things still exist, to an extent, but I think that the harm is a lot more insidious. It's a lot harder to catch the different toxic messages about food, about the body.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro   Do we need to learn to be more mindful when using Social Media? “What I do in my trainings, I try to help Clinicians help their clients be more mindful on social media. How to help your client tap into what they're experiencing while they're scrolling. You might be strengthening that eating disorder without even realizing it. ” Dr. Samantha DeCaro   That's interesting because it's almost like we teach our clients how to be mindful at the table  or how to be mindful in their relationships, how to be mindful even just right in the moment.. But this is a kind of Meta  in the way that it's like another virtual environment in which they have to be mindful in.   “ Oftentimes scrolling is an act of distraction. I think that's another thing to be aware of: when are you reaching for your phone? and why?  What is that scrolling session actually doing for you in the short term?” Dr. Samantha DeCaro   What risk factors are there for those with eating disorders? “We know that intentionally pursuing weight loss is going to do more harm than good. diets are one of the biggest risk factors of an eating disorder. Diets can trigger an eating disorder and eating disorders are potentially fatal.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro   We know that many of those who come off diets and have not developed an eating disorder, still end up having a poor relationship with food and not feeling good about themselves.   What makes eating disorder recovery so challenging? “Eating disorder recovery is so challenging because there's an unlearning that has to take place. An unlearning of diet culture, an unlearning of healthism and relearning how to have a healthier relationship with food, with your body and with the media.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro   What tools do you use or teach clinicians to use? “One of the things that I think is so important is being able to actually spot harmful messages and tease those out and be able to spot toxic messages about food.”  Dr. Samantha DeCaro   A lot of messages give the impression that all bodies are the same. For example; that you're going to eat a turkey sandwich and your body is going to do exactly the same thing with that turkey sandwich as my body is going to do with it. We know now that we don't know what the differences are and how people's bodies absorb nutrients and the differences between them.   Can anything be done to reduce the chances of seeing harmful content? “I also teach in my workshops about how to play with your settings in your phone to better protect yourself and to essentially just lessen the chances/decrease the chances that you'll see harmful content in the future.”  Dr. Samantha DeCaro   The world of Social Media is everywhere and we cannot get away from it. When we are scrolling through our phones. We're not in the moment. We are trying to be distracted, it becomes repetitive and reflexive and then we're not the owners of the information that we are consuming. There are studies showing what type of information gets fed to our clients and how they can fall prey to negative body image, eating disorders and diet culture. This is a fascinating topic and as therapists we need to become aware of what we are consuming, as well as, help teach our clients to be mindful about what they're consuming. Dr. Samantha DeCaro is filled with valuable insights, information and examples of Social Media's role within our industry and some of these are discussed in-depth throughout the podcast.    To learn more about Dr. Samantha DeCaro and her work, follow the links below. Does EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy work for trauma? It has been all the rage recently, but what is it? Does it have any studies or scientific basis — or is it just the latest internet fad? The basis of the therapy is reliving a traumatic memory while receiving bilateral stimulation, such as a therapist waving their hand in front of your face. It may sound out of the ordinary, but it actually has robust data showing its effectiveness. Join us as Timothy Meyer of the Lukin Center for Psychotherapy explains this puzzling therapy for PTSD and other traumas.  To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the show's official episode page. Guest Bio Timothy Meyer, LCSW, is a psychotherapist specializing in working with trauma, anxiety, and depression, focusing primarily on working with adults, teens, and families. He and his clients collaborate to craft personalized treatment plans that address their individual needs. Poverty and socioeconomic status impacts school readiness, language development, and the important early intervention of learning disabilities. During the Covid-19 pandemic, these already underserved communities were even more drastically impacted by the inequities of our special education system. There are a lot of layers to this overwhelming problem, but through the work of organizations like the Special Needs Network in LA and individuals like Daniel Mendoza and Marcos Aguilar, we are spreading awareness and access to services otherwise difficult to obtain.   In this episode, Daniel and Marcos explain how children with special needs are impacted by inequities in their community. Daniel is the Clinical Director for the Special Needs Network's Applied Behavior Program and shares in this episode how some children with Autism are not given the services they need in underserved communities. Marcos is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Assistant Clinical Director at Special Needs Network and together with their behavioral health team, provides education and resources to families, children, and adults. They have created multiple “access points” to reach as many families in need as they can.   We could have multiple episodes on this important topic, but their mission is clear. The Special Needs Network is doing tremendous work in their community in raising public awareness of developmental disabilities and impacting public policy. I'm honored to have Daniel and Marcos on the show today to further spread this awareness. Show Notes: [1:59] - Dr. Wilson shares her experience with the Special Needs Network at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Some behaviors are due to an inability to effectively communicate. [10:03] - The delay in services for children with Autism can be up to 2 years in underserved communities. [11:22] - Daniel points out that in underserved communities, parent concerns are not taken as seriously. Parents tend to give up in their efforts to find support and early intervention. [12:17] - The lack of understanding and access to services has caused some children to not obtain therapy in some cases till they are teenagers. [13:43] - Dr. Wilson shares that she has known of families crossing state lines to seek services in other states. This is inequitable as services should be available everywhere. [14:22] - The United States is “late to the game” on services for Autism. [15:18] - Underserved communities also experience inequities in other services, even healthcare. [16:40] - Daniel describes how the Special Needs Network approaches this overwhelming work. [17:42] - What is “boots on the ground”?  [19:09] - Special Needs Network also attracts people with resources and supplies like backpacks and food during special events. They also partner with larger corporations to reach more families. [20:50] - All the different access points for Special Needs Network, they've created an infrastructure in their community, including pediatricians. [22:00] - Special Needs Network also partners with schools and is working on referral systems for school psychologists and another entry point for students. [24:07] - Parent support is also vital as having a child with special needs can be very isolating and have a negative stigma. [25:08] - Marcos emphasizes the importance of collaboration with families. [26:27] - When the team works together as a unit, that is when you see the child “take off.” [27:27] - Marcos tells families that he doesn't want to be the best to work with their child, but wants to be able to access work for their child and connect them to the right programs. [28:43] - Parents connecting with each other creates word of mouth for Special Needs Network but also builds a community of support for families with similar challenges. [31:26] - Parent mentoring also helps with the negative stigma of having a child with special needs. It creates hope for parents who are discouraged. [32:31] - Society has two different models of looking at developmental disabilities. Daniel explains them both. [34:24] - There needs to be societal change in this area of acceptance. [37:29] - Dr. Wilson invited Daniel and Marcos to speak at a town hall coming up. [38:37] - Daniel describes a new facility opening in December of this year and what they will be able to offer in one building. About Our Guests and Special Needs Network: Daniel Mendoza is the Clinical Director for Special Needs Network's Applied Behavior Analysis program, and Marcos Aguilar is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Assistant Clinical Director at Special Needs Network, Inc.  Both Daniel and Marcos are part of an interdisciplinary behavioral health team that includes behavioral analysts, clinical psychologists, social workers, and pediatricians, providing behavioral health treatment to children diagnosed with autism. Special Needs Network, Inc. is a community-based non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the needs of underserved families struggling with raising a child with developmental disabilities.  Their mission is to raise public awareness of developmental disabilities and to impact public policy, while providing education and resources to families, children and adults. SNN serves as a link between under-served communities and mainstream developmental disability organizations and governmental institutions, which often fail to address issues specific to these communities. SNN firmly believes that dignity, hope and opportunity are the birthright of all children. Founded in 2005, Special Needs Network, Inc. (SNN) grew out of the struggles of Areva D. Martin, Esq. after her son Marty was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2. After finding it incredibly difficult to access services for Marty, Ms. Martin became aware of the enormous challenges faced by families affected by developmental disabilities in underserved communities – in particular, the neighborhood of South Los Angeles. A Harvard-trained attorney, Ms. Martin used her entrepreneurial and legal skills, as well as her own experiences navigating the complex system of care, to create a parent-centered organization with a mission to help the communities in need through four resolutions:1. Reduce the waiting period for families to have their children diagnosed;2. Bring education, resources, and services directly to the community;3. Provide unique learning opportunities for children and young adults with developmental disabilities; and4. Forge an action-based coalition of families empowered to self-advocate at all levels of government.
