Golf went international this week, plus new music from Kanye, golf influencer, golfer, style icon, and podcaster Bradford Wilson, and LET professional Ana Belac. All hosted by Alex Lauzon and Michael Russell. The Mexico Open was a sleepy affair in terms of names, but Alex had it right and picked his first winner of 2024 (1:55). The LPGA kicked off their Asian swing, with a Thai sensation returning to the winner's circle (4:58). LIV Golf is making waves for getting Anthony Kim, and throwing mad money towards a PGA TOUR loyalist (6:19). On our YouTube channel you can see more from our trip to the PGA Show, including a quick chat with a 2-time World Series Champion, Johnny Damon (10:32). The PGA TOUR comes to Florida and PGA National for the Cognizant Classic, where Rory McIlroy headlines the field (11:42). Alex is also in Florida, but not for the PGA TOUR. Still, he'll be playing some golf under the lights and wonders how he'll do (14:04). In Tuned In, Alex is checking out Kanye's new album (14:49), Michael watches the Oscar nominated "The Holdovers" (17:19), and breaking news about Ryan Gosling at The Oscars (19:07). Bradford Wilson is an actor, golfer, influencer, and podcaster, and chats with Alex from the PGA Show floor about his podcast, Group Golf Therapy, playing golf in Southern California, and his favorite smells on the course (19:50). Ana Belac is a Scandinavian LET golfer, who recently won a national championship at Duke. Ana chats with Alex from the PGA Show about learning to play in a country with 10 courses, how she got to Duke, and what it was like coming to America for college (41:12). As we #AlwaysEndWithFood, Alex is excitedly enjoying a childhood favorite, Del's Lemonade, as they come to Texas, and Michael shares his favorite childhood treat (58:17). Support our friends! Show Notes What role is Social Media playing a role in causing eating disorders or disordered eating? Are the effects of Social Media making treatment of eating disorders more challenging? In this podcast episode, Kate Fisch speaks with Dr. Samantha DeCaro about Social Media. She discusses the effects that Social Media has on patients recovering from eating disorders and the role it plays in causing disordered eating. MEET DR. SAMANTHA DECARO Dr. Samantha DeCaro, PsyD is the Director of Clinical Outreach and Education for The Renfrew Center, a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania, and co-host of the podcast All Bodies, All Foods. She has been with Renfrew since 2012, completing her post-doctoral residency at The Renfrew Center Philadelphia – Spring Lane, then holding the position of Primary Therapist, and most recently serving as Assistant Clinical Director. As Renfrew's national spokesperson, Dr. DeCaro has been featured in the media as an eating disorder expert on various television shows, radio programs, podcasts, and online magazines. She is a frequent lecturer and serves as the Alumni Representative for The Renfrew Center of Philadelphia. Visit The Renfrew Center to find out more. IN THIS PODCAST The focus on Social Media What are Pro-Ana and Pro-Mia sites?. What risk factors do Social Media pose for eating disorders? What makes eating disorder recovery so challenging?. Why did you choose to focus on Social Media and eating disorders? “I do a lot of trainings and education in my role and I realized that Social Media was really having a negative impact on people who were trying to recover from eating disorders.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro Are you on Social Media? “I'm on social media myself. I knew that it was causing certain issues for me as well. I noticed I wasn't feeling great after I was done scrolling. I was realizing I was spending more time on it than I wanted to be.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro It is interesting that even professionals within the field can be affected by Social Media and it puts an emphasis on making sure we are aware if it is leaving us in a more negative space. “Absolutely, I am in no way Immune to the effects of social media. I think it impacts all of us and I wanted to learn more about it.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro What are Pro-Ana and Pro-Mia sites? “I remember earlier in my career learning about Pro-ana Pro-mia, which were essentially these sites, and it's exactly what it sounds like, pro anorexia, pro eating disorder type content.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro There are so many different apps out there that we may know very little about and thinking of it from the perspective of being a treatment provider, it is vital that we become familiar with all the different platforms that our clients may be exposed to or using. “I remember being so concerned and horrified about the things that were happening on those sites and now with social media. Yes, I think those things still exist, to an extent, but I think that the harm is a lot more insidious. It's a lot harder to catch the different toxic messages about food, about the body.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro Do we need to learn to be more mindful when using Social Media? “What I do in my trainings, I try to help Clinicians help their clients be more mindful on social media. How to help your client tap into what they're experiencing while they're scrolling. You might be strengthening that eating disorder without even realizing it. ” Dr. Samantha DeCaro That's interesting because it's almost like we teach our clients how to be mindful at the table or how to be mindful in their relationships, how to be mindful even just right in the moment.. But this is a kind of Meta in the way that it's like another virtual environment in which they have to be mindful in. “ Oftentimes scrolling is an act of distraction. I think that's another thing to be aware of: when are you reaching for your phone? and why? What is that scrolling session actually doing for you in the short term?” Dr. Samantha DeCaro What risk factors are there for those with eating disorders? “We know that intentionally pursuing weight loss is going to do more harm than good. diets are one of the biggest risk factors of an eating disorder. Diets can trigger an eating disorder and eating disorders are potentially fatal.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro We know that many of those who come off diets and have not developed an eating disorder, still end up having a poor relationship with food and not feeling good about themselves. What makes eating disorder recovery so challenging? “Eating disorder recovery is so challenging because there's an unlearning that has to take place. An unlearning of diet culture, an unlearning of healthism and relearning how to have a healthier relationship with food, with your body and with the media.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro What tools do you use or teach clinicians to use? “One of the things that I think is so important is being able to actually spot harmful messages and tease those out and be able to spot toxic messages about food.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro A lot of messages give the impression that all bodies are the same. For example; that you're going to eat a turkey sandwich and your body is going to do exactly the same thing with that turkey sandwich as my body is going to do with it. We know now that we don't know what the differences are and how people's bodies absorb nutrients and the differences between them. Can anything be done to reduce the chances of seeing harmful content? “I also teach in my workshops about how to play with your settings in your phone to better protect yourself and to essentially just lessen the chances/decrease the chances that you'll see harmful content in the future.” Dr. Samantha DeCaro The world of Social Media is everywhere and we cannot get away from it. When we are scrolling through our phones. We're not in the moment. We are trying to be distracted, it becomes repetitive and reflexive and then we're not the owners of the information that we are consuming. There are studies showing what type of information gets fed to our clients and how they can fall prey to negative body image, eating disorders and diet culture. This is a fascinating topic and as therapists we need to become aware of what we are consuming, as well as, help teach our clients to be mindful about what they're consuming. Dr. Samantha DeCaro is filled with valuable insights, information and examples of Social Media's role within our industry and some of these are discussed in-depth throughout the podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It has been said that you can find anything on the internet. The reality is that all of us – young and old alike – are able to find and engage with everything from the good, to the bad and the ugly. A quick scan of tiktok, that video sharing social media platform popular among our kids, yields a surprising number of pro-anorexia hashtags that lead to videos which have been viewed by billions of young viewers. As if our kids don't already face enough body image pressure to pursue unreasonable body shapes and types, these TikTok videos teach our kids how to pursue and indulge Anorexia Nervosa. Even kids who go to tiktok looking for dieting advice can soon find themselves clicking through video after video which leads them into the dark rabbit hole of pro-anorexia content which teaches them how to restrict food intake, fast, and even hide the disorder from their parents. Our kids need parents who teach them to find their identities in who they are as God's image-bearers.

In this episode, we discuss social attitudes toward pro-ana, and explore why legislation to ban pro-ana content from social media is problematic.*When speaking of Pro Ana Websites, we refer to any of a diverse number of websites created by people with eating disorders for the participation of other people with eating disorders. These websites tend to share some features, such as images of extreme thinness and tips for disordered eating practices, but also support and advice.

Also in this episode:[25:00] - My sister is pro ana (anorexia), what should I do?(2)[40:00] - My girlfriend of two years refuses to post pictures of me online, she wants me kept a secret. Also our BIG announcement: We have launched our Patreon! You can become a supporting member of our community and help us spread mental health support around the world! Check out our patreon levels at www.patreon.com/therapy or look below: $1 / Month = THERAPAL - Therapals are the official fan club of Pod Therapy who help make the weekly show possible. A Therapal is an advocate for mental health, wellness, and sending good vibes to the people who write in about their problems each week. **WHAT THEY GET** Therapals get a special thank you by name on the show the first week they pledge and access to any bonus content created for Patreon. $5 / Month = THERAPOD - Therapods are...shall we say...different. They are the sophisticated and dapper three-toed reptilian members of the fan club who kick in the cost of a monthly lunch to make the weekly shows possible. Therapods are fiercely clever and committed to making the world a better place for all sentient species. **WHAT THEY GET** Therapods get a thank you by name on the show the first week they join and every month they remain a Therapod. They also get access to any bonus content created for Patreon. $20 / Month - THERAPRODUCER - We don't do ads in Pod Therapy. Instead during the breaks our Theraproducers share an encouraging message, plug for a website or endorsement, or favorite quote. These 8 Elite members care deeply about people having access to a show about mental health and they shoulder the responsibility of producing it. **WHAT THEY GET** Theraproducers get to fill one ad-break spot each month with their own personal message, quote, lyric, etc. They can record their own voice message or submit in writing and have it read on air. Of course they are also thanked by name and have access to any bonus content created for Patreon.

Vancouver court stenographer and poet, Susan Steudel visits with Kevin and Pam.
Kara discusses eating disorders and writing community in Prince George with Kevin and Pam.
Prof. Ulrike Schmidt joins us to discuss the three main eating disorders, anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Are eating disorders a illness peculiar to young white women, or is anybody susceptible? What causes somebody to develop an eating disorder? Is it all about looking good, or are there deeper issues at play? We discuss the stigma and misconceptions surrounding eating disorders, the long term physical consequences, and we even delve into the bizarre world of Pro-Ana and “Thinspiration” websites where eating disorders are both promoted and celebrated. *** BOOKS MENTIONED *** "Getting Better Bite by Bite" https://amzn.to/33i35RB DISCLAIMER: My Own Worst Enemy is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.co.uk and affiliated sites.
Pro Ana. My friend Mia. Thinspiration. If you know these terms, you are familiar with one of the dark corners of the internet where vulnerable people go to find support in making bad life decisions. These are pro-eating disorder communities that teach women how to be better at starving themselves. A language emerged to bypass bans and filters, replacing trigger words like anorexia and bulimia, with friendly phrases like: “my friends Ana and Mia.” Bone thin bodies, grim weight statistics, and frightening calorie counts are posted as goals and achievements, hashtagged #thinspiration. "When you are starving you don't feel emotion. So I hadn't felt a lot in a while." These communities have existed as long as the internet, but 25 years after the start of the web, digital life has its tentacles around us in a different way. The threat has matured. Now, if you are trying to recover from an eating disorder, temptation is just a Tweet or Instagram away. And when a single picture of bony arm or a post about a celebrity who only weighs 100 pounds can mess with your recovery, it's not just the internet that's a dangerous place. It's your whole world. This week on the podcast, the story of how a lonely young girl used the internet to get better at starving herself for over a decade without even her family finding out. And then, the online moment that changed her course to recovery. In this episode: Joanna Kay opens up about growing up with anorexia alongside an ever evolving online threat. Sharon Hodgson remembers the dark days of running a Pro-Ana site for anorexics. danah boyd tells us why banning these sites -- as Italy has tried to do -- is a fools errand. Ideas for what could help girls like Joanna. Resources and where to get help: Joanna Kay's wonderfully brave personal recovery blog: Middle Ground Musings. National Eating Disorder Association. You can call them at1–800–931–2237 or chat with them online. National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. Sharon Hodgson's recovery site, We Bite Back. Hey gang. So I've actually never heard of the Bacon Rebellion before and Phoenie Loco bought it to my attention so, I'm here to listen and she's here to teach. She will be live to take your calls, comments and questions. We'll also dig into this Pro Ana, Pro MIa situation that went on and is probably still going on that I think is just plain harmful to our young people. With the spill over time, we'll have 15 things black people must do to end racism, and black feminist blog updates.

My friend came to my apartment and let me ask her questions about cutting herself. It turns out, the problems went way deeper than the cuts did. She spent multiple stints in rehab facilities to try and overcome her problems with self abuse. See, cutting was just the beginning. She also had to deal with anorexia. It's a complex web.
