[2:40] Before we get on with the show, I wanted to let you know that this episode was recorded in the first week of October. That means we are amid a Federal Government shutdown. RIMS has produced a special report on “Key Considerations Regarding U.S. Government Shutdown.” [2:58] This is an apolitical problem. It is available in the Risk Knowledge section of RIMS.org, and a link is in this episode's show notes. Visit RIMS.org/Advocacy for more updates. [3:12] Remember to save March 18th and 19th on your calendars for the RIMS Legislative Summit 2026, which will be held in Washington, D.C. I will continue to keep you informed about that critical event. [3:24] On with the show! It's National Cybersecurity Awareness Month here in the U.S. and in many places around the world. Cyber continues to be a top risk among organizations of all sizes in the public and private sectors. [3:40] That is why I'm delighted that Katherine Henry and Harold (Hal) Weston are here to discuss their new professional report, “A 2025 Cybersecurity Legal Safe Harbor Overview”. [3:52] This report provides a general overview of expected cybersecurity measures that organizations must take to satisfy legal Safe Harbor requirements. [4:01] It summarizes state Safe Harbor laws that have been developed to ensure organizations are proactive about cybersecurity and that digital, financial, and intellectual assets are legally protected when that inevitable cyber attack occurs. [4:15] We are here to extend the dialogue. Let's get started! [4:21] Interview! Katherine Henry and Hal Weston, welcome to RIMScast! [4:41] Katherine was one of he first guests on RIMScast. Katherine is Chair of the Policyholder Insurance Coverage Practice at Bradley, Arant, Boult, Cummings. Her office is based in Washington, D.C. She works with risk managers all day on insurance issues. [5:05] Katherine has been a member of the RIMS Public Policy Committee for several years. She serves as an advisor to the Committee. [5:12] Justin thanks Katherine for her contributions to RIMS. [5:25] Hal is with Georgia State University. He has been with RIMS for a couple of decades. Hal says he and Katherine have served together on the RIMS Public Policy Committee for maybe 10 years. [5:48] Hal is a professor at Georgia State University, a Clinical Associate in the Robinson College of Business, Greenberg School of Risk Science, where he teaches risk management and insurance. Before his current role, Hal was an insurance lawyer, both regulatory and coverage. [6:05] Hal has a lot of students. He is grading exams this week. He has standards for his class. In the real world, so does a business. [6:46] Katherine and Hal met through the RIMS Public Policy Committee. They started together on some subcommittees. Now they see each other at the annual meeting and on monthly calls. [7:05] Katherine and Hal just released a legislative review during RIMS's 75th anniversary, “A 2025 Cybersecurity Legal Safe Harbor Overview”. It is available on the Risk Knowledge page of RIMS.org. [7:20] We're going to get a little bit of dialogue that extends beyond the pages. [7:31] Katherine explains Safe Harbor: When parties are potentially liable to third parties for claims, certain states have instilled Safe Harbor Laws that say, If you comply with these requirements, we'll provide you some liability protection. [7:45] Katherine recommends that you read the paper to see what the laws are in your state. The purpose of the paper is to describe some of those Safe Harbor laws, as well as all the risks. [8:04] October 14th, the date this episode is released, is World Standards Day. Hal calls that good news. Justin says the report has a correlation with the standards in the risk field. [8:43] Justin states that many states tie Safe Harbor eligibility to frameworks like NIST, the ISO/IEC 27000, and CIS Controls. [9:27] Hal says, There are several standards, and it would be up to the Chief Information Security Officer to guide a company on which framework might be most appropriate for them. There are the NIST, UL, and ISO, and they overlap quite a bit. [9:56] These are recognized standards. In some states, if a company has met this standard of cybersecurity, a lawsuit against the company for breach of its standard of care for maintaining its information systems would probably be defensible for having met a recognized standard. [10:23] Katherine adds that as risk managers, we can't make the decision about which of these external standards is the best. Many organizations have a Cybersecurity Officer responsible for this. [10:44] For smaller organizations, there are other options, including outsourcing to a vendor. Their insurance companies may have recommendations. So you're not on your own in making this decision. [11:14] Katherine says firms should definitely aim for one recognized standard. Katherine recommends you try to adhere to the highest standard. If you are global, you need to be conscious of standards in other countries. [11:46] Hal says California tends to have the highest standards for privacy and data protection. If you're a financial services company, you're subject to New York State's Department of Financial Services Cyber Regulation. [12:02] If you're operating in Europe, GDPR is going to be the guiding standard for what you should do. Hal agrees with Katherine: Any company that spans multiple states should pick the highest standard and stick to that, rather than try to implement five or 52 standards. [12:23] When you're overseas, you may not be able to just pick the highest standard; there are challenges in going from one country or region of Europe back to the U.S. If one is higher, it will probably be easier. [12:38] There are major differences between the U.S., which has little Federal protection, vs. state protection. [13:10] Katherine says if you don't have the internal infrastructure, and you can't afford that infrastructure, the best thing is to pivot to an outside vendor. There are many available, with a broad price range. Your cyber insurer may also have some vendors they already work with. [13:40] Hal would add, Don't just think about Safe Harbors. That's just a legal defense. Think about how you reduce the risk by adopting standards or hiring outside firms that will provide that kind of risk protection and IT management. [13:59] If they're doing it right, they may tell you the standards they use, and they may have additional protocols, whether or not they fall within those standards, that would also be desirable. A mid-sized firm is probably outsourcing it to begin with. [14:21] They have to be thinking about it as risk, rather than just Safe Harbor. You have to navigate to the Safe Harbor. You don't just get there. [14:31] Quick Break! RISKWORLD 2026 will be in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from May 3rd through the 6th. RIMS members can now lock in the 2025 rate for a full conference pass to RISKWORLD 2026 when you register by October 30th! [15:54] We're talking about their new paper, “A 2025 Cybersecurity Legal Safe Harbor Overview”. Katherine mentions that some businesses are regulated. They have to comply with external regulatory standards. [16:38] Other small brick-and-mortar businesses may not have any standards they have to comply with. They look for what to do to protect themselves from cyber risk, and how to tell others they are doing that. [16:54] If you can meet the standards of Safe Harbor laws, a lot of which are preventative, before a breach, you can inform your customers, “These are the protections we have for your data.” You can tell your board, “These are the steps we're taking in place.” [17:13] You can look down the requirements of the Safe Harbor law in your state or a comparable state, and see steps you can take in advance so you can say, “We are doing these things and that makes our system safer for you and protects your data.” [17:34] Hal says you don't want to have a breach, and if you do, it would be embarrassing to admit you were late applying a patch, implementing multi-factor authentication, or another security measure. By following standards of better cyber protection, you avoid those exposures. [18:07] Hal says every company has either been hacked and knows it, or has been hacked and doesn't know it. If you're attacked by a nation-state that is non-preventable, you're in good shape. [18:26] If you're attacked because you've left some ports open on your system, or other things that are usually caught in cybersecurity analyses or assessments, that's the embarrassing part. You don't want to be in that position. [18:43] Katherine says it's not just your own systems, but if you rely on vendors, you want to ensure that the vendors have the proper security systems in place so that your data, to the extent that it's transmitted to them, is not at risk. [19:07] Also, make sure that your vendors have cyber insurance and that you're an additional insured on that vendor's policy if there's any potential exposure. [19:22] Hal says If you're using a cloud provider, do you understand what the cloud provider is doing? In most cases, they will provide better security than what you could do on your own, but there have been news stories that even some of those have not been perfect. [20:22] Hal talks about the importance of encryption. It's in the state statutes and regulations. There have been news stories of companies that didn't encrypt their data on their servers or in the cloud, and didn't understand encryption, when a data breach was revealed. [20:52] Hal places multi-factor authentication up with encryption in importance. There was a case brought against a company that did not have MFA, even though it said on its application on the cyber policy that the company used it. [21:13] Hal says these are standard, basic things that no company should be missing. If you don't know that your data is encrypted, get help fast to figure that out. [21:51] Hal has also seen news stories of major companies where the Chief Technology Officer has been sued individually, either by the SEC or others, for not doing it right. [22:07] Katherine mentions there are insurance implications. If you mistakenly state you're providing some sort of protection on your insurance application that you're not providing, the insurer can rescind your coverage, so you have no coverage in place at all. [22:23] Katherine says, These are technical safeguards, but we know the human factor is one of the greatest risks in cybersecurity. Having training for everyone who has access to your computer system, virtually everyone in your organization, is very important. [22:49] Have a test with questions like, Is this a spam email or a real email? There are some vendors who can do all this for you. Statistics show that the human element is one of the most significant problems in cybersecurity protection. [23:05] Justin says it's October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month in the U.S. Last week's guest, Gwenn Cujdik, the Incident Response and Cyber Services Lead for North America at AXA XL, said the number one cyber risk is human error, like clicking the phishing link.  [23:45] Justin brings up that when he was recently on vacation, he got an email on his personal email account, “from his CEO,” asking him to handle something for them. Justin texted somebody else at RIMS, asking if they got the same email, and they hadn't. [24:14] Justin sent the suspect email to the IT director to handle. You have to be vigilant. Don't let your guard down for a second. [24:48] Katherine has received fake emails, as well. [24:51] Hal says it has happened to so many people. Messages about gift cards or the vendor having a new bank account. Call the vendor that you know and ask what this is. [25:12] Hall continues. It's important to train employees in cybersecurity, making sure that they are using a VPN when they are outside of the office, or even a VPN that's specific to your company. [25:32] Hal saw in the news recently that innocent-looking PDF files can harbor lots of malware. If you're not expecting a PDF file from somebody, don't click on that, even if you know them. Get verification. Start a new thread with the person who sent it and ask if it is a legitimate PDF. [26:08] Justin says of cybercriminals that they are smart and their tactics evolve faster than legislation. How can organizations anticipate the next generation of threats? [26:34] Katherine says, You need to have an infrastructure in your organization that does that, or you need to go to an outside vendor. You need some sort of protection, internally or externally. [27:11] Katherine says she works with CFOs all the time. If an organization isn't large enough to have a risk manager, it's a natural fit for the CFO, who handles finances, to handle insurance. When it comes to cybersecurity, a CFO needs help. [27:46] The CFO should check the cyber policy to see what support services are already there and see if there are any that are preventative, vs. after a breach. If there are not, Katherine suggests pivoting to an outside vendor. [28:07] Hal continues, This interview is for RIMS members who are risk managers and the global risk community. Risk managers don't claim to know all the risk control measures throughout a company. They rely upon the experts in the company and outside. [28:29] If the CFO is the risk manager, he or she has big gaps in expertise needed for risk management. It's the same for the General Counsel running risk management. Risk managers are known for having small staffs and working with everybody else to get the right answers. [28:55] If you're dealing with the CFO or General Counsel in those roles, they need to be even more mindful to work with the right experts for guidance. [29:09] One Final Break! As many of you know, the RIMS ERM Conference 2025 will be held on November 17th and 18th in Seattle, Washington. We recently had ERM Conference Keynote Speaker Dan Chuparkoff on the show. [29:26] He is back, just to deliver a quick message about what you can expect from his keynote on “AI and the Future of Risk.” Dan, welcome back to RIMScast! [29:37] Dan says, Greetings, RIMS members and the global risk community! I'm Dan Chuparkoff, AI expert and the CEO of Reinvention Labs. I'm delighted to be your opening keynote on November 17th at the RIMS ERM Conference 2025 in Seattle, Washington. [29:52] Artificial Intelligence is fueling the next era of work, productivity, and innovation. There are challenges in navigating anything new. This is especially true for risk management, as enterprises adapt to shifting global policies, economic swings, and a new generation of talent. [30:10] We'll have a realistic discussion about the challenges of preparing for the future of AI. To learn more about my keynote, “AI and the Future of Risk Management,”  and how AI will impact Enterprise Risk Management for you, listen to my episode of RIMScast at RIMS.org/Dan. [30:29] Be sure to register for the RIMS ERM Conference 2025, in Seattle, Washington, on November 17th and 18th, by visiting the Events page on RIMS.org. I look forward to seeing you all there. [30:40] Justin thanks Dan and looks forward to seeing him again on November 17th and hearing all about the future of AI and risk management! [30:48] Let's Conclude Our Interview about Navigating Cyber and IT Practices to Legal Safe Harbors with Katherine Henry and Hal Weston! [31:17] Katherine tells about how Safe Harbor compliance influences cyber insurance. If your organization applies for cyber insurance and you can't meet some minimum threshold that will be identified on the application, the insurer will not even offer you cyber insurance. [31:34] You need to have some cyber protections in place. That's just to procure insurance. Cyber insurance availability is growing. Your broker can bring you more insurers to quote if you can show robust safeguards. [32:05] After the breach, your insurer is supposed to step in to help you. Your insurer will be mindful of whether or not your policy application is correct and that you have all these protections in place. [32:21] The more protections you have, the quicker you might be able to shut down the breach, and the resulting damage from the breach, and that will lower the resulting cost of the claim and have less of an impact on future premiums. [32:36] If the cyber insurer just had to pay out the limits because something wasn't in place, that quote next year is not going to look so pretty. Your protections have a direct impact on both the availability and cost of coverage. [32:50] Justin mentions that the paper highlights Connecticut, Tennessee, Iowa, Ohio, Utah, and Oregon as the states with Safe Harbor laws. The Federal requirements are also listed. Katherine expects that more states will offer Safe Harbor laws as cybercrime lawsuits increase. [33:42] Hal says Oregon, Ohio, and Utah were the leaders in creating Safe Harbors. Some of the other states have followed. Safe Harbor is a statutory protection against liability claims brought by the public. [34:06] In other states, you can't point to a statute that gives protection, but you can say you complied with the highest standards in the nation, and you probably have a pretty defensible case against a claim for not having kept up with your duty to protect against a cyber attack. [34:55] Hal adds that every company is going to be sued, and the claim is that you failed to do something. If you have protected yourself with all the known best practices, as they evolve, what more is a company supposed to do? [35:18] The adversaries are nation-states; they are professional criminals, sometimes operating under the protection of nation-states, and they're using artificial intelligence to craft even more devious ways to get in. [36:19] Katherine speaks from a historical perspective. A decade ago, cyber insurance was available, but there was no appetite for it. There wasn't an understanding of the risk. [36:32] As breaches began to happen and to multiply, in large amounts of exposure, with companies looking at millions of dollars in claims, interest grew. Katherine would be surprised today if any responsible board didn't take cyber risk extremely seriously. [36:55] The board's decision now is what limits to purchase and from whom, and not, “Should we have cyber insurance at all?” Katherine doesn't think it's an issue anymore in any medium-sized company. [37:17] The risk manager should present to the board, “We benchmark. Our broker benchmarks. Companies of our size have had this type of claim, with this type of exposure, and they've purchased this amount of limits. We need to be at least in that place.” Boards will be receptive. [37:43] If they are not receptive, put on a PowerPoint with all the data that's out there about how bad the situation is. The average cost of a breach is well over $2 million. The statistics are quite alarming. A wise decision-maker will understand that you need to procure this coverage. [38:10] Katherine says, from the cybersecurity side, you procure the coverage, you protect the company, and take advantage of the Safe Harbors. All of those things come together with the preventative measures we've been talking about. [38:24] You can show your decision-makers and stakeholders that if you do all those things, comply with these Safe Harbor provisions, you're going to minimize your exposure, increase the availability of insurance, and keep your premiums down. It's a win-win package. [38:41] Justin says, It has been such a pleasure to meet you, Hal, and thank you for joining us. Katherine, it is an annual pleasure to see you. We're going to see you, most likely, at the RIM Legislative Summit, March 18th and 19th, 2026, in Washington, D.C. [39:01] Details to come, at RIMS.org/Advocacy. Katherine, you'll be there to answer questions. Katherine looks forward to the Summit. She has gone there for years. Dr. Olivardia is a clinical psychologist, lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Clinical Associate at McLean Hospital. He maintains a private practice in Lexington, MA, where he specializes in the treatment of ADHD, executive functioning issues, and issues that face students with learning differences. He is a recognized expert in the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). He is on the Professional Advisory Boards for Children and Adults with ADHD (CHADD) and The Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA), as well as sits on the Scientific Advisory Board for ADDitude and the Expert Network for Understood. He is co-author of The Adonis Complex, a book which details the various manifestations of body image problems in males. He has appeared in publications such as Time, GQ, and Rolling Stone, and has been featured on Good Morning America, Extra, CBS This Morning, CNN, and VH1. He has spoken on numerous radio and webinar shows and presents at many talks and conferences around the country. He also has lived experience as someone with ADHD and learning differences and a parent of two teenagers with ADHD and Dyslexia. Key Takeaways: 1. ADHD and Eating Disorders: ADHD impacts all life domains, with symptoms like impulsivity, executive dysfunction, and high sensory needs that influence eating behaviors. For many with ADHD, eating is driven by sensory-seeking, and the brain's need for stimulation can lead to unhealthy eating patterns. ADHD is often associated with binge eating and food impulsivity, influenced by genetic and neurological factors, such as dopamine dysregulation and low levels of GABA, the neurotransmitter related to inhibition.   2. Genetics, Food Culture, and Neurobiology: Dr. Olivardia shares how his family's love for food shaped his relationship with eating and sensory stimulation. ADHD brains often experience high stimulation from ultra-processed foods, which can drive cravings and overeating due to dopamine's role in the brain's reward system.   3. Executive Function Challenges in Meal Planning: ADHD can make meal planning, shopping, and cooking overwhelming. Structured lists, simple recipes, and single-pot meals can help manage mealtime more effectively for those with ADHD. Regular, scheduled meals prevent intense late-night eating often seen in ADHD.   4. Medication and Treatment Options: Stimulant medications, like Vyvanse (FDA-approved for binge eating disorder), help some individuals with ADHD manage impulsivity around food by improving focus and reducing cravings. Proper medication can significantly enhance treatment outcomes for ADHD-related eating challenges. For individuals who don't respond to medication, behavioral strategies such as maintaining regular sleep schedules, exercising, and using music for grounding can be effective.   5. Binge Eating and Addiction Risks:  Dr. Olivardia highlights the link between ADHD and addiction, including food addiction. ADHD brains metabolize glucose differently, leading to cravings for high-sugar foods. Education on how ADHD brains work can alleviate feelings of weakness or shame in managing eating behaviors.   6. Self-Acceptance and Neurodiversity: Dr. Olivardia encourages embracing ADHD and neurodiversity, emphasizing that people with ADHD often excel in creative and mission-driven fields. ADHD challenges can become strengths, leading to fulfilling, meaningful work and connections.   Resources: • CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) – A leading organization for ADHD support and resources: https://chadd.org   • Attitude Magazine – A resource for ADHD insights and content: https://www.additudemag.com   The content of our show is educational only. September 28th is International Safe Abortion Day, a global day of action dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of safe and legal abortion care and access to it. In Canada, one in three women will have an abortion in their lifetime, and abortion is one of the most common healthcare needs in our country. While most women in the country support the right to choose and access abortion, there still exist knowledge gaps on the subject. For example, six in every ten Canadian women can't differentiate between medication abortion and the Plan B pill. This data was obtained through a national online Ipsos survey commissioned by Linepharma International to understand the current knowledge of abortion methods, preferences, and availabilities of options in Canada. The results underscore the importance of destigmatizing conversations about abortion once and for all.To acknowledge the importance of International Safe Abortion Day, Linepharma International invited our host Eva Hartling to speak with two experts on the subject. She is joined by Dr. Konia Trouton, a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Practice at UBC and a Clinical Associate at Women's College Hospital in Toronto, and Rachel Cairns, a performer, writer and creator of Aborsh, a popular podcast on abortion in Canada. In this conversation, we aim to shed some light on the role and benefits of reproductive and sexual education for women and the path to lifting stigmas surrounding abortion and reproductive rights in the country — ensuring that all can access safe abortion care. For more on abortion options in Canada, visit: http://myabortionoptions.ca/This season of our podcast is brought to you by TD Canada Women in Enterprise. With basic proof that you are either a licensed clinician or studying to be one (including undergraduates), you get instant access to the TDT discussion forum, where you can speak to other clinicians/students about episodes, topics, and modalities. There is no membership; you are simply sent a link, and can begin posting immediately. Posts are anonymous, just like the TDT Clinical Associate email list. So what is basic proof of being a clinician/student? Whatever. Something easy. A photo of a degree or license on your office wall right now. Or a student registration document with a current date. Nothing that requires effort. It won't be kept on file or shared. TDT recognizes the risks inherent in creating an informal discussion with no membership or absolute proof of eligibility as a clinician/student. However, formalizing this with membership (although that enables removing individuals who cause trouble) places TDT in the role of yet another organization, rather than a means of encouraging dialogue between groups. So it's a risk, but the alternative is perpetuating the lack of interdisciplinary dialogue. Check out TDT on Spotify and Apple Podcasts as well. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Steven Gundry. He is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Dr. Steven Gundry completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan and served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health for years. There, he invented devices that reverse the cell death seen in acute heart attacks; variations of these devices subsequently became the Gundry™ Retrograde Cardioplegia Cannula. It has become the world's most widely used device of its kind to protect the heart from damage during open-heart surgery.  In 2002, Dr. Gundry met someone who would change the trajectory of his career… and life. He crossed paths with an "inoperable" patient named “Big Ed”. Using a combination of dietary changes and nutraceutical supplements — Big Ed lost weight and cleared most of his arterial blockages. An obese, chronic "diet" failure himself, Dr. Gundry adapted his Yale University thesis to design a diet for himself based on evolutionary genetic coding. On this diet, he lost weight — to the tune of 70 pounds — and reversed his own ailments, such as migraines, pre-diabetic status, and arthritis. He stopped eating sugar, grains, peanuts and cashews, nightshades and other lectin-heavy foods. Having experienced weight loss and the results of eating a lectin-free and gluten-free diet himself, and inspired by growing research involving the NIH's Human Microbiome Project, his commitment to better health and longevity through a better diet solidified. His work creating nutraceutical products and supplements advanced. He is now the leading expert on the lectin-free lifestyle as the key to reversing disease and healing a leaky gut. Dr. Steven Gundry freely shares his research on how to maintain a healthy microbiome and live a long, vital life via his best-selling books, YouTube channel, Gundry MD blogs, and weekly health podcast, The Dr. Gundry Podcast. In this episode, Dr. Gundry defines ketosis and explains the direct benefit that ketones have on the brain. Plus, Dr. Gundry dives deep into the mitochondria and why they have to uncouple to survive. You'll find out what the “mito club” is and why calorie restriction is a non-starter, and it simply does not work. Ketone bodies are short-chain fats that are water-soluble.  Ketones have a distinct benefit in getting to the brain, which free fatty acids can't because they're too big to get through the blood-brain barrier. Ketosis should happen every night after about eight hours of not eating if you are metabolically flexible.  50% of ordinary people are not metabolically flexible.  [03:50] Uncoupling To Survive: How The Mitochondria Release Pressure  Dr. Gundry recommends reading Uncoupling To Survive: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11053672/ When you're starving to death, mitochondria have to save themselves at all costs.  If mitochondria die, then it's all over.  Making energy is hard work; it's very damaging to mitochondria.  Mitochondria have to have ways of protecting themselves, and one of the ways they protect themselves is to release pressure.  There are five pressure release valves for the mitochondria.  We couple oxygen and protons to make ATP. If we uncouple the burning of oxygen from making ATP, that's how we release pressure.  [21:05] The Reason, Most People, Cannot Get Into Ketosis Right Away  Most people can not get into ketosis by following a high-fat diet because they lack metabolic flexibility.  Many people are insulin resistant. Their cells no longer listen to insulin, so insulin keeps rising and rising.  It can take three to four weeks to liberate fat from fat cells on a ketogenic diet because insulin levels stay high for so long.  The ketogenic diet came about to treat childhood epilepsy.   If you put kids on an MCT oil-based diet, with only about 50% of their calories coming from fat, they would get the same benefit as the full-blown ketogenic diet. [32:25] The “Mito Club” - How Your Body Is Just Like A Nightclub  The mito club has one entrance, and there is only one exit.  If everything works out okay, a proton and electron will couple and exit the mito club.  However, there are a lot more electrons than there are protons.  Electrons will also couple with oxygen; it's a bad match.  The mito club needs to be cleaned up every night after closing.  [38:40] Calorie Restriction Is A Non-Starter, and It Doesn't Work  The best way to expand lifespan and healthspan is calorie restriction.  However, calorie restriction is a non-starter, and it doesn't work.  Calorie-restricted animals are profoundly hungry.  A study found that the animals with time-restricted eating lived 11% longer than the animals who ate the same amount of food but ate throughout the day.  This concept has been proven in humans as well. [47:05] The Major Health Benefit of Taking MCT Oil or Powder  30% of sheep and goat dairy is MCT.  MCTs are an excellent fat that goes directly to our liver, where they are automatically converted into ketones.  You can have insulin resistance, take MCTs, and generate ketones.  A tablespoon of MCT oil will have you generating adequate amounts of ketones to begin uncoupling mitochondria.  MCTs are easy to take; you can mix them in salad dressing.  Many females have issues with MCT oils and their stomachs, so start slow. Powered MCTs work well for women.  [53:35] You Have Melatonin All Wrong: It May Have Nothing To Do With Sleep  Pistachios actually have the highest melatonin content of any food. The Mediterranean diet gets melatonin from olive oil, red wine, and mushrooms.  Melatonin isn't there to put you to sleep. Instead, it's there to repair mitochondria.  Also, melatonin may be one of the secrets of cancer therapy.  Dr. Gundry has cancer patients on up to 100 milligrams a day of melatonin.  Check out Melatonin The Miracle Molecule: https://www.ultimatecellularreset.com/product/melatonin-the-miracle-molecule/ AND MUCH MORE! So many of us know how important foreplay is but yet it doesn't get a lot of attention. Without adequate foreplay, partners can have feelings of disappointment, feel less than, confused, disconnected if sex did not live up to their expectations. Often, partners carry misinterpretations from porn that sex does not require foreplay, clitoral stimulation or consists of quick penetration, and still have the expectation for ecstatic orgasms. When this doesn't happen in our reality, partners often feel deflated. Foreplay is that important. Some therapists say just 15 minutes of foreplay can increase chances of orgasm. Dr. Kate and Raquel talk about specifics to up the exploration of one another's body parts and bring awareness of foreplay to both partners. Do you know that foreplay can occur in and out of the bedroom? It can start with a text, a hand on your back, helping with a chore, and then hopefully elongate the pleasure of foreplay. Listen to this conversation and get excited about exploring the importance and fun of foreplay. Website: www.modernintimacy.comIG: @drkatebalestrieri and @themodernintimacyTikTok: @drkatebalestrieri and @modernintimacy

Wade being overturned and other misogynistic policies enacted globally that infringe on a uterus owners' right to their body.Bodily autonomy means, "My body is for me; my body is my own." It's about power, and it's about agency. It's about choice, and it's about dignity. This episode of Modern Intimacy talks about a shift in uterus owners knowing Roe v. Wade is overturned and options of putting into effect one's own choices are limited now. Women are feeling unheard, disconnected, anxious, and alone. There is also a question of if they feel supported by their partner. As therapists, the Doctors have been hearing fallout from Roe v Wade, such as how the uterus owner's partner may never understand how helpless they feel.  They may also be looking for empathy for the feeling of having sex being risky now. It has impacted and hindered feeling sexually curious, available and how their partner understands this downshift. There are so many side effects of this decision on women and ultimately it affects their partners as well. We hope this shines a light on these new results from a “no choice” decision. And can help define what you may be experiencing but haven't been able to define where it's coming from. All of this is discussed in this important episode of Modern Intimacy. Yet it has been little studied so in this conversation Shona talks about her research of the phenomenon of emptiness. Shona qualified as a Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology in Scotland before moving to London to undertake her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at University College London. She is currently in her final 6 months of her Doctorate, completing her thesis and working with men who are detained in the High Security Estate, and men in forensic hospital across North London. She adores her ability to combine clinical and research work, and is particularly passionate about tackling oppressive systems, non-diagnostic approaches to mental health challenges and attempting to use the principles of community psychology and narrative approaches in everything she does. https://wellcomecollection.org/articles/YicucRAAAPf45c2S https://theconversation.com/many-of-us-feel-empty-understanding-what-it-means-is-important-for-improving-our-mental-health-163035

Concussion is a confusing, somewhat misunderstood diagnosis that impacts many individuals every day. We have an in-depth conversation about Concussion, to discuss what it is, what happens to individuals who have one and what kinds of things help to cure concussion. One intervention that can really make a difference for those who suffer concussion is Vision Therapy, and the growing field of Behavioural Optometry. We discuss how athletes who play sports with high risk of concussion can be assessed by a Behavioural Optometrist to see how well their visual systems and movement systems are coordinated, before an injury happens. This may indicate concussion suseptibility and may help to decrease the impact of a concussion on this individual. BIO: Dr. Meuller is an Optometrist in Vision Development and Rehabilitation. What you will learn:    This week's episode is one you won't want to miss. I have asked Courtney Pullen to join us and work with me and my parents, Marty and Maureen Palumbos – they hesitantly agreed.  My parents and I have massaged and updated their estate plan for several years.  At a high level the plan is for a portion of their estate to be divided among their four kids, a portion to fund a family foundation and then there is a life insurance trust designed to cover the expenses for Palumbos Family Vacation (PFV) for many years after my parents pass.  They have personally funded PFV for over 20 years as a way for the family to be all together for at least one week a year.    During this year's family meeting, it became evident that potentially not everyone wanted to continue PFV when my parents are gone – there were over 25 family members in attendance this year.  My parents are curious as to how to figure out what they should do and how do they have the conversation with the family.  They know that without a conversation PFV won't last.  So, what's next?    The idea here is to pull back the curtain and give you a glimpse at what good family coaching looks like.  I am removing myself from the advisory role and Courtney will be facilitating the entire conversation…we will see what happens.    Since I just learned in our 30-minute pre-show call that my mother isn't totally happy with their current estate plan, I'm a bit nervous and excited to see where this goes.  Now you know why we are calling this Family “Business” Unscripted.   This week's guests:    Courtney Pullen, M.A.  President, Pullen Consulting Group*    Courtney Pullen M.A. is the President of the Pullen Consulting Group.  He has more than 25 years of experience in individual and family coaching, business and management consulting, leadership development, communication and team building.  Courtney received his graduate degree in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in 1983.  He was a Clinical Associate at the School of Professional Psychology at the University of Denver and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Colorado at Denver.  Courtney also spent 17 years as a Senior Consultant with Conversant Solutions a Communication and Collaboration Consulting firm to Fortune 100 Companies.   Courtney has lectured frequently, conducted numerous workshops and been published in the areas of individual and organizational change, behavioral finance, communication and family wealth dynamics.  He is a former contributing editor to the Journal of Financial Planning and the Journal of Practical Estate Planning and is a faculty member of the Sudden Money Institute.  He also holds Fellow status in the Purposeful Planning Institute and is a graduate of the Newfield coaching program.   He has spoken at regional and national conference of the Financial Planning Association (FPA), National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), Investment Management Consultants Association, (IMCA), and Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), as well as estate planning symposiums and family foundation conferences.  His primary focus is as a consultant to financial services firms and affluent families.  He recently published, Intentional Wealth: How Families Build Legacies of Stewardship and Financial Health.  He is also on CPWA faculty at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.  ----   *Not affiliated with Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp.  CRN-3346680-112520 The content presented is for informational and educational purposes.  The information covered and posted are views and opinions of the guests and not necessarily those of Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp.    Michael Palumbos is a registered representative of Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp. Sensate Focus Exercises Sensate focus is a touching technique for couples or individuals that stimulates the primal part of the brain to enjoy a fully immersive experience with your partner. The technique starts with focusing on temperature, texture and pressure and uses a tactile sensation to move away from distraction. Linda uses the technique for almost everything ranging from low/ no desire, sexual dysfunction, trauma, body image issues to rekindling connection between couples. One Size Doesn't Fit All With each individual experiencing sensation differently, Linda highlights building up sexual tension with touch. From Linda's experience, there is often a need to manage each level as it is approached. She removes conflict and pressure from couples relationships, by taking on the instruction/ control role. Her sessions help couples identify the difference between vulnerability and rejection. How Do You Start With Sensate Focus? With no hard and fast rule, couples can choose certain factors in their environment to ensure that they are at ease eg clothing (or no clothing). Linda's rules include no kissing and no talking. She points out that talking uses the front of the brain and therefore brings individuals back to logic. Linda mentions that the toucher is supposed to touch for their pleasure while the person being touched, needs to experience the touch and provide feedback if something is not comfortable. Obstacles Linda shares that avoidance is one of the main issues that couples encounter. She reveals how she handles this delay tactic fairly. For clients that don't like the technique, she reminds them about the basic three areas of focus temperature, texture and pressure. Partner pressure is an obvious obstacle that Linda notices with her clients. She uses a great analogy to help us accept our differences and move couples through the basic steps at their own pace. Sensate Focus ExercisesSensate focus is a touching technique for couples or individuals that stimulates the primal part of the brain to enjoy a fully immersive experience with your partner. The technique starts with focusing on temperature, texture and pressure and uses a tactile sensation to move away from distraction.Linda uses the technique for almost everything ranging from low/ no desire, sexual dysfunction, trauma, body image issues to rekindling connection between couples. One Size Doesn’t Fit AllWith each individual experiencing sensation differently, Linda highlights building up sexual tension with touch. From Linda’s experience, there is often a need to manage each level as it is approached. Linda’s rules include no kissing and no talking. She points out that talking uses the front of the brain and therefore brings individuals back to logic. Linda mentions that the toucher is supposed to touch for their pleasure while the person being touched, needs to experience the touch and provide feedback if something is not comfortable.ObstaclesLinda shares that avoidance is one of the main issues that couples encounter. How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age: The Longevity Paradox & The 7 Deadly Myths Of Aging

Ben Greenfield Life

My guest on today's podcast and former guest on my show "", Dr. Steven Gundry proposes in his new book "", that the “diseases of aging” we most fear are not simply a function of age; but rather, they are a byproduct of the way we have lived over the decades. In The Longevity Paradox, he maps out a new approach to aging well—one that is based on supporting the health of the “oldest” parts of us: the microorganisms that live within our bodies. He believes that - from diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s to common ailments like arthritis to our weight and the appearance of our skin, these bugs are in the driver’s seat, controlling our quality of life as we age. Dr. Gundry is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Dr. Gundry completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan and served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health. There, he invented devices that reverse the cell death seen in acute heart attacks; variations of these devices subsequently became the Gundry™ Retrograde Cardioplegia Cannula. It has become the world’s most widely used device of its kind to protect the heart from damage during open-heart surgery. After completing a fellowship in congenital heart surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, in London, Dr. Gundry was recruited as Professor and Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. There, he and his partner, Leonard Bailey, pioneered infant and pediatric heart transplantation. Together, they have performed more such transplants than any other surgeons in the world. During his tenure at Loma Linda, Dr. Gundry pioneered the field of xenotransplantation, the study of how the genes of one species react to the transplanted heart of a foreign species. He was one of the original twenty investigators of the first FDA-approved implantable left ventricular assist device (a kind of artificial heart). Dr. Gundry is also the inventor of the Gundry Ministernomy, the widely used minimally invasive approach to aortic- or mitral-valve repair, the Gundry Lateral Tunnel, a “living” tissue that can rebuild parts of the heart in children with severe congenital heart malformations; and the Skoosh™ venous cannula, the most widely used cannula in minimally invasive heart operations. One of the fathers of robotic surgery, as a consultant to Computer Motion (now ), Dr. Gundry received early FDA approval to use robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for coronary artery-bypass and mitral-valve operations. He holds patents on devices for connecting blood vessels and coronary artery bypasses without sutures, as well as for repairing the mitral valve without the need for sutures or a heart-lung machine. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASIAO), and was a founding board member and treasurer of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS). He recently completed two successive elected terms as President of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Desert Division. Dr. Gundry has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the American Surgical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of numerous other surgical and medical societies. He is also the author of more than three hundred articles, chapters, and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals on surgical, immunology, genetic, nutrition, and lipid investigations. He has operated in more than thirty countries, including charitable missions to China, India, and Zimbabwe. Inspired by the stunning reversal of coronary artery disease in an “inoperable” patient, using a combination of dietary changes and nutriceutical supplements, in 2001, Dr. Gundry changed the path of his career. An obese, chronic “diet” failure himself, he adapted his undergraduate Yale University thesis to design a diet based on evolutionary genetic coding, which enabled him to reverse his own medical problems. In the process, he effortlessly lost 70 pounds. The equally astonishing results from following what he came to call Diet Evolution in several of his staff led Dr. Gundry to accept a position in Palm Springs where he could devote his efforts to disease reversal. No longer satisfied with repairing the damage of chronic diseases, since 2002, Dr. Gundry founded and has served as Medical Director of The International Heart and Lung Institute in Palm Springs, California, which serves patients referred from across the nation. He is also Founder and Director of The Center for Restorative Medicine, part of the Institute. Its mission is to prevent and reverse the chronic diseases of “ageing” with diet and nutriceutical interventions, using surgical intervention for heart and vascular disease as a last resort. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The myth of the Mediterranean Diet promoting longevity...11:20 "Blue Zones" is a term coined by a journalist named Dan Bruckner Dr. Gundry has spent most of his life living in a Blue Zone (Loma Linda, CA) Doesn't disagree with the premise you should follow the Mediterranean Diet, but there's more to it... "The only purpose of food is to get olive oil in your mouth" The key to the Mediterranean Diet is not whole grains and beans Book: Residents of Acciaroli, Italy do not eat pasta or bread, but love lentil beans Millet, sorgum, teft do not have a hull (where most of the defense mechanisms of the plant are located) Unprocessed barley: People live a long time in spite of it, not because of it Influence of the Greek Orthodox church on the Mediterranean Diet Fasting and abstaining from animal products are observed during Lent -The missing link in the Mediterranean Diet regarding longevity...20:45 , a compound that is deleterious to the surface of blood vessels Cleveland Clinic invented a test to detect TMAO Recognized low incidence of coronary artery disease in spite of animal product consumption Present in most olive oils, balsamic vinegars and red wines A structural analog of choline Not all TMAO is created equal The ideal Mediterranean Diet (Hint: Olive Garden got it wrong) Rich in polyphenols, olive oil and red wine More fish and eggs than meat Some type of fasting component You can mitigate a bad diet with a fast or fasting mimicking diet for 5 consecutive days Done on a quarterly basis The Carnivore Diet is a fad, fancy name for the Atkins Diet -The carbohydrate Okinawans consume that staves off inflammation and high blood sugar...27:40 ~85% of the traditional Okinawan diet is a blue or purple sweet potato 5-6% of the diet white rice (no brown rice) Remaining soy-based products and pig fat Taro and sweet potatoes are resistance starches "The more we eat for our gut microbiome, the more our gut microbiome will take care of us." Nigerians carry the highest percentage of APO E-4 gene of any people on earth Their starch is melon Very low rate of Alzheimers -Dr. Gundry's thoughts on roughage and fiber intake...35:14  went on a mission to Africa to operate on colon cancer Realized no one had colon cancer Studied their stools Eating huge amount of tubers (yams) and millet Didn't realize there was a difference between soluble and insoluble fiber Advocated for eating whole grains Ended up dying of colon cancer Lives in tunnels in sub-saharan Africa Lives 30x longer than other rats Gut microbiome is identical of healthy 105 year old humans Eats tubers, roots and fungi -The myth of the efficacy of animal protein for longevity...42:45 US Dept of Agriculture sells agricultural products (owns the food pyramid) Vegans live the longest The more animal protein consumed, the less the longevity You can mitigate meat intake with a vegan fast or fasting mimicking diet for 5 days consecutively Methionine/glycine ratio People who are primarily carnivorous do not historically have the highest longevity -The myth of growth hormones...49:20 Loranz people of Ecuador do not have cancer or diabetes When block IGF-1 receptor in mice, live 40% longer When give growth hormones, abolishes effect of calorie restriction Supplement with quercetin -The myth of iron intake for longevity...55:05 Iron is one of the deadliest substances Iron is dangerous for mitochondrial function Regular blood donors have longer life spans than non-donors Endurance training helps reduce iron levels Ferritin and GGT are musts for a blood test to track "internal rust" Ferritin is a great marker for inflammation Elevated level indicates potential auto-immune disease -The myth of metabolic rate...59:50 Age is akin to rate of energy consumption Carnivores run higher temperatures than herbivores; breakdown of protein generates a lot of heat Sweet spot between fitness and low metabolism: Hibernating animals can live 2-3x longer than non-hibernating animals due to reduced metabolic rate There are periods we should have less energy expenditure than others We live in constant summer, regardless of where we live in the world -The myth of saturated fat...1:05:15 Dr. Ancel Keys published the Said saturated fat was related to coronary heart disease He did not say plant fats were bad for you (although it was implied) Retired near Acciorili and ate large amounts of olive oil Did not make the connection between animal fat and animal protein 30% of people carry APO E 4 gene Saturated fats in coconut oil, cheese increase LDL's in these people Mucus absorbs lectins; is essential for gut health in older age -Why milk does not in fact do the body good... Most milk in the US is casein a1 milk, from holstein cows Cow milk is designed to make baby cows grow quickly (lots of IGF1) Humans are designed to grow slowly (low amounts of IGF1) Adolescents who grow quickly have higher chance of cancer in 10-20 years We're the only animal that drinks another animal's milk Ben's kids drink goat and camel milk -And much more... An obese, chronic "diet" failure himself, he adapted his undergraduate Yale University thesis to design a diet based on evolutionary genetic coding, which enabled him to reverse his own medical problems. Its mission is to prevent and reverse the chronic diseases of "ageing" with diet and nutriceutical interventions, using surgical intervention for heart and vascular disease as a last resort. Dr. Gundry lives with his wife, Penny and their four dogs, George, Bella, Black Pearl, and Fanny Foo Foo in Palm Springs and Montecito, California. NYT Bestselling author of The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in "Healthy" Foods That Cause Disease & The Longevity Paradox: How to Die Young At a Ripe Old Age. STEVEN R. GUNDRY, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.C.C., is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. It has become the world's most widely used device of its kind to protect the heart from damage during open-heart surgery. Dr. Gundry is also the inventor of the Gundry Ministernomy, the widely used minimally invasive approach to aortic- or mitral-valve repair, the Gundry Lateral Tunnel, a "living" tissue that can rebuild parts of the heart in children with severe congenital heart malformations; and the Skoosh™ venous cannula, the most widely used cannula in minimally invasive heart operations. One of the fathers of robotic surgery, as a consultant to Computer Motion (now Intuitive Surgical), Dr. He recently completed two successive elected terms as President of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Desert Division.Dr. Half a Life by Strauss; The Instructions by Levin (both books published by McSweeney's) Darin Strauss, author of More Than It Hurts You, will discuss and sign his heartbreaking memoir about how one outing in his father's Oldsmobile during his last month of high school resulted in the death of a classmate and the beginning of a different, darker life for the author. Joining him, Adam Levin will read and sign his new novel, The Instructions, which begins with a chance encounter with the beautiful Eliza June Watermark and ends, four days and 900 pages later, with the Events of November 17; this is the story of Gurion Maccabee, age ten: a lover, a fighter, a scholar, and a truly spectacular talker. Advance praise for Half a Life: “Half a Life is the best anything I've read—novel, memoir, story—in a very long time. Incredibly, it's also the most moving."  —David Lipsky, author of Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself “This book will break your heart. It's a great and moving book about a boy becoming a man, and it belongs on the shelf with just a precious few others—The Catcher in the Rye, The Moviegoer, Joe Gould's Secret. It should be read and re-read. It's a treasure.”  —Rich Cohen, author of Tough Jews and Sweet and Low Advance praise for The Instructions: "A great big novel, shaggy and undisciplined, but with moments of brilliance." —Publishers Weekly "The Instructions is a sizzling fire-cracker of a book. Readers beware: you will not be able to put this book down, you will not be able to get ten-year old Gurion Maccabee's fevered voice out of your head, and you will not be able to read anything else for like six months without thinking back to this book. The Instructions is a thrilling hurricane of an epic—1,000 pages that takes places over a mere four days—and it will chew you up and spit you out and you will be better for it." —Rachel Meier, Booksmith (San Francisco, CA) Darin Strauss is the best-selling author of Chang & Eng, The Real McCoy, and More Than It Hurts You. The recipient of a 2006 Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction writing and -numerous other awards, Strauss's work has been translated into fourteen langauges, and published in over twenty countries.
