What would an ideal mental health system look like? How effective are addiction detox programs? Why might suicide prevention programs backfire? When is it better to see a psychologist than a psychiatrist and vice versa? What are some of the most exciting and most worrying parts of genetic medicine? How should we decide which diseases to study and which treatments to develop? What's an "invisible" victim? Is there any solution to the problem of invisible victimhood? How effective was the Affordable Care Act (AKA "Obamacare")? Are we collectively spending too much money on end-of-life care? How can medicine better incorporate preventive care? What is body integrity disorder? Why do we have such a hard time combating our biases relating to physical beauty? Should polygamy be morally and/or legally permissible? Should medical aid in dying (AKA "assisted suicide") be morally and/or legally permissible? Are doctors too willing to resuscitate dying patients?Jacob M. They became affiliates of AHF in order to take advantage of those capabilities, and in turn allow their patients to access these services to their benefit.[3:49] - Looking Forward to the FutureWhy organizations adopt affiliate roles with AHFBefore joining with AHF, Iris House was at a crossroads. Their leadership was questioning what the future of the organization looked like, and weren't finding success with any of the organizations they were meeting with at the time. How to Split a Toaster: A divorce podcast about saving your relationships
Finding Peace After Your DivorceToday on the Toaster, Seth and Pete are joined by Keith Wilson, a licensed mental health counselor and author of “The Road To Reconciliation: A Comprehensive Guide to Peace when Relationships Go Bad,” and “How to Make an Apology You'll Never Have to Make Again.” How do you forgive after your divorce? What if the other party doesn't want to forgive? Or is forgiveness even what you should be looking for?Keith talks to us about finding peace – not forgiveness – and how you can reconcile when things go bad. It's not an easy process, but it is doable. Part of the challenge is learning to relate to the representative of your former spouse that you have in your head. Part of it is realizing that the relationship with your former spouse needs to be renegotiated – particularly if you have kids.At the start, it may help to list your grievances you have with your ex or soon-to-be-ex. After that, though, try writing up a list of what you think are your problems – the thing your ex perhaps has as grievances toward you. It may seem hard to do, but it can help you toward finding that peace. But sometimes you don't want to forgive. Sometimes your ex doesn't want to forgive. How do you move through the anger toward peace? it's important to move on, and sometimes you need help to do so. You might just need to have a friend or family member drag you into emotional health.Whatever it takes. That's what's key in today's episode. Summary: In today's episodes of The Tragedy Academy, Jay welcomes actress and director Christine Twyman. Chrissy breaks down the concept of trauma and presents a method of healing by art. Christine advocates that through art, we can create a space for trauma intervention.Key Points: Advocating for trauma intervention via artWorking with people who are only interested in the monetaryUnderstanding traumaIntegrating with your traumaRecognizing that it's not our parent's faultMen are oppressing themselvesEpisode Highlights:[00:00:31] Introduction to Christine Twyman [00:03:04] Jay introduces Christine's goal of advocating for trauma intervention via art. She describes this as a society, and there are several issues the prevent people from getting trauma intervention, and one way to receive these interventions is through art. Why? Because art is one of the few things that can connect everyone in some way. [00:06:36] Christine admits filming is a strange medium to create in because it is one of the few spaces where business and politics interject. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to separate them.[00:08:19] Christine makes it known the intent for someone to make art solely for money does not bother her if only they allow her to do what needs to get done.[00:12:12] Christine and Jay give their interpretation of ego. Where ego is more of a persona and how people perceive things.[00:14:04] Christine portrays that we are all traumatized children and confesses that she has grown more as an actor by understanding other people as she learns about herself while she unpacks her life.[00:17:32] Christine confesses her love for writing, even more than acting. Writing is the most exciting thing to do; it releases parts inside of you didn't even know you had.[00:22:11] Christine brings up the topic of violence in mass manipulation. From a young age, both women and men are conditioned to fall into specific gender roles, and if they dare to venture outside of that, there will be repercussions.[00:24:45] Christine tells us the critical role of past traumas how the goal is not to forget about your past but to make amends with it. It's a matter of integrating, not removing. She also shares the many pieces of herself she's learned from unpacking her mental illness.[00:26:57] Christine recognizes that it's not our parents' fault for how they raised us. The generational gap is normal, and it is our duty to create a better world for future generations by bridging those gaps. [00:31:19] Christine breaks down the types of violence in life; 1st violence is physical abuse, and 2nd violence is psychological and emotional. People do not usually quantify emotional violence as violence.[00:33:24] Jay details his life growing up in a disenfranchised area of the south, where people blamed their struggles on each other when they should be blaming the system. Christine labels this as crabs in a barrel.[00:36:00] Christine and Jay agree on the notion that men are oppressing themselves. Men learn that they are not allowed to feel what makes them human. Christine states that to oppress the female class, men have to believe that there's something wrong with them at all. [00:39:34] Christine and Jay discuss the animosity we create within ourselves and how to identify microaggressions, referencing White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo.[00:44:05] Jay gives an anecdote when he passed judgment on a friend who just had his tooth chipped.[00:46:20] Christine gives us a quick rundown of commedia dell'arte, aka SNL 1.0.[00:50:30] Christine and Jay agree on art being a part of evolution. It's a tale as old as time; it's something we need. It creates connections and serves as an outlet for the ego.[00:54:47] Christine and Jay reflect angry pieces of art and what it means to make something with which you disagree. The mental health drop in clinic is now up and running in full swing at RDHS. Anthony comes in to give us an update on how things are running and what you can do should you need to access this clinic.Essentially, it's just rock up on Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9:30am and 1pm or call RDHS Primary Care ahead on 5051 8160.We also managed to get hold of Ali Cupper on a day when Charlie was unavailable for consultation but we did manage to have a chat about the $10million we got for the Robinvale-Sea Lake Road, the Murray Darling Basin Rail Project and the basement of Victorian Parliament House.
Adapt & overcome. While Eric undergoes a studio relocation, Jay & Maria have an episode between their therapy sessions. As you can imagine, the discussion takes on the topics surrounding the humanness that is modern living and mental health. Maria reports how she was under stress about a potential lousy midterm grade that was the opposite. The conversation steers to the worry about outcomes and the pressure that we undertake due to it. A sad trombone sound effect leads to discussing what it would be to have that sound as a morning alarm. Does the day's start with one adverse event have to set the tone for your entire day? The consensus, a single morning event should not set the mood for your whole day leading to more questions. Do we allow things we take in to alter our mental disposition? Does sad music create a melancholy mood in our day? The impact of a daily regimen on a person's ability to get exercise is discussed. Jay seems to think saving up your activity and trying to make it up in an hour at the gym surely can't be the best way to live. The two discuss how we let others' feelings about us dictate our internal feelings. The reality is that everyone is sitting in fear of judgment so much that they barely have time to notice what anyone else is doing. What did your coworkers wear yesterday? The vast majority don't remember what you wore either. We spend valuable headspace, letting our emotions controlled by worry or the sheer potential of judgment.Maria has a beef with her local area's surplus of Dollar Stores. Why are there so many in her neighborhood? Is the only difference between CVS and a dollar sore just knock-off brands? Jay complains about all is poor kid knock off cereals. Maria wants Cocoa Puffs and not "Chocolate Poofies" While Jay overdosed on Golden Grahams shortly after joining the army. Do we fill the holes from our childhood with pleasures today? The two wrap up by making the call that bacon only comes from pigs, and it's a hard no on turkey "bacon."

Produced by KSQD 90.7FM “Be Bold America!” Sunday, June 21, 2020 at 5:00pm What we have been seeing on our streets as protesters or on our television screens, have shown us a dystopian America. We have seen for ourselves a society that is undesirable and frightening. In the past weeks, we have watched the actualization of a world where the state of our society produces great injustice and suffering for large segments of our population. What is “Collective Trauma?” How does it manifest in combat, mass shootings, and from visions of police in riot gear using military force against Americans? This interview will discuss four types of aftereffects and treatment options on mental models, life scripts and interrupting the reflexive loop. How does “Collective Trauma” impact our response to the pandemic? How did “Collective Trauma” affect the rise of white supremacy and privilege? How can understanding “Collective Trauma” assist us in reuniting America and save our democracy? Interview Guests: Pettis Perry, Ph.D. is a full-time faculty member at Walden University where he teaches a variety of leadership and management courses in the Master of Science in Leadership and Master of Science in Management degree programs. For some, higher education is a time of learning and growth. But it’s also a time of stress as students manage assignments, extracurriculars and their lives and relationships outside the classroom. Mental health is also part of the picture; about 1 in 5 Americans age 18 or older are dealing with a mental health condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. MPR News host Kerri Miller led a wide-ranging conversation Feb. 5 at St. Catherine University with college students and a panel of mental health and higher education experts. This was in partnership with Call to Mind, MPR’s initiative to foster new conversations about mental health. Guests: Taiyon Coleman is an assistant professor of English at St. Catherine University. “One of his delusions was that all the doctors treating him were fake doctors. After about two years of therapy, this delusion went away. He later considered that ‘you cannot be a doctor without listening to your patient. If you don’t listen to your patient and try to understand him, you’re a fake doctor.” There was an emotional sense behind the delusions and I think this is what we try to do in psychotherapy.” Description: Harvey Schwartz welcomes Dr. Ilan Amir, who is a psychiatrist and a training and supervising psychoanalyst at the Israeli Psychoanalytic Society and is a lecturer at the Tel Aviv University Psychotherapy Program. Dr. Amir is a founding member and current chair of Lechol Nefesh — which means “for every soul”. This is a program dedicated to the use of psychoanalytic therapies for chronically mentally ill patients in public health settings. This program is equally devoted to the empirical study of the clinical outcome of these therapies. As you will hear in today’s interview, Dr. Amir reveals himself to be an analyst quite capable both of deep immersion in the personal intimacy of long-term clinical treatment of patients, as well as someone who values the careful study of the utility of those treatments. Key takeaways: [3:05] The concept of psycho-dialysis explained by Dr. Ilan Amir through a clinical example. [14:33] Lechol Nefesh and Dr. Ilan Amir’s work. [18:27] Patients needed to commit to come to sessions three times a week for three years. [18:45] Outcome research. [22:29] All patients stopped their hospitalization. [23:31] Realizing the need for intensive and long-term psychotherapy. [24:12] Psychoanalysts’ ability to listen. [25:20] Having faith in therapy. [26:33] The importance of the connection with patients and the understanding of the complexities of each case. [27:18] Why psycho-dialysis? He talks to Ed Andrew about the role of social media in mental health, his passion about learning from every different modality, scientific and experiential. We also discuss his journey into entrepreneurship and how he develops his personal brand internationally. It is a wonderful episode to learn more about alternative therapies and also for anyone whose family member or friend is suffering a mental health problem or abusive relationship particularly in young adults and teenagers.
