The same act already proposed four such vessels to be sold to Taiwan for the same amount as well as giving two to Thailand (and two to Mexico) free of charge.Things had immediately bogged down in the 113th US Congress. It was too easy for Democrats in both Houses to take the President's position that any additional weapons into the South China Sea area would further destabilize the region. The pro-PRC lobby was equally opposed to the bill. Under normal conditions, that would have been good enough to send the measure off to the procedural graveyard.Except in the current contrary nature of the US's chief legislative body, this meant Republicans found themselves drawn to the anything the White House opposed. They could claim they found the anti-Communist, anti-Islamic Extremists stance of the Khanate to be attractive to them though none of them felt the need to actually talk to anyone in the Khanate to find out what they were really all about.We were happy with that policy because true congressional oversight was the last thing we needed. They might start asking uncomfortable questions like...'Who gave you the authority to do any of the crap you pulled?'(No one. If you asked them for anything, they got it for you, danger and consequences be damned. They'd try anything for the men they considered 'brothers in the struggle'. If you were pinned down by fire from a hillside and asked for fire support, they would napalm the whole damn mountain if that was what it took. The man/woman on the other end of that radio cared for your life, not the human rights of the scumbag shooting at you, or any of the people they might be hiding behind.You also know if they couldn't get it done, it was only because the resources didn't exist. The Khanate Special Forces hadn't acted like co-belligerents, or allies. They treated you like their own kin. They would and had died to make sure some of them got home to their families. If ordered to, they would definitely take the fight to the Khanate. I believed many of them would be asking what had it all been for.'We wouldn't dream of it,' Addison lied.'Good. You have your marching orders. Now get to it,' and Tony hung up on us. Everyone in the room was looking around. What exactly were our marching orders? Had I'd missed that part of our conversation?"Well," Fathom sighed, "there is only one thing we can do." I seriously prayed she would ask me to lie to Temujin."Understood," Mehmet nodded. "Somehow we get the Khanate to launch their offensive into Thailand in three days.""Can they do that?" "The Khanate high command isn't going to back down just because we ask them to. I wouldn't if I were them.""What happens if they can't make the three day window?" I asked."Then you call up your blood-brother and ask him to fuck over his nation to save us from lengthy prison sentences, or outright assassination," Fathom smirked."If he says 'no'," I looked into her eyes."That's the real tragedy in all this, he won't," she gave me a comforting look. "He isn't going to leave you hanging in the wind. He'll call off his attack dogs because he isn't the kind of man to fuck you over because it is politically expedient. I'm staking all our lives on that. I always have."The Black Lotus? We'd explain to them the ugly reality that neither of us could afford to be painted into a corner over this Thailand issue. We were doing our best, but our political masters were dead set on making a colossal error and we had to follow through with those directives. The Khanate would do everything in their extensive power to support the Black Lotus and if they could invade in three days with some nebulous chance at success, they would go.The Black Lotus, the entire 9 Clans knew JIKIT had no power except what we finagled from the US and the UK. We had borrowed their resources to accomplish what we'd done. The Black Lotus had profited from some of those operations and both the Khanate and JIKIT would owe them big, but we were good for it. That truism was why they worked with us.My personal problem was that I knew the Great Khan would not forgive, or forget this interference by the US. It wasn't in his nature. Worse, the politicians and bureaucrats in Washington would see this as a victory and an expression that the US remained the globe's premier super power. Too few would remember the price of this sense of superiority would be born on the back of Thailand's masses. The revolution would fail after a short, brutal civil war. The tyrant would remain in power and the voice of the Thai people would be stilled.The end result of that late night phone call? We weren't told.What follows is pure conjecture on my part, fueled by intelligence information provided by other JIKIT resources and knowledge about how much the political landscape of Southeast Asia had been transformed by the PCR being driven back to their own coastline, leaving a power vacuum India, Vietnam and the Khanate were eager to fill.The Republic of China/Taiwan --'Aren't you the same people who said only a week ago that sending more weapons into the region would only escalate tensions? That would be that big island off the coast of, yes, we have indeed suspected you could read a map.At the moment we are expecting the permission of the Khanate to use Woody Island as a forward staging area and logistic base to help us do just that. Take Hainan, yes, that large island currently, and temporarily, under the illegal occupation by those illegitimate bastards in Beijing.What do you mean 'don't declare war on them'? Just in case.In the end, Secretary Kerry gave POTUS what he asked for.The Philippines would let them use their country's bases for logistics and strategic assets (aka bombers).The ROC would extend their air umbrella out 200 km to the east, south and west, acting like a shield between the Khanate and US Pacific assets moving through the tight Formosan Straits.Malaysia gave them an airbase from which they could strike into Thailand, or Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The US Air Force would have the opportunity to be lethally effective.Had they known the sum total of the US commitment, they would have been appalled. In Part One, we looked at some of the elements we need to be working on in providing excellent customer service, and so now let's continue. 1. Friendly This would seem to be a very basic requirement in customer service, but often the wrong people are placed in these roles and many of them don't like people.  Even those who do like people can suffer brutal invective from irate customers and this can impinge on their joy for the work.  In Japan, the land of the “customer is God”, we now see legislation against harassment of workers by customers.  Dogeza is where you get down on your knees and bow by putting your head on the floor and is the ultimate sign of apology in Japan.  In Chinese culture, we know it as the ‘kowtow”.  Angry customers have been known to force staff to do the dogeza to apologise for the unsatisfactory service they have provided. It would be very hard to be friendly after being put through that experience.  Japan is catching up in this regard and these types of outbursts will reduce as the system stops tolerating unbridled rage by customers. 2. Develop loyal fans This is related to being friendly. The idea is to not just provide a great one-off service, but to enroll the customers as repeaters and make them loyal fans.  All sales should have this as the goal.  In Japan, though, we receive aloof, but polite service.  Those serving see their role in the dimension of providing the good or service, and that is it.  There are very few cases where the person serving is trying to establish a connection with the customer and encourage them to come back.  Maybe they think that is the job of the marketing department and nothing to do with them. There are many instances where I frequent the same establishment, but the service is never personalised.  It is efficient and polite, but impersonal. I am treated just like everyone else, and there is no recognition that you are a regular.  Notable exceptions would be Ali Bab and Lindo near my office in Akasaka, Shinsen Hanten in Nagatocho and Elios Locanda in Hanzomon, but they are rare cases. How hard is it to recognise regulars?  Not very.  All the staff have to do is say “thank you for coming back, what can I do for your today”.  I love Princi from Milano in T-Site in Daikanyama, go there very regularly and five years later, I am still waiting for the day they recognise me as a loyal customer. Obviously, in most cases, there is no training or guidance for this, so it is always by the manual and we the customer are left feeling flat.  3. Immediately responsive Customers are all busy all the day long and they hate wasting their valuable time.  Service provision, which is slow or late, is particularly a problem in this high-speed world we inhabit today.  When there are problems, we want them fixed fast because we are losing time by not having the good or service work as we expected.  I ordered some deodorant on Amazon and was contacted by Japan Post to tell me the package was wet, which meant there had been some interior damage.  I went online and registered a problem and I was very happy to immediately hear from the supplier that they would refund my money and they told me to not accept the package.  I was mentally bracing for trouble, prevarication, quibbling, and fudging, but their instant response was better than my low expectation. I was very happy, and that is the same with all of us – we want things fixed and fast. Staff need to be trained to provide it 4. Never combatative I hate one thing in particular and I have hated it my whole life, and that is being told “no”.  I am sure I am not the only customer who is like that.  One of the great ways of telling a customer “no” is to reference third parties.  When I was at the Shinsei Bank, sometimes the customers would want us to do something which was not possible.  Banking, by the way, is a highly regulated industry with tomes of rules.  If we said “no, we can't do that”, then to someone like me, that is a red rag to a bull and I will tell you the thousand reasons why it has to be a “yes”.  Instead, we would firstly agree that we could do it.  Then we would pause, reflect in an obvious way and then ask the customer what do we do about the Financial Services Agency (FSA) rule that prohibits that action.  Now we have said “yes” at first, so they are relieved and their guard is down. Next, we have made it a problem between them and the FSA and not with us.  Third-party direction works well if you can access it. 5. Seeking win-win outcomes Win-win is an obvious best solution, but many systems are not designed that way.  This forces the staff into confrontation with the customer and it creates unnecessary tensions.  Staff training will not easily overcome a structural problem.  Take a good look at your internal rules and systems and see if they are designed in a way to be a “lose” to the customer and a “win” to the firm. Change them or improve them if possible. 6. No excuses Highly litigious cultures like the US are hard wired to never admit guilt or responsibility, which can drive the customer nuts.  There are also some personalities who cannot admit being wrong and will try some mealy-mouthed lingustic gymnastics to avoid taking accountability.  I hate these types of people in any form.  As the customer we don't want excuses. We want soutions, compensation or retribution.  We want you to fix the problem and we want it now.  Again, this is about how we train and empower people.  The Ritz-Carlton Hotel chain is famous for giving staff a certain amount of money they can right off to keep the customer happy. It works, as I have experienced firsthand.  I was staying in their Washington DC property and I went down for breakfast at the 6.30am opening time but the waiter apologised that they were not ready yet.  I said “no problem, I will just sit by the window over there and read my paper”.  He later came and told me they were now ready.  When I went to pay, the waiter said “complements of the Ritz Carlton because we have inconvenienced you by making you wait”.  That was service, I thought, and here I am telling all and sundry about it, for them, years later.  In Part Three will wrap up this look at Outstanding Customer Service.

Arī mūziklu vēsturē un šodienā pastāv aizspriedumi par šo žanru: tas jau tāds lēts, lipīgu melodiju šovs vien ir. Un nav jau tālu no patiesības – daudzi mūzikli patiešām tika radīti izklaidei, lai, piemēram, pagājušā gadsimta karu ēnā dzīvojošie kaut uz stundu varētu aizmirst savu trauksmi, ko ģeopolitiskā situācija radīja ikviena iedzīvotāja dzīvē. Taču paralēli izklaidējošiem mūzikliem tika radīti arī tādi, kas ar neaptveramu simboliku un zemtekstiem iemieso konkrētās desmitgades sociālo, politisko un visādi citādi cilvēka dzīvē svarīgo. Viens no šādiem darbiem ir Stīvena Sondheima (Sondheim) 80. gadu mūzikls "Reiz mežā" ("Into the Woods") pēc Džeimsa Lapina (Lapin) lugas ar tādu pašu nosaukumu. Mūziklā satiekas tādi labi pazīstami pasaku tēli kā Pelnrušķīte, Džeks (ar garo pupu), Sarkangalvīte un Vilks, Salātlapiņa un Ragana, kā arī ne viens vien izskatīgs Princis. Divi jauni tēli – Maiznieks un Maizniece –, ir galvenie un vienojošie tēli šajā stāstā, un katram no tiem ir sava vēlme: Maiznieks un Maizniece cer ieņemt bērniņu, Pelnrušķīte vēlas apmeklēt Karaļa balli, bet Džeks cer, kaut viņa labākā draudzene, gotiņa, būtu spējīga viņam un mammai gādāt pienu. Kad Maiznieks un Maizniece uzzina, ka viņu neveiksmīgie centieni ieņemt bērniņu saistīti ar Raganas lāstu, abi dodas avantūrā, lai to lauztu. Visticamāk, pasaku pievilcība slēpjas to komforta pilnajā būtībā: pasakas rada tādas pasaules, kurās pastāv tikai labs un ļauns, pareizs un nepareizs, balts un melns… Tikums tiek turēts augstā godā, savukārt netikums – tiek sodīts, karstākās vēlmes piepildās un princis ierodas glābt princesi. Lai gan arī šajos stāstos tiek atspoguļota vardarbība, vientulība, nāve, galvenie varoņi, "labie", vienmēr uzvar un mūžam dzīvo laimīgi. Man nav jums jāstāsta, ka pieaugšanas procesā dzīve kļūst krietni sarežgītāka un neparedzamāka. Taču šī pāreja: no fantastikas uz realitāti, no bērnības uz pieaugušu vecumu, no atkarības uz pilnīgu brīvi ir mūzikla "Reiz mežā…" pašā pamatā. Mūzikla pirmās daļas beigās visu galveno varoņu vēlmes un cerības ir piepildījušās: Pelnrušķīte ir kopā ar savu princi, Džeks atgūst savu gotiņu, Maiznieks un Maizniece kļūst par vecākiem utt. Bet kas nāk pēc leģendārajiem vārdiem "un viņi dzīvoja ilgi un laimīgi”? Mūzikla otrajā un, manuprāt, svarīgākajā daļā, mežā atgriežas milzis, kurš gatavs izpostīt un nogalināt visu, kas stājas tam ceļā. Pelnrušķītes Princis savukārt atrod mīlestību citās sievietēs, bet Maiznieks un Maizniece nevar beigt strīdēties. Neviens tā īsti laimīgi nemaz nedzīvo… Bet ko šis mūzikls ar to cenšas mums pateikt? Pirmkārt un galvenokārt tas ceļo pa vecāku un bērnu attiecību sarežģītajiem līkločiem un runā par nepieciešamību bērnu pareizajā brīdī "palaist" lielajā pasaulē. Ragana savu meitu, Salātlapiņu, 14 gadus turējusi ieslodzījumā un šobrīd jaunajai sievietei ir ap 20 gadu. Te pēkšņi viņas māte uzzina, ka Salātlapiņa satikusi Princi un vēlas ar viņu doties pasaulē. Viņa kļūst nekontrolējami nikna. Un ne jau par vīrieša ienākšanu meitas dzīvē, bet gan to, ka Salātlapiņa ir atļāvusies satricināt Raganas tik rūpīgi celto mūri ap meitu. Salātlapiņa vairs nav bērns, viņa vēlas redzēt pasauli, bet Ragana vairākas reizes sauc “bērni neklausa!” un ir pārāk satraukta par pasaulē esošajiem vilkiem, lāčiem un cilvēkiem, lai redzētu to, ka pasaulē ir arī zaķi, stirnas un prinči. Bailes no kontroles zaudēšanas pār kādu var novest pie neparedzētām sekām un, par spīti savām bailēm, bērna sargāšana no pasaules var nodarīt tieši pretējo – tā var nodarīt bērnam pāri. Vai atminaties Raganas izsaucienu "Bērni neklausa!"? Šī ir galvenā mūzikla vadtēma, kas viscaur stāstam vēstī, ka "bērni neklausa" un "bērniem ir jāklausa". Taču mūzikla finālā šis epitets pārtop par "bērni dzird", "bērni ieklausās". Amerikāņu televīzijas kanāla HBO 2013. gadā uzņemtajā dokumentālajā filmā "Six by Sondheim" ("Seši Sondheima darbi"), Stīvens Sondheims atklāti runā par savām sarežģītajām attiecībām ar māti, jo bērnībā cietis no verbālas vardarbības. Neviens stāsts nerodas tukšā vietā un ir skaidrs, ka pasaka "Reiz mežā…" ir ja ne biogrāfiska, tad Sondheima pieredzes alūzija gan. Mūzikla pēdējā dziesma aicina būt uzmanīgiem ar to, ko sakām, jo bērni ieklausās. Tā aicina pievērst uzmanību savai uzvedībai, jo bērni arī novēro. Un tā vēstī, ka, neatkarīgi no mīļo cilvēku atrašanās vietas, tu nekad neesi viens. Maizniece noslēgumā vēsta, ka cilvēki pusceļā mežam mēdz mūs pamest. Viņa aicina neļaut tam sevi pazudināt, jo neviens cilvēks neizgaist pavisam,” tādējādi liekot mums saprast, ka mežs šajā stāstā ir metafora dzīvei. Dažādie, sarežģītie pasaku varoņu piedzīvojumi mežā patiesībā ir grūtības ar kurām sastopamies augot, pieaugot, pieredzot un cilvēka dzīvi dzīvojot.

Like many of the other Reserve locations, this 23,000-square-foot, three-floor store will feature cocktails, elevated bites from Princi and exclusive coffee drinks, as well as classes, workshops and tasting flights. While Starbucks has several Reserve stores and bars currently open in New York City, this upcoming Empire State Building store will be one of the largest — rivaling the flagship Reserve Roastery location in Chelsea. It will be the only store to feature Starbucks’ new brewing method, born out of the company’s R&D team: cold-pressed espresso, which “uses cold water and gentle, upward pressure to unlock a softer, sweeter espresso shot, similar to a slow-steeped cold brew" but will not have a coffee roaster on site. On the same day that Starbucks announced the opening of the new Reserve store, staff at the flagship Roastery went on strike to protest the corporation’s lack of response to “urgent health and safety conditions” at the store, including allegations of bedbugs and black mold. The Starbucks Roastery store unionized in April of this year after a National Labor Relations Board election. The Roastery joins the Williamsburg Starbucks Reserve location in Brooklyn, which similarly went on strike earlier this month “in response to the company’s unilateral changes to benefits and store hours without bargaining.” Plus, catch up on all the top news of the day with our daily news recap at the beginning of each episode.
