Vânia também é autora de de The Presidential Elections of Trump and Bolsonaro, Whiteness, and the Nation (2022), entre outros livros.

The Key shares Inside Higher Ed's latest collaboration with Times Higher Education – Campus Podcast. This interview features Montclair State University President Jonathan Koppell as he discusses how universities can be more proactive in rebuilding public trust in higher education. It's tied to accessibility and degree completion, he argues, and universities need to acknowledge their failures in meeting those objectives. Meanwhile, service learning and supporting minoritized groups are central to Dr. Koppell's institutional strategy. And with many institutions in the US facing financial difficulties, he discusses his decision to merge Bloomfield College into the Montclair system.

Watch the video recording of this podcast on Campus    Findings from a recent Gallup survey of Americans found that only 36 per cent have a "great deal" or "quite a lot of" confidence in higher education. That's about 20 percentage points lower than the same survey in 2015. For Jonathan Koppell, president at Montclair State University, it's time for universities to own their part in that loss of trust in American higher education. The big question universities need to ask themselves is: What are we doing to change the modus operandi to make it easier for people to get the dream universities are selling them, i.e.: get a degree, have a better life?  In this interview Dr Koppell  discusses accessibility to higher education for minoritised groups as well as the merger with Bloomfield College and how the affirmative action ruling will change the higher education landscape. The Presidential Elections of Trump and Bolsonaro, Whiteness, and the Nation (Lexington Books, 2021) is a sociological analysis of the similarities between the elections of Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, based on biographies, academic sources, newspaper, television, and internet reports published in the United States and Brazil between 2014 and 2021. The author argues that the success of each candidate reflects the racially hierarchical structure of their societies and the strength of the ideology of White supremacy to maintain that structure despite efforts to dismantle it. Regardless of class and gender, Whites responded to Trump's nativist call to exclude undesirable immigrants, especially Mexicans and Muslims, both of whom are racialized as non-White.In Brazil, the country with the largest population of African descent outside of Africa and the largest miscegenation rates in the world, the votes for Bolsonaro pointed to the social wish to achieve Whiteness and thus eliminate (or at least abate) the insecurity that comes from a belief in the racial inferiority of non-Whites. The author suggests that the results of the presidential elections reflect Whites' fear of losing ground after decades of gains by minorities, women, and the poor in both countries. “Time is growing short.” That's how Bloomfield College's president, Marcheta P. Evans, described the struggling private college's situation this week in an atypical plea for help. Bloomfield, whose students are overwhelmingly black, Hispanic and from low-income backgrounds, acknowledged that it won't make it through the 2022-23 academic year in its current condition, and asked for help from potential philanthropists and partner institutions to keep its mission alive. In this week's episode, Marcheta Evans discusses the New Jersey college's unexpected approach to an increasingly common plight. She explains why it chose to go public about a situation many institutions hide, and it's options for surviving and even thriving. This week's other guest is Barbara Brittingham, president emerita of the New England Commission of Higher Education, who as leader of the accrediting body in the demographically challenged Northeast encountered more than her fair share of financially ailing institutions. This episode is hosted by Inside Higher Ed Co-founder and Editor Doug Lederman. Sponsor is Formstack

In this 20th anniversary tribute to the victims and survivors of the 9/11 attacks, we will be speaking with three individuals, Neil, Amy and Marty who will share how their lives were directly impacted by the events of that day. Neil's story - Neil was working at his office on the 35th floor of the North Tower of the WTC when the first plane struck his building. Amy's story - Amy was a student at Bloomfield College in northern New Jersey when she received a misdirected call from a WTC survivor who was desperately trying to reach loved ones. This episode features Michelle Chase, who joins us to discuss her fascinating new book, Revolution Within the Revolution: Women and Gender Politics in Cuba, 1952-1962 (University of North Carolina Press, 2015). The book is a rich and nuanced history of women's participation in the movements of resistance that began in the immediate aftermath of Fulgencio Batista's coup d'etat in 1952—resistance that culminated in the overthrow of Batista in the Cuban revolution of 1959. Eschewing both official top-down narratives of women's liberation as well as anti-communist accounts of women's cooptation, Revolution Within the Revolution demonstrates that women's activism and leadership was critical at every stage of the revolutionary process. It also centers urban activism in the years leading up to the Cuban Revolution, and reveals how focusing on the city changes our understanding of how the Revolution evolved and triumphed. What's more, the book is also a history of how notions of gender roles in Cuba at midcentury—questions of marriage and family, of masculinity and femininity—were both defined by and came to define the revolutionary moment, dialectically shaping the strategy of both revolutionaries and counter-revolutionaries, men and women alike. Michelle Chase is an Assistant Professor of History at Bloomfield College, where she teaches courses on Latin American and Caribbean History and World History.
