Not Quite Dead
Based Vampirification: A Not Quite Dead Audio Essay

Not Quite Dead

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 3, 2024 16:12

Hey folks! Something a bit different this week. Last year, I got quite a lot of interest in the idea of me talking about my relationship with existing vampire media, queer readings of those vampires, and how those things contributed to the creation of Not Quite Dead. Mild Spoiler Warnings for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight, Dracula, Interview with the Vampire and Underworld. Based Vampirification is me discussing the various pieces of vampire media that set me down the path which would eventually lead to the conception of Not Quite Dead. It involves tenuous leaps, stretched interpretations and deeply personal readings of the texts in question, all informed by many years of academic literary study and not-so-academic vampire brain rot.Transcript available here: https://hangingslothstudios.com/based-vampirification/ Or here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AZ0aYTVZ9j_FL1OBoNQAlfWUoPsPQxAAKaYqssHe_Ns/editIf you're intrigued to take a slightly more scholarly jaunt into this subject matter, here are some things which I think make for a great jumping off point. There's a range of things listed here, including a fun video essay, some non-academic articles and an academic paper:‘The trail of blood : queer history through vampire literature' https://louis.uah.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1220&context=uah-theses‘Vampires Are Us' https://glreview.org/article/vampires-are-us/‘Closet and Coffins: The Queer-Coded History of Vampires and Representation' https://ohiofusion.com/closet-and-coffins-the-queer-coded-history-of-vampires-and-representation/‘Vampiric Seduction and Vicissitudes of Masculine Identity in Bram Stoker's Dracula' https://www.jstor.org/stable/40347238 ‘Twilight' (a video essay) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqloPw5wp48 Hosted on Acast. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 27, 2023 is: vicissitudes • vuh-SISS-uh-toodz • noun plural The word vicissitudes usually refers to events or situations that occur by chance. It can also apply specifically to the difficulties or hardships, usually beyond one's control, that are commonly encountered in a life, career, etc., or simply to the quality or state of being changeable. // Capricorns are often described as persistent, down-to-earth strivers, unlikely to be thrown off by the vicissitudes of life. See the entry > Examples: “Picture a majestic coniferous forest. The hierarchy in scale and time is pine needle, tree crown, patch, stand, whole forest, and biome. The needles change annually with the seasons. The tree crowns over several years. The patch after many decades. The stand every hundred years or so. The forest over a thousand years. And the biome over tens of thousands of years. The different layers allow the entire system to roll with the vicissitudes and stresses of crowding, parasites, weather, disease, and fire. Continuity is maintained without sacrificing adaptation.” — Jacob L. Taylor, SeekingAlpha.com, 28 Oct. 2022 Did you know? In one entry of his nine-volume biography of Walt Whitman's later years, Horace L. Traubel quotes the Good Gray Poet remarking on an in-process manuscript: “If we keep pegging away slowly but persistently, the book must in the end come out—if I should last, and I guess I will. But we mustn't crow until we've left the last limit of the woods behind us—till we're clean out into the open. The vicissitudes are many—the certainties few.” Whitman's reflection sheds some light on vicissitudes (the singular form vicissitude is rare but also extant), a word that can refer simply to the fact of change, or to instances of it, but that often refers specifically to hardships or difficulties brought about by change. To survive “the vicissitudes of life” is to survive life's ups and downs, which is more than worth sounding one's “barbaric yawp” about over the roofs of the world. The word is a descendant of the Latin vicis, meaning “change” or “alternation.”

DESCRIPTION The collapse of the Duvalier dictatorship in 1986 gave rise to optimism among Haitians in all walks of life—to hopes for a democratic journey leading to economic development, political renewal, and social peace. The reality of the subsequent years, however, has not been so sanguine. Robert Fatton analyzes the vicissitudes of politics in Haiti from the demise of Duvalier through the events of 2001. Despite a relatively stable period since Jean Bertrand-Aristide assumed the Haitian presidency for the second time, in 1994, Fatton reveals a country in which the imperfect trappings of liberal democracy coexist with violent struggles to monopolize the few sites of public power with any access to wealth and privilege. Haiti's Predatory Republic, while recognizing the possibilities of a happier future, tells a somber story of an apparently endless transition to democracy. Key Insights:The only way to buy insurance against the fiscal theory of the price level’s becoming relevant for the inflation outlook is to keep Trump and Trumpists out of officeWe have one political party that could well, someday, turn us inflation-wise into “Argentina”: the Republicans. But thankfully we have only one such political party.Democrats need to develop a policy framework for a time of inflation: capacity-building progressivism. We do not yet know whether what the Fed has done is sufficient to return inflation to its 2%/year Core PCE target. If the Fed overdoes inflation fighting, we might well find ourselves back at the zero lower bound on interest rates—and that would be a hell of a mess, much worse than having Core PCE inflation at 5%/year for an extra year or so.Hexapodia!References:Olivier Blanchard: Inflation and unemployment. Optimists are those dismayed when God permits circumstances that are not rose garden-ish. Pessimists are those dismayed when He permits circumstances that are. And yet in his great and lengthy sermon, Jesus said: “…your Father in heaven … loves each of us – good and evil, kind and cruel. He causes the sun to rise and shine on evil and good alike. He causes the rain to water the fields of the righteous and the fields of the sinner.” from Matthew 5, VOICE. Someone has noted that, in life, the only constant is change. How we respond to those variations, those vicissitudes, is largely determined by the depth of intimacy we enjoy in our relationship with our Father in heaven.

We are barraged with messages—external and internal—about “velocity,” about how fast or slow things should be done/we should be moving/others should respond/etc.  We bemoan things that don't happen quickly enough while decrying the pressure to produce something quickly.  We're frustrated with personal awareness that we are “slowing down” and frustrated too with some changes that seem to happen far too quickly.  (There's even the old George Carlin quip: “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”)   In this Sunday's service, our minister, Jay Leach, and Lay Service Leader Jolena James-Szanton will reflect on the admixture of all of these messages about “velocity.”  In part they'll remind us that not all messages are heard the same way by everyone and will point up how history and culture have had different expectations about “velocity” for different people.   Interwoven through this service, John Herrick will offer a lovely composition by Beethoven that will itself demonstrate a variance in “velocity,” a theme offered with varying aspects of complexity and tempo.     Many thanks to all who are making and keeping generous pledges to our shared community.  It is your generosity that makes what we offer possible.

Ha publicado: No Lost Certainties to be Recovered; Reflections on the Aesthetic Experience - Psychoanalysis and the Uncanny; Concerning the Nature of Psychoanalysis: The Persistence of a Paradoxical Discourse. Asimismo ha editado: The British School of Psychoanalysis - The Independent Tradition; The Dead Mother: The Work of André Green. This podcast is produced by International Psychoanalytical Association www.ipa.world .
