His football story is like many others: a star high school athlete who receives multiple college scholarships offers, gets into the NFL as an undrafted NFL free agent and is out of the league in a year or so. His personal story is unlike anyone else's: before his senior year at Gateway High School in Aurora, a bullet entered and exited his neck in a movie theatre. The bullet came from the theatre next door where a horrific tragedy left 12 people dead. Zack Golditch did not allow July 20, 2012 to deter his football goals or his new aspiration to be a first responder. The offensive lineman had committed to Colorado State University just 8 days prior to the shooting. He loved playing for the Rams and was named First Team All Mountain West his senior year. His NFL career was short but he rolled with the punches on four different teams his rookie season. He was out of the NLF after training camp his second year. Then Zack started his next mission: to be a firefighter and give back to his community. He's currently a South Metro Firefighter and has helped the 7/20 Foundation start the Hero's Journey 5K in Aurora every July to raise money for a scholarship fund benefiting first generation college students from Aurora Public Schools. To donate to Zack's scholarship fund, visit Aurora Public Schools Foundation and specify Zack Golditch Scholarship in the notes.

Host: Drifter Guest: Marie   Hey, all… My name is Marie. I am a recovering alcoholic. Notice that I didn't say my name is Marie and I'm a recovering alcoholic. It's not part of my title. It's just a piece of who I am. I am a retired teacher of Aurora Public Schools in Aurora Colorado of 28 years and retired in June 2021 after teaching through Covid. 25 of those years was at a high school in Aurora Called Hinkley High School. Urban education at its finest. If you know anything about Aurora Colorado, you may remember the theater shooting that happened years ago. That theater is 2 miles from this high school and I lost two of my former students that night in that shooting. I love to tell my story, because I believe in telling it, it keeps the shame and guilt away. God is doing amazing things in my life. And I hope and believe that it will help others. I have ADHD,I have had serious bouts of anxiety and panic. I'm a recovering Southern Baptist, and I am a Christian woman. I have a son who I am proud to say is one of my biggest supporters in life. I have put that kid through hell sometimes and he has stood by my side, holding my hand telling me he loves more than I'll ever know. I am the founder and Director of Colorado's pop rock choir. We started in September 2022 and we raised over $5000 to three area high schools who are hard hit by Covid and the result of not many students being in a program coupled with funding being slashed. I got the chance to perform and direct with rock Choir, Colorado and we performed Carnegie Hall in April 2022. I've also had the pleasure of conducting at red rocks, and in August we will be singing the national anthem at the Colorado Rockies game. I am a judge for the Colorado all-state choir. This summer I will be offering a free two week all-state choir prep camp for students in Aurora Public schools with the help of my choir members. I teach life skills through music, and I tell my stories openly and share my vulnerabilities. Whether you have an addiction or not, we can all learn from each other. We come from all walks of life, and together we are always stronger. Between a Bible study, my choir, trauma therapy, AA, the Bible, and God himself, I am a recovering alcoholic. And I will continue on this journey, and share my story, because there is hope. I know there is hope, because I am living it, and I am living proof that having faith and a higher power will result in an amazing journey you had no idea was in front of you.   No Sippy No Slippy. Brooke O”Drobinak and Beth Kelley join PEBC's Phenomenal Teaching Podcast with Michelle Morris Jones to share perspectives and practices to help educators 'make it to Monday” during this incredibly challenging time. First and foremost, it is important to recognize that we are in the midst of a “mental health tsunami” and all of our feelings, reactions, and actions are NORMAL as we are all processing stress and trauma in different ways and at different times. Some days we might feel great and have tons of efficacy and energy to burn; while other days we might find ourselves quite low and culling through the Help Wanteds. Nervous systems are taxed, reserves are depleted and many educators are finding that there is no resolution to the stress cycle, in other words it feels like there is no time for rest. So what can we do? Educators can beat the stress cycle by reestablishing community, practicing prioritization, and making time for rest or rejuvenation At school we can slow down and cut back, practice prioritization by not adding more initiatives, and invest in creating meaningful connections with colleagues and students. Teachers and students are learning how to “do school” all over again and that takes a lot of energy and grace. At the personal level, we must prioritize our health and take care of our bodies so that we can show up as the most effective educators we can be. This might include incorporating a mindfulness practice, tapping into opportunities to be creative, getting more sleep, finding time for movement or tending to one's diet with more focus than before. Give yourself permission to rest! Pump the brakes!!! Thinking About Creating a Self Care Plan? Check out this guide. Thinking About Cultivating a Mindset of Possibility for yourself or colleagues? Check out this checklist. Beth Kelley, MA, LPC, is a psychotherapist, who spent most of her 18 year career in schools working as a school-based therapist. Additionally she owned a private practice, worked in community mental health, and as a clinical supervisor. Currently, Beth is a consultant for schools and organizations interested in deepening their commitment to caring for their most precious resource, their people...by developing more holistic, relationship based, human centered models. Brooke O'Drobinak, MA, has been in education for more than 25 years at various levels. She is currently working in Aurora Public Schools. She served in school administration for the prior 13 years at a high-functioning, inner-city Denver high school. Her work is founded on the belief that students and relationships are at the heart of school communities. She also deeply values the critical roles that professional learning and leadership play in supporting all students, and their teachers.

Jailyn Jenkins believes that each and every learner deserves lifeworthy conversations that promote community and deepen content understanding. Jailyn joined Michelle Morris Jones on the Phenomenal Teaching Podcast to unpack the PEBC Teaching Framework and specific ways in which teachers can promote student discourse that is meaningful, culturally responsive and sustaining, and inclusive of all voices. First and foremost, we must invest in building relationships with students and establishing rituals and routines that promote talk in our classrooms. This involves examining our internal biases and beliefs about who's holding the power and knowledge and who gets to have a voice. Laying the groundwork for rich and lifeworthy discourse begins on day one by engaging students in conversations about their lives and interests as well as content. This creates an expectation that each and every student has something to say that is valuable. When planning for discourse Jailyn considers: Lifeworthy Topics: What matters for students? How can you build a bridge between content standards and life outside of school? Intentional Planning: What do you want students to talk about and how will that build community or understanding? How are you going to scaffold the conversation for student success? Multiple Entry Points: Can everyone contribute something to the conversation in some way? What modes of discourse or languages are students able to use to express their ideas? Open-Ended Questions: Are questions crafted in a way that promotes critical thinking or are they designed to elicit a particular response? In what ways can students explore the “how” and “why” rather than the “what” or “who?” In closing, Jailyn encourages us to double down on lifeworthiness by building authentic relationships with students, expressing creativity that leads to innovation, and putting ourselves in the seats of students. Jailyn Jenkins, "Educator, Advocate, Wellness Enthusiast" teaches science, facilitates professional learning opportunities, and serves as an instructional coach in Aurora Public Schools. Jailyn has a Bachelor's in Education from ASU and a Masters in Education Administration from GCU. She is a Denver native, loves adventure, trampoline parks, and just about anything that brings joy! Follow her on Instagram @Ms.Jenkins.Science The "Phenomenal Teaching Podcast" is brought to you by Public Education & Business Coalition (PEBC) and is intended to elevate the strands of the PEBC Teaching Framework which is illustrated in Wendy Ward Hoffer's book, Phenomenal Teaching. Thank you for joining us this season as we strive to elevate the stories of educators who are making schools and classrooms more phenomenal than ever before by implementing community, planning, workshop, thinking strategies, discourse, and assessment strategies that promote agency, equity, and understanding.

Formal charges are pending and case documents and attorney information were not immediately available.   Sheriff John Gallowich said that shortly after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, deputies were informed that a man had threatened to kill “potheads”. When a deputy arrived, the man could be seen in his home, holding what appeared to be a handgun.   Gallowich alleged the suspect pointed the weapon at the deputy, who took cover and summoned help.   Other GCSO deputies arrived, securing the area with assistance from Mt. Crested Butte Police Department, Colorado State Patrol and the Gunnison Police Department K-9 unit.   For safety reasons, the highway was closed at about 6 p.m. Fortener surrendered shortly after 12 a.m. on Thursday and the highway reopened about 30 minutes after that.   To find out more about this story visit us at montrosepress.com.     Now, some local history. The nearest town is actually Ridgway which can be seen from its position on the mesa.   The town is covered in large Ponderosa Pine trees, piñons and junipers. Wildlife is abundant with a fairly large population of Mule Deer, Elk, Bobcats, Lynxes, Black Bears, wild turkeys and an occasional sighting of mountain lions. Almost 1,000 feet higher than Ridgway, the types and sizes of flora vary greatly. For example, Aspen trees are seen here and there on the mesa, as opposed to the lower Ridgway valley where they are scarce.   -   Before we go, a quick announcement on an upcoming vaccine clinic...   Montrose County School District and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are collaborating to host a COVID vaccination clinic at Montrose High School on Wednesday, September 1 from 3 to 6 p.m.   The school district is focused on pre-registering students and parents with a goal of 100. Parents will need to provide consent for children under the age of 18.   The CDPHE is funding and operating the clinic, which will be distributing the two-dose Pfizer vaccine. Another event is scheduled four weeks later for the second dose.   And while many employers — including Walmart, the Pentagon and Aurora Public Schools — have already mandated vaccines for some workers, the Montrose district is not planning to require the vaccine for students and employees.   Right now, the vaccination rate in Montrose County is lagging behind the statewide average, with only 46% of residents 12 and older fully vaccinated. Just over half have received at least one dose. To learn more visit us at montrosepress.com -   That's all for today, thank you for listening! Good morning and welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's Wednesday Aug 18th and we're here to bring you a closer look at our top stories, events and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado.    Today - Colorado has committed $173 million in federal money to COVID testing in public schools throughout the state. But the program will not be in place when many Montrose students return to classrooms on Thursday.   Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Whether it's for your home or your business they offer the best speeds at the best price. Right now, if you refer a friend you can get $25 off! Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at elevateinternet.com.   Now, our feature story.   Colorado has committed $173 million in federal money to COVID testing in public schools throughout the state. But the program will not be in place when many Montrose students return to classrooms on Thursday.   The Colorado Sun reported that the program is behind schedule. This comes as dozens of school districts have already begun to welcome students back to in-person classrooms.   Testing students, especially those still under the age of 12 and ineligible for COVID vaccines, is a large part of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's guidance.   Once it is set up, participation in the program is voluntary. Students under the age of 18 will be required to obtain parental consent.   Montrose's strategy is less aggressive than other school districts around the state. Teachers and staff in Denver Public Schools are required to receive a vaccine or participate in regular COVID testing. And student athletes above age 12 in Aurora Public Schools must receive a vaccine or be regularly tested.   And outside of testing, our district is also waiting to hear back from the state about the exact details for vaccination clinics.    But supporting vaccine clinics came under attack at the August 10 school board meeting. Disgruntled parents and community members waved signs and passionately spoke to the board about their objections.   The vaccination rate in Montrose County still trails behind the state average. Less than half of adults are fully vaccinated.   But if at least 70% of people eligible for the vaccine within a school have been fully vaccinated, quarantines are not required for anybody at the school.   To learn more about this story visit our full story at montrosepress.com   You can also stay up to date on NABUR!    Next,  For the third consecutive year, Colorado Parks and Wildlife is encouraging hunters to take a friend hunting. As a reward, CPW has created a contest for mentors who take the time to pass on their knowledge.   Here's how it works… Mentors can take a beginner hunter out or mentees can encourage an experienced hunter to teach them how to hunt. From there, the pair can enter to win some great prizes by submitting a photograph and brief story of their time out in the field. Submissions will be judged by their ability to inspire and are due by February 8th. Everyone must be at least 18 years old. Also, the mentors must have held a Colorado hunting license in at least three of the last five years.   Check out the full story to learn more and submit your story at montrosepress.com   That's all for today, thank you for listening! Educators are heart centered individuals who can be caught up in the “more is more” culture, however, at this time it is crucial to embrace a “less is more”  attitude so that we can support students and colleagues who have experienced trauma.  Trauma is like a wound and takes time and attention to heal; however, many individuals are currently experiencing prolonged and complex trauma which is causing their nervous systems to over or under react.  Without mitigating the trauma response students can't learn and teachers can't teach! Educators are amazing, creative, and innovative, they lead with their hearts and know how to care for kids. Yet, many are grappling with how to support themselves, students, and colleagues who are experiencing episodic and prolonged trauma.  In this episode Beth Kelley and Brooke O'Drobinak help answer some of the questions about trauma and provide ideas that teachers, schools, and systems can put into place to support both mental health and learning. Brooke and Beth are the co-authors of Teaching, Learning, and Trauma, Grades 6-12: Responsive Practices for Holding Steady in Turbulent Times. Educators owe it to themselves to take care of themselves right now, so that they can be a present and calm influence.  Consider the following: How am I taking care of myself so I can take care of others? What are my daily rituals for starting and ending work each day? In what ways might I connect with colleagues? How can I apply the less is more strategy? In order to support students, teachers and leaders must lean into planning and setting priorities.  Consider the following planning questions: How am I intentionally creating opportunities for human connection, particularly between students? How can I simplify processes and routines? What are my curricular priorities? How can I apply the concept of less is more?  What can I cut down or cut back?

Author Samuel Jaye Tanner joins us to talk about his article, "Whiteness is a White Problem: Whiteness in English Education." Our guests discuss how white people in an American context have problems with race that are distinct from the racism people of color experience, and how white English educators can rethink their roles in dismantling white supremacy. This discussion launches the second iteration of LEARN, a Marginal Syllabus co-developed with the National Writing Project (NWP) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). During each month, from November to June during the 2019-20 academic year, we will collaboratively read and discuss an article, published in four different NCTE journals, that investigates the intersection of literacy and equity. Refer to the 2019-20 syllabus for information on all the annotatable readings; these will go “live” on the first Monday of each month, along with related events hosted by the National Writing Project. Guests Sam Tanner, Assistant Professor, PennState Andrea Zellner, Literacy Consultant, Oakland Schools (MI) Christina Cantrill, Associate Director of National Programs, National Writing Project Joe Dillon, Co-Founder, Marginal Syllabus; Teacher, Rangeview High School in Aurora Public Schools in Colorado; Denver Writing Project Teacher-Consultant Remi Kalir, Co-Founder, Marginal Syllabus; Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Denver School of Education and Human Development Related Links "Whiteness is a White Problem: Whiteness in English Education" 2019-20 Marginal Syllabus
