NFL seasoned vet Cam Worrell brings a high football IQ and unmatched life experience filled with grit on the pod this week. From going D1 to Junior College then BACK to his same D1. Cam explains life lessons he had to learn that brought him back stronger and propelled his way into being a undrafted free-agent making the 53 man roster for the Chicago Bears as a rookie. His NFL experience between primarily the Chicago Bears and the Miami Dolphins on top of his Fresno State Valley roots has turned him into the ultimate example for athletes at all levels.
His football story is like many others: a star high school athlete who receives multiple college scholarships offers, gets into the NFL as an undrafted NFL free agent and is out of the league in a year or so. His personal story is unlike anyone else's: before his senior year at Gateway High School in Aurora, a bullet entered and exited his neck in a movie theatre. The bullet came from the theatre next door where a horrific tragedy left 12 people dead. Zack Golditch did not allow July 20, 2012 to deter his football goals or his new aspiration to be a first responder. The offensive lineman had committed to Colorado State University just 8 days prior to the shooting. He loved playing for the Rams and was named First Team All Mountain West his senior year. His NFL career was short but he rolled with the punches on four different teams his rookie season. He was out of the NLF after training camp his second year. Then Zack started his next mission: to be a firefighter and give back to his community. He's currently a South Metro Firefighter and has helped the 7/20 Foundation start the Hero's Journey 5K in Aurora every July to raise money for a scholarship fund benefiting first generation college students from Aurora Public Schools. To donate to Zack's scholarship fund, visit Aurora Public Schools Foundation and specify Zack Golditch Scholarship in the notes.

Arrelious Benn was a star football player at Dunbar Senior High School (Washington, DC) and the University of Illinois. He entered the NFL draft after his junior year in college and was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His NFL career with Tampa Bay, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars spanned seven years, twice the league average. But it is also included two ACL tears, a fractured lumbar and a shattered collarbone. After his final season with the Jaguars, he and his family put down roots and decided to open Social House Coffee in the Avondale section of Jacksonville. Replacing a former gun store, his neighborhood shop is all about great coffee and building community. As Benn shares in the podcast, "Football consumed my life for so many years. But I know I only have one body. And I want to see my kids grow up and there are other things I want to do. It's a breath of fresh air to do something new and be creative." Benn is now working in what he calls "my first real job." He spends his days taking customers orders, serving coffee/pastries and managing a staff of six. And he couldn't be happier.

How do you leave the NFL after a career-ending injury and successfully pivot into a valuable, in-demand role in a completely different industry? That's what I wanted to find out from my guest, former Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings tight end, Brent Novoselsky. Many pro athletes have the rug pulled out from under them when their careers end. By having a plan, Brent put himself on a completely different trajectory. His NFL achievements include 100 games, 100 special teams' tackles, and an induction into the Chicago Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Today, he serves as Treasurer for the Retired NFL Players Association Chicago Chapter, and Vice President of Wealth Management at GCG Financial. Brent opened up about his journey, going in-depth about; How to pivot the structure and work ethic of sports into a different career. Why the NFL is a simulated war environment where all careers end unwittingly, and how to set yourself up for success beyond it. The reason athletes struggle after sport, and why franchising is the perfect career opportunity for people trained on structure and routine How to unlock the human capital that will elevate you by connecting with intent. Pro athletes are uniquely equipped for business ownership if they use what they learned from sports as a springboard. What's the lesson for non-athletes? You can take success in one area of your life into something completely new and rewarding. If you're looking for insights from the sports field (including what it was like training with the Chicago Bulls), and lessons on hard work and strategic foresight, you won't want to miss this episode! In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray get a chance to talk with long-time Atlanta Falcon, Tyso Claybo, about his career and retirement from the NFL. The conversation starts with Tyson Clabo's college years and the let down of not being picked in the NFL draft after graduation. He took a lot of trips to visit with teams, so he felt upbeat for awhile. When things were not falling into place, he began to question his abilities. He found himself in Europe for a bit, going from Barcelona, Spain to Hamburg, Germany. In the middle of playing in Europe, he was called back to the states. Even then, he was not able to get on an active roster until a meeting with the Atlanta Falcons. Though he was recovering from an injury at that time, the Falcons said they wanted to see him again. He didn't believe them, figuring the injury had killed his chances. However, true to their word, Atlanta brought him on and he played from 2005-2013. His NFL career then took two brief stints in Miami and Houston before he retired in 2014. The interview wraps with a discussion of how Tyson and his wife adopted their children. The overall message discussed is to work with local representatives to make the process and cost of adoption easier for loving couples who want to raise those children as their own. After the interview, Walt goes through what may be the worst movie he has reviewed thus far in season four. The hosts then turned to their crazy news segment and finish with their entertainment segment. WATCHING Walt watched the documentary, Operation: Varsity Blues - The College Admin Scandal and highly recommends it. He also watched the documentary, What the Health? Finally, he is embarking on WandaVision. Alan only had time to watch the first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier and loved it. He mocked those who criticize the pace, saying it was only the first episode and to let the story develop. READING Walt is still making his way through, "Running with the Devil," and hopes to finish it shortly. Alan hasn't gotten the book yet, but he plans to get, "Trumpography: How Biblical Principles Paved the Way to the Presidency," by photographer Gene Ho. The reason for wanting to get the book is a mutual friend of Alan's put them in touch and he will likely be an upcoming guest on the podcast. LISTENING Walt finished up the podcast limited series, Gangster House. He thought it was a well produced and enjoyable story about an FBI Top 10 Most Wanted, whose girlfriend just so happened to live close to Walt's family when he was growing up. Alan did a plug for The Marriage Fit Podcast, a show he and his wife started at the beginning of the year. Ottis (OJ) Anderson enjoyed a stellar 14 year NFL career, playing with the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Giants. He grew up playing sports like baseball, but football was his passion. For university, he chose the University of Miami primarily because it was close to home. He had offers from all the top schools in Florida and across the country, but with his strong bond with his mother, he saw no need to go elsewhere. At Miami, he blossomed into an elite back which saw him become a 1st-Team All-American. His NFL career started off with a bang, as he was only a handful of yards away from leading the league in rushing as a rookie. His team success came as a member of the Giants, winning 2 Super Bowls, and earning Super Bowl MVP honours in Super Bowl XXV. After football, he was involved in the insurance business for many years. He is currently a Patient Ambassador for Novo Nordisk, a healthcare company that he has teamed up with as he shares his journey with diabetes. Scott Cordischi and (abc 6) Nick Coit (@NCoitABC6) break down the Josh Gordon situation. Gordon has to get the help he needs. His NFL career may be over. The Patriots have to move on. Chris Hogan and the rest of the running backs and wide receivers need to step up to fill the void.
Benjamin Allbright is an NFL analyst and radio host in Denver who has connections around the NFL and a full view of the league. His NFL power rankings, based off his own mathematical formula, have the Cleveland Browns as the No. 10 team in the league through four games. So Doug Lesmerises invited him back on Takes By The Lake. They talked about those rankings in the interview, and of course it's early and a small sample size can easily skew rankings like this. Allbright said his rankings give a lot of credit to staying close in games, and in the three games they didn't win, the Browns have been really close. But beyond a ranking, Allbright has been very impressed with the Browns defense, and he's been a strong believer in Baker Mayfield since the middle of last season. He's a great guest and it was an interesting conversation. So enjoy this Takes By The Lake episode from cleveland.com. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Moving forward to your dream path is not always about taking on the uphill climb. Sometimes, you meet some downward turns that test you. The same goes with former NFL head coach of the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts Jim Mora Sr. His NFL career took its own ups and downs, but with hard work, timing, and luck in between, he has taken the challenge and moved up to the Big League. He shares his path to success and reminisces about the events that took him to where he is now—from taking interviews and the infamous robbery incident, to picking Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf. Finally, he talks about leaving after four years while remaining loyal to the people around him.

J.R. Tolver isn't what's considered to be the standard ex-"jock" or the statistics that tend to go with them. A new study says that 16 percent of NFL players will go broke within 12 years of retirement. The findings are markedly different from a 2009 study that put the number at 78 percent just two years after retirement. Regardless what the percentage is, some people don't plan to fail...they fail to plan. In some respect they're not just talking about money in terms of being "broke". This also includes in spirit. J.R.'s spirit and drive remains strong and he attributes that to the way he was raised and the example set by his father. So by the time his playing days in the NFL were over, he knew what he had to do next. He earned both his Bachelors and Masters...with that and the connections he made during his playing days, he set a plan in motion. You have to respect the grind! In this interview J.R. and I cover his journey; His NFL career and what prepared him for business His role in teaching athletes/ex-athletes how to be entrepreneurs outside the sport? How he started in a Waste Management Business Would you take this path again? How his father inspires him to be the man he is today His role in League Network and more....
