This Black History Month, the Better Samaritan sits down to talk about the sermon that inspires our theme. Join us for a conversation with Dr. Peniel Joseph of the University of Texas at Austin to discuss King's sermon, "On Being a Good Neighbor," as well as his place within American society. In the sermon, King points out why the Priest and Levite may have passed by the wounded man on the road. Perhaps they were too busy with important ecclesiastical meetings, he says, or perhaps their temple regulations demanded that they touch no human body for several hours before their temple function began. Or, King says (presumably tongue in cheek), they could have been on their way to a meeting to organize a 'Jerico Road Improvement Association.'  “Certainly this was a real need,” King writes. “It is not enough to aid the wounded man on the Jerico Road. It is also necessary to work to change the conditions of the Road which made robbery possible.  “Philanthropy is marvelous, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the need for working to remove many conditions of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary. So maybe the Priest and the Levite felt that it was better to cure injustice from the causal source than to get bogged down with one individual effect.” Joseph says that sometimes, King left people on the side of the road too. He says that we may laud King and use him as a heroic signifier of American exceptionalism, but his life proves the opposite: that American exceptionalism is a lie. About Jon Kolko Jon Kolko is the author of Creative Clarity, Partner at Modernist Studio, and the Founder of Austin Center for Design. Previously the Vice President of Design at Blackboard, he has worked extensively with both startups and Fortune 500 companies. He has been a Professor of Interaction and Industrial Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and has taught at the University of Texas at Austin, the Center for Design Studies of Monterrey, Mexico, and Malmö University, Sweden. Episode Highlights How is teaching in the US different than teaching abroad? Jon has taught in some of my favorite places. But how is teaching Austin, Texas different from teaching in Malmo, Sweden? The work ethic is a little different to say the least. “Sweden is committed and motivated. They respect design and humanity ahead of business.” More on Nordic design. As a frequent visitor to Sweden, Denmark, and Finland, I am a huge fan of Nordic design. “They take it very seriously. They roll up their sleeves and work on something until it’s done.” How can your brand embrace design thinking? Jon shared his two core pillars. First, vision/narrative. Design thinkers have a knack for embracing the world as it could be and sharing that vision. Usually through storytelling. Second, criticism/iteration. We need to get better at talking about why something doesn’t work. How can we get better about talking about things that don’t work? “There are rules! First the person being critiqued shuts up. This lets everyone be heard. But they also get to filter. We also make sure the language is aimed at the work product.” As opposed to critiquing the person behind the work. What if you are creative, but your organization is not? Many of us have worked in places that have tried to adopt more creative practices, and we know that it doesn’t always produce the desired results. In fact, if we introduce creativity, it can even seem to backfire. But Jon Kolko has devised a formula for injecting creativity into resistant organizations. Author of the book, Creative Clarity: A Practical Guide for Bringing Creative Thinking Into Your Company, Jon is a Partner at Modernist Studio and Founder of Austin Center for Design. He served as VP of Design at Blackboard, has worked extensively with both startups and Fortune 500 companies, and has written four additional books on design. Kurt has focused his time at Booz Allen making innovation real and relevant. He serves as the Director of the National Innovation Hub network and of the Innovation Center. Over the past year, the Center has hosted over 15,000 people, over 1,000 events and meetings, and helped to shape 33 project teams, resulting in over $550M of proposal, new, or follow on work. Throughout his 13 years at Booz Allen, Kurt has served clients by focusing on the strategic transformation and organizational design of both commercial and government clients through innovation and analytics, including multiple agencies and companies in defense, intelligence, oil/gas, technology, and aerospace.  Kurt holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, a certificate in Change Management from Georgetown University, a certificate in Design Thinking from Austin Center 4 Design, and a BS in Economics from the US Naval Academy. Prior to Booz Allen, Kurt served over 9 years as an AH-1W Cobra pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps with secondary duties as an intelligence officer.
