Trump's Tariffs Shake Global Trade, But India Stays Steady Donald Trump's sweeping new tariffs—10% on all imports and 27% on Indian goods—sent global markets into a tailspin, yet India's markets showed resilience. While Japan's Nikkei plunged nearly 3% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.5%, India's Sensex and Nifty 50 barely flinched. Analysts say India's competitive edge remains intact, though foreign investors pulled ₹2,806 crore from stocks. Meanwhile, gold prices surged as investors sought safe havens amid U.S. economic concerns. With central banks increasing gold reserves, the move signals deeper worries about the dollar's stability. India's Fuel Trade With the U.S. Faces New Challenges The 27% tariff on Indian imports is set to disrupt India's $6 billion petroleum trade with the U.S., particularly in refined fuels like gasoline. As Western nations cut Russian oil post-Ukraine war, India became a major supplier—but the new tariff threatens that role. Despite a 3.7% rise in export volume, revenue dropped 7% to $40.4 billion this fiscal year. Private refiners like Reliance and Nayara Energy are expected to take a hit. India is unlikely to retaliate with counter-tariffs, as that would raise domestic crude and LNG prices. Instead, officials are considering boosting imports of U.S. WTI crude to maintain trade ties. India's Pharma Industry Wins Tariff Exemption Amid Trump's tariff spree, Indian pharmaceuticals emerged unscathed. The U.S. exempted the sector, recognizing its role in providing affordable medicines worldwide. India supplies 40% of the U.S.'s generic drugs, saving the American healthcare system $219 billion in 2022 alone. With exports worth $8.7 billion to the U.S. and imports of just $800 million, the exemption benefits both nations. However, legal experts warn of potential future scrutiny under Section 232, which assesses imports based on national security concerns. For now, the exemption reinforces India's status as the “pharmacy of the world,” opening opportunities for biosimilars and domestic API production. BMW India's EV Sales Soar Despite Industry Caution BMW India defied concerns over slow EV adoption, reporting a threefold surge in electric vehicle sales in Q1 2024. EVs accounted for 17% of its total sales (3,914 units), with overall sales growing 7% year-on-year. While Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki remain cautious about EV adoption due to infrastructure challenges, BMW sees strong demand even in smaller cities. The company's latest EV, the BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase, launched at Auto Expo 2024, has already secured 1,500 bookings. However, the auto industry faces headwinds from Trump's 25% tariff on auto imports, prompting manufacturers to refocus on internal combustion engines (ICE) amid policy uncertainty. Dusit International Returns to India With a Bold Expansion Plan After exiting in 2017, Thailand's Dusit International is making a comeback in India with plans to sign 30 hotels and 3,000 rooms in three years. “This time, we're getting it right,” says Siradej Donavanik, VP of Global Hotel Development. The company is targeting tier-II and III cities while maintaining a presence in metros. Led by industry veteran Deepika Arora, Dusit's expansion includes luxury and upper-midscale brands, with upcoming hotels in Raipur, Bhiwadi, Kolkata, Lonavala, Kasol, and Manali. As India's luxury travel market surges toward a projected $410 billion by 2030, Dusit sees a prime opportunity to establish a strong foothold.

India becomes the first country outside of the UK, to build the Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport. Happy 2022 and welcome to Season 2 of Broke Car Snobs! We're back finally - the month of January has been at the same time long, short, chaotic, and boring. Let's dive in shall we? In the first half, we get brought up to speed on what we've all been doing. Bruce bought another RC truck, Adam bought far too many car parts, and AJ bought a car wash. All of us caught COVID at the same time (Adam unconfirmed) and we've all been having trouble starting our cars with this damn freezing weather we're in. In Bruce's case, slow cranking. In Adam's, no cranking at all. Also in this half, January's PetrolBox gets opened! In the second half, we talk about some upcoming car events, despite it being winter. The soonest being Syracuse's Auto Expo at the OnCenter, which should offer an exciting look at what the auto manufacturers have to offer. Also Watkins Glen's opening weekend is on our schedule for the second year in a row. Adam brings some news articles, we debate the ethics of ranch dressing on pizza, and AJ starts this season's trivia with more movies described poorly. It's great to be back, and just wanted to say we appreciate all our listeners

Show #688 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 5th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ELECTRIFY AMERICA COMPLETES 400 EV CHARGING STATIONS "Electrify America confirmed that they completed the installation of their first 400 EV charging stations only 20 months after starting the deployment" says Electrek: "They started deployment less than two years ago, and today, they confirmed that they have already achieved their initial goal of deploying 400 stations, including over 1,700 charge points. Brendan Jones, COO of Electrify America, confirmed the news to Electrek, but he clarified that while all the stations are deployed, some of them still need to be activated and are awaiting approval from the local electric utility. All of the company’s highway fast-charging stations are equipped to charge vehicles at up to 350 kW, even though most electric cars on the road today can’t receive that much power. The company says that they are planning for the future EV fleet as much as five years ahead. They also have 150 kW in urban areas for city charging." https://electrek.co/2020/02/03/electrify-america-400-ev-charging-station-tesla-supercharger-rollout/ BIGGEST EU TESLA CHARGE PARK YET PLANNED IN GERMANY "Tesla’s largest fast-charging park in the EU will soon go online on a plot of land owned by bakery Roland Schüren at the Hilden motorway junction (A3/A46) near Düsseldorf." according to electrive: "According to local media reports, “on February 14th, a 16-pallet supercharger with a 1-megawatt transformer will initially go into operation there”. Tesla intends to build a total of 40 stalls of the latest generation V3 chargers with a peak output of up to 250 kilowatts at the Hilden intersection." https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/03/biggest-european-tesla-charge-park-yet-planned-in-germany/ GM'S EV DAY "General Motors will be hosting an "EV Day" on the 4th of March. The announcement came from President Mark Reuss during the company's Capital Markets Day presentation on Wednesday. Besides helping to communicate the extent of this monumental shift at the country's largest automaker, we expect to learn a few specifics about its future EV plans." says Domenick at InsideEVs: "While the near-term will bring a refreshed Bolt EV for 2021, and (hopefully) the rumored Bolt EUV (electric utility vehicle), GM's electric future well and truly gets underway when it starts to roll out product based on its "BEV3" program. This is where the focus, future product-wise, at least, will be during GM's EV Day next month. We already know that the new 2022 Hummer EV truck will be the first BEV3 vehicle to be produced, starting in the Fall of 2021" https://insideevs.com/news/397039/gm-ev-day-electric-future/ EVS CONTINUE SALES SUCCESS IN JANUARY 2020 FIGURES "The UK electric vehicle market continues to go from strength to strength, as the number of pure-electric cars tops the 100,000 mark in January 2020 - seeing registrations up more than 200% compared to last year." according to Chris at Next Green Car: "The latest set of statistics rom the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that more than 4,000 pure-electric cars were registered during the month. This figure, combined with more than 4,750 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars sold made January second best performing month in history in terms of electric vehicle market share at 5.9%. Total plug-in car registrations - pure-EVs and PHEVs combined - is now more than 273,000 units in the UK. Whilst still representing a relatively small proportion of the overall car market in the UK, it is clear that the demand is there from customers, as sales continue to grow as new models go on sale and greater numbers of EVs become available. Diesel sales continue to drop - -36% in January" https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8849/evs-continue-sales-success-in-january-2020-figures/ HERO’S NEW 53 MPH ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE "Hero Electric has taken to the Auto Expo 2020 show to unveil its first electric motorcycle, the Hero Electric AE-47, among other new personal electric mobility vehicles." says Micah at Electrek: "The AE-47 was unveiled today with a listed top speed of 85 km/h (53 mph) generated from a 4kW (5.3 hp) continuous-rated rear hub motor. While that isn’t likely to make the AE-47 feel at home on the highway, it’s certainly sufficient as a light electric motorcycle for city use." https://electrek.co/2020/02/05/heros-new-53-mph-electric-motorcycle-gets-100-mile-range-estimated-under-2k/ TESLA TO UTILIZE SIDE CAMERAS TO HELP DRIVERS BACK UP @teslaownersSV Can we get the side cameras to show up when backing up? @elonmusk Yes Teslarati reports: "Tesla vehicles have eight cameras that practically serve as the eyes of the vehicle, giving it a 360-degree view of its environment. When backing up though, drivers rely only on the rearview camera and sensors to park. Being able to utilize the side cameras will give drivers a better view of any spots they want to back up into, thereby reducing annoying incidents of wheel rash, dings, or in some cases, dents." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-side-cameras-back-up-assist-elon-musk/ AMAZON AND RIVIAN DISH DETAILS ON THEIR NEW ELECTRIC DELIVERY VAN "Rivian may be best known for its upcoming R1T electric pickup truck, but Amazon may give the startup the most exposure yet. Drivers won't need any external devices for mapping and Alexa will handle all voice commands to keep workers from entering information manually. We'll first see the vans hit the road in 2021 with a deployment of 10,000. Then, a total of 100,000 of them will be on the streets delivering packages by 2030." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/rivian-amazon-electric-delivery-van-design-features-2021/ SHELL DOUBLES ULTRARAPID-CHARGING STATIONS IN GERMANY "In addition to the already planned 50 HPC columns with 150 kW that Shell is building with the energy supplier EnBW, the oil company is now promising another 50 HPC columns in a second wave, apparently primarily in northern Germany." picks up electrive: "Shell, for example, took over the German battery manufacturer Sonnen in February 2019, the charging infrastructure specialist NewMotion in October 2018 and, at the beginning of the year, the US company Greenlots, which also focuses on this field. In mid-December, Shell installed the first HPC column in Germany at the filling station in Reutlingen." https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/05/shell-doubles-fast-charging-stations-in-germany/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs? A 7.0-inch touchscreen will take pride of place on the dash and a segment-first part digital instrument cluster will also be part of the package. Having sat in an Altroz we can tell you that the Tata hatchback will not be the roomiest car in the class. Rear seat space is down on rivals and the high window line also limits the view out. A 341-litre boot does promise plenty of room for luggage, however. Tata Altroz engine options will include an 85hp, 1.2-litre petrol from the Tiago and a 90hp version of the Nexon’s 1.5-litre turbo-diesel. These engines will come mated to manual gearboxes to start with, with automatic options likely to follow at a later stage. While the Altroz’s mileage per litre figures are not known as yet, Tata Motors is confident of strong numbers made possible by the car’s low kerb weight. Expect Tata Altroz prices to range from Rs 5-8 lakh (estimated, ex-showroom). The Hyundai i20, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Honda Jazz are some of the Tata Altroz’s rivals. SPORTS Sangakkara Calls For Wage Reform in Tests Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara has called for Test cricket to introduce a minimum match fee for all countries to stop young players ditching the long-form for lucrative Twenty20 leagues. There's a Cinematography Act of 1952 which clearly says that if a film gets a certificate from the CBFC then it's the job of the state to take care of the law & order situation. And I think Supreme Court has given the judgement according to that.” Nihalani further said the Supreme Court ruling is an eye-opener for all those organisations that held protests against the film and that “it’s the responsibility of the state government to provide full security for a safe release of the film. **TECH** Microsoft on Wednesday announced that its 2-in-1 detachable Surface Book 2 is coming to all Surface markets, including India.
