Small investors are savvier; look what they did with small-cap stocks International airlines vie for the Indian globetrotterTata Motors business divisions come to a fork in the roadShould Nvidia employees with stock options sell or stay put?Ask me anything: Inside the race to build desi GPTsWelcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Tuesday, March 5, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:Concluding the day marked by range-bound trading, Indian benchmark indices ended Monday with marginal gains. The Nifty 50 reached a new all-time high of 22,440 in early trading but subsequently pared some of those gains. At the end of the session, Nifty was up 0.12 per cent while Sensex closed marginally up by 0.09 per cent. Retail investors are getting smarter day by day. With a rally in small and midcap stocks over the last three quarters of 2024, these investors who trade directly on the exchanges, had a gala time. Companies such as BSE, Birlasoft, Zensar Tech, Sonata Software, and RBL Bank saw their stock prices jump anywhere between 23 per cent to 415 per cent in the nine months through December. At the same time, retail investors cut their stake in these companies by 4 to 11 per cent. This means, these investors who typically invest only up to 2 lakh rupees, are getting in at low points and selling at mega profits. Mint's market correspondents Ram Sahgal and Mayur Bhalerao examine how retail players are riding the small cap wave.Global airlines are looking at India with hopeful eyes. After witnessing a surge in the domestic market last year, airlines are upbeat on foreign fliers from India. The upcoming summer season is adding to the momentum. International carriers like Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, and Etihad, among others, are expecting a significant increase in demand from India. They are adjusting their networks to accommodate this anticipated growth. According to the ratings agency ICRA, international passenger traffic for domestic airlines is projected to exceed the peak levels recorded in the fiscal year 2024. January 2024 itself saw 6.52 million passengers flying abroad, 17 per cent more than last January. Data from online travel portal ixigo attests to the growing number of outbound flights from India, reports Anu Sharma, Mint's aviation correspondent. Ixigo saw a 2.5 times increase in searches for international travel in April and May this year, compared to 2023. Most popular destination in these searches you wonder? These are countries that have recently made travel for Indians visa free such as Kenya, Thailand, and Malaysia. One of India's automobile behemoths is going to see a massive change in its corporate structuring. Tata Motors is going ahead with a demerger into two separate publicly traded companies. The company's board greenlit the demerger proposal on Monday. This division will segregate the Commercial Vehicles business and its related investments from the Passenger Vehicles sector, which includes passenger vehicle, EV, and Jaguar Land Rover verticals. So if you are a shareholder in Tata Motors, how will this affect you? All shareholders of the company will retain stock worth the same value in both companies following the demerger. The demerger is a logical next step after the previous split of the passenger and electric vehicle segments in 2022. The decision is expected to boost the independence of each business unit, which will also allow them to implement strategies more efficiently.Software company Nvidia has had a stellar run on the US stock market. Since the start of the year, its share price has gained more than 70 percent. Since last year, it has surged by a whopping 240 percent. The reason? Its dominance over supply over hardware and software needed to make artificial intelligence a reality. Such a performance in the markets has created many millionaires among its staff who hold employee stock options. Mint Money's Shipra Singh speaks to some Nvidia employees from India and talks to them about their newfound wealth — and how they plan to use it. Moreover, since these are US stocks, some might be tempted to not disclose them to the taxman. Shipra writes that this isn't advisable, as it opens them up to scrutiny under the Black Money Act.LLMs or large language models are the generators behind most of the AI chatbots floating around. LLMs excel in understanding and generating human-like text in the language that they are trained in. But How do you design an LLM for a country like ours, with hundreds of languages being spoken? This is where Indian GPTs come into the picture. While OpenAI's ChatGPT is largely trained on English, companies developing Indian language LLMs face the daunting challenge of training their systems in languages that are not extensively digitised. Indian companies have already started the uphill task of making accessible AI chatbots for all. Take ‘Ask Disha' for example - IRCTC's chatbot aimed at helping passengers. Chennai Police has a similar project — ‘AI Police', a virtual assistant. These chatbots work on an LLM called BharatGPT, which is designed by Bengaluru's AI startup CoRover. Mint's executive editor Leslie D'monte takes a deep dive into the emerging world of Indian LLMs. He also writes about the mammoth task that Indian companies face - creating an AI, accessible to all Indians. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Let us know by writing to us at feedback@livemint.com. You may send us feedback, tips or anything that you feel we should be covering from your vantage point in the world of business and finance.

Statistics show that large vehicle crashes account for 21% of fatalities, with occupants of the smaller vehicles more likely to suffer. Large commercial vehicles are not like cars—they require extra skill and training to drive. Their size and weight can inhibit the drivers' ability to react quickly to unexpected moves by other road users, and drivers of smaller vehicles may feel intimidated and react inappropriately when they perceive a large vehicle approaching. This episode of the IHSA Safety Podcast discusses tips and advice for understanding large commercial vehicles and sharing the road with them. Here are a few tips shared: · Large vehicles have large blind spots, so car drivers should avoid staying in their blind spots whenever possible.· Large vehicles move slower and take longer to react, so give them plenty of time to respond to your signals.· Do not tailgate large trucks; rather, keep a safe distance when following.IHSA has a wide range of resources and tools that can be adopted to contribute to safer roads in Ontario. Hey everyone, Tom Raftery here, and I'm super excited to share this episode of the Digital Supply Chain podcast with you. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Barrett Young, the Head of Fleet Safety Strategy at Netradyne, and we had an insightful conversation about the incredible ways AI technology is revolutionizing fleet safety for commercial vehicles. In our chat, Barrett explains how Netradyne's AI-powered dash cams are helping to create a safer environment for drivers, improving driver retention, and reducing costs related to accidents, insurance claims, and driver turnover. We discuss the importance of positive recognition for drivers and how Netradyne's Green Zone Score is making a difference in coaching and driver behavior.Barrett shares some exciting news about Netradyne's expansion into new markets like the UK, EU, New Zealand, Australia, and India, and how they're working on adapting their AI technology to recognize different road signs and behaviors in each region. We also get a sneak peek into Netradyne's future roadmap, which includes some innovative new products that will challenge the status quo and push the boundaries of what AI can do for fleet safety. As we wrap up the conversation, Barrett leaves us with a thought-provoking question: Can fleets really afford not to have an AI safety system in today's world? I think you'll find his answer quite compelling. So, buckle up and get ready for a fascinating journey into the world of AI and fleet safety. The Global Commercial Vehicle Drive to Zero Program aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a world with zero-emission commercial vehicles. The Clean Energy Ministerial, a global forum to advance clean technology and policy, and CALSTART, a clean transportation non-profit, started the campaign. By 2025 the program hopes to achieve commercially competitive zero-emission technology and for this technology to be dominant by 2040. Drive to Zero's mission utilizes a ‘Beachhead Strategy' that works to target current commercial electrification markets, then from there drive growth in other regions. This beachhead strategy was developed in conjunction with CALSTART and the California Air and Resource Board (CARB) and has been incorporated into CARB's three-year investment strategy plan. The program also works to connect with cities, national and regional government agencies, manufacturers, fleets, fuel/energy suppliers, and other organizations that support early markets for zero-emission commercial vehicles.Drive to Zero goals for the next five years are to identify best practices, eliminate barriers, and share information among stakeholders to achieve success in their initial beachhead markets in China, India, Mexico, South America, Canada, the European Union, and the United States. The program plans to hold an annual global meeting to ensure all parties are working together to achieve their common goal set by the 2015 Paris Agreement. By supporting participants, coordinating activities, and sharing strategies and best practices Drive to Zero is working as an intermediary to support the growth of zero-emission commercial vehicles worldwide.  CALSTART:CALSTART is a nonprofit that works to develop clean, efficient transportation solutions. The organization, founded in 1992 and headquartered in Pasadena, California, works with governments and businesses across the globe to connect their clients with the clean energy sector. Their mission is to create a high-tech clean-transportation industry that will create jobs and fight climate change. CALSTART works with technology firms, transit operations, vehicle manufacturers, research institutions, and more to customize services, information, and programming to work towards sustainable transportation solutions. CALSTART focuses on the demonstration and development of new clean technologies, market acceleration, policy work, assessment, validation, and member support to help grow the zero-emission transportation sector. The organization's goals are to reduce barriers and promote innovation and progress in clean transportation technologies to accelerate the green transportation sector. The nonprofit specializes in four sectors: cars, trucks, buses, and fuels to promote economic and environmental improvement.Christiano Facanha:Christiano Facanha is a transportation and environmental engineer who leads CALSTART's Commercial Vehicle Drive to Zero program. With over fifteen years of experience in the transportation sector and expertise in the design, modeling, and evaluation of transportation emissions strategies and reduction, Facanha's mission is to reduce climate change by cleaning up air pollution in the transportation sector. Fancha holds a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, an MS in Transportation Management from the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, and a BS in Industrial Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Before working as Global Director at CALSTART, Cristiano led clean transportation activities related to sustainable freight, Brazil, and emission inventory tools at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT).Sources: https://calstart.org/cristiano-facanha/https://globaldrivetozero.org/about/program/https://calstart.org/about/https://globaldrivetozero.org/about/pledge/

In June, 2021, Ted Cannis was appointed CEO of Ford Pro, the vitally-important division focused on commercial vehicles like the Ford F-Series trucks and Transit vans. Ford sees enormous opportunity to grow this division in terms of revenues and profits in the next three years. In our conversation, Ted Cannis shares examples of how small to medium sized businesses can get a lot more efficient and profitable in a short space of time through connected car software applications. Ford is also rolling out the F-150 Lightning and E-Transiti to commercial customers in the US and European markets in 2022. This will be a gigantic test to see whether battery-powered vehicles can meet or exceed the experience now delivered by gasoline-powered vehicles. Cannis offers a pragmatic view, saying that electric vehicles will be right for some customers while others - for example companies that do a lot of towing - might prefer to stay with gasoline engines and powertrains, at least for the time being. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGohttps://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=enhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/

WE PROTECT AND BEAUTIFY THE WORLD™ ».
