From the BCCI's recently announced central contracts to the surprising venue choices for the Women's ODI World Cup 2025, and the decision to stall WPL expansion, we break down what each of these developments really means. Is equal pay just about match fees, or should equity be about the full picture—contracts, infrastructure, and investment? Are World Cup venues like Mullanpur and Raipur truly geared for a global event, or does this reflect missed ambition? And why is the WPL, despite its early success, being kept from growing? Join us for a sharp, no-nonsense conversation on the decisions that are quietly shaping the future of women's cricket in India. While Japan's Nikkei plunged nearly 3% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.5%, India's Sensex and Nifty 50 barely flinched. Analysts say India's competitive edge remains intact, though foreign investors pulled ₹2,806 crore from stocks. Meanwhile, gold prices surged as investors sought safe havens amid U.S. economic concerns. With central banks increasing gold reserves, the move signals deeper worries about the dollar's stability. India's Fuel Trade With the U.S. Faces New Challenges The 27% tariff on Indian imports is set to disrupt India's $6 billion petroleum trade with the U.S., particularly in refined fuels like gasoline. As Western nations cut Russian oil post-Ukraine war, India became a major supplier—but the new tariff threatens that role. Despite a 3.7% rise in export volume, revenue dropped 7% to $40.4 billion this fiscal year. Private refiners like Reliance and Nayara Energy are expected to take a hit. India is unlikely to retaliate with counter-tariffs, as that would raise domestic crude and LNG prices. Instead, officials are considering boosting imports of U.S. WTI crude to maintain trade ties. India's Pharma Industry Wins Tariff Exemption Amid Trump's tariff spree, Indian pharmaceuticals emerged unscathed. The U.S. exempted the sector, recognizing its role in providing affordable medicines worldwide. India supplies 40% of the U.S.'s generic drugs, saving the American healthcare system $219 billion in 2022 alone. With exports worth $8.7 billion to the U.S. and imports of just $800 million, the exemption benefits both nations. However, legal experts warn of potential future scrutiny under Section 232, which assesses imports based on national security concerns. For now, the exemption reinforces India's status as the “pharmacy of the world,” opening opportunities for biosimilars and domestic API production. BMW India's EV Sales Soar Despite Industry Caution BMW India defied concerns over slow EV adoption, reporting a threefold surge in electric vehicle sales in Q1 2024. EVs accounted for 17% of its total sales (3,914 units), with overall sales growing 7% year-on-year. While Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki remain cautious about EV adoption due to infrastructure challenges, BMW sees strong demand even in smaller cities. The company's latest EV, the BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase, launched at Auto Expo 2024, has already secured 1,500 bookings. However, the auto industry faces headwinds from Trump's 25% tariff on auto imports, prompting manufacturers to refocus on internal combustion engines (ICE) amid policy uncertainty. Dusit International Returns to India With a Bold Expansion Plan After exiting in 2017, Thailand's Dusit International is making a comeback in India with plans to sign 30 hotels and 3,000 rooms in three years. “This time, we're getting it right,” says Siradej Donavanik, VP of Global Hotel Development. The company is targeting tier-II and III cities while maintaining a presence in metros. Led by industry veteran Deepika Arora, Dusit's expansion includes luxury and upper-midscale brands, with upcoming hotels in Raipur, Bhiwadi, Kolkata, Lonavala, Kasol, and Manali. As India's luxury travel market surges toward a projected $410 billion by 2030, Dusit sees a prime opportunity to establish a strong foothold.

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, April 17, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:Indian benchmark indices fell for the third consecutive session on Tuesday, influenced by negative cues from global markets which are currently under pressure due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The Sensex closed down 0.62 per cent, while the Nifty ended the session 0.56 per cent lower.Shaktikanta Das, the Reserve Bank of India - India's highest monetary authority - has recently flagged concerns about unauthorised forex trading platforms, urging banks to keep a sharp eye on them. This has sparked a broader discussion about the need for tighter regulation in India's forex market. These platforms are where most foreign exchange transactions happen. They are primarily used by businesses like importers and exporters to manage their currency risks. These trades usually happen on Over-the-Counter platforms authorised by the RBI or through recognized exchange-traded segments of bourses. So what exactly is going on with forex trading platforms? And what has the RBI done about it? Mint's banking editor Gopika Gopakumar tackles those questions in today's Primer.Smartphone companies in India finally have some good news. The scramble for smartphones in the country, triggered by Covid-19 lockdowns ebbed back as the world returned to normal. However, the March quarter has ignited some hope in the hearts of smartphone manufacturers. This past March quarter, smartphone shipments rose by 5% year-over-year to somewhere between 32.5 to 35 million units, according to data from four industry analysts. It's a refreshing change, especially considering that back in the March quarter of 2021, shipments had peaked at 38 million units. Since then, there's been a bit of a slump. Mint's technology correspondent Shouvik Das reports on this turnaround which is especially crucial for big players like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Vivo, who together made about $38.8 billion in sales in India last year. However, despite these positive signs, industry veterans are advising caution. The broader economic pressures still loom large, affecting consumer confidence. The market has also seen a shift toward refurbished and second-hand smartphones, thanks to the growth of organised retailers in this space. India is gearing up for the third phase of its airport privatisation plan. More airports are expected to see private stakeholders after the upcoming election. Officials close to the matter told Mint's aviation correspondent Anu Sharma of Airports Authority of India's plans to sell off its remaining 13 per cent stake in Bangalore International Airport Ltd . But that's not all — they're also planning to throw the doors open for private bids to manage, operate, and develop 13 other airports, including popular ones like Bhubaneswar, Trichy, Indore, Raipur, Amritsar, and Varanasi. There's also talk of selling stakes in Hyderabad airport. The authorities are planning to bundle six profitable airports with seven smaller, not-so-profitable ones like Kushinagar, Gaya, Hubballi, Aurangabad, Jabalpur, Tirupati, and Kangra. This mix and match might just make the deal more attractive to potential investors. This push towards privatisation is part of a bigger picture - India's National Monetisation Plan which was rolled out back in 2021. The plan is ambitious, aiming to privatise around 25 airports and offload airport authority's shares in big metro airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. The government is hoping to unlock 21,000 crore rupees from these sales between 2022 and 2025.Mid-budget movies, which really felt the pinch through Covid, are suddenly back in the spotlight. Judging by the impressive box office numbers of films like Crew, Shaitaan, and Article 370 it looks like affordable ticket prices and clever marketing are paying off. Let's talk numbers. The movie Crew, featuring stars like Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon, earned 77 crore rupees since its release at the end of March. Ajay Devgn's horror thriller Shaitaan pulled in a cool 148 crore rupees from early March, and the political drama Article 370 isn't far behind with 82 crore rupees since late February. Andthese films have all been profitable. Even though the Hindi box office saw a 25 per cent dip year-on-year in the last quarter of FY24, small and medium-budget films are making a stronger showing than they have since the pandemic began. They're now accounting for 30-35 per cent of box office receipts, up from just 12-15 per cent previously. Mint's media and entertainment correspondent Lata Jha reports on the resurgence of mid-budget bollywood movies and the changing landscape of Indian cinema. As tensions in West Asia heat up, there's a real concern that crude oil prices might just hit the roof, possibly soaring past $100 per barrel if things continue to escalate. This is a big deal not just globally, but especially for India's oil marketing companies, because hiking fuel prices during an election season is not a popular move. Now, high crude prices are already an issue for state-owned oil marketing companies because it squeezes the marketing margins – which is the difference between what it costs to make petrol or diesel and what they sell it for. Right now, those margins are pretty thin, about 5 rupees per litre for petrol and barely a rupee for diesel. If crude prices shoot up, these margins could get even tighter. Mint's energy correspondent Rituraj Baruah spoke to industry insiders and analysts to break down the ongoing problem for Indian oil marketing companies. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Meanwhile, the Congress has promised to increase the rate from Rs 2,600 to Rs 3,000 per quintal. The other big poll issues are farmers' loan waiver, Chhattisgarhi identity, and the alleged Mahadev App scam, which the Enforcement Directorate has reportedly linked to chief minister Bhupesh Baghel. Book a free demo with Explorex here: https://share.hsforms.com/1wdxFNOxpQZ29F9MpD48e7Acyk5y Explorex's website: https://explorex.co/ There's an Indian burger startup that is stealing market share from Burger King and McDonald's. Its founder hadn't tasted a burger before 2010. Now he's running a ₹100 crore ARR burger chain with 100+ locations. This is the story of Biggies Burger: Biraja Rout is from Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He comes from a regular working-class family. In 2010 he got a job at Infosys, and briefly shifted to Mysuru for training: it was here that he tried his first burger. The experience had an unusually profound impact on him. After shifting to Bengaluru to work at Infosys' campus in Electronic City, Biraja borrowed ₹1.5 lakh from a friend and purchased a fabricated 5 sq. ft. booth. This was the first Biggies Burger location. He would man the booth after office hours and on weekends. Biraja was passionate about burgers but he had no business experience. From 2011 until 2015 he rarely had more than ₹1,000 in his bank account, and his motorcycle would often run out of petrol while he drove to Namdhari's to buy expensive, fresh lettuce for his burgers. Biggies Burger's second kiosk was set up in Bhubaneswar in 2012. Biraja would transport ingredients from Bengaluru via the Prasanthi Express train's AC chambers, as an affordable alternative to expensive cold chain logistics. He lost money on every Bhubaneswar burger sold. Biggies Burger became extremely popular in Bhubaneswar - it was essentially the only burger joint in a 200 kilometre radius. This caught the attention of Sandeep Satpathy, who approached Biraja about setting up a franchised location in Raipur in 2013. Raipur is a largely vegetarian city, and at this time the brand name was Biggies Burger ‘n' More. One of their secondary product lines were hot dogs, which were made of chicken meat. These meat products were underperforming in Raipur, and so Biraja decided to create a veg option. However, due to a lack of quality veg hot dog products in the Indian market, Biraja wasn't impressed and decided to import hot dogs instead, sourcing them from Malaysia. These hot dogs equated to a loss of ₹860 per kilo. Biraja sustained this loss for several years. By 2016, the business was still in a financially precarious position, owing between ₹18-20 lakh to various vendors. During this time, on any given day, Biggies Burger was ₹10,000 away from collapse, and when Biraja got married in 2016, he couldn't afford to buy a blazer. Biraja's fortunes finally turned when a master territory franchise was established and four franchisees paid their fees in rapid succession. Suddenly, Biraja and Biggies were out of debt. By the end of 2016, Biggies had 18 locations. In 2016, Sandeep Satpathy joined Biggies burger as a co-founder, along with Abilash Bellur, who had purchased the Electronic City location in 2013 as a franchisee. Abilash Bellur took on operations, Sandeep spearheaded business development, and Biraja focused on R&D. From 2016 onwards, the business was able to achieve financial stability. Biggies' parent company, Beamer Food and Beverages, also launched a new subsidiary brand, Bigguy's Wingery, to compete with KFC in the chicken QSR space. Today, Biggies has 124 locations, and is doing annualised revenue of ₹100 crore.

We talked about her being a cultural practitioner, who foregrounds the issues of caste, violence and oppression in a city with a painful history of riots. We also discussed their exhibits, ongoing thematic inquiries, the function of repetition in public dissent and the potential of museums in being institutions for dialogue, reconciliation and reaching closure. While trans-creating a chapter from Bhai Vir Singh's book Kalgidhar Chamtakar, I was transported into another dimension. Prose and poetry blended effortlessly. And what I experienced was a glorious symphony, an unexpected beauty that touched the depths of my being. This story seems to have been set around the period of the Battle of Bhangani (1688). The Hill Rajas had formed an alliance to fight Guru Gobind Singh Sahib. Suspicion and turmoil are in the air, which comes out loud and clear in this story. However, this is not that story. This story is about a woman – the rani of Raipur, who secretly loves the Guru in this turbulent time. Why secretly? Because her husband is not an admirer of the Guru. Through the sensitive pen of Bhai Vir Singh, we too get to experience her anguish, her yearning, her deep love and her faith for the Guru. This is truly a unique love-story. ----more---- The Fragrance of Bhai Vir Singh is a audio series exploring the legacy of the seminal poet presented by Sikh Research Institute. Strange & Scary Mysteries of the Month is a compilation of the weird, disturbing and downright baffling stories currently happening in our world. From UFOs and serial killers to ancient sites, mysterious creatures and even ghosts – these are the Strange & Scary Mysteries of the month for March 2018 5. Ancient Mexican City Discovered Just half an hour away from Mexico City, the small Western town of Morelia had been sitting on a large secret for centuries. The old city of Purepecha was once a flourishing civilization during the 16th century. Less well known than their counterpart, the Aztecs, the Purépecha were a once thriving people before the Europeans ravaged the country. Now, scientists reveal they finally finished mapping out the old city, uncovering a massive ancient complex that rival even the biggest cities we have today. 4. Toronto Serial Killer Bruce McArthur was considered the most unlikely suspect. For those he encountered, he looked like someone who was harmless, in fact, he even worked as a mall Santa – adding to his innocent-looking persona. But behind that kind exterior was a cold-blooded serial killer that hunted men in Toronto’s gay community. In 2010, Skandaraj Navaratnam was reported missing. He was last seen on September 6th leaving a gay bar with an unknown gentleman. Toronto police received a tip that Navaratnam had been murdered by someone with links to an online cannibalism ring and authorities found a potential suspect in James Alex Brunton. The Peterborough man was a member of the online cannibalism ring and was later charged for child pornography but was never proven to be Navaratnam’s murderer. 3. UFO Evidence in Oregon It was October 25, 2017 when an unidentified aircraft soared through the skies of the Pacific Northwest above Portland, Oregon. It was the Oakland Center Sector 31 that first detected the mysterious craft around 4:30 PM. Then After several minutes, the unknown craft caused huge concern as it veered off into a crowded stream of commercial airliners before disappearing from radar completly. Shortly afterwards, commercial airliner pilots reported visual contact. Some said it was too far from sight for them to provide an accurate description but at least one pilot said it was a white aircraft with the build of a Lear Jet. He couldn’t make out any marking on craft but added it was definitely big and moving very fast. 2. Death Penalty for Donald Smith Dubbed as the “Walmart Monster,” it took the jury just 12 minutes to unanimously recommend the death penalty for 61-year old child predator, Donald Smith. Smith was inside a Walmart store when he approached Rayne Perrywinkle and her two daughters. Rayne had mentioned the girls hadn’t eaten in a while and Smith offered to use his hundred and fifty dollar gift card for McDonalds to treat them. He also promised to buy clothes for the girls and Rayne trusted him enough, thinking he was merely a good Samaritan. However, while near the Walmart entrance where the McDonald’s was located, surveillance showed Smith luring 8-year old Cherish Perrywinkle outside of the store and into his van. It would take Rayne 20 minutes before she realized her daughter was missing and something was wrong. 1. 10,000-year-old Aliens Paleocontact or more popularly known as the ancient astronaut hypothesis proposes that intelligent beings from outer space may have visited Earth during ancient times. While many dispute this theory, others believe proof of such events are still around today. In Charama, India, one possible piece of evidence was found inside a cave. Lying 130km from Raipur, the Chhattisgarh cave displays what is believed to be 10,000-year-old cave paintings depicting extraterrestrials.

The TV show 'Top Sprinter Genesis' is focussed on young athletes. The first few episodes have already been shown, with the series due to finish it's run next year. The show's creator, Bambo Akani, and former Olympic medallist turned judge Deji Aliu believe they can restore Nigeria to sprinting greatness by finding and supporting the country's young talent. To be an ambassador for the game’s growth back home, she knows she needs to keep playing in English football. Scream for Bibian Paralympic snowboard gold medallist Bibian Mentel-Spee is a cancer survivor who knows others aren’t so fortunate. If you’ve had lung cancer in the Netherlands, you’re not eligible for a transplant operation. Frustrated, she came up with ‘Scream for Bibian’ to raise awareness. From Leicester to Hollywood Football films aren’t usually very good, but Jamie Vardy’s story could be the one to change all that. Screen-writer and Producer, Adrian Buchart, won plaudits for his work on the 'Goal!' films. Now, Adrian tells Sportshour he's found the perfect subject matter for his next project. 35 years of hurt, never stopped us dreaming India as a nation has only ever won nine Olympic golds - eight have been in men’s hockey, the last of them in 1980.
