Making a Scene Brings you an Interview with Bart BryantHow does a Connecticut transplant from Baltimore grow to pull off Austin-style hard drivin' heavy Blues & Rock and Roll? While from Baltimore, his fluid vocals and Blues-Rock guitar style have entertained audiences in Connecticut and Austin, Texas since his teens. His solo acoustic and band (Current) work in New Haven, CT and the Tri-State area gained him access to producers. By the late 70s Bart started recording his original songs. Recognition also brought warm-up band gigs for national acts at Toad's Place. Work with legendary artists like The Roches, Jorma Kaukonen, Poco, Pousette-Dart Band, Jonathan Edwards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Aztec Two-Step, Pure Prairie League, Johnny Winter, John Butcher, New Riders of the Purple Sage all had influence on Bryant's work & aspirations. http://www.makingascene.org

On this episode we check in with Rex Fowler from Aztec Two-Step! Since we It would have been Elvis' 89th birthday this month and Rex created the documentary called 200 Cadillacs about his generosity! So we figured it was a great opportunity to have Rex as our guest in The City's Backyard to not only talk about The King Of Rock n Roll but also Rex's new memoir and his show coming to the Tarrytown Music Hall on February 24th! The story of Aztec Two-Step is intertwined with the history of folk/rock music in America. Originating from a chance meeting at an “open mic night” in a Boston folk club in 1971, Rex & Neal's first four albums on Elektra & RCA Records helped usher the music of the 60's into the 1970's and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the musical genre. As their recording career continued, so did the critical acclaim. In 1986, their album “Living in America” was named in Billboard's year-end critic's poll. It also received the New York Music Award for the Best Folk Album. For Aztec Two Step 2.0 tour dates and more on the memoir called "See It Was Like This..." click here https://aztectwostep.com

The holiday season is a wonderful time to reconnect with important people in our lives we don't see often. It's always fun when you've been thinking about one of those people, and they connect with you first. One of those people in my life is ‘Monty' Delaney and I kept writing his name down on my things to do list to call him. “Monty' (short for Montgomery) is an all-around great guy with a heart as big as his 6 '6' frame. Besides being a warm wonderful person I've known for many years, he was also once an attorney who never failed to show up on the dime whenever I needed him. Often to help me handle my former ongoing ‘parking ticket problem'. The ‘problem' was, I'd forget to pay the damn tickets and they'd add up and then I'd land in ‘negotiations'. Oh and he'd also show up for that speeding ticket problem. LOL. Happy to report I've learned my lesson and now I don't get parking tickets anymore and I drive like an old lady… but I still love seeing Monty. Just not in court. Last I saw him actually, I had some fun on his radio show. He's got a lot to talk about. Monty served as a police officer in the South Bronx for nearly nine years until a back injury led to his retirement from the police force. He spent a significant amount of time in traction and swimming pools for rehabilitation. During this time, he was also in law school, which he had to pause and later return to. he did, and after years of practicing law, a heart issue arose and Monty decided it was time to close his practice and focus on his more creative endeavors. Monty is a talented singer-songwriter. He became involved in the music scene, playing at coffee houses back when, and has made some great albums. His 1996 album "Walking in the Light" was inspired by various societal and personal reflections and continues to be played across the country and he takes pride in its lasting appeal. It was produced by Rex Fowler of Aztec Two-Step, which was oddly the first musical group I saw perform in person when I arrived as a freshman at Ithaca College. Monty had given me one of those CD's and somehow it landed lodged inside the back sleeve of my cars front seat. No clue why. I accidentally found it last week when I went to the car wash and was cleaning out my car. I don't have a CD player in my car, so I just put it on my front seat to remind me to call Monty. Then after the car wash, I made a cemetery stop to get out of the car to say a holiday hello to my immediate family in the family plot. (It's what Italian girls do.) What are the chances that when I got back in the car, there on my phone sitting on the car seat next to the “Walking In The Light” CD was a text from… MONTY! Really? What are the chances? Naturally I called him immediately to report the serendipity, and we had some laughs as his lovely wife listened in, and we caught up about lots of things and he told me about his new book of poetry out now called "A Musings”. It's a collection of poems he wrote over the years while waiting in courtrooms. I invited Monty to stop by the radio studio this week to bring his new book and bring his lovely wife Connie, but sadly he woke up sick the day we planned it and so he called in to the show instead. I think you'll enjoy the podcast of our live lighthearted and authentic conversation of two friends catching up on The Debbie Nigro Show. The show is filled with laughter, personal anecdotes, and our shared history that underscores my point about of the importance of connections and the value of personal relationships. We will get together 'in person' when he feels better. I hope I've sparked you to reconnect with someone important to you, that you haven't seen or spoken to in awhile this holiday season. Let me know.

Producer, songwriter, and recording artist Paul Guzzone describes himself as an “electronic troubadour” fusing acoustic guitar with a variety of sonic textures. His passion for pop melodies and radio hits are very much a part of his narrative style. In addition to songwriting and performing, Paul has produced recordings for the critically acclaimed folk-rock duo- Aztec Two Step and is the bass player and contributing producer for Kevin Bacon & his brother Michael of The Bacon Brothers band. In this episode, Paul talks about being signed to major record label right out of high school, his years as a session musician working with such renowned folk artists as Tom Chapin and Tom Rush, and his 2013 re-emergence as singer/songwriter and producer of his own unique brand of music. According to Paul, writing a song and then recording it are inseparable - "the Sound is Everything."

Traveler's diarrhea is the most common medical issue that people complain of while traveling in less developed countries. One of parasitic causes of travelers diarrhea is amebiasis, caused by the protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolytica. Nominated for a 2014 New England Music Award, Kate Callahan, Connecticut's “Best Singer-Songwriter 2013” has three albums including her recent release Two Doors, which was featured on WNPR's Where We Live. Callahan's music feels soulful and she's unapologetically optimistic in concert. WNPR host Colin McEnroe praised a recent performance, saying, “Kate Callahan is the only performer I've ever seen who occasionally seems to be channeling something vaster and far more ancient than herself, something more easily understood by Emerson than by any modern person. Kate's credits include appearances at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artists Showcase, the New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas, and the CT Folk Festival. She has opened shows for folk legends Judy Collins and Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul, and Mary), troubadours Aztec Two-Step, John Gorka, Mustard's Retreat, and the late Bill Morrissey. She has also shared stages with folk-rock artists Rachael Sage and Regina Spektor. Stookey calls Callahan "real" and says her lyrics are "Zen-like." Kate joins Take 2 Radio Music for a chat and music on Wednesday, September 3rd at 3pm eastern!
Dan is an experienced performer and recording artist, having shared the stage and the studio with a diverse collection of commercially and critically successful artists. He began his career with Rane, an award-winning rock ensemble who, in addition to becoming a success in their own right, opened for such acts as The Allman Brothers Band, The Jerry Garcia Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Wilco, Rusted Root, and Santana. His innovative and tasteful cello playing can be heard on recordings from innumerable artists, notably Frank Black (of the Pixies) and Mark Mulcahy.
