Tyler Ramsey sat down with me for this week's episode of Roadcase, and I couldn't be more stoked to chat with the former Band of Horses guitarist. Tyler is a kind and gentle soul, who truly values the power of music as a means of connection with his audience. His latest album, New Lost Ages, sees him team up with producer Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes), and takes us on a deep ride, both musically and emotionally.I talked to Tyler about the power of music to connect, and how he relishes the possibility that his deeply personal songs might have a positive impact on his audience and fans. We also delve into the challenge of being more vulnerable as a means to becoming a better person and much to my delight, touch upon some fun Lord of the Rings talk too!! Support the Official Release You can listen to Band of Horses' Infinite Arms on: Apple Music Spotify Or purchase Infinite Arms on: Amazon Music Links Marvis Pro, the iOS music player Michael mentioned using to see his play counts. Vacationer's Relief, the only album that came close to Infinite Arms's play count number in Michael's library. You can read Michael's previous review on the record here. Michael mentioned having a Fracture print of Infinite Arms, which is a picture printed directly on glass for a minimal, sleek presentation. This is his current collection. Sun Kil Moon's Benji, the album Marc claimed to be a perfect foil to the easily digestible and repeatable Infinite Arms. You can listen to our previous discussion on the record in Episode 8. Band of Horses' new lineup during Infinite Arms, and would remain unchanged for years—the first “true” Band of Horses lineup: Benjamin Bridwell Creighton Barret Ryan Monroe Bill Reynolds Tyler Ramsey The star at the center of the pivot point in the album art is Polaris (more commonly known as the “North Star”). The star seems to stand still in long exposure photography while the rest of the northern hemisphere stars spin around it due to the North Star being in a (mostly) direct line with the Earth's rotational axis with respect to the North Pole. Christopher Wilson, the Photographer for Infinite Arms's cover art and all the band's album art up to that point. (information courtesy of the Albums app on iOS). Michael's insane graph of “vibrancy”/”energy” by track number Infinite Arms was nominated for “Best Alternative Music Album” for the 53rd Grammy Awards in 2011, the same year Arcade Fire famously secured Album of the Year with The Suburbs. You can read Marc's thoughts on The Suburbs here. Marc found “Factory” to share similarities with Paul McCartney and Wings's “Let Me Roll It” off 1973's Band on the Run and Vacationer's “Turning” off 2018's Mindset. You can read Marc's review of Band on the Run here or listen to our discussion on Mindset in Episode 14. “Factory” utilizes both a Memotron and Theremin. The Theremin also appeared in Lord Huron's “Love Like Ghosts” & “Way Out There” off 2015's Strange Trails, and you can listen to our previous discussion on that record in Episode 2. Michael's writeup on Jimmy Buffett's A1A mentioned during the show can be found here, the finest publication on the site thus far. The Last Bison's Quill, a record Michael felt was similar to “Compliments” since they both are high in character and charm in large part because of their imperfections. Grizzly Bear's Yellow House, the record Marc felt similarly leaned into “everything & the kitchen sink” production. Eagles, a classic rock band Michael could very easily see playing “Laredo” ChrisCorradi's comment on the “bullet in my Kai Lorenzo” lyric on genius.com “Band Of Horses Survived… Barely”, The SPIN interview Marc mentioned where Ben touches on his then-recent separation with his spouse. “Grumpy Old Men” (the 1993 film) and “Old City Bar” by Trans-Siberian Orchestra both evoked similar feelings and visuals in Michael as “Blue Beard”. The Explorer's Club, a classic rock & roll and classic pop-influenced band that Marc found strikingly similar to Band of Horses' experiments in “Blue Beard” and “Dilly”. “I need more cowbell!” Long in the Tooth and Repo Records referenced in the show are Marc's favorite record haunts in the Philly area. Support your local music stores! Marc kept saying “Dilly” was very “70's” but meant to say “60's” (oops). Ludo's “Good Will Hunting by Myself”, the song Michael mentioned takes the stereotypical “I'm better off without you, anyway” attitude from pop breakup songs and cranks it up to a comical extreme. Admiral Fallow, the band Michael mentioned was also sometimes similarly “rough” in vocal delivery like in “Evening Kitchen” and also works because of those edges. Arcade Fire's “We Used To Wait”—which explicitly and intentionally makes the audience “wait” for a final chorus that never again returns—Michael cheekily claimed to be the antithesis to the infinitely repeating chorus in “Older”. “Basement Shows” (also known as “House Shows”), a staple of Philadelphia college life. “Are You My Neightbor?”, a deep cut Marc made to the classic VeggieTales episode. Yes, this was a real thing. Grizzly Bear's “Colorado”, a song Marc found just as boring as “Neighbor”. Yes Michael, I will put it down there. The Arcade Fire lyric Marc was flopping around trying to remember is “Took a drive into the sprawl / To find the house where we used to stay”, where their usage of “house” instead of “home” is meant to communicate emotional distance and lack of attachment to the physical place they grew up. Please use a good podcast player! Rooibos tea is best tea. Premium Steap and August Tea are incredible tea suppliers and are “Marc & Michael Approved”. Don't just drink Lipton and say our tea tastes like soap, anonymous coworker of Michael's. References Listed in order of reference on the show. “We actually started with a tonne of songs—about twenty-five or so—so we didn't even know which ones would make it, or which ones were good or bad really. So you don't really know until you're recording them, because we weren't really playing a lot of them live, so once they're recorded you're like, ‘Okay, this actually sounds like a real song, and this one sounds like a joke'—we're just taking the piss out of some soul song or something, you know? So we kinda learned as we went, like, ‘Oh wow, is what the record sounds like'.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH “‘We have this time off before we gotta go back out on the road again—let's just go do it ourselves. We'll get another engineer… We think we know what the songs sound like—let's just go for it'. And so we were like, “This is actually really fun”. That's when we really discovered we don't have to beat each other up on this, we can just have fun with it and enjoy the process.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH “I did stretch myself pretty much to being broke, at the same time we didn't have to worry about anybody even coming in and hearing mixes or anything, we could really take our time with it.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH “It's the first time the line-up hasn't been this revolving door. With this record it's a real band that I'm part of. No one's going anywhere, everyone's contributing to the songwriting process and this is our coming-out party.” “Band of Horses: Infinite Arms Q&A with Ben Bridwell, Uncut Magazine (archive)” “… But that's the best part about it—the fact that it is a mystery. People get the lyrics wrong—I do that all the time with my favorite songs. You read the lyrics five years later, or hear it differently, and you're like, ‘Oh, I always kinda sang something to that effect when I was singing along, but I didn't really realize what they were talking about', you know? In a way it's like little hints come around and the mystery kinda reveals itself, but the fact that people don't really know is my favorite part, because that's what I appreciate about songs as well.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH [With Regards to “Factory”] “I was listening to a lot of Nick Drake and was really enamored by the string arrangements in his songs. Also, I was trying to make it a bit dramatic sounding in a Bittersweet Symphony kinda way.” “Track-byTrack: Band of Horses' Infinite Arms”, THE SKINNY “I was actually out writing songs for the new record, and I had some crazy stuff going on. That song just kind of ended up tapping me on the shoulder. Even though some of it is a bit maybe too autobiographical for my own tastes, a lot of it dances around subjects like all my songs do. I try not to be too specific.” “Infinite Arms: A conversation with Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell”, Mike Ragogna of HuffPost Entertainment “We got to the point where we were touring so much that nowhere was really home. So I figured, at least if I'm gonna come home after these long stretches of traveling, it would nice to be around my family; my parents, and my brother and sister are having babies. So it was like, when I come home, at least I'm close enough so I get to see them at least twice a year compared to like maybe once a year.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH “This song [‘Infinite Arms'] deals a lot with the major theme of the record, and being the title track that's maybe a little obvious, but this is one I'm not quite ready to unveil the mask on. But I can tell you that it almost didn't make the record.” “Track-byTrack: Band of Horses' Infinite Arms”, THE SKINNY “We went bonkers with Infinite Arms, because we could. It was a challenge to see what we could do, but we also overcooked some shit.” “Band of Horses: Mystery Riders”, Magnet Magazine Art ♫︎

Band of Horses frontman Ben Bridwell talks to morning host Matt Pelsor about the various inspirations for the new album Things are Great; breakups, both personal and within the band, as well as musical inspiration from a hotel room in Iceland. He shares on their decision to produce the record internally, and on his appreciation for being able to play out again; as well as why he's looking forward to coming to Indy specifically. Band of Horses play with Black Keys July 16th at Ruoff Music Center.
Aaron's song picks for the week come from a Seattle-based band led by singer/songwriter Ben Bridwell while Brent spotlights music from one of the most successful Canadian rock groups of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Formed after the break-up of Bridwell's previous band, Carissa's Wierd, Aaron highlights three songs from the group Band Of Horses. Originating in Winnipeg as Chad Allan & The Expressions before a clever marketing ploy permanently altered their name in 1965, Brent looks at three songs from the career of The Guess Who. Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about Things Are Great, the band's first album in six years. The South Carolina rocker discusses how the LP “almost killed him” with no touring, a divorce from his wife, writing a breakup record knowing that his kids might listen, and masking the truth with tricky wordplay. Bridwell goes on to speak on his disdain for the California town of Coalinga, how there could be a follow-up EP of leftover songs, and the pile of covers the band has tracked. Listen to Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell discuss Things Are Great, its heavily personal content, and more. You can also watch the full interview via Consequence.

This week's Talkhouse Podcast features a bit of a lovefest between two titans of the indie-rock world, Lou Barlow and Ben Bridwell. It's a cliche, sure, but Lou Barlow probably doesn't need an introduction around here. A founding member of Dinosaur Jr., he played on that band's formative 1980s albums before not very amicably parting ways with frontman J Mascis. But Barlow found plenty of subsequent success in the 90s with Sebadoh, whose 1994 masterpiece Bakesale is referenced in this chat. Barlow also, weirdly, had kind of a mainstream hit with his side project Folk Implosion—and there's some very interesting, unexpected Folk Implosion news in this podcast that I won't spoil for you. Barlow eventually rejoined Dinosaur Jr. in 2005, and the band has found a fruitful third life, making vital new records. Speaking of vital records, the prolific Barlow has also found time to make new Sebadoh music and solo records. The latest Lou Barlow record came out just last year, and it's called Reason to Live, and there was also an excellent Dinosaur Jr. album from 2021 called Sweep it Into Space. As Ben Bridwell points out in this chat, Lou Barlow has been making music in public for damn near 40 years, while the group that Bridwell leads, Band of Horses, is approaching 20 years now. As you'll hear in this conversation, Bridwell moved from the South to various other cities, ending up in Seattle—and specifically at the legendary Crocodile Cafe—where he played in bands and listened to lots of music. He loved Sebadoh, as did pretty much everybody in the 90s, and it was one of the inspirations for Bridwell to launch Band of Horses, which subsequently found its own substantial fanbase—no surprise considering Bridwell's passionate voice and fantastic songs. Band of Horses hasn't put out a full length in more than five years—blame the pandemic for at least some of that delay—but is just now releasing a great new record that feels a bit more like their early stuff, and they're about to head out on a huge tour supporting the Black Keys. The new album is called Things are Great. It's clear from the very start of this conversation what a huge fan of each other these two guys are—and also that neither of them are very good at accepting compliments. Barlow talks about the magical moment he connected with Bridwell's voice, Bridwell talks about discovering the power of that voice, they talk about how a Camel cigarettes tour brought them together, and eventually, Bridwell makes up his own segment for the Talkhouse Podcast called “rapid fire.” It's a delight. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Lou Barlow and Ben Bridwell for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform and social media service. Oh, and rate us, too—it really does help! Ben talks to Ben: Songwriters on Process interviews Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses.Fun fact: this is not the first time I've interviewed Bridwell. The first was in 2015, when the amazing Sera Cahoone hooked us up with each other.Like most songwriters, Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses has found the past two years to be a bane to his creative process. With few exceptions, songwriters have told me that dark days are not conducive to creativity. As Carl Newman of The New Pornographers said to me, “Some people say that they write best when they're sad or depressed. I don't get that. Because when I'm sad or depressed, I'm crippled beyond writing.'” In our 2019 interview, Jim James of My Morning Jacket decried the myth of the tortured artist. Patterson Hood and Lilly Hiatt told me that they wrote a lot for about a month after the pandemic started, but that was it. Gloominess aside, if your songwriting centers around conversations you hear and people you see, what's there to write about if you hear nothing and see nothing? The pandemic has not been good for Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses. “It did not lead to me writing more stuff. It messed me up,” he told me. Large expanses of time—no touring, after all—have not led to more songwriting. In fact, all this time has made him feel “listless.” The breakup of Bridwell's marriage has made things even tougher, and the freedom to write whenever he wants actually makes him want to write less. “All this freedom makes me push it away,” he says. “I never did that when there was structure. When I had a routine, it was easy to create. Without that, I'm listless.” While Bridwell's creative process may have changed in seven years because of family upheaval, one element remains constant: crossword puzzles. Just as he told me seven years ago, he uses crossword puzzles as a way to explore language and wordplay. The latest album by Band of Horses is called Things are Great.

Tónlistin hefur oft hljómað undir í hinum ýmsu kvikmyndum og þáttum, má þar t.a.m. nefna The O.C., Grey's Anatomy, Twilight, House M.D., Ugly Betty og 90210. Join us this week, as we discuss Band of Horses' 2006 (turns out, debut LP, after an EP), "Everything All the Time." If you love $29,000 refrigerators, majestic arpeggios, bizarre Gene Simmons infomercials, and mid-aughts sweet-sounding (if not-quite profound) proper debut for Ben Bridwell's personal majesty, you should definitely tune in. Shane believes that this band deserves a greatest hits collection, and he could be right. But here, in my estimation, is the genesis of that. Band of Horses released their 5th album in June 2016. In this episode, the band’s frontman, Ben Bridwell breaks down the song Solemn Oath, and how in the process of writing it, he confronted writer’s block, and balancing his life in the band and at home as a husband and father.
Of Horses-Album „Why Are You Ok“ aufzunehmen. >> Artikel zum Nachlesen: https://detektor.fm/musik/album-der-woche-band-of-horses-why-are-you-ok

Infinite Arms, the follow-up to 2007's Cease To Begin, features Ben Bridwell's latest lineup as Band Of Horses. We like it, on the whole, but that doesn't stop us from picking some nits. We also welcome our colleague Jenna Carlesso to the podcast fold.
