All Bones Considered: Laurel Hill Stories #071 for February 2025 - complete   Judge Lynwood Blount became a lawyer by going to night school and rose to be a judge in the Philadelphia criminal justice system. His manner and authoritative presence earned him the nickname “Count Blount.”   Florence DeVida Johnson-Reid came through the ranks to become Dean of Graduate Education and Continuing Education at Cheyney University, but her life was tragically cut short by cancer.   Judge Doris May Harris was only the third Black woman to graduate from Penn Law and became one of the most popular – and controversial – juvenile court judges in the city.   Jack Jones was a devout Roman Catholic from West Philadelphia who wanted to grow up to be famed announcer John Facenda. With Facenda's help, Jones got an early start in a career in broadcast news that ended with him being the first Black anchorperson on local news. He too died tragically young from cancer.   These four, plus information about the legal system in Philadelphia, the education of African American children in Philadelphia since the 1830s, the evolution of Black lawyers in Philadelphia, and the city's Black Roman Catholic population.

Are you looking for strategies to strengthen your donor relationships? Or how to overcome some of the many challenges nonprofits are facing today? In today's episode, we chat with Dr. Mark Scott from the Oishei Foundation, an organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting nonprofits. We dive into how his organization provides support for nonprofits and discuss new demands and challenges nonprofits are facing around staffing shortages, competition with the corporate sector, and the struggle to find good help. Plus, Dr. Scott gives us some strategies to help overcome these obstacles. He also talks about how nonprofits can be more realistic with their overhead costs when submitting grant proposals to funders and how to build better relationships with them. He gives great strategies for strengthening these donor relationships like taking small relationship-building actions over time and how this can help your organization succeed and better serve your community. This episode is full of practical tips nonprofit leaders can take action on today.   About Dr. Mark Scott: Mark joined the Foundation in January 2022 to lead Oishei's philanthropic support practice that is designed to strengthen and support the WNY nonprofit ecosystem. He works closely with Foundation staff to enhance the capacity and work of grantee organizations and community partners. He oversees the Foundation's initiatives in leadership development, network building, and convening, most notably the Karen Lee Spaulding Oishei Fellowship for Leaders of Color, Community Conversations for Leaders of Color, and the Oishei Leader program. Mark holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership and Policy, an MBA from Niagara University, and a BS in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management from Cheyney University in Cheyney, Pennsylvania, the nation's oldest Historically Black College & University (HBCU).   Episode Summary: In this episode, you will learn strategies for strengthening donor relationships and overcoming obstacles in the nonprofit sector, like: Providing support for nonprofit organizations (8:20) Building capacity in your communities (12:05) New demands nonprofits are currently facing (15:00) Overcoming challenges of not being able to find good employees (18:35) Being realistic with overhead costs in grant proposals (22:45) Making the funding process easier (29:05) Tips for nonprofits to build better donor relationships (34:45)   Teasers: “But what we are finding is that because nonprofits stepped up and they had become so heavily dependent on government resources during the COVID pandemic period, they have kind of lost their way.” “Nonprofits really need unrestricted support.” “People are doing nonprofit work and not being paid a living wage. So it's like helping to fight poverty, but being in poverty themselves because they're not making a living wage.” “When we play with the ask, we perpetuate this vicious cycle of undercutting the work.” “If you build that relationship over a period of time, and you don't always have to ask, the funder will see it.”   Huge thank you to our sponsor! On this episode of the PTA Inspire series, Briana sits down with Bryonna Williams to discuss her journey towards becoming a PTA. Bryonna recently passed the NTPE in January 2023 on her 4th attempt! Here's a little bit about Bryonna: "My Journey of success began when I Graduated from Cheyney University, May of 2018 with a Bachelors in Biology. After graduation, I began to think of the career field I wanted to enter into and I knew a career path in Physical Therapy was what I desired most. In July of 2020, I enrolled into PIT and got accepted into there Physical Therapist Assistant Program. I successfully completed and graduated from the program in October of 2021. In January of 2022, I took my first attempt at the NPTE Exam, and unfortunately I did not pass. I was not immediately discouraged, because I had an idea of what to expect for the next time I took the test. I proceeded to take the test an additional two times and still did not pass. I became frustrated, I began to think that maybe I did not enter into the right field and I was making a mistake. That's when I came across Briana on Facebook and watched a few of her free videos. After watching her videos, I Immediately knew her coaching program was for me. Her videos are filled with lots of informative information such as tips and techniques on how to memorize different diagnoses. Briana's coaching program helped me build up my confidence so I can get back on track to pass the NPTE. As of January 2023 , I am now a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant and I have to thank Briana for her amazing coaching program. Thank you PTA Elevation, LLC for providing me with the support and for adding to my success." Bryonna Williams , PTA. Tune in to learn more! He served on multiple Youth & Young Adults leadership opportunities within the UBE organization. Fr. Callender attended Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina and later transferred to Cheyney University, where he received a Bachelors degree in Communications in 2007. In this episode of the Demystifying Diversity Podcast, host Daralyse Lyons explores the value of furthering the growth of diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of the world of sports. In interviews with current and former athletes, coaches and sports industry executives, she uncovers their perspectives and experiences regarding the critical role of sports within society. Through solutions-oriented reporting, this episode examines strategies that have worked to increase DEI, and explores the need for greater interventions to make sports a truly safe and equitable space. In this episode, you will learn about: The importance of representation, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in athletics. How individual choices made by individual people to stand for inclusion can inspire an entire organization's growth in its DEI practices. How personal narratives, as opposed to statistics, play a critical role in changing hearts and minds in the work of making the world a more inclusive place. The role that allyship, along with hard work and grit, can play in breaking through barriers and creating change within organizations. How exposing youth to opportunities within and outside of athletics can serve to diversify workplaces, both inside and outside of the sports world. The economic realities and benefits of having a policy of inclusivity - not only in sports, but in any type of organization. The importance of inclusivity in sports, especially in navigating the end-of-career transition that athletes face. How a focus on inclusivity improves an athlete's mental health and sense of belonging, even after their playing days are over. Our guests in this episode include: Jordan Keesler - a graduate student at Georgia State University whose exploration of the complex relationships between sports policies and identity, with a specific focus on gender, race, and culture illuminate systemic and structural inequities within sports. Their thesis, tentatively titled “Put Me in Coach: The Phenomenology of Trans Masculine NCAA Athlete's Gender,” examines the simultaneous visibility and invisibility of trans folks in athletics. Jordan's insights about this important subject extend beyond their research and are informed by their experiences as a trans athlete who, in college, was affirmed on their cross country team and subjected to active aggression on that same college's softball team. Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir - a Black Muslim basketball player, who has become a national and international icon, recognized as the first Muslim woman in NCAA history to play covered. The innovator behind the campaign Muslim Girls Hoop Too, Bilqis has devoted her career to encouraging Muslim girls to play sports and openly express their faith. A passionate athlete from her earliest memories, Bilquis scored 3,070 points over her high school career, setting the all-time scoring record for the entire state of Massachusetts then went on to attend the University of Memphis and later Indiana State University where, in addition to her on-the-court achievements, she was a Dean's List student. Natalie Fahey - A lifelong athlete who transitioned during her time as a Division 1 Swimmer at University of Southern Illinois-Carbondale. Natalie is now a voice and advocate for the representation and rights of trans athletes across collegiate and amateur athletics. Carla Torosian - An award-winning powerlifter and member of the Blackfeet tribe, Carla is an advocate for both Indigenous athletes and athletes of color. She draws from her experiences in becoming a competitive athlete while growing up on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, and facing scrutiny and discrimination for everything from her socioeconomic upbringing to her appearance. Danielle Evans - Danielle is both a rugby player and holds the title as Miss Brighton 2021. She is the founder and creator of the viral Try Me campaign aimed at empowering people to push past the negative stereotypes to success. Mickey Grace - Mickey started her football journey as an All-City Defensive End at Germantown High school in Philadelphia, PA. She then went on to play Division 1 Women's Rugby at West Chester University. Since making the transition from player to coach, she has served as the acting head coach of Women's Football Alliance Philadelphia team, the Philly Phantomz and still holds a seat on the board. In the off season, Coach Mickey trains numerous elite athletes including 7 Super Bowl champions. She spent 5 years as the Defensive Line and Assistant Coach at Mastery Charter North Football Program, interned for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and acted as a Scouting Apprentice for the LA Rams. This episode of the Demystifying Diversity Podcast follows host Daralyse Lyons as she explores issues concerning representation in sports. In her interviews with current and former athletes, coaches and sports industry executives, she is able to highlight the ways in which the sports world can marginalize, or “other,” its participants and stakeholders, despite holding such a prominent place in our society. In this episode, you will learn about: The importance of representation, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in athletics. The potential burden and scrutiny that can result from being the first person of a marginalized identity group to enter into an academic or athletic arena. The double-bind faced by many trans athletes as they move and perform within their sport, and the ways in which the external challenges they face shape their identity and self-conception as they navigate their gender identity. The power of sports teams to be a voice for change and to eradicate (or perpetuate) discrimination within our society. The pressures that members of minority groups face to conform or modify how they express themselves and their identities in order to “fit in” to the predominantly white-run space that is the sports industry. How sports come from a white nationalist origin, and the far-reaching impact this still has today. The innovator behind the campaign Muslim Girls Hoop Too, Bilquis has devoted her career to encouraging Muslim girls to play sports and openly express their faith. Currently Mickey Grace is the Defensive Assistant for Dartmouth College. Zack James - One of the partners of The Demystifying Diversity Podcast. And, still today, he produces a variety of content and shows featuring former and current professional athletes. Trevor Baptiste - Trevor is a Haitian-American professional lacrosse player and face-off specialist who plays for both the Premier Lacrosse League and the National Lacrosse League. Growing up in a predominantly white community and playing a predominantly white sport, Trevor offers unique experiences in what it means to not only be a minority in his sport of choice, but also in what it means to allow his play on the field to define him, and not his appearance. He offers perspective on how sport can be used to combat racism and other isms. Improving diversity and inclusion and building harmony among different cultures and communities is one of the biggest challenges we need to overcome at all levels of society. Our guest today is a pioneer in advocating for diversity and inclusion. Bo-Dean Sanders, a speaker and the author of the book "Race Against... ...Against Race", joins us to talk about all things diversity. Today's episode is the first of a two-part series with Bo-Dean Sanders, and in today's episode, we work through Bo-Dean's background, culture in his home community, his high school and college years, lessons he learned throughout the years.Growing up in a community of color has its own unique influences that shape one's life path. Throughout his high school years, Bo-Dean realized how some of the systemic issues of the school system affected the student. We dive into how these inequalities ultimately led some students to drop out of school and why women, in general, used to graduate from high school or pursue their higher education more often than men did.Bo-Dean's family and mentors wanted him to pursue an academic career, and they wanted him to go to college. Bo-Dean also wanted to go to college. However, it was because of his love for football rather than the hope of pursuing what his mentors expected of him. We talk about the way he got the opportunity to go to college, his experience at the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, how his sports career advanced through the college years, and how his big dream of being recruited to play for a Division II football team came true.As Bo-Dean advanced in his sports career, his family didn't share the same enthusiasm about it. He talks about the work he had to do in terms of communication in order to make his family agree with his choices. During all these years, Bo-Dean had to work and be teammates with players and coaches from different backgrounds who had different personality traits. Wrapping up the first part of the interview, Bo-Dean shares his thoughts on the challenges he had to face while working with people from diverse backgrounds and what he did to overcome them.

He was a 3-sport star, playing basketball and track, in addition to football. His father played professionally overseas and was actually his basketball coach in College. He had a few schools interested in him coming out of high school, however they wanted him to play a position other than wide receiver. When it was time to chose, he decided to go to Cheyney University. He performed well there, however a conflict with the new coaching staff that arrived, caused him to decide to transfer. His time at California University of Pennsylvania was not the best due to injuries and courses availability. Resigned to starting life after football, he got a call from the Rams which led to him making the team. From there, he made stops in Detroit and Carolina, before spending time in the Arena League with San Jose. In the never-ending evidence that elections have consequences, Wednesday evening the right-wing dominated Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Governor Tony Evers’s stay-at-home order unconstitutional. Following the ruling, the Tavern League of Wisconsin told all its members to open their pubs asap. Soon social media was filled with pictures of packed bars with zero social distancing. The grand experiment has begun. Governor Evers could only say, “We’re in the Wild West now.”   Dr. Anthony Fauci - one of the few trusted voices on the White House’s coronavirus task force, testified remotely before the Senate this week. Fauci told Senators that a spike in deaths should be expected if states begin to reopen without the proper protocols and protections in place.   Public higher education is on the chopping block across the U.S. as disaster capitalist politicians use the cover of the COVID-19 pandemic to institute mass layoffs and budget cuts. The deepest cuts so far may be those at Missouri Western State University, which may make it easier for other state university systems to do the same.  Shanna Danielson, who is running for State Senate in the 31st district, got a big endorsement this week from Auditor General Eugene DePasquale. In his endorsement, DePasquale “Shanna is smart, hard-working and brings the highest level of integrity. She will be a state senator we can depend on to lead, for our families and our community.” Danielson is taking on corporate shill, Mike Regan, and is running strong on her support for working families and a state government that focuses on people first.  Pennsylvania is not immune from the deep cuts in higher education. Local faculty union presidents at Kutztown University and Cheyney University were notified that their administrations are considering eliminating adjunct, tenure-track, and tenured faculty. Of course, Raging Chicken has been covering PASSHE’s deceptive budget and accounting practices for years. As the state budget battles prepare to heat up, it does not look so good for Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities.  Trump visited a medical equipment supplier in the Lehigh Valley on Thursday. His landing at the Lehigh Valley International Airport was greeted with a huge caravan of cars protesting Trump’s visit. The action was organized by Make the Road. One of the signs from the caravan summed up the message: “Trump Failed 3,943 Pennsylvanians dead from COVID.” Of course, there were also dozens of Trumpistas lining Industrial Boulevard in Upper Macungie Township. Most were not wearing masks.  And, of course, today is the big ReOpen PA rally in Harrisburg, underway as I record this. Early images look like every other Trump rally. My favorite sign so far is “Fear is a Liar.”  A 24-year-old man in Perkasie, PA - yes, my neck of the woods - punched a female store clerk in the face several times after she insisted he wears a mask in the store.  NASA researchers have identified a string of lava tubes in the Hellas Planitia area of Mars that may prove promising for a future Martian base. Lava tubes would help protect astronauts from the relentless solar radiation.  One of the largest pieces of space junk landed back on Earth on Monday. The 18-ton empty core stage from a Chinese rocket launched on May 5, passed directly over Los Angeles and Central Park in NYC before landing in the Atlantic Ocean.  Free Will Brewing rolled out its new online store and began to ship to all PA addresses. Sun Servants - that tasty Helles Lager - is back in stock and ready for shipping. I’ll have a report back on their Sweet Cherry Vanilla Mash. You can check out their story at FreeWillBrewing.store. You can order online and pick up at the main brewery in Perkasie, or have them ship it to you. Get together with some friends and order $125 or more and you’ll get free shipping too.

Historically, African Americans, by law, were not allowed to enroll in institutions we now know as predominantly white institutions. Thus, they had to create their own institutions. Many decades later, the constant fight and need to bring awareness still exists. The debate about Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) and Predominately White Institutions (PWI) are becoming more talked about and calling for a much-needed conversation about which type of institution a black student should attend and is one better than the other. Conversations and Cocktails with the Crew podcast take a look at their personal experiences that include: the reason for choosing an HBCU, college experience, life after college and the importance of attending an H.B.C.U.   According to the 2018 Study Breaks, "Black students who attend HBCU's feel that black students who attend PWI's aren’t getting a true “black experience” and are sellouts." The Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is the oldest HBCU in the United States, founded in 1837. This institution lead the way aspiring black students with a safe, comfortable and healthily familiar place to attain the highest level of education possible. Though vastly underfunded, black institutions of higher education continue to produce some of the highest numbers of black pharmacists, Ph.D.’s and scientists. However, shortly thereafter, black people were allowed at PWI’s in underrepresented numbers and continue to make up a very small percentage of PWI’s. On the contrary, due to the ease of access into HBCU’s from lower admission requirements and test scores, black students at PWI’s believe their curriculum is far more rigorous than HBCU’s, thus making their degrees of higher value. In addition, they believe that PWI’s makes them more acclimated to “the real world” and in corporate settings, which see white people as the racial majority. There’s truth in both arguments but the division it has caused within the black community makes the argument completely pointless. Although many wish to debate on whose educational experience is more valuable or culturally relevant, HBCUs have played and continues to play an integral role in the social, educational, political and economic development of the black community.   Grab your college crew, cocktails and let's talk?  --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/candcwiththecrew/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/candcwiththecrew/support

There are so few people, and you can attest to this, in this town that we can speak of as friends for almost 50 years. That's to be treasured as far as I'm concerned, man. A Ockershausen: What we've found out when we brought back the idea of Our Town, was the talk about Our Town to people, and everybody was saying, "well gee, I haven't heard from him." Or, "I didn't know he did that. Gee that's just great." So we've been so fortunate to have people such as Jim Vance. And really thinking that Our Town is special. Jim Vance: Right. A Ockershausen: And even though he was born in Pennsylvania? And he went to school in Pennsylvania, and he went to Cheyney University. I didn't know that, Cheyney University is part of the state system isn't it? Jim Vance: It used to be. When I was there it was one of the 12 state teachers' colleges. And I need to say, because I need to make the alum proud, Cheyney in fact is the first HBCU in the country. It wasn't founded as Cheyney, because it was founded as a trade school for black people in America by the Quakers. In I think, if I'm not mistaken 1837. Now there are some of the other HBCUs every time I say that, they raise their hand or raise their fist and say, "no, we were first, because you weren't really a college then." Or whatever the case may be. I say to hell with them. Cheyney is the first HBCU in the country and I am so proud to have been there. And may I say that, I am also so proud of the graduates of Cheyney. Ed Bradley and I, late of 60 Minutes- A Ockershausen: I was at a recent party that was a salute to you. And Ed Bradley was the main speaker. I was there. Jim Vance: Yeah, you remember that? A Ockershausen: A special night. Jim Vance: But he and I went to Cheyney together at the same time, played ball together, lived together. I was the best man at his first wedding. He was the best man at my first wedding. And we've each had a couple or three, but anyway ... We hold that in common as well. Anyway, I am so proud of him and of all the other graduates of Cheyney State. It's now called Cheyney University, but for all of who ... I came out in '64, so for all of us were there back in the day, it's still Cheyney State. A Ockershausen: Jim, that's well over 50 years ago. But you were born in Ardmore. Is Ardmore on the main line? I see it in my mind's eye? Jim Vance: You know what?

Junious Ricardo Stanton interviews Professor E. Sonny Harris the convenor and co-founder of Heeding Cheyney's Call a broad based coalition of alumni, current and former faculty, students, and HBCU advocates who have come together to save and enhance Cheyney University the oldest institution of higher learning for African-Americans in the United States. The historic university has been the victim of a deliberate campaign of underfunding, neglect and discrimination for decades. Despite several court suits and Federal government intervention the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has on a bi-partisan basis refused to fund and support Cheyney University which prompted Heeding Cheyney's Call to file a federal lawsuit on October 29, 2014 to seek redress and remedy. Dr. E. Sonny Harris shares the background and issues at stake with Junious Ricardo Stanton a CHeyney alumnus and co-founder of Heeding Cheyney's Call.
