This week's guest is Tricia Tuttle, the Head of Directing Fiction at NFTS and former Director of BFI Festivals, where she led on both LFF and Flare.  She announced her departure from the role in October 2022, after 10 years at the BFI as Festivals Director and Deputy Head of Festivals. Prior to that, she held the post of film and skills programme manager at BAFTA and events producer at London's The Script Factory.  We talk about her early and passionate love of cinema, moving to London from North Carolina, discovering an interest in exhibition and audiences, her time as Director of Festivals at the BFI, instating a creative vision as well as galvanising a team to deliver LFF and Flare year after year, as well as how she designs and delivers a curriculum at NFTS that equips a next generation of directors and offers a broad range of models for creativity and success and how she seeks out new challenges in her career. Tricia is the kind of guest I created Best Girl Grip to speak to - she's someone I've admired and been inspired by from afar for many years, especially when I started working at the BFI and attending both LFF and Flare with almost crazed commitment. In fact I started going regularly in 2016 so many of my best memories of the festival happened while Tricia was overseeing it, all of which to say this was a special one for me and I hope you enjoy listening.   SHOW NOTES LFF Screen Talk with Jane Campion LFF Screen Talk with Celine Sciamma Find out more about the BFI Flare x BAFTA mentorship programme and apply now for the next edition! Today on What's My Frame? I'm joined by director and writer Laura Scrivano. I had the joy of meeting and working with Laura earlier this year on the set of WEDDING SEASON. Laura began her career in theatre; that ease of communicating with actors along with her composure and attention to detail while filming in an electric and at moments wild active casino was nothing short of impressive! Today we'll dive into what intrigued Laura about the HULU & Disney+ genre busting series as well as some behind the scenes stories. Laura is an Italian-Australian filmmaker now based in London. She shares details of her journey to become a working director. She speaks honestly about the challenges and limitations female creatives often face and what can be done to create an equal playing field going forward. Outside her work on WEDDING SEASON, Laura also directed two episodes of sci-fi drama THE LAZARUS PROJECT, and is also working on her debut feature as writer/director. She began her career in theatre, directing productions at Belvoir St, Australian Theatre for Young People and Opera Australia; and creating digital content for Sydney Theatre Company under the artistic directorship of Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton. Laura's work has been described as ‘beautifully honest' (The Guardian), ‘mind blowing' (The Times), ‘groundbreaking' (Sydney Morning Herald), and ‘inspirational' (PromoNews). She was named as "Ones to Watch" for the Edinburgh TV Festival 2020-2021. A graduate of the Australian Film, Television & Radio School (AFTRS) in both directing and screenwriting, her shorts have screened at festivals internationally, including BFI Flare, Sundance, Oberhausen, Aesthetica, Cyprus Film Days, Cinema des Antipodes at Festival de Cannes and New York Fashion Week. We're in love. It started with a Water Lilies in 2007. Our love grew stronger with Tomboy in 2011. We were devoted by the time Girlhood came around in 2014. And now, well, we scarcely know what to do with ourselves. This month we've dedicated an entire episode of our podcast to Céline Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire, the film that has set the roof alight with all those fire emojis. Twitter is burning! Sciamma's fourth film as a director took Cannes by storm back in 2019, earning standing ovations and taking home the Queer Palme. Earlier this year it was nominated at the BAFTAs, having already stolen our hearts.Over the course of the show, you'll get expert insights on Céline Sciamma's career up to this point. We'll hear from the director herself all about the inspiration for the film, the title and that stunning choral number. Modern day portrait artist, Nina Mae Fowler, tells us about the reality of portraiture. And we find out from academic Jennie Batchelor just what it was like for women artists in the 18th century. The podcast is hosted by Steph Watts. It is produced by Ryan Hewitt and Jake Cunningham, edited by Mark Towers, and scripted by Jake Cunningham and Steph Watts. With thanks to all of our contributors, and a special thanks to Kelly Powell, Louisa Maycock and Irene Musumeci.WITH THANKS TO OUR SPECIAL GUESTS:Céline SciammaCéline Sciamma is a French filmmaker, a director and writer.
