After one sleepless night around his 17th birthday, Joey began to fear the next night. Soon, thoughts about sleep followed him through the day. For July's episode we discuss our favourite songs of 1983, so we've got lots of goth, synthpop, metal titans, electro, industrial, and beautiful ambient soundscapes. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Faith is an old-fashioned word. Maybe its most well-known meaning is religious. But true faith predates religion. Ancient humans had faith in the earth, the animals, the stars.  I don't know much about that kind of faith, but I do know one thing: that I have faith in my own heart and mind, and in yours. I have faith in our ability to love, and to care, and to see, moment by moment, that we're all just here for a moment, and that we're all in this together – whatever is happening, and there's a lot. And I guess I know one more thing: the power of that kind of faith to inspire – quietly, stealthily – and to move friends and family onto more stable, peaceful, ground.  So this Saturday, this Fourth of July – and I'd say especially this one – here's an invitation: bring your love. I listened to every album by Laughing Hyenas. Formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan by John Brannon (of hardcore punk band Negative Approach) and Larissa Strickland (of L-Seven) in 1984, Laughing Hyenas were a noise rock band who fused elements of garage rock, punk, blues, and Birthday Party insanity. You might have heard that the U.S. turns 250 this year. It's a big, corporate to-do — the phrase “America 250” is plastered all over baseball hats and bags of potato chips. But what do Americans really make of this anniversary? The historian Jill Lepore and audiomaker Sophie Crane wanted to find out.
