Tonight's Jazz Feature is an iconic album by master drummer Roy Haynes with a hand picked quartet of amazing musicians. The album was issued on Impulse Records and recorded in May of 1962 and usually always makes the list of 100 best Jazz albums. The group that Roy picked was unique beginning with Roland (aka Rahsaan) Kirk on all of his horns: tenor saxophone, manzello, stritch, and flutes, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Henry Grimes and of course Roy Haynes. The album consists of four well selected standard tunes and 3 originals by Haynes. With this album we celebrate Roy's 99 years on the planet and his huge contribution to Jazz history and a life well lived. Roy was born in Boston on March 13,1925 and died on November 12,2024 peacefully ay his home in Nassau County New York,

“Dreams do come true.” That's how Greg sums up this episode, as he and Nate talk with master drummer Jack DeJohnette about an incredible recording made in the spring of 1966. Featuring a ferocious quartet co-led by pianist McCoy Tyner and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, it captures each of those giants at a turning point in his career. Blue Note Records will release this album, Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs', on Nov. 22. (Nate contributed the main liner notes.) In our far-reaching conversation, Jack reflects on what makes this recording special; the dynamics between the musicians in the band, including bassist Henry Grimes; and the secret to keeping one's composure in the midst of a musical storm.Support WRTI: https://bit.ly/2yAkaJsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Jazz feature tonight is an album that this writer deems an essential Jazz album. "Out of the Afternoon" presents drum master Roy Haynes leading a very special quartet. Mr. Haynes just celebrated his 99th Birthday recently. Roy presents a young up and coming phenomena called Roland Kirk on tenor saxophone, manzello (an elongated alto saxophone) and the stritch (a soprano saxophone variant) and the flute and various whistles. Roland is a creative force here and a one-man band sometimes blowing all 3 horns at once! On piano is Tommy Flanagan and on bass is the great Henry Grimes. This album issued first on Impulse Records is a true classic and one for the ages. Tonight's Jazz feature "Out of the Afternoon".
Badass pianist talks about working with Henry Grimes, Dee Dee Bridgewater and being part of this great American musical lineage.
"The Truth Is Marching In" Albert Ayler: Live In Greenwich Village. The Complete Impulse Recordings (Impulse! Rec. 1966 - 1967) Albert Ayler, Don Ayler, Michael Sampson, Bill Folwell, Henry Grimes, Beaver Harris. The complete ORTF recordings (Elemental Music, 2022). To mark the beginning of our third season, we start right where we left off, with a vernal equinox walk in the woods. As we make our way on the trail, we'll discuss the meanings and histories of this threshold into spring, and feature a variety of ways that the equinox is celebrated around the world. Special thanks to David Brandon Ross for composing and performing the meditation featured at the end of the episode. David Brandon Ross (he/him) holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music Boston, MA as well as a degree in mechanical design from SUNY Corning, NY. He studied theater with Charles Combs at Berklee and also trained at Dell'arte school of physical theater in Blue Lake California. It's been a tough year for New York. This episode we check in with Geng, the man behind one of our favorite labels, Purple Tape Pedigree, and see how these fine “purveyors of weaponized media and information” are handling the pandemic and the uprisings. With live performance no longer an option, the model of mutual support demonstrated by a crew like PTP is all the more important. Geng tells us about the history of PTP, the benefits of peer-support, community activism, and why it's more important now than ever to understand hip hop as spiritual music.
It’s been a tough year for New York. Geng tells us about the history of PTP, the benefits of peer-support, community activism, and why it’s more important now than ever to understand hip hop as spiritual music. Interview recorded between Montreal and Queens, May 2020 and January 2021 Produced and mixed in Montreal, February 2021 Read more at: http://acloserlisten.com/2021/02/19/sp-episode-17-before-the-internet-with-geng-ptp-podcast TRACKLIST ARTIST – “TITLE” (ALBUM, LABEL, YEAR) Milford Graves with Sunny Morgan – – “Nothing 19” (Percussion Ensemble, ESP Disk, 1965) INTRO Raekwon/RZA – “Ice Cream (instrumental)” (Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, Loud, 1995) Amani + King Vision Ultra – “An Unknown Infinite” (An Unknown Infinite, PTP, 2020) King Vision Ultra – “excerpts from B Side” (Pain of Mind, PTP, 2018) Amani + King Vision Ultra – “Guillotine” (An Unknown Infinite, PTP, 2020) Milford Graves, Marshall Allen, Henry Grimes – “(live excerpt)” (Angel Orensanz Center / Arts for Art – 4 Dec 2012) Geng – “Iron Man (Chopped _ Slowed by Geng)” (Screwing Yourself To Live: A Chopped & Slowed Tribute To Black Sabbath, PTP, 2012) YATTA – “Bliss” (WAHALA, PTP, 2019) Dis Fig – “Excerpt” (An Atypical Brain Damage, PTP, 2018) Moor Mother – “This Week (Feat. Next week's episode is going to be about trumpeter Don Cherry. In anticipation of that, and to tie it to last week's episode about Henry Grimes, this episode showcases Cherry's Symphony for Improvisers, which also features Grimes (*and Pharoah Sanders on piccolo, which I left out in the VO... Oops!) . Enjoy and check back next week for the full Don Cherry episode
This week's episode is about the bassist Henry Grimes. Grimes was a Juliard-trained musician, who took an interest in free jazz in the 1960's, who disappeared from the music world for three and a half decades. It features music from his early, conventional playing, from the peak of the free jazz movement, and music he made during his triumphant return in the 2000's. Questions? Comments? Requests? email me at WNPMPod@gmail.com
On April 15, bassist Henry Grimes passed away. I will have a full episode about his life and music ready for next week. In the meantime, enjoy some of his poetry and a track from Spirits Aloft, his live album with drummer Rashied Ali. Questions? Comments? Requests? E-mail me: WNPMPod@gmail.com

Don Cherry of course is associated with Ornette Coleman but this album shows us by 1965, he was his own man on the trumpet and as a composer. This wonderful album done for Blue Note Records who by the mid-60s had opened it's doors to some of the more adventurous Jazz players like Cecil Taylor, Andrew Hill, Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman and of course Don Cherry. Cherry put together a great quartet with newcomer Leandro "Gato" Barbieri from Argentina on tenor saxophone, Henry Grimes on bass and the always creative Edward Blackwell on drums. Two compositions make up the date and both are mini-suites. The first is "Complete Communion" and the second is called "Elephantasy" both are divided into various movements. Freedom and cohesion dominate this date and the band sounds as if it's having fun. There is a wonderful joy and dancing quality to the music along with more introspective moments too. Complete Communion is a gem in Don Cherry's discography.
Il suo triplo Lp The Abissity of The Ground va esaurito e diventa di culto.

A special edition of the Spanish Jazz radio show 'Club de Jazz' where we conducted an interview with Marc Ribot. The list of musicians with whom Marc Ribot (Newark, 1954) has worked is just mind-boggling: from Tom Waits to Elvis Costello to Marianne Faithfull to many others. Ever since the 1980s, Ribot has been part of the most creative New York musical scene, from the time when he played with the John Lurie's Lounge Lizards. Today, Ribot is well known not only for his collaborations with John Zorn, but also as the leader of several projects, like his trio (with Chad Taylor and Henry Grimes), as well as the bands Los Cubanos Postizos and Ceramic Dog. The interview was originally broadcasted on November, 8th 2016. All rights reserved: http://www.elclubdejazz.com

A "desert island" disc. This was a short-lived band that performed a few gigs in the New York area then for two afternoons in May of 1962 went into the studio to record this date. The leader was the redoubtable Roy Haynes with Henry Grimes on bass and Tommy Flanagan on piano. They are at their very best but what makes this date unique and special is the front man...Rahsaan Roland Kirk on tenor saxophone, manzello (a soprano saxophone), the stritch (an elongated alto saxophone) and his distinctive flute and other paraphernalia. The well chosen repertoire includes three Haynes originals and four standards that have never been overplayed. When you hear this date you will understand why it is on many people's "desert island" records.

This album is on so many people's "desert island discs". This classic was recorded over two dates in May of 1962. The band worked a few engagements around the New York area then went into the studio. Roy Haynes, who is now 86 years old is one of the wonders of the world as he is still playing as well, if not better than he was when he was much younger. He is amazing, as usual on this recording. Mr. Haynes for most part as a bandleader has always led groups with this simple instrumentation: saxophone, piano, bass and drums. This group was exceptional in that the saxophonist is Roland Kirk, who later became known as Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Kirk, who is blind lived in a world of sound. He plays three saxophones at once and has other instruments strung around his neck and also plays flute and clarinet. We hear some of his work on this record. He plays, flute, manzello (a type of soprano saxophone in Bb) and the stritch (a straight alto saxophone in Eb) plus his tenor saxophone. He are happy that Mr. Kirk visited this planet because there has been none other like him. On piano is "the poet of the piano", the late Tommy Flanagan. His sparkling lines highlight this session. Henry Grimes is on bass and at age 26 had already played with Charles Mingus, when Mingus preferred to play piano, also Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk and singer, Anita O'Day. This special band led by the redoubtable Mr. Haynes delivers on all 7 tunes. Four are standards that have not been overplayed and the remaining three are compositions (rare) by Roy Haynes. All in all a classic by a once in a lifetime group. Mr."Snap Crackle" lives!!!

This recording was the second album recorded in 1966 for Blue Note by the iconoclastic pianist/composer Cecil Taylor. Taylor's music has always posed a challenge to the listener as his music is dense and often seems arrhythmic. His ensembles or bands that he calls "Units" pose even more of a challenge. Not only does the listener have to hear Taylor's always busy playing but one has to hear the bassists and drummers as well as the horns that weave in and out and solo at length. This recording features members of his working unit. The wonderful alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons is heard to good advantage here. Lyons was to Taylor what Charlie Rouse was to Thelonious Monk. Trumpeter Bill Dixon, who along with Taylor was one of the movers and shakers of so-called avant-guard Jazz was not a regular Unit member but he fit so well with Lyons in the ensemble passages and solos very effectively. Two bassists work hand in glove with Alan Silva playing mostly arco (bowed) and Henry Grimes plucking the bottom lines. Drummer Andrew Cyrille understands Taylor's unique rhythmic sence. Taylor many years before this recording had abandoned 4/4 time and other Jazz signatures and yet his music pulses with rhythms. "Conquistador" IS a challenge but if you listen to Taylor's music with the same intensity that he delivers it you will be amply rewarded. There is lyricism and beauty in this recording and all it need is your ears. Taylor was 81 on March 15,2010 and he is still creating and performing....Happy Birthday Cecil!
Jason Crane interviews pianist Luis Perdomo. Since coming to New York from his native Venezuela, Perdomo has blossomed as a player. As a student at the Manhattan School of Music and at Queens College, he studied with pianists Harold Danko and Sir Roland Hanna. As a professional musician, he's played with Ray Baretto, Ravi Coltrane, Miguel Zenon, Dafnis Prieto, and Timbalaye, to name a few. Perdomo's adventurous new record is Awareness (RKM Music, 2006). It features his working trio of Hans Glawischnig on bass and Eric McPherson on drums, and on several tracks, an expanded group with bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Nasheet Waits.
