My dear audience, it's finally time (after a small delay) to face your destiny and hear all about the greatest warrior of a generation…the one and only: Wendy Wu! It's a movie that many remember fondly, including one of the hosts, but there is a lot going on here. Frankly the whole thing has left us a little shook, but take a listen and find out for yourself everything this movie has to offer. Oh, and don't ask about why this episode has such a lame title. All questions of that nature can be directed to Emma. Luke gets to flex his power ranger knowledge and feels a little embarrassed. Emma gives some culinary insight and feels cheated out of the big dance. Marcus, Luke, Vish and Jim settle in for another blockbuster Barclays weekend off the back of more midweek madness. We've realised that Pep Guardiola's biggest fan is in fact Erik ten Hag - now that is Manchester, united. Standing on the shoulders of giants (Brendy and Pip and everyone else who did the podcast before us) means we have reached episode 200 of The Electronic Show podcast! Wowzer! Thanks for being with us for this record-breaking feat. We asked for suggestions and received many excellent ones, but in the end we went with a suggestion from Jonathon which, at the time we recorded, I did not realise would be instantly revealed by the episode title. Cheers to you all! For such a potentially ridiculous theme, the lads have brought some quite serious and sensible suggestions to the table. I can't apologise enough. We do have a long discussion about Banana Man, and this week our Cavern Of Lies is a lovely special reader mailbag which I unfortunately introduce in an accidentally insulting way.
Dr. Brenda Davy joins us to talk about what we drink and why it matters - from hydration, to fluoridation, to weight management. Dr. Davy is a Professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise at Virginia Tech. She earned her PhD in Human Nutrition and MS in Exercise Physiology and is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). Her areas of expertise include obesity and body weight regulation; water and beverage intake and health; diet and cardiovascular diseases; and dietary intake assessment. This episode spans a wide range of topics including how beverages impact energy intake, how to stay hydrated, and how to make beverage choices that support your lifestyle and body weight goals. As always, we look behind the curtain to see how science is done, and how real scientists put their knowledge into practice. Note: This conversation does not address controversial aspects of weight management like the harmful impacts of diet culture and weight stigma. Marcus, Vish and Jim are here to chew over the latest round of Christmas crackers, with Southampton and Arsenal picking up impressive wins. But should we actually trust either team with them?Elsewhere, Man City and Leicester played out a ridiculous game - even if Brendy should've put himself on the bench. Harry Kane also impressed against Patrick's Palace, especially after what we assume was a fairly awkward Christmas for the Kane family.Tweet us @FootballRamble and email us here: show@footballramble.com.***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Radio B - Exclusive (Brendy) 15.04.2021 by Radio B
Brendan Rodgers and Leicester have another trophy! Brendy's Bottlers didn't bottle it as a Youri Tielemans' strike handed them a 1-0 victory over Chelsea! We talk about some interesting details from Rodgers' pre match preparations and give a shout out to Khun Top for being one of the best club owners in the Premier League.Ferran Torres scored a hattrick in City's narrow 3-4 victory over Newcastle, and Mukesh was left vinidcated for having Ferran Torres in his FPL team, and as captain no less! Scott Carson made a rare appearance, flaunting his glorious dad bod. Keepers had a lovely time in the gameweek as Alisson scored from a corner in the 95th minute to give Liverpool a 2-1 victory over West Brom, and Mukesh can't stop watching those highlights! Also, we talk about the La Liga and Ligue 1 title races as Atletico and LOSC Lille get set for some celebrations! If there’s a woman on TV having relationship problems, you better believe there's a sassy gay stereotype giving her wise and insightful advice. In the early naughties, the gay best friend almost became a sign of status for the cultured, inner-city lady. We're talking about families in games this week. Brendan likes the Mishima family from Tekken, who throw each other into volcanoes. Sin prefers the simple life of the Sims, and Matthew enjoys the magical tales of the Finch family in What Remains of Edith Finch. We've also been playing stuff. Children of Morta continues the family theme with some dungeon crawling. Gears 5 has some mother-daughter tension as well. A 'poof' is a slur for a male homosexual, but can extend to any man whose manner or behaviour doesn't conform to what is conventionally regarded as masculine, and the word 'Poofta' made it's way into Australian slang and spread like wildfire, thanks to our homophobic Aussie forefathers. Some words in the queer vernacular that were once harmful slurs have been partially reclaimed and now act as verbal pillars of strength. Many words are rooted in stereotypes, but just as many allow LGBT+ people to express freedoms we've worked hard to attain. But what exactly is serving realness? How exactly does one “slay”? What does it mean to be “femme” and what's the difference between a bear and a twink?Welcome to Word of The Gay, a weekly podcast dissecting common words in the queer lexicon. Hosts Brendy and Leni will tackle a new word every week, taking a deep dive into its origin, contemporary usage, how it's used in pop culture and how its perceived by different members of our community. This episode's Word of the Gay is: Beats! The dance style of Vogue was born out of the Harlem ball scene of the 70's and 80's in New York City. Performed to house and disco music, the style is made up of sharp, angular moves imitating the models seen lining the pages of Vogue magazine. Leni and Brendy pay tribute to the art form, from Madonna's mainstreaming with her hit song, to it's cultural influence on the marginalised communities of black, latin, gay and trans people competing in their many drag houses. Though not used as much today, asking someone if they were a "friend of Dorothy" was a secret code for queer people beginning in the 1940's. Said to be inspired by two iconic Dorothy's of the first half of the 20th century - poet and writer Dorothy Parker and Dorothy Gale from the classic The Wizard of Oz - referring to Dorothy was a way to stay safe when announcing one's homosexuality in a dangerous and illegal period. Leni and Brendy dissect the queer themes of The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland's impact on the gay community and how the US Navy tried to track down Dorothy thinking she was an actual real person. A common stereotype for the way lesbians begin relationships involves an actual moving vehical. Born out of a one-off joke by Orange Is The New Black's Lea DeLaria, the notion of lesbian couples 'U-hauling' has well and truly stuck, but is it just a stereotype? Or is there a scientific explaination for this kind of intense attachment? Leni and Brendy explore the urge to merge, discount claims the stereotype is a result of stunted sexual development as a teenager and compare it to a higher degree of non-monogamous males.
