For Episode 11, we sat down with Dr. Melanie Bechard (she/her) who is a pediatric emergency physician and an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa. She is currently the Chair of Canadian Doctors for Medicare, a nonpartisan organization of physicians advocating for an equitable, evidence-based, and sustainable health care system. In this episode we talk about the issues facing the Canadian healthcare system, limitations that come with privatization, and potential pathways to explore to alleviate the strain primary care physicians are facing. We would like to thank Kameela Alibhai for founding the FMWC podcast and leading the production of all the episodes to date. The podcast committee has lost an exceptional leader, but we wish her the very best as she starts her journey as a surgical resident in Toronto!

And as we enter a summer Covid wave, how much worse could it get? GUEST: Dr. Katharine Smart, paediatrician and president of the Canadian Medical Association
The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Radley: A dealer in rock memorabilia and two other men are charged with scheming to sell the allegedly ill-gotten, handwritten lyrics to ‘Hotel California' and other hits by the Eagles. Canada's labour minister says addressing a serious shortage of skilled trades workers is one of the federal government's “top priorities.” Yesterday, Seamus O'Regan toured a job site in downtown Hamilton, where the Labourers International Union of North America (LIUNA) is building almost 600 rental units within two towers across King Street from Gore Park. Ottawa Redblacks' quarterback Jeremiah Masoli released a statement on Twitter criticizing the Saskatchewan Roughriders and defensive tackle Garrett Marino following the aftermath of his illegal hit this past weekend at Mosaic Stadium. The Toronto Blue Jays have fired manager Charlie Montoyo. We were prepared for the Bank of Canada to hike the interest rate again but not by this much! The BoC has increased its benchmark interest rate by a full percentage point, in an effort to tame the decades-high levels of inflation. Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario's top doctor, has announced that fourth COVID-19 dose eligibility is being expanded to the aged 18 and older population starting July 14 at 8 a.m. The expanded vaccine eligibility will now include Ontarians who are 18 to 59 years old. Let's take a look at NHL Free Agency as the frenzy continues. The meeting of Canada's premiers has ended in Victoria, B.C. The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson... One of CHML's reporters was out and about to see what was going down at the gatherings around Hamilton in support of the convoy as it rolled through Hamilton, what did he see? What is the U.S. perspective on Canada's vaccine mandate, its affect on the trucking industry, and the convoy? Canada will extend its military training mission in the Ukraine, Operation Unifier, for three years, as well as provide non-lethal equipment, enhanced intelligence sharing and resources to defend against cyber attacks. The trucking convoy has earned a lot of attention in the media – despite what some believe – but it has been a tough balance to strike, covering the news while not riling up extremists and giving some parties exactly the sort of fuel that they want. How do we engage with stories like this in 2022, and what are the biggest challenges? The pandemic has intensified existing troubles with the Canadian healthcare system. We already have a public/private mix but is there more that could be done? The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson First Betty White, then Sidney Poitier, and now 2022 has taken Bob Saget at age 65, today Scott remembers the stand-up comic with help from TV expert Bill Brioux. COVID has made the limits of the Canadian healthcare system explicitly clear to the public and now people are questioning how we can make it better. Can we keep taping it together, or are radical changes necessary? Naturally, we also need to change how we deal with China, and Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly agrees. Dr. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng is the founder of the Resource Optimization Network and a critical care and palliative care physician. He is also the host of the Solving Healthcare Podcast. He is also Canadian, so we discuss the Canadian Healthcare System, which, on its surface, looks like a comprehensive, all encompassing, federally administered single-payor system, like what some of the democrats are discussing in the US. We discuss why this is not the case, and get into some of the details about what isn’t covered, how it is more of a provincial system and what are the differences in provinces. We discuss how the money flows through the system and how private insurance can play a role in some ancillary services. And true to the name of his podcast, at the end, we solve healthcare. Dr. Kyeremanteng was born and raised in Edmonton where he did his medical school at the University of Alberta. He and his wife then moved to Ottawa where he did his Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Ottawa followed by a two-year fellowship program in Palliative Care and Critical Care. He stayed after his training and is now an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care and Critical Care Medicine. He also has research positions with Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) & Institut du-savoir Montfort as a Senior Clinician Investigator. His academic interests include the integration of Palliative Care in the Intensive Care Unit as well as health services research and cost evaluations. More information regarding his current research interests and projects can be found here.
