Today's guest is Somya Agrawal, Leader, Collaborator and Motivator. I had the joy of meeting Somya in June 2024, when she joined us for a Walking Partnerships day in Surrey, in the UK.Somya offers valuable insights into: Being the conductor and not the trumpet player - The difficult transition between manager and leader, how the role changes and the importance of building a high-functioning team. The ripple effect - leading by example - The importance of watching and learning from leaders around you and how we are always being watched, even when we think nobody is watching! Dare to enter the arena - How we foster a culture of openness, transparency, honesty and collaboration. Ask questions and challenge with kindness and curiosity. It is not what you say, but how you say that it matters. We discuss the People, Places, and Experiences that have shaped Somya and made her the person and leader she is today: People - "My parents, sisters and my tribe" Places - "Around the world. My family's travelling style and how it reinforced the importance of teamwork"Experiences - "The loss of my father and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro"Somya's key encouragements to Leaders: ENGAGE - establish a rapport with your team and build trust which will allow you to be your authentic self. With passion for your purpose, you will be able to identify the best people for the job.ENABLE - use your energy to have an impact on those around you to bring people to the table who also understand your vision, as nothing is done without collaboration.EMPOWER - by engaging with energy and by enabling with empathy, you will lead a team that feels empowered. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. So remember to enjoy it and take your team with you.Connect with Somya:LinkedIn - Somya AgrawalAbout Somya Agrawal:Somya's most recent leadership post as a Senior Civil Servant was as a Deputy Director for Product and Delivery at UK Health Security Agency. She became a DD after a very busy and demanding period as Product Introduction Lead during the COVID-19 pandemic where she was responsible for the design, development and launch of the COVID-19 lateral flow devices. Over 2.5bn LFDs were deployed during that time, so as you can imagine, it was a very high-profile and complex mission with a lot of ambiguity, unknowns and political sensitivities in play. However, Somya loved every second of it, because of the self-development it gave her but also the HUGE national impact that this job had.Prior to being a Senior Civil Servant, she worked at the Royal Marsden Hospital, a specialist Cancer Hospital in London, where she believes her passion for positive outcomes in healthcare really came from, as during her stint there in Research and Clinical trials, she saw many oncology drugs become licensed after seeing patients not only surviving but thriving when given the right care and treatment.Somya is one of 3 girls in her family (the middle one) who have been very fortunate to have been raised by parents who provided their daughters as much as they could within their means which did not come without sacrifices and we are all incredibly grateful for our childhoods and it making us who we are today. Though not yet married, she has a 6 year old niece who she absolutely dotes on and calls one of her best friends.Somya is incredibly passionate about positive outcomes in healthcare and states that her stakeholder engagement skills and energetic personality have now become her USP that have contributed to the successes she has had in her leadership journey so far.
Customer Experience Management takes on an entirely different context when you or a loved one gets a cancer diagnosis. As you'll hear from my guest on this episode, the healthcare system is broken in many ways. UNC is starting with a better way to listen. Loretta Muss, coordinator of the Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) at the North Carolina Basnight Cancer Hospital, recently retired after advocating for patients, families, hospital staff and administration for the past 14 years. Muss started in her role with the PFAC in 2009 with the hope of strengthening the relationship between patients, caregivers and their cancer care teams. On this episode of The Delighted Customers Podcast, Loretta talks about some of the realities stressing our healthcare system and the impact on patients. She shares the immensely successful PFAC she launched for UNC's Cancer Hospital and we talk about how the model can be used to help businesses inside and outside of healthcare. Here are three pivotal questions she answered, which we believe can reshape how we view healthcare: How can caregivers' inclusion in advisory councils transform patient care? Caregivers play a crucial role in the patient journey, often providing the most consistent care. Understanding their perspectives can lead to more holistic and effective healthcare solutions. What strategies can be employed to prevent burnout among healthcare providers while maintaining high standards of compassionate care? Burnout is a critical issue affecting healthcare providers worldwide. Addressing it is essential to ensure that providers can continue delivering the high-quality, compassionate care that patients need. In what ways can personalized patient interactions improve overall healthcare outcomes? Personalization in healthcare can bridge the gap between clinical efficiency and patient satisfaction. Exploring this can lead to better health outcomes and a more humane healthcare experience. Curious about Loretta's insightful answers? Tune in to our latest podcast episode and discover how these questions and their answers can drive significant improvements in the healthcare sector.

Today, we had a heartfelt conversation with Jo about her two unique birth stories. Facing a breast cancer diagnosis, Jo and her partner initially planned to freeze embryos, but were surprised when Jo became pregnant naturally. Jo delves into the important decision-making process of choosing the right care provider for her first pregnancy and birth, ultimately opting for a private midwife and a hospital birth. At 42+5 weeks, Jo underwent an induction. For her second baby, despite a gestational diabetes diagnosis, Jo chose to give birth at home.Links:Midwife thinking - Rachel Reed - Gestational Diabetes Midwives' Cauldron Podcast - Gestational Diabetes (pregnancy perspective)Midwives' Cauldron Podcast - Gestational Diabetes (babies perspective)Benefits and harms associated with an increase in gestational diabetes diagnosis in Queensland, Australia: a retrospective cohort comparison of diagnosis rates, outcomes, interventions and medication use for two periods, 2011–2013 and 2016–2018, using a large perinatal databaseSupport the Show.@homebirthstoriesaustralia Please be advised that this podcast may contain explicit language. Mike lives in Colorado Springs, CO as a Senior Benefits Consultant for Aflac and celebrated his 45th year with Aflac on November 1, 2021. He is recognized as one of the leading healthcare gurus in the nation and is a much sought after keynote speaker, with topics ranging from Aflac's solutions to Heath Care Reform and Employee Benefits to personal stories about succeeding in business, in sports, and in life. He firmly believes that not including Aflac in your employee choices of health care is a huge mistake in today's very confusing health care marketplace and will gladly explain WHY.Mike is an honest man who puts his money where his mouth is, personally donating funds to the Aflac Children's Cancer Hospital throughout his tenure with the organization. Since 1995, Aflac has raised and donated more than $110 million to fund cancer research. Much of Aflac's support comes from its independent sales agents, such as Mike, who contribute donations from their monthly commission checks, as well as Aflac employees who contribute each month through payroll deductions. And it is making a difference. Leukemia is the biggest killer of children. Fifteen years ago the survival rate was a mere 36%, today the survival rate is 80%. But no one will be satisfied until there is a 100% survival rate for these young kids.Mike's inspiration comes from the Jerry Lewis telethons, which raised billions of dollars to fund research for a cure to Muscular Dystrophy. He used his celebrity to help others, even though he didn't have to. Mike may not be a celebrity, except in his own mind, but he has been through cancer, survived it, and wants to give back to find a cure. He is providing multiple ways for you to join him on his journey of raising funds for cancer research… buy his inspirational books and Aflac branded products, join him at entertaining live events, and hire him to speak to your organization.Mike's Motivational BooksMike's first book, “Incredible Business” was a labor of love and a great co-author collaboration on how building relationships and gaining referrals beats cold-calling all day long. His second book, “I Chose…Live” recounts his battle with Cancer and how he is winning the war. He raises awareness for Cancer prevention and early detection; discusses modern advances in Cancer research and treatment; and reminds the reader to keep smiling no matter how much “life's challenges” come their way.In his newest book, “A Random Act of Kindness”, Mike speaks to how simple gestures might help change a life plus it just might save a life.

China's top drug regulator has expanded the use of an imported vaccine against nine strains of the cancer-causing human papillomavirus to girls as young as nine and adults up to age 45. While hailing the decision as part of China's endeavor to accelerate elimination of cervical cancer, experts said that given the tight supply of the 9-valent vaccine and increasing evidence of the efficacy of homegrown vaccines, it is wise to receive any approved HPV vaccines available. The National Medical Products Administration first granted authorization to Gardasil 9, a 9-valent HPV vaccine created by global pharmaceutical giant Merck, for use in females aged 16 to 26 in 2018. On Tuesday, the administration said that its use is now broadened to females aged 9 through 45.2018年,药企默沙东研发的九价HPV疫苗“佳达修9”首次获批用于16岁至26岁的女性。 Currently, three imported HPV vaccines and two domestic vaccines have been approved for use on the mainland. Gardasil 9 is the only one that can shield nine strains of HPV, while the others offer protection against either two or four strains. Qiao Youlin, a professor at the School of Population Medicine and Public Health at the Peking Union Medical College, said that HPV vaccines work best among teenage girls and those who have not had a sexual encounter, but sexually active women can still benefit from getting vaccinated. Expanding the age group eligible for the 9-valent vaccine will offer more options for Chinese females of different ages to prevent HPV infection and protect their health, and advance China's action to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer," he said in a news release published by Merck on Tuesday.8月30日,乔友林教授在默沙东公众号发布的文章中表示:“九价HPV疫苗获批扩龄更是令我们倍感振奋,其将为我国不同年龄层的女性预防HPV感染和降低相关疾病风险带来更多守护健康的选择,并进一步推动我国加快消除宫颈癌的步伐。”In China, nearly 110,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer last year, and 59,000 had died of the disease, said Zhao Fanghui, a professor at the National Cancer Center and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences' Cancer Hospital, citing data from the Global Cancer Observatory, a cancer data platform associated with the World Health Organization. Official data also show that the incidence of cervical cancer in China is rising and the average age of patients is getting younger, which is highly concerning," she said. Eliminating the disease would require consolidated efforts in boosting the vaccination rate, especially among those aged under 15, as well as promoting early screening and treatment. Due to limited supplies and low awareness, China is now lagging far behind some leading countries in terms of immunization coverage, according to Zhao. However, the rising number of highly effective domestic vaccines available on the market is expected to ramp up the efforts. Six homegrown 9-valent HPV vaccines have entered the third stage of clinical trials, according to information shared by Dong Shaozhong, a researcher at Walvax Biotechnology, during a forum held during the weekend. Doses that protect against even more strains are also under research. Even though the highly-coveted 9-valent vaccine is not easily available at present, Zhao said unvaccinated groups should not hesitate to receive a dose that protects against two strains. A new study published in the journal The Lancet Infectious Disease on Friday shows that Cecolin, the first domestic vaccine that protects against two HPV strains, is 100 percent effective in protecting against genital lesions-a precancerous condition-and 97.3 percent effective against persistent infection.8月26日,《柳叶刀-感染病学》发表的一项新研究表明,国产HPV疫苗馨可宁可有效预防HPV16型和18型病毒类型,对HPV16型和/或18型感染相关的病变终点的保护率为100.0%,对HPV16型和/或18型持续性感染(6月以上)的保护率为97.3%。Zhao, who is involved in the study, said the data shows that the domestic vaccine's efficacy is on par with its international alternatives. Moreover, the two types of HPV that the vaccine is capable of protecting against cause about 84.5 percent of cervical squamous cancer cases-the most common form of cervical cancer-in China, higher than the global average of 70 percent. The follow-up study that tracks more than 7,300 women for about 5.5 years adds evidence to the long-term protection provided by the domestic vaccine," she said. "It can also inform the formulation of public health policies and boost public confidence in and acceptance of domestic vaccines," she said. While the latest authorization for Gardasil 9 means that more well-off groups can access the vaccine, Zhao suggested the general public not hesitate to receive available vaccines as soon as possible. Here's one of the most common cancer myths: When a surgeon performs a biopsy or surgery on a cancerous tumor, the exposure to the air causes the cancer cells to spread much faster throughout the body. “I hear this myth all the time, it's the most common cancer myth I hear,” said Joel Mayerson, director of the James sarcoma program. In Episode 86 of the James Cancer-Free World podcast, we'll explore and set the record straight on more cancer myths with the help of several James experts. Some of the myths we debunk include: Patients who undergo radiation treatment actually become radioactive; an occasional cigarette won't increase the risk of cancer; pipes and cigars and clove cigarettes aren't nearly as bad for people as cigarettes; only older people get skin cancer; people with darker skin do not get skin cancer; and smoking and drinking is the primary cause of head and neck cancer.

In this episode of The James 30th Anniversary Celebration podcast, William B. Farrar, MD, the current CEO of The James, fills us in on the vision and determination of Arthur G. James, MD. “What we've been able to accomplish would really make him proud — to know that what he first envisioned decades ago has actually occurred, and has occurred to a larger level than he could have ever imagined." This episode also features Raphael E. Pollock, MD, PhD, the current director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“This is an amazing, beautiful hospital that gives such phenomenal care to our patients. When you meet the staff and leaders of The James, you know you're in the right place as a patient.” Those are the words of Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, former CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (2008-17), and former director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (2003-17). In Episode 63 of The James 30th Anniversary Celebration podcast (the second in a three-part series on the 30th anniversary of the original James), Caligiuri discusses how he built upon the solid foundation created by David E. Schuller Clara D. Bloomfield, MD, his mentor. Caligiuri recruited scores of top physicians, scientists and physician/scientists as the OSUCCC – James grew, expanded, gained a worldwide reputation for excellence, and achieved a rare perfect score from the National Cancer Institute in 2015.
When the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute opened on July 9, 1990, a new era had begun. “Dr. James had the honor of wheeling the first patient [from University Hospitals] into the new James,” says David E. Schuller, MD, the first CEO of the hospital. Schuller is among the giants in the history of the James and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he was director from 1988-97. He shares some of the many highlights of his career in Part I of this three-part James 30th Anniversary Celebration podcast. Dr. James had dreamed of establishing a dedicated cancer hospital in central Ohio for more than 40 years. "He saw the benefits of having a hospital totally focused on this disease and wasn't going to back off of that until he achieved his goal," Schuller says.
Joel “Thor” Neeb, a former Fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, best-selling author, CEO of the consulting firm, Afterburner, American Ninja Warrior contestant, and Stage IV cancer survivor shares how he was transformed by Kristina, a young girl who was a fellow patient, in a Houston hospital while battling through the lowest points of his life. It was during this time that he was recording videos for his kids for future graduations, birthdays, and more (when he figured that wouldn't be around anymore). In this episode, Joel discusses how he learned to remove the sentiment of feeling sorry for himself. He also learned how to moderate his reactions when interacting with Kristina, someone who he later learned was fighting through a significant battle of her own. This podcast highlights original research published in the February 2020 issue of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the official journal of the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) Foundation. Hospital-acquired aspiration pneumonia remains a rare but potentially devastating problem. The best means by which to prevent aspiration in a cancer hospital population has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of dysphagia screening on aspiration pneumonia rates in an acute care oncology hospital. In conclusion, nursing-initiated dysphagia screening did not decrease aspiration pneumonia rates. The causes of aspiration-associated pneumonia were heterogeneous. Aspiration of intestinal contents is a more common source of hospital-acquired pneumonia than oropharyngeal dysphagia. Click here to read the full article.

Dr Aasim Yusuf talks to ecancer at the 2012 National Cancer Institute Directors Meeting in Lyon about the current state of cancer care in Pakistan. The large differences in cancer care in Pakistan compared to the United Kingdom and the United states revolve around the focus on primary care rather than diagnostics. At the moment the large majority of hospitals do not have the facilities or the trained staff to handle the increasing number of cancer cases each year. As Pakistan’s life expectancy has risen in the past decades from 35 to 65, more and more cases present with only around 150-trained oncologist for the whole of the country. Dr Yusuf advises that to tackle the situation there must be a push in training in vital areas like diagnostics.
