I am talking to the wonderful Kim Nicol in this episode. Kim is a life coach, mindfulness teacher, and host of The New Manager Podcast. We focus on providing practical tips for self-advocacy and speaking up for oneself. Speaking up for yourself or self-advocacy is a muscle we must develop in order to negotiate for our worth. So, our call to action is this - use every opportunity to practice this muscle. Need a home office allowance? Ask. Participate in volunteer work? Ask. Want to be part of a high visibility project? Ask. Equally important in advocating for yourself is the courage and ability to say "no." While many of us are aware of this, very few of us have the practice of saying 'no.' We often get inundated with to-do lists that end up blockading our progress. Until we master these skills, we will continue to under-earn. Tune into this episode for some actionable tips that can make a real difference. Enjoy! Links: If you want to ask for a pay raise, use this script. (It's Free!). This is Jess Hatzis-Walker for Female Startup Club Hello and welcome back to the show! It's Doone here - your host and hype girl sliding into your ears with a new episode on the Female Startup Club podcast. If you're new here, hi! Welcome! Every week we interview some of the world's most exciting and successful founders and entrepreneurs - who happen to be women. Like Jess Hatzis-Walker. One of the co-founders behind the iconic skincare brand, Frank Bod. Frank Bod started a decade ago back in 2013 and through their strong original branding and an innovative approach to marketing grew it from $0-$100m+ business. In this episode, we chat through what shifted the needle in scaling this brand, how early-stage founders should think about brand and Marketing in today's world, and what Jess would do if she was starting it all again tomorrow. I love the part of this episode where we dive into just how easy it is to get stuck in old habits, even when that's the total opposite of what you should be focusing on. It's easy over time to get set in your ways and rinse and repeat things. But as founders, we have got to remember: the only thing scarier than a new idea is an old one. It's this idea that guides a lot of Frank Body's decision-making. When it comes down to it, a lot of money makes people lazy and stupid. Your best campaigns will be done on a shoestring budget. Have fun with it! And if you haven't downloaded our Grants doc yet - there are so many good ones ready to apply to this month! In this episode of THE IDEALISTS. podcast, host and entrepreneur Melissa Kiguwa interviews Anisha Singh, entrepreneur, former CEO of Mydala.com, and Founding Partner of She Capital, India's leading early-stage venture fund devoted to nurturing and growing the next generation of female-focused businesses. Anisha's own journey as an entrepreneur has been full of breaking stereotypes, glass ceilings, and shifting traditional perceptions. Now as she dons a new role of investor, she is on a mission to cultivate female unicorns and role models that resonate with younger women aspirants. A role model herself, Anisha was ranked amongst the Top 7 Global Women CEOs by Crunchbase in 2018. Prior to Mydala.com, she founded and ran a digital content company called Kinis Software Solutions. Anisha began her career working with the Clinton Administration on an initiative that's still close to her heart—Springboard helped women entrepreneurs raise funds to start new businesses and lives. Inspired by these women, Anisha knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur back in India. Now recognized as one of The Top 100 Global Diversity Leaders in 2019 and ranked among the 50 Most Influential 2018 in Asia, Anisha is also the President of the jury of the Cartier Women's Initiative for South Asia. In this remarkable episode, Anisha shares what it means to bristle at being labeled a “female” founder, and how that notion shifted with the birth of her daughters when she realized there simply weren't enough women's voices in the mix, and that real representation needed to start with her—even if it was only one voice. She reflects on what it means to take a big leap, how to persist to get to the breakthrough, and how the startup journey is never quite what you think it's going to be. She also discusses her journey from founder to investor and potentially back again. More than anything, Anisha's audacious wish to create an international community of role models that women everywhere can access will leave you asking who your role models are and how can you be a better one? . . . . . - Anisha starts off the episode by talking about how she has always believed in taking the leap—that jumping in the proverbial deep end and having to figure it all out has always served her best because, in the end, there's never any sure path. She also reflects on how women are so often trained to overthinking things, which can leave you on the sidelines and missing the key moments of your life. - She shares her journey of growing up in Delhi, being raised by a conservative father who was a struggling entrepreneur, then going to graduate school in the US, and on to work in the Clinton Administration to help women entrepreneurs raise funds to ultimately return to India to become an entrepreneur—as founder and CEO of Mydala.com. - Anisha then recounts how her discomfort (or annoyance) being thought of as a “female” founder shifted with the advent of her daughters. She also recounts the hardships of raising funding only to lose it in the 11th hour, and also relates her humbling self-reinvention in bringing She Capital to life. - At the end of the episode, Anisha shares her audacious wish for creating a world of brilliant founders and generations of role models who finally make real equality possible for women. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theidealists/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theidealists/support
When Shelly Porges learned in 2017 that women were only receiving 2.7 percent of global venture capital, she started thinking about what she could do to change that. By 2018, she had co-founded the Billion Dollar Fund for Women (now Beyond the Billion), and within a year more than $1 billion was committed from over 80 funds globally. In this episode of Women on the Move, Shelly sits down with host Sam Saperstein to discuss her multisector background, why she's so passionate about connecting funders with women, and how Beyond the Billion achieved success beyond her expectations. Multisector experience Shelly tells Sam that her varied experience across the corporate, government, and entrepreneurial sectors has been invaluable. “Each sector has its own rewards and its own challenges, things that you learned that you wouldn't have learned maybe doing the last thing you did,” she says. Starting out in the corporate sector, Shelly worked 10 years at American Express before spending three years at Bank of America as Chief Marketing Officer during an historic turnaround. She went on to found not one but six companies in the Bay Area. By 2005, she had moved to Washington, DC and become involved with Hillary Clinton's campaigns. “I wasn't doing it for money,” she tells Sam. I was doing it because I really believed in her as a candidate and her as a leader. And then I had the opportunity to join her at the state department as her senior advisor for global entrepreneurship.” Shelly is now working in her fifth sector, venture capital, having launched the Billion Dollar Fund for Women in 2018. Raising a billion for women Shelly says the inspiration for the Billion Dollar Fund for Women was the many female founders she worked with over the years at the Cartier Women's Initiative, the largest women's business plan competition in the world. “I would see women from all over the world, innovating amazing technology or tech-enabled businesses that were helping people in the healthcare sector or any number of things, saving lives, educating more and more young people,” she says. “And then afterwards I would try to help get them funded. And so I knew those companies intimately and not being able to find them funding would drive me nuts.” Back in the private sector after the 2016 election, Shelly knew she wanted to focus on helping women entrepreneurs raise money. She found her path forward when a friend, a prominent Asian businesswoman, told her the World Bank was holding its annual meetings in Bali in 2018. The friend was working to mobilize a blended finance forum around the 17 UN sustainable development goals—but she couldn't find a project partner for Goal #5: Gender Equality. “I said, well, send me your parameters and I'll see what I can do,” Shelly recalls. “I know a lot of people. And meanwhile I started getting obsessed with this notion. What if I offered to promote these venture funds to limited partner investors who would invest in them in exchange for which they would make a pledge to invest more into female founders? And that's where it all started.” “So now she had a project partner for number five and we were up and running,” she tells Sam. “By the time we got to the World Bank meetings, we had over $460 million pledged from initially at 23 funds. So [it was] the beginning of what we call our global consortium of funds; in under nine months we achieved and then surpassed the billion dollars.” Getting results Since then, Beyond the Billion has continued to exceed expectations. Shelly says that's partly a reflection of the untapped value of women entrepreneurs; data shows that women are consistently getting better results than men.“Whereas when we invest in men, it's a normal carbon. It's the very definition of the normal curve because they represent the total universe practically of who gets invested in.” As far as advice to female entrepreneurs, Shelly is straightforward: “Do your homework, know who you're reaching out to,” she says. By doing your research upfront you can find the subset of funds that might be a good match for you in terms of stage, geography, mission, and other criteria, she notes. Full transcript here

There's been a shift in how we talk about the private lives of others, and we're all for it -- with the backlash against the newspaper that "outed" Rebel Wilson fierce and game-changing. Meanwhile, what's with the rise in threats of violence against female politicians? From NZ PM Jacinda Ardern to Australian Independent MP Dr Monique Ryan, there's been a sharp uptick in misogynistic threats. Julia Gillard has raised concerns about the gender imbalance of who is and will return to the office. Meanwhile, Elon Musk wants people who keep working from home to "pretend to work elsewhere". And overall this week feels very new and rather optimistic. We have a new Cabinet, and record numbers of women across key leadership positions. This week's podcast episode features an interview with Vanessa Ford. You may not realize the signs. One day, you feel whole, purposeful, and full of energy. The next day, you feel out of sorts. Though nothing has changed in your outside world, something inside feels off-balance. You work out religiously, but the slice of pizza you only looked at but didn't eat seemed to have found its way onto your scale. Your skin is drier and the grey hairs appeared overnight. You love life, yet your energy levels wax and wane. Should you give away those fabulous clothes in your closet that no longer fit? Or do you hold onto them thinking that more exercise and a stricter diet will help you wear them again with confidence? You love your partner, yet sometimes, you think of the unspeakable. You're hot and sweating at 3:00 pm, then cold and reaching for a cashmere pashmina the next. Whatever this is… it's temporary. Maybe it's even normal. Maybe it doesn't even have to be this way. Vanessa is the co-founder of MenoLabs, a company focused on women's issues during perimenopause/menopause. She and her friend of 20 years, Danielle Jacobs, created MenoLabs to address what they see as a glaring need in every woman's life. Vanessa was prompted to action when, at 44, she began her own transition into menopause. Unsatisfied with the lack of support that women experience during this stage of life, and finding the stereotypes of women in mid-life exasperating and insulting, she met the challenges of this stage of a woman's life with creativity. Named a top ten finalist in the Cartier Women's Initiative, Vanessa believes that for-profits can change the world and make a difference in people's lives with the same passion for mission used by nonprofits — and in fact, should do so if they want to be truly successful. She is, herself, successful, on a mission to make life better for others and doing it all with authenticity and flair. Small Business Finance What You Will Learn: Why many entrepreneurs struggle with small business finance complexities, and how Lorne's firm helps owners build a solid financial foundation How Simple Startup helps new entrepreneurs build up their financial education, and how the firm gives a fresh perspective even to more experienced entrepreneurs Why putting a solid foundation in place for your business is the key to ensuring smooth, consistent future growth What key considerations Lorne recommends you keep in mind before seeking outside funding for your business Under what circumstances it might be worth looking for outside capital, and why fear often holds entrepreneurs back from taking opportunities presented to them Why it takes a tremendous amount of self-awareness to drive a business forward and take the right risks and opportunities Lorne shares advice and best practices for getting debt for your business, and why you might consider exchanging equity for financing rather than taking on debt Why it is crucial that any party you partner with in exchange for equity be aligned to your Vision and be positioned to help you grow Why your financial decisions should be based on how they help you reach your long-term goals and what impact they will have on your business today Why there are two kinds of investors, ones focused primarily on profit and others focused on growth potential About Lorne Noble: A serial entrepreneur, Lorne Noble combined his favorite aspects of the corporate world and prior businesses (the analytics and helping young companies) when he founded Simple Startup, his fourth company, in a location fit for a former professional ski racer, Boulder. Simple Startup was born from observation, experience and necessity. Having worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs, he often saw the same pattern repeated where incredible startups with mind-blowing vision and drive lacked a handle on their finances and suffered because of it. Entrepreneurs were making decisions based on gut feel rather than hard data leaving them open to risk when raising money and implementing strategy. They were unable to translate their vision into a sustainable, profitable business model. As principal and co-founder of Simple Startup, Noble dives into the analytics of the companies he advises while helping them simplify their finances, understand their numbers and make smart, informed decisions at every stage of business. He leads a talented group of financial analysts who are experts in investment-ready accounting, fractional finance support, business taxes and more, helping companies from idea to IPO and beyond. Noble began his career as an investment analyst where he led the due diligence process for over $2.5 billion in investment transactions. During the 2009 financial collapse, Noble became disenchanted with his corporate career and began the pursuit of his MBA from IE Business School in Madrid, Spain where he became hooked on entrepreneurship. His passion for entrepreneurship led him to launch three different technology platforms: Career Mentor Me, Help More and My Healthier Body. His certificate in Advanced Financial Modelling from the London School of Business and Finance enabled him to further entrench himself into one of his favorite pastimes tinkering with Excel spreadsheets. After moving to Boulder, Colorado for a new adventure, Noble acted as the finance mentor to high-impact companies at the Unreasonable Institute, Girl Effect Accelerator and Singularity University. He also served as the founding member of the inaugural Financial Architect Program at the Unreasonable Institute. In pursuit of the latter, Noble has worked with numerous accelerators and organizations including Techstars, Cartier Women's Initiative, Unreasonable Group, Next Wave Fund, Uncharted, Singularity University, the Nike Sponsored Girl Effect Accelerator, YPO+ Accelerator and Galvanize. He is always looking for new partnerships to help entrepreneurs change the world. Noble lives with his family in Boulder and has been fortunate to live in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Spain, France and the Dominican Republic. Noble absolutely loves finance, even going so far as to play with Excel on vacation, but he adores his girls Amber and Lyla even more. They enjoy going on adventures as a family including skiing, kite surfing, mountain biking and traveling. PKN Managing Editor & Publisher Lindy Hughson is joined by Joanne Howarth, the Founder & CEO of Planet Protector Packaging.Joanne is an entrepreneur with big passion determined to make a big impact.Joanne explains how she was driven to find a planet-friendly form of packaging through her extensive use of polystyrene packaging for cold chain distribution in her previous role. This led her to research the use of sheep's wool as a natural thermal insulator, allowing her to convert otherwise discarded belly wool into Woolpack, a lining material for boxes that can be recycled or composted.Woolpack delivers superior performance to polystyrene for thermal packaging and is currently being used by clients shipping dairy products, meat, seafood and pharmaceuticals. It was recently featured as a case study with the World Wildlife Fund Australia's "Plastic: Revolution to Reality" report while the Lobster Protector variant won the gold medal award in the Food Design of the Year category at the 2020 Australasian Packaging and Innovation Design (PIDA) Awards,Joanne was recently named one of the seven winning laureates of the 2020 Cartier Women's Initiative, the French jeweller's international business program aimed at uncovering, recognising and supporting women entrepreneurs worldwide. This has provided her with new business connections and led to working with the UN's Industrial Development Organisation to support their sustainability development goals.Planet Protector is currently working with the Tasmanian government to replace polystyrene as part of the state's sustainable packaging initiative and is in the process of establishing a production site in Tasmania to reduce the cost of transporting packaging from the mainland. They are also seeking capital to move into the South East Asian market with a particular interest in Mongolia due to the volume of wool the country produces. We wrap up by discussing the importance of government support to help incentivise organisations to use sustainable packaging. Momentum is slowly gathering with Australian companies, but we are lagging behind New Zealand where the supermarkets have mandated the removal of polystyrene packaging for all products supplied to them.------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest's employer.
