Electric Hyundai Veloster N ETCR To Race In Pure ETCR Championship Shell Targets 500,000 Charge Points By 2025   Show #994   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 15th February. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   JAGUAR BRAND WILL BECOME 100% ELECTRIC BY 2025 What do you do with a range of cars with a weight and luxury position which suits combustion engines? They have to go electric. "Jaguar is to recreate itself as the Tesla of the West Midlands and go fully electric within four years. The move will involve the scrapping of the current Jaguar range, bar its much-fêted single-battery model the I-Pace, and the closure of the Castle Bromwich factory east of Birmingham as a car manufacturing plant." reports Robert Lea from Financial Times today: "Jaguar Land Rover’s Indian owners, Tata Motors, intend Jaguar to be an all-electric brand by 2025 and car production will move to Solihull alongside Range Rover."   Jaguar XJ Electric has been killed off. Part of a £1bn plan into the Castle Bromwich facility. Facing a write off of between £300-£500m.  200o people work at that site and when the cars made there reach the end of their life, the site becomes non-production.   There will be a battery option on every model by 2030 from the group.   The first electric Land Rover will be released in 2024.   The Jag brand is going all electric and further upmarket.   Schmidt Automotive Research said: "The move by the Tata owned premium brand manufacturer is likely driven among other reasons by European Union legislation, with the phase-out of the so called derogation rule applied to passenger car manufacturers that qualify for “niche” car manufacturer status, and therefore register between 10,000 and 300,000 vehicles per year across the 27 market region. The EU CO2 targets are also replicated by British legislation, in place since the UK departed the European Union in 2021 following a one year transition period.  The derogation phase-out will take place between 2026-2028. The new series will include electric and conventional drives and cover both the light commercial vehicle and passenger van segment. All vans will be made in France." asys electrive "What this means for the future of the Nissan eNV-200 remains unclear. Currently, Nissan is making the e-van in Barcelona, but already said they would close the Spanish plant at the end of this year. Still, the statement now published consider the new all-electric Nissan van to “build on the success of the e-NV200, which was the first all-electric commercial vehicle for the mass market when it was launched in 2014”. So far, Nissan sees production “alongside the next-generation Renault Kangoo” in France."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/13/nissan-announces-plans-for-next-gen-small-van-in-europe/   VW'S HERBERT DIESS: "I'M NOT SCARED OF APPLE" "Volkswagen's CEO Herbert Diess isn't intimidated by Apple, even though the tech company potentially has an electric car on the way." says CNN:"Volkswagen is also aiming to be a dominant force in the electric car field. The car company sold 231,600 battery electric vehicles in 2020, according to figures published by the company in January. Although that's less than half the number of sales Tesla made last year, it represents an increase of 214% on the previous year and shows Germany's huge auto industry is beginning to mount a challenge to the leader in electric cars."   HD: "The car industry is not a typical tech sector that you could take over at a single stroke, Apple will not manage that overnight."   https://edition.cnn.com/2021/02/14/tech/volkswagen-ceo-apple/index.html   TESLA MODEL Y GETS REFRESHED CENTRE CONSOLE "The most recent Model Y refresh creeping into Tesla stores comes with a non-glossy matte black center console, according to reports this week from new owners" says Forbes.com: "And it gets even more confusing between the Model 3 and Model Y. The Model 3 and Model Y are similar cars in many respects. So, sometimes the Model 3 gets features first introduced on the Model Y and sometimes vice versa. For example, the refreshed Tesla Model 3 got things from the Model Y such as “chrome delete” (black replaces the chrome door handles and window trim), a heat pump, and power trunk. And the Model Y has gotten things first introduced on the Model 3 such as auto-dimming side mirrors and double-pane window glass."   TESLA INTRODUCES BUYOUT LEASE PROGRAM "For some time, Tesla has not allowed owners to purchase their cars at the end of a leasing period. The car is to be returned to the automaker with no chance of a leaseholder buying out the car at the conclusion of the period. The car would be added to the company’s used inventory, to third-party resalers, or reserved for the future use of the Robotaxi fleet." says Teslarati: "Tesla is offering the option to buy a vehicle at the end of a lease in some markets. The customer has the option to return the vehicle as well in some cases, and Tesla is “reasonably certain” that the leaseholder will take possession of the vehicle title when the lease ends."   Belgium Croatia Denmark France Italy the Netherlands Poland Taiwan   TESLA GRANTING ACCESS TO THIRD PARTY REPAIRERS – WITH A CATCH! "Independent car dealerships now also have unrestricted access to the Tesla brand's repair and maintenance information. At the turn of the year, the vehicle manufacturer adapted its platform for repair and maintenance information accordingly." says Automobilwoche: "In mid-2020, the industry association ZDK and other market participants lodged a complaint with the EU Commission against Tesla's discrimination against independent service companies. According to the current legislation, all motor vehicle operations must be granted non-discriminatory access to repair and maintenance information as well as to diagnostic and programming software. However, Tesla currently charges 125 euros per hour for using the diagnostic and programming software and 30 euros per hour for maintenance information via the technical portal."   https://www.automobilwoche.de/article/20210210/NACHRICHTEN/210219992/reparatur--und-wartungsinformationen-fur-werkstatten-tesla-muss-zugang-fur-alle-ermoglichen   ELECTRIC HYUNDAI VELOSTER N ETCR TO RACE IN PURE ETCR CHAMPIONSHIP "Hyundai announced that its racing arm Hyundai Motorsport will participate in the inaugural Pure ETCR electric touring car championship, starting this year in Europe. The South Korean company intends to utilize motorsport as a testing ground for new technologies. Hyundai will compete in the Pure ETCR with its all-electric Veloster N ETCR high-performance touring car, based on a highly-modified version of on road-going Hyundai Veloster N model." repotrs Insdide EVs: "It has a four-motor, rear-wheel-drive powertrain rated at 500 kW peak, powered by an 800 V battery pack, supplied by Williams Advanced Engineering."   "A five-round schedule, featuring the most powerful and fastest-accelerating touring cars ever made, will get underway in Europe in June and end in Asia in October, with the world’s best touring car drivers going head-to-head in PURE ETCR’s knockout ‘Battle’ format."   https://insideevs.com/news/487838/hyundai-veloster-n-etcr-race-pure-etcr/   SHELL TARGETS 500,000 CHARGE POINTS BY 2025 In a media release Shell targets: "growth of global electric vehicle (EV) network from more than 60,000 charge points today to around 500,000 by 2025."   They have bought NewMOtion and Ubitricity. Show #804   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 9th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and hel p you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER via Patreon RICHARD LUPINSKY   'ONE MILLION MILE' ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY IS NOW 'READY TO PRODUCE' "The leadership of a Tesla technology partner in China that is helping to develop a "one million mile" battery says the company is now "ready to produce." Zeng Yuqun, chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), has said the Ningde-based manufacturing firm has the capability of making a battery pack that can last for about 16 years, powering an electric vehicle for 1.24 million miles." writes Newsweek: "According to the SCMP, CATL signed a two-year contract to supply batteries to Tesla in February this year, and its technology is set to be incorporated into the Model 3 range of vehicles being made at Musk's new gigafactory located in Shanghai."   On Elon: "We're getting along well and he's a fun guy. He's talking about cost all day long, and I'm making sure we have the solutions."   https://www.newsweek.com/tesla-elon-musk-one-million-mile-battery-ready-produce-chinese-partner-catl-says-1509293   FORD REVEALS ESCAPE PHEV PRICE, RANGE AND MORE FOR U.S. "Ford announced its first new plug-in hybrid model in the U.S. market, the Ford Escape PHEV, which earlier was launched in Europe as Ford Kuga PHEV. The Escape PHEV might be one of the top-selling plug-in hybrids and a major competitor to the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It will start at less than $35,000 (MSRP), before destination charge and an eligible federal tax credit of probably over $6,700." says InsideEVs: " The EPA-estimated all-electric range will be about 37 miles (59.5 km) so really not bad, although the RAV4 Prime is able to go up to 42 miles (67.6 km). The battery pack (14.4 kWh) is installed under the second-row seats."   Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer said: “The original Ford Escape was the world’s first hybrid SUV and the all-new Ford Escape plug-in hybrid represents how far we’ve come in technology and efficiency. The all-new Escape plug-in has more power and more passenger space than the Fusion Energi plug-in, as well as four times the cargo volume behind its second-row seats. Escape also has an additional 11 miles of all-electric driving range before it uses a drop of gas.”   https://insideevs.com/news/427357/ford-escape-phev-price-range-us/   VOLKSWAGEN REPLACES DIESS WITH RALF BRANDSTÄTTER FOR THE VW BRAND "Ralf Brandstätter is the Volkswagen brand's new CEO as a promotion over his previous role as the marque's chief operating officer. He takes over the role from Herbert Diess who is currently the CEO of both the VW brand and VW Group as a whole. " reports Motor1.com: "The company's board positions this change as letting Diess put a greater emphasis on running the business, rather than splitting his focus between two roles.  The shakeup comes amid VW having some problems in Europe. The company had to halt deliveries of the new Golf because of an issue with the software for the emergency call function – a mandated feature in Europe. The problem affected around 15,000 cars that the automaker had already delivered to customers.  There are also rumors about problems with the software suite in the company's forthcoming ID.3 electric car. The exact nature of the issue isn't clear, but elements within the system are allegedly not able to communicate correctly. There are reportedly over 10,000 technicians working to solve the problem."   Spiegel.de reports (Google Translate from German): "There is also a problem with the electric ID.3, with which VW wants to build a Golf successor in the mass market and establish an E series with billions of dollars in investment. The model from the Zwickau plant, which is to be ordered from mid-June, will initially only come with a slimmed-down range of functions. Reason: software delays."   https://www.motor1.com/news/427604/volkswagen-new-boss/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news   https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/vw-konzernchef-diess-gibt-fuehrung-der-kernmarke-ab-a-5a78ea2b-a531-4f94-b995-dae144216e5a   CHINA'S BYD IN TALKS TO SUPPLY JLR FROM UK BATERY PLANT "Chinese EV and battery specialist BYD is in talks with Jaguar Land Rover to supply automotive batteries from a UK plant, a source with knowledge of the situation said." writes Automotive News Europe: "JLR CEO Ralf Speth has previously said the UK needs its own battery cell production, but operated independently of JLR. The UK would be BYD’s first European battery cell factory but the company is also looking at other European locations, the source said. JLR currently sells the Jaguar I-Pace electric crossover, which is built by Magna Steyr in Austria. It plans to produce a full-electric version of the Jaguar XJ sedan at its Castle Bromwich factory in England."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/chinas-byd-talks-supply-jlr-uk-battery-plant   WIRELESS CHARGING UPDATE "Wireless parking places, if they work well with a variety of vehicles, are primed to be part of the gold rush. WiTricity's charging coils, which China chose for its national wireless standard in May, can reach parked electric sports cars and SUVs alike with clearance ranging from 4 in.–10 in." says CNBC: "Charging vehicles in motion is on the table with existing technology too, since the distance between a car's carriage and the road stays fairly constant. Fellow wireless charging company Qualcomm Halo, which WiTricity acquired last year, has built a 300-ft test track in France that can charge cars driving at highway speeds. And Israeli start-up Electreon is electrifying short stretches of road in Israel and Sweden. If automakers can settle on one standard technology, omnipresent, automatic charging stations would let electric vehicles go farther on smaller batteries, reminiscent of Tesla's imagined fuel-free planes. Hands-free charging also will grow more essential if cars get more autonomous, since they won't be able to plug themselves in."   https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/researchers-work-on-the-next-generation-of-wireless-charging-for-evs.html   ALL-NEW FIAT 500 ELECTRIC NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER The New Fiat 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback makes its debut today following the successful unveiling of the New 500 ‘la Prima’ convertible in March. Total system power stands at 215bhp and 450Nm, while the electric power is stored in a 15.6kWh battery. It is only available with AMG Line Executive equipment grade or higher, so prices start from £35,280.   CHINA’S EV MARKET IS RECOVERING "In China, exactly 55,829 battery electric cars and 14,370 plug-in hybrids from local production were sold in May. The sales figures for so-called New Energy Vehicles were thus 25.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year, but 19.5 per cent higher than in April 2020." reports Chris Randall for electrive: "The best-selling electrified model in May was the Tesla Model 3: CPCA statistics show 11,095 units of the locally manufactured American electric sedan sold in China. That is a good three times as many as in April (3,635). However, sales of the Model 3 in April were also down sharply on March (10,160). Tesla itself probably contributed to the new high with a price reduction for the Model 3 Standard Range announced at the end of April. "   That price drop kept it in the window for Chinese subsidies. And what about the Long Range RWD Model 3 they started delivering at the end of May?   David Leggett, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData: "This is the second consecutive monthly rise for the Chinese vehicle market, as it rebounds from sharp declines in the first quarter caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus. China was first into the COVID-19 crisis and first out of it, so developments in China’s economy are being watched very closely."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/09/chinas-ev-market-is-recovering-sowly/   WOULD YOU SWAP TO AN ELECTRIC CAR IF THEY WERE £6,000 CHEAPER? Government could announce a scrappage scheme for only electric vehicles Motorists who scrap an old petrol or diesel car would get £6,000 off a new EV Plans could be announced next month, according to report from The Telegraph It mirrors plans in Germany that are part of a €130bn Covid-19 stimulus package EV buyers there will receive an industry and government-backed subsidy of €9k   "It could mean that the price of the British-build Nissan Leaf electric vehicle falls from £26,845 to just £20,845 and would see a new VW ID.3 zero-emission hatchback cost around the same as an entry-level petrol-powered Golf. The Prime Minister would also see the move as a positive break for UK manufacturing, with the popular Nissan Leaf build at the Japanese firm's factory in Sunderland and Mini's Plant Oxford producing the all-new Mini Electric." writes This Is Money: "The price of a Nissan Leaf would drop to around £20,000, which will be on par with the Nissan Qashqai, starting from £20,565 in the UK. The all-new £24,400 Mini Electric would fall to just £18,400 - a like-for-like fee as a petrol Mini Cooper. Tesla's most affordable Model 3 would decrease from around £40,000 to £34,000, around the same a a mid-spec BMW 3 Series saloon."   Read more here: https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-8398385/Boris-Johnson-considering-slashing-prices-new-EVs-6-000.html   Add £3000 for the PiCG and that's £9000 off the price.   Fiona Howarth, chief executive at Octopus Electric Vehicles: "'Consumers who want to switch to greener driving can be put off by the more expensive initial outlay for an electric vehicle compared to petrol or diesel. But by reducing this cost, EVs will become more affordable and dramatically increase uptake. In 2019, around 100 people every day were losing their life due to poor air quality. The government can really make a difference and save lives by encouraging the switch to clean, electric cars."   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 228 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #726   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 23rd March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Welcome to a new PRODUCER MADS GYBEL VEJ ANDERSEN   ELECTRIC CARS PRODUCE LESS CO2 THAN PETROL VEHICLES, STUDY CONFIRMS "Electric vehicles produce less carbon dioxide than petrol cars across the vast majority of the globe – contrary to the claims of some detractors, who have alleged that the CO2 emitted in the production of electricity and their manufacture outweighs the benefits." reports The Guardian today: "The finding is a boost to governments, including the UK, seeking to move to net zero carbon emissions, which will require a massive expansion of the electric car fleet. Across the world, passenger road vehicles and household heating generate about a quarter of all emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. That makes electric vehicles essential to reducing overall emissions, but how clean an electric vehicle is also depends on how the electricity is generated, the efficiency of the supply and the efficiency of the vehicle. They found that in 53 out of 59 regions, comprising 95% of the world, electric vehicles and domestic heat pumps generate less carbon dioxide than fossil fuel powered cars or boilers. The only exceptions are heavily coal-dependent countries such as Poland. In countries such as Sweden, which gets most of its electricity from renewable sources, and France, which is largely powered by nuclear, the CO2 savings from using electric cars reach as high as 70% over their conventional counterparts."   Jean-Francois Mercure, of Exeter University: "“The answer is clear: to reduce carbon emissions, we should choose electric cars and household heat pumps over fossil fuel alternatives.”   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/mar/23/electric-cars-produce-less-co2-than-petrol-vehicles-study-confirms   TESLA MODEL Y OWNER DISCOVERS NEW HEAT PUMP AFTER FRUNK “TEARDOWN” "Tesla Model Y saw the introduction of a new heat pump that’s designed to be more energy-efficient and provides a more reliable range in cold weather conditions" says Teslarati: "Tesla owner Erik Strait and host of the DÆrik Youtube channel recently disassembled the front trunk (“frunk”) section of the vehicle to have a closer look at the Model Y heat pump. After removing the plastic liners in the frunk, Erik was able to discover Model Y’s heat pump located on top of the front motor assembly. Coolant lines can also be seen running through the vehicle’s firewall and to a location where Tesla’s Hardware 3 computer resides."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-heat-pump-frunk-teardown/   2021 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8 HYBRID SPIED "Though it’s still yet to hit UK soil, first customer deliveries of the all-new, mid-engined C8 Corvette have begun in the US, with the model competing with Porsche’s 992 911 Carrera. Following previous rumours of an electrified variant, photographers have already spotted a hybrid testing on the road." writes evo.co.uk - "Though a more standard hybrisied variant with similar power to the current pure-combustion car was listed, an iteration complete with an electrified 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 powertrain is said to produce 838bhp and a staggering 922lb ft of torque – these numbers lead us to believe that this would be the range-topping, track-oriented ZR1."   https://www.evo.co.uk/chevrolet/corvette/202368/2021-chevrolet-corvette-c8-hybrid-spies-pictures   JAGUAR LAND ROVER PLANS NEW ELECTRIC CROSSOVERS, THE J-PACE AND ROAD ROVER "According to a report today from UK’s Autocar, the company’s historic plant in Castle Bromwich will also produce two new electric crossovers – the Jaguar J-Pace and a Land Rover model dubbed “Road Rover.”" according to electrek: "The two new JLR models are expected to go on sale by the end of 2021. Both vehicles will be built on the new MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform. JLR is investing £1 billion ($1.15 billion) to convert its Castle Bromwich and Solihull plants to produce MLA cars. There have been hints since last year that the Jaguar I-Pace will eventually move to the MLA platform, likely when a second-generation version is created. Vehicles built on the MLA platform are reported to use a 90.2 kWh battery."   https://electrek.co/2020/03/23/jaguar-land-rover-plans-new-electric-crossovers-the-j-pace-and-road-rover/   SWISS RIDER ON HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE SETS ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE DISTANCE RECORD "Harley-Davidson's electric LiveWire offers about 100 miles of riding range, so it's not as well suited to long road trips as its gasoline-powered siblings, but that doesn't mean it can't go the distance. Swiss rider Michel von Tell proved that by setting a new 24-hour distance record (albeit an unofficial one) on Harley's first electric model." reports Autoblog: "Von Toll's record-setting, 1,070-mile trip took him to four countries in 23 hours and 48 minutes. He covered this distance on his own, and he comfortably beat the old, 818-mile record set in 2018 by a team of seven riders who took turns going around a test track on a Zero SR. Data like how much electricity Von Toll used during his trip and how many times he stopped to charge will be published by Harley-Davidson in the coming days."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/03/23/harley-davidson-livewire-electric-motorcycle-distance-record/   AUDI E-TRON HYBRID COMING 2021 "The 2021 Audi A3 Sedan will be on sale in the United States before the end of the year, according to Car and Driver citing inside sources. The A3 sedan in the U.S. will come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with mild-hybrid assistance that will make about 240 horsepower (179 kilowatts)" says Motor1.com: "In comparison, the A3 hatchback in Europe offers buyers significantly more options. The base unit is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 110 hp (82 kW). There's also a 1.5-liter unit available with or without mild-hybrid assistance, and both have 150 hp (112 kW). A 2.0-liter turbodiesel comes with either 116 hp (87 kW) or 150 hp. Two plug-in hybrid versions are coming later using a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, electric motor, and six-speed dual-clutch gearbox."   https://www.motor1.com/news/405359/2021audi-a3-sedan-rumors/   POD POINT TO DEPLOY TRITIUM DC CHARGERS ACROSS THE UK "The British charging provider Pod Point (recently acquired by EDF), has selected Australian manufacturer Tritium as a preferred supplier of DC fast chargers."   write InsideEVs: "The agreement concerns the Veefil-RT 50 kW DC chargers, which will be used in "existing and future network rollouts across the United Kingdom". Probably soon the units will be installed on a high scale at Tesco stores in the UK, as Pod Point, Volkswagen and Tesco are equipping 600 stores with charging infrastructure."   "The agreement ensures Tritium’s Veefil-RT 50kW DC rapid charger, renowned for its compact design, ease of use and low maintenance, will be offered to Pod Point’s new and existing customers as part of its continuing nationwide EV charging network rollout. Pod Point chose Tritium as its preferred DC rapid charger supplier due to the proven reliability of Tritium’s chargers, the ease and speed of installation and their unique design, which enable Pod Point to offer selected customers the ability to add their branding to each charger."   https://insideevs.com/news/405371/pod-point-tritium-dc-chargers-uk/   PORSCHE RENEWS PLAN TO MAKE MACAN CROSSOVER A "FULLY BATTERY-POWERED MODEL SERIES" "Porsche is continuing plans to make the Macan crossover all-electric. It's a significant move, as the Macan is currently Porsche's bestselling model. In a report of its 2019 financial results, Porsche reiterated that the Macan will be the "second, fully battery-powered model series"—after the Taycan." says Green Car Reprots: "The automaker previously said the electric Macan would launch in 2022; it will arrive after the upcoming Taycan Cross Turismo wagon. Porsche has said the electric Macan will replace the gasoline model entirely, but it has left the door open for the current-generation Macan to be sold alongside the all-electric next-generation model. Porsche's wording likely signals that the company doesn't intend for that transition to last long."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127535_porsche-renews-plan-to-make-macan-crossover-a-fully-battery-powered-model-series   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How can the EV community all come together at this time to support each other?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 241 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Nov 2019 - 18: Guhring has something special

In June 2017, Guhring officially opened its new 60,000sq/ft manufacturing facility on Birmingham's Advanced Manufacturing Hub.   The new £12 million UK headquarters of the globally renowned German-owned cutting tool manufacturer was opened for Guhring to realise its growth ambitions. The previous Castle Bromwich facility was home to Guhring UK for more than 40 years and the growth over the decades had certainly pushed the capacity of the facility to its limits.   At the time of the move, Guhring had a market split of 70% of standard products and 30% of UK manufactured special tooling.   In the last two years, Guhring has invested in a host of additional technology and staff at the 3.5-acre site to meet the increased demand for special tooling. What does this mean for the landscape of the transformed business model?   Standard product sales have grown year on year over the last two years.   But it's the increased capacity that has really given Guhring the impetus to drive its special tools and projects, application and engineering services.   Special tools and projects now account for 45% of sales/turnover at Guhring UK. The relentless growth of the special tooling and applications division isn't only testament to investment in new technology and staff, but also capabilities that stretch far beyond that of most UK cutting tool manufacturers.   Guhring UK’s National Sales Manager, Dave Hudson says: “We will design the tool and then send the customer a quote with a cost breakdown and a manufacturing time that could be a number of days up to a number of weeks depending upon the production criteria.   Once the customer has this data, they will place an order and we will provide the end user with a drawing, which they will sign-off.   Once this is signed-off and agreed upon with an order number, we will expedite the project to our manufacturing team.” “From a consultation perspective, our sales engineers will talk to the end user and discus the best route forward.   In many instances, a customer will be using 2, 3 or 4 tools to complete a process that can be achieved by a single tool.   Right from the initial discussion, our engineers are looking at how to reduce the number of tools in the process, reduce the number of tool changes and the impact on cycle times.   For situations like that, there may be a marked improvement on the component quality with regards to concentricity and surface finish.   This can be a critical factor where a number of tools are entering a bore and potentially creating a mis-match.” “At the end of the day, a lot of people say they prefer to use standard tools, but a standard tool is often a ‘compromise tool’.   This is because it can be used for several operations whereas a special tool is dedicated to one process.   However, if you are undertaking series production or running a part over 3-4 years or more, why not tailor the tools to the component?” “At Guhring, we use the Cutview software program.   This allows us to input the specific process and all the relevant cutting data and prepare production time studies, performance, torque and feed cutting force data that will all be relevant to the specific machine tool and workholding configurations.   By generating data that is tailored to the exact working parameters and capability of the machine tool and set-up, we can provide very detailed performance information.   At this point, more often than not; the cost of the tool is not a consideration – its all about the available benefits.   We can estimate the cycle time calculations very accurately with the Cutview software before the tool ever makes a cut.” “By detailing cost-per-piece reductions, cycle time savings and tool cost reductions, the software often provides a ‘eureka’ moment for manufacturers.   The software also accounts for the re-grind process and when built into the same equation, the benefits of Guhring special tools are evident.” “For example, we were working on a tool project for an automotive O-E-M in the UK and we were working to a tool life target of 200 metres, the reason for this was MQL machining.   Additionally, if you have 10 machines running the same process, you want consistent tool life rather than changing tools halfway through a shift.   This customer needed the 200 meters tool life, so the tool changes would coincide with a shift changeover.   We could have offered different parameters, but this O-E-M had specific targets and we worked according to the given data.” Referring to the extensive nature of the in-house services and in particular the coating department, Dave Hudson says: “We will rationalise the process and with our in-house coating facility, our engineers will discuss the best route forward for the end user.   If you are machining aluminium, you may not coat the tool and opt for a polished tool finish or it may be a choice of our Zenit coating that is a non-stick hard coating for titanium and aluminium alloys.   If customers are working on steel and hard materials, we have our Fire coating grade.   The beauty of what we have here at Guhring UK is the ability to offer more than 10 different coatings.   A lot of the coatings have been designed and developed by Guhring for specific applications and tools – they are not available from other suppliers.” “In contrast to selecting coatings, our engineers can look at a process and if a customer has a high spindle speed and the material suits P-C-D tooling, this is another avenue we can provide as an alternative to H-S-S or carbide tooling.   Likewise, the development of P-C-D tooling can all be done in-house using the same platforms and processes as carbide tooling.   This is something that very few tooling companies can provide. We can cover every eventuality.” The Guhring UK facility that's just a stone throw away from Aston Villa Football Club also has an in-house technical centre.   Commenting on this, Dave Hudson says: “We are now using our in-house technical centre more and more.   It gives us an opportunity to trial our products based on the cutting data provided by the Cutview software platform.   We’ve machined parts to the parameters in Cutview and this allows us to prove that what we say in theory, also works in practice.   The beauty of the technical centre is having the ability to get on machines and do the trials that customers cannot undertake as they do not have the spare time or machine capacity for trials.” “Our colleagues in Germany have more than 5 machines with high-speed cameras, M-Q-L, electron microscopes for inspecting tools and parts plus a range of different machine types with varying performance criteria .   With our growth trajectory, we could be aiming at the same type of facility in the UK.” The process doesn’t end with product delivery, and life-cycle management is a process that Guhring is conscious of.   According to Dave Hudson “Once the tool has completed the process and been shipped to the customer, there are often discussions over additional order quantities and potential costs.   For example, a customer may receive one tool and then decide they need 5, 10 or more.   At this point, we can schedule the order quantities and delivery dates to meet the manufacturing needs of that customer.   This often gives the customer two things. Firstly, a better price point and secondly, it provides a continuity of supply.”   “This is critically important for scenarios where the customer may break the tool, have a machine crash or encounter other unforeseen circumstances.   The security we offer customers sees us hold more than £1m of special tools on our shelves in the UK.   To bolster this security and customer confidence is our ability to service, re-tip, re-grind, re-coat and re-supply used tools in brand new condition.   Having an all-encompassing state-of-the-art manufacturing site enables us to provide service levels that far exceed the levels provided by other tooling companies.” Referring to the performance of the special division since the factory move, Dave Hudson concludes:   “The performance of our special tool division in the last two years has grown considerably, which is outperforming the impressive growth of our standard product lines.   Our continued investment in new technology on site will ensure we remain at the forefront of special tool production in the UK.”

Show #520   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 7th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.             Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Over the weekend I saw PCP added to the Model 3 design studio. For the spec I would have, which is Performance, in black, with Performance upgrade and Full Self Driving that's £59.890. PCP is £6k down and £817 a month over 4 years. Hire Purchase is £937 a month with £10,000 down and over 5 years.   From Don McAllster - waiting for his AWD Long Range Model 3! He has a petition against the 20% tax hike on solar: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/260903   VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R IMPROVES GOODWOOD HILL RECORD "On July 6, Romain Dumas made use of another run in the Volkswagen I.D. R at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed and further improved its all-time record to 39.9 seconds (compared to 41.18 seconds in the practice run)." says InsideEVs: "Both times beat the 41.60-second time set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld driving a McLaren MP4/13. We're more than certain that 20 years ago no one would have imagined that an electric car could be be quicker than an F1. The Volkswagen I.D. R driven at Goodwood is a special sprint version of the I.D. R, with a smaller battery pack, since the track length is just 1.16-mile."   https://insideevs.com/news/358506/video-vw-id-r-goodwood-hill-record-39-9-seconds/   JAGUAR LAND ROVER ANNOUNCES RANGE OF EVS TO BE BUILT IN WEST MIDLANDS PLANT "Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced it is set to build a new range of electric vehicles at its manufacturing plant in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham." reports the Evening Standard: "Honouring its commitment to deliver electrified options for all new Jaguar and Land Rover models by next year, a next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ will be the first vehicle in the range to enter production. Crafted by the team behind the Jaguar I-PACE – the brand's first all-electric car – the new saloon promises to deliver in design, performance and luxury, although the company has given no indication as to when it might take to the road. Marking the next stage of the company's electrification strategy, the news is seen as a major thumbs up to the UK's automotive industry, which has been hampered by factory closures and job cuts in recent years."   https://www.standard.co.uk/futurelondon/cleanair/jaguar-land-rover-announces-range-of-evs-to-be-built-in-west-midlands-plant-a4183371.html   TESLA YOUTUBER BJØRN NYLAND BREAKS 24-HOUR ELECTRIC CAR DISTANCE RECORD "today we’ve seen yet another reason not to worry about the capability to take EVs on long trips, as Bjørn Nyland has managed to drive 2,781km (1,728mi) in 24 hours in a Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD.  Nyland set this record on IONITY quick chargers in Germany because currently, that network is significantly faster than Tesla’s Superchargers." says Jameson Dow for InsideEVs: "Nyland wanted to emphasize that this record could be done in “realistic” conditions, so there was no closed course and common road rules were followed.  The record was set in Germany, on the Autobahn, and was done at high speeds, around 170km/h (105mph) much of the time. Staying at high speeds inbetween stops resulted in an average speed of 115km/h or 72mph over the entire 24 hours.  Essentially, he was able to travel the same distance as if he drove at US highway speeds consistently for 24 hours without stopping at all."   The sweet spot for charging at the fastest rates was 10%to 63% so they were driving a 120km loop.   https://electrek.co/2019/07/05/tesla-youtuber-breaks-24-hour-electric-car-distance-record/   UNITI ONE AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER "The Swedish electric car Uniti One is now available to pre-order with a refundable deposit of 149 euros." reports PushEVs: "Usually, small cars are very boxy with bad aerodynamics, but that’s not the case in this electric car. With two tandem seats – just like the Renault TWIZY – this electric car is perfect for the city environment.240 km range 130 km/h top speed Rear wheel drive Dual motors output of 120 kW 26 kWh battery pack, DC fast charging"   https://pushevs.com/2019/07/06/uniti-one-available-to-pre-order/   THE ODYSSEY 21 IS THE ELECTRIC OFF ROAD RACE TRUCK FORMULA E WANTS YOU TO GET EXCITED ABOUT "The Extreme E car ran up the hill during the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday afternoon. " according to Jalopnik: "According to Extreme E, the truck sits about 7.5 feet wide, 6.2 feet tall, and 14.4 feet front-to-back. The whole thing, ready to rock and roll, weighs some 3600 pounds. Each of the tires is 37 inches tall with tons of sidewall and lots of knobby Continental rubber to keep the thing trucking forward even in the nasty sand, ice, or dirt that the truck will come into contact with across the season. This is just a show car, built by Spark Racing Technologies [the same company which builds the Formula E chassis], to demonstrate what a finished product might look like."   https://jalopnik.com/the-odyssey-21-is-the-electric-off-road-race-truck-form-1836151628   RAJEEV NARAYAN "90% of your listeners may be male but I am not sure that necessarily means that EVs are a "guy thing" Currently 85% of car purchasing decisions are made by women and apparently women are more likely to buy new than men. Men are more likely the ones closing the deal at dealership, but that does not mean that women are not involved in the purchase decision, weather the vehicle is an EV or not.  Maybe a better question is why are 90% of EV news daily podcast listeners male?"   BRIAN WEATHERALL To avoid any generalising I’ll take the safer option and talk about the woman I know the best, my wife, I’m also safe to know she doesn’t listen to your podcast….. She would no more go to an EV event than to the Motor Show, to her a car is a way to go places and spend my money (sorry “our” money I am reminded).  Taking the LEAF means she can spend a little less of her money as she doesn’t need to put fuel in it.  Other than that it’s just a car to her.  But I’m happy it’s usually the first choice out of our two cars as it only really saves money when it’s moving. I can tell you in the UK Nissan Leaf Owners Group the gender split is 75% men,  many are in the group to offer help, some just for the banter, many are there to ask for help, maybe men just need more help?   HOWARD ANTHONY SMITH I do not think the demographics of your listening audience are reflective of how women perceive electric vehicles. For example, my spouse really hates listen to or watching shows about cars, but she loves driving my car (PHEV Prius Prime) in all electric mode. She is really excited about the prospects of replacing her vehicle with a Model Y when they become available in the near future. I also have female coworkers who drive Tesla's and are constantly evangelizing to others the benefits of driving electric cars. It could be that stereotypical males really love learning about cars and statistics about cars as a way of playing verbal top trumps with their friends. Personally, I find knowing about vehicles statics provides me with something to talk about in social settings. Talking about electric cars in comparison with ICE vehicles allows me plenty of material to engage with my muscle car owning friends.   STEVE JAMES Men just enjoy cars more than women across the range so it doesn’t matter if it’s a petrol, diesel, PHEV or BEV men just enjoy cars more than women.   GREG LEFF Hi Martyn -  brief note about the QOTW -here in the southwest United States in an affluent suburb of Phoenix, Arizona we have loads of EV’s running around our streets. It’s no scientific analysis but I would hazard a guess that at least 30% of the drivers of those EV’s are female. That’s a minimum guess - I could be as much as 50% or more. In my own household we have 3 vehicles, a Nissan Leaf driven by my daughter, a BMW i3 Rex driven by my wife, and a gas burner driven by me. So you see 100% of the EV’s in my house are female driven.   What you’re likely seeing in your listenership is the fact that men are more likely to nerd out over EV’s and want to listen to a podcast talking about them. The women just want to drive and enjoy the smooth, quiet, gas-free miles.   BRENNA KAMINSKI I have been involved with EVs since 2012 and after years of running EV education events, advising on infrastructure, and co-founding two EV clubs I decided to launch my own EV consulting service www.evgal.com. Before launching the website I noticed that most of the other consultants out there in the EV world are men, almost all of the videos I watch about EVs feature men hosts and "experts", and the majority of the EV conversations on platforms like LinkedIn are started by men. I know there are other women out there but we aren't being invited into the conversation.   STEPHEN AND MICHELLE LOO I believe your 90% male following on youtube / podcast is simply a representation of the market who follow motoring and technology trends. You will probably find your followers also fall into the 25-65 age group as this is the age group when most would have the income or necessity for these items.   SANDI WILLIAMS I have a Model 3 Performance, and I love, love, love it.  I listen to you probably 4-5 days a week. Did you know that the podcast came pre-loaded as an app on my car? So in case you think woman aren't listening..... this one is, and I love hearing about what is happening in the EV world and it is nice to listen to someone who isn't Tesla bashing.   VAIDAS Was asking my missus last night and she is just simply not interested too much, she needs a car thats able to safely move her from A to B in comfort and style :) I think you mentioned your wife is pretty much the same? Perhaps its a man think to talk about cars, no matter if its a V6 BMW or V8 Mustang or V12 Ferrari or  22kWh Zoe   CHARLIE FOX In the case of my home, I believe it is down to my wife doesn't really care about cars. She doesn't see value in high dollar cars and is perfectly happy with our two Prius (you know, those self-charging hybrids...)   In my case I am, generally, not a car or truck person. However, I am interested in the environment and emissions and from this have been waiting on electrics since GM starting making and crushing cars. And this makes me seek out shows like yours so I can keep up with events and watch for that opportunity to buy.   My wife has moved to agree with me that we will not buy another ICE car and we will very likely buy a 45-50k Model Y in 2022.   TOM RAFTERY Re my own thoughts on your q, driving rightly or wrongly is something men care more about than women. Go out on the street right now and check out the gender of the drivers of the cars passing you and they will be significantly skewed male. How many married couples do you know where when travelling it is the woman who drives primarily when they are going together in the car (apart from returning from the pub!)?   ARON MCINNES Are EV’s a man thing? No I don’t think it is a man thing. I think listening about, researching and dreaming about EV’s is a man thing. It is more likely that men will spend time thinking about a car. Women who drive EV’s love them. I think women just don’t obsess about there next car or what the are going to do with the car they have.   IAIN EV's don't seem that unusual in my group of friends and I wonder if gay men are more likely to be environmentally conscious and as a result are more likely to be interested in electrified transport.   DAFYDD I think men are generally more likely to be nerds, for a number of reasons. Some of which may be, that many view cars as more than just a tool, to get from A-B. Women despite some men’s attempts, still do most if not all of the family & house things. And all too often have very little time to obsess about irrelevances, such as this car can do that with only that; or will do more with less.   DAVID FINCH I checked the list of people who use our workplace EV chargers, and found that there are 7 men and 5 women. A small sample, and near enough to even. So, I think women are just as likely to own and drive an EV as men. I think men are more likely to geek-out about them though, such as listening to a podcast or visiting Fully Charged Live.   JOHN FRUHWIRTH In the early days of computing, computers were also a "male" thing until social media came along. As soon as that happened, women became interested as they could now indulge their top priority - relationships.     Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. Show #514   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 30th June 2019. JAGUAR TO ANNOUNCE HUGE INVESTMENT IN UK ELECTRIC CAR MANUFACTURING "Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will plough hundreds of millions of pounds into the British car industry by preparing one of its factories to build electric cars, in a much-needed boost for the sector." says City AM "JLR will modify its Castle Bromwich plant to build a series of three all-electric models, starting with an electric version of its luxury Jaguar XJ saloon, which is expected to launch next year. The plans, first reported in the Sunday Times, are set to be announced on Friday. The investment is a positive move by Britain’s biggest carmaker, which has struggled amid decreasing demand for diesel models."   https://www.cityam.com/jaguar-to-announce-huge-investment-in-uk-electric-car-manufacturing/   And from Automotive News Europe: "Jaguar Land Rover said during an investor day on June 5 that it will launch its Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) electric-capable platform on a "large SUV and a large premium sedan. MLA can be adapted for pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and mild-hybrid drivetrains. Electric cars using the MLA platform will have a range of up to 470 km (292 miles). JLR's first electric SUV is expected to be a battery-powered version of the next-generation Range Rover."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/jaguar-land-rover-will-build-electric-cars-uk-factory-paper-says   VOLKSWAGEN PARTIALLY FLOATS TRUCK GROUP TO FUND ELECTRIC CAR PUSH "Volkswagen has floated 11.5 per cent of its truck-making unit, now named Traton, on the Frankfurt and Nasdaq Stockholm stock exchanges. Weak demand from investors had forced the automaker to price the listing at the low end of its target price range. It also meant the company couldn't float the 25 per cent it had wanted to let go of." according to CarAdvice.com.au: "The Volkswagen Group is spending roughly €40 billion ($65 billion) to engineer an extensive range of electric cars, including affordable vehicles based on the new MEB platform, as well as more exclusive vehicles, like the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT."   https://www.caradvice.com.au/770107/volkswagen-partially-floats-truck-group-to-fund-electric-car-push/     DRIVING AN ELECTRIC CAR FEELS LIKE A GAME From Sasha Lekach at MashableUK: "You can't drive a certain way and bring in more fuel in an internal-combustion engine vehicle; your fuel gauge only goes one direction: down. The hypermiling community tries to maximize fuel efficiency while driving, but the fuel supply never replenishes. But driving an EV, I was hooked — driving could essentially become a game, saving me money and energy as the battery recharged when I slowed down or naturally sped up heading down a hill. It also helped that the screen would indicate in real-time how much power I was generating or using."   https://mashable.com/article/electric-vehicles-versus-gas-cars-regenerative-breaking-fun   NORWAY TESLA MODEL 3 SALES IN 2019 EQUAL 50% OF MODEL S SALES SINCE 2013 "How popular is the Tesla Model 3 in Norway? According to TeslaStats.no, pretty darn popular, with 10,539 registered so far this year. (Two were registered in 2018.) Compare that to the 20,194 Model S sedans registered in Norway since 2013 and the 12,471 Model X SUVs registered since 2016." reports Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "It’s true that Norway has aggressive incentives for electric car buyers and those incentives have made that nation one of the global leaders in electric car adoption. But despite the silliness spouted by BMW’s head of research and development, Klaus Fröelich (he told an audience last week, “Boo hoo. Nobody wants to buy electric cars!”), there are lots of people who are very happy to buy an electric car if the terms are right"   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/29/norway-tesla-model-3-sales-in-2019-equal-50-of-model-s-sales-since-2013   ELECTRIFY AMERICA REDUCES POWER OF SOME CHARGERS DUE TO COOLING ISSUE Another issue with liquid cooled fast-charging stations was reported, but this time it ended with simply lowering power output (instead of a total shut down). According to Green Car Reports' article, Electrify America was forced to reduce the power of 30 CCS chargers "due to concerns over a potential coolant leak". The affected chargers are reportedly Efacec HV160 and Efacec HV350 and the issue is global. Electrify America decided to lower the power from 160 kW/320 kW to 50 kW until the service team can visit the station and solve the issue (expected "within a week").   CHINA BEGINS SUBSIDY CUTS ON MUNICIPAL LEVEL “The Beijing government has abolished municipal subsidies for some electric vehicles. Manufacturers of electric vehicles in China can now only be granted subsidies from the central government before these are phased out next year." says electrive.com: "Subsidies for battery electric buses, city cleaning electric vehicles and electric vehicles purchased by government agencies are not affected by the change. Similarly, fuel cell vehicles will continue to receive both municipal and state subsidies. Earlier this year, the Chinese government announced that it will be cutting its subsidies for electric cars this year before they are to be completely abolished by 2020."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/29/china-begins-subsidy-cuts-on-municipal-level/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Doug Vowles, Brighton, Ontario, Canada Yes, EV’s have tons to prove, just not to me, to you, or most of your listeners.  But they have much to prove to folks who can only afford a 15 year old $2,000 car or pick-up truck, and MUST have a vehicle for work, to drive to work, or to drive the kids to school.  They have much to prove to the rural sector with scant access to charging stations, or those who live well away from major transportation corridors with fast chargers.  You get the picture.   Pete GORTON aka @GyroGordini In summary “Not Really”.  We just need to get: - the price down, - many more models available, and - people discounting the FUD. To elaborate, EVs have been shown to be faster, stronger, more reliable and cheaper to operate, and a number of endurance tests have shown they can do nearly anything.   ROB CRAWFORD Yes, especially with the Wall Street, who can't think past the next quarter, who listen to the egregious CNBC FUD about Tesla. I would encourage all EV owners to call your local TV News shows and tell them how owning an EV has changed the way you live your life now sans Petrol-gasoline! You'll have a local news team knocking on your front door. Tell them how you race your EV against ICE cars and beat them hands down. You'll get the local news Sportscaster out to your house.   STEVE JAMES The only thing EV’s need to prove going forward is that they cost the same as a ICE car as the cost at the moment is so stretched in favour of not being unable to afford a brand new off the forecourt car.   YASH OHJA, BANGALORE So my opinion on EVs having more to prove is that; Can EVs (battery and battery- fuel cells) withstand and perform normally (during their complete lifecycle) the high temperatures (going up to 50deg C in few parts of our country)!! Another point would be a bit something on the higher horse power segment .EV have to prove that can they successfully take over the locomotives and marine exhausts (the high horse power engines), which will be a good test!!   MARK GARNETT I think with current EVs and imminent EVs from Mercedes,  Porsche, Honda and VW we are in a good position to crush ICE sakes once-and-fir-all.   What isn’t yet proven is the ability of the traditional OEMs to make EVs in useful volumes, as you said last Sunday, we keep hearing that battery contracts are secured but then get new announcements from the same players a bit later. The main thing holding back EV adoption now is availability; let’s not forget many vehicles are still leased or company cars, so these need replacing when the previous   ROGER STARKEY Very little left to prove A lot to explain , educate. That's where you, and TryEv come in!   Stefan Weilhartner • 1 day ago yes, BEV have something to prove: a cheaper total cost of ownership if you don't have a huge mileage per year.   D R-K  The electric car still has plenty to prove.... to the wholly uninformed who get the majority of their news from traditional media who fill their pages, airwaves and sites with FUD. Until they go mainstream and produce car commercials, the majority outside of our growing movement still think they are just a bit better than milk floats.     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube…   I’ve been checking my stats and over 90% of listeners are men, so why are EVs still a ‘guy thing’?     I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 230 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Jaguar Land Rover moved 2,000 staff at its Castle Bromwich plant to a three-day week, the manufacturer said they made the decision following difficult conditions in the industry, caused by Brexit and slumping sales of diesel-powered cars. Can this stall in UK car production be reversed? The UK capital was extra glamorous this week as fashionistas jetted into town for London Fashion Week. Victoria Beckham's first UK show was declared a "runway" success. Her family were in the front row to support her, but did the smiling photos show the full picture?   A flurry of stories suggested that hugely popular video game Fortnite was responsible for 200 divorces a year. But a close look at the research by the Independent found that Fortnite's marriage wrecking ability had been over exaggerated. A poorly worded press release? Or a calculated attempt to exploit the popularity of Fortnite? Australia has been gripped by a national strawberry scare after sewing needles have been found hidden in the fruit. What would compel someone to commit this type of crime? Finally, Dan joined us to talk through his Media Moment of Week. Ofcom has called for independent internet regulation, following new research warning that 20% of Britons have been harmed by web content. Should the internet be regulated and does Ofcom have the clout to do it?

Start of production – AMS Podcast Episode 01 The very first AMS podcast rolls off the assembly line and the team discuss two giants of the automotive manufacturing, Toyota and Ford. AMS editor Nick Holt talks about his visit to Toyota’s Valenciennes facility in France, a plant undergoing a dual transformation – upgrading lines for the new TNGA platform plus shifting its focus from diesel variants to hybrid electric models. Turkey was the topic for AMS assistant editor Michael Nash, who fills us in on his trip to the Transit, Custom and Courier van production at the three sites that make up Ford Otosan. Recorded from the comfort of a Castle Bromwich-built Jaguar XE R Sport, Episode 1 is produced and presented by the AMS editorial team, Nick Holt, Gareth Price and Michael Nash.
