I had a fantastic conversation with Sean Folkson. Here are some notes from our conversation: Sean grew up in Douglaston, in Queens. He was thankfully a New York Yankees fan but is mostly a hockey fan – New York Rangers fan. This started a 5 minute conversation about hockey. He mentioned the famous Mark Messier Hat-Trick vs. the NJ Devils in Game 6. He worked for Enterprise Rent a Car. Here is a history of them. I mentioned Tony Robbins idea of not a lack of resources but rather a lack of resourcefulness. Sean explained what a floor scraper is. However, a picture is worth 1000 words and this video even more! Sean mentioned Halo Top – the ice cream alternative that started a market segment. As he was discussing the taste of his ice cream, Sean named dropped Chef Chris Santos. I was unaware of the American Pregnancy Association which Sean mentioned and of course his highly unusual pickle flavor, Pickles For Two. Sean's company is Nightfood. You can find the company on all the socials and you can find Sean too on linkedin under his name, Sean Folkson.

Today on the podcast, Sean speaks with Chris Santos the 6th grade, Pastor in Elevate regarding the recent Mexico missions trip with the 6th graders. Chris along with 9 other adults took 9 - 6th graders, a junior high student and a high school student on a 5-day Mexico Mission trip. The team flew from Northern California to San Diego and then rented minivans and drove over the border. They went to work with SOW Ministries (Serving Orphans and Widows) in Mexico. Each day was full of amazing ministry opportunities and outreach. Chris gives detailed information of their day to day schedule. The great opportunity with SOW is that they will plan everything, all you have to do is get your team there. Partnering with a local organization is the smart way to do a mission trip because they know the area and the needs of the people in that area. Today on the podcast, Sean speaks with Chris Santos about coteaching during services. Sean and Chris have been coteaching in Elevate and they have 3 ways they have been toying with when it comes to coteaching. The pros of coteaching that they have seen are the idea of seeing the two pastors work together as well as certain preteens resonating more with one pastor over another, adding strength to the ministry. Some of the drawbacks is that one speaker needs to stay on script to stay on schedule, the energy can compete with a difference in energy levels between the two speakers. The three methods that have worked for Elevate are: Line by Line: Write a message and determine who will speak which parts. Section by Section: One speaker does the first piece, which in Elevate is the “Lesson Set-up” while the other speaker does the main message. Week by Week: In this style each week is a different speaker. This goes back to the pro thought that some kids resonate better with certain speakers. Share the teaching. If you are by yourself there might be a small group leader that is willing to step up and teach. Don’t be worried that they won’t be able to do it as well as you. Today on the podcast, Sean speaks with Chris Santos the 6th grade, Pastor in Elevate regarding the production of Dry Bones. One of the visions of the 6th grade ministry was to get the 6th graders more involved in the process of the ministry. The 6th graders were part of an illustrated message, which was only part of the actual service. This is taking the idea of having students act out a portion of your message when you call them up front, to having the students dance, sing and speak after weeks of practice and rehearsals. There are so many benefits that can come from doing something like this. There is an impact on the students when they are a part of this small team doing a performance like this. Allowing students to feel like God is using their talents to speak to others can be very beneficial for their growth as well. Today on the podcast, Sean discusses the idea of doorframe prayers. This was an idea thought up by Chris Santos, the 6th grade pastor in Elevate. The doorframe in the 6th grade ministry space is metal, and magnets will stick to it. Chris bought magnets and stuck stickers to them and invited the preteens to put a name on a magnet of a friend from school, the neighborhood, or sports teams that they would like to see walk through the doors of the ministry space. This is a great hook to get the preteens involved in the message of evangelism. Preteens are more engaged to invite people to church when they have a specific person in mind. If you offer a hook before you give the message the preteens will be more engaged in the message. So, in this case having them think of a friend beforehand makes it easier for them to understand the context of the message. So as Pastor Chris, in this case, was talking about evangelism the preteens are more engaged because they have a person in mind of who they want to evangelize too.
