A vibrant conversation unfolds between Megan and her guest, Christie Mims that leads to an insightful exploration of Christie's journey and methodologies in the coaching industry. She shares her path to establishing her coaching business, emphasizing her non-linear trajectory from history major and consultant to a certified life coach.Throughout the conversation, Megan and Christie discuss common challenges faced by new coaches, particularly regarding mindset. Christie outlines prevalent patterns of limiting beliefs that often hinder new coaches, emphasizing the necessity of treating coaching as a business rather than merely a practice to find clients. She passionately illustrates the critical need for new coaches to develop business acumen alongside coaching skills, underscoring the importance of building core systems within their businesses. Christie's five essential systems for successful coaching businesses – coaching, onboarding, conversion, education, and marketing – serve as the cornerstone for a sustainable and profitable practice. The two delve into practical strategies for generating leads and maintaining client engagement while recognizing that many new coaches fall into the trap of seeking immediate financial success rather than building a long-term, viable business. Christie urges aspiring coaches to focus on consistent lead generation through organic means such as public speaking, writing, and engaging with existing audiences rather than attempting hasty ads before they have a firm grasp of their offerings. They touch on the layered complexities of various business models within the coaching industry, promoting the significance of private coaching in establishing a solid foundation for new coaches. Christy cautions against the allure of group coaching models that promise ease but often require extensive resources and advanced marketing skills that many new coaches lack. Additionally, she encourages focusing on niches to stand out in a crowded market, emphasizing that their unique life experiences and personalities are key differentiators among similar services. This episode not only provides inspiring insights into Christie's entrepreneurial journey but also presents actionable advice for aspiring coaches, reinforcing the essential blend of passion, business acumen, and community support in building a successful coaching practice.HIGHLIGHTS:3:19 The Journey to Coaching5:33 Teaching and Transition10:39 Common Limiting Beliefs in Coaching13:48 Understanding Business Systems18:28 Importance of Training Over Coaching20:48 Self-Study vs. Group Coaching25:12 The Case for One-on-One Coaching27:57 Business Models for New Coaches32:28 Simplifying the Coaching Business Model34:39 Marketing Strategies for New Coaches39:03 Utilizing Other People's Audiences42:34 Standing Out in a Saturated MarketCONNECT WITH CHRISTIE:WebsiteCoach Pony on FB for new coachesMENTIONED IN EPISODE:Essentialism by Greg McKeownMegan Huber's Socials & Resources:LinkedIn |

Writing a book is a great way to create some passive income while you also cement your coaching knowledge and life experience into one lower-cost, marketable item that you can sell for years to come.   Books are great tools to help people get to know you and enter your coaching world, and build the trust that can ultimately turn them into a client.   Your book can also help raise your profile and bring you visibility as a thought leader, which can lead to wanting to book you (see what I did there?) for speaking engagements.   It's also fantastic when you can codify your expertise as a coach, and really refine your system (writing makes you focus!).   So: You've got the skills, the knowledge and the desire, but where to start?   We became entrepreneurs so that we can do the work that we love.   If you're going to have a crappy job and be miserable, have a regular old jobby job! There is no reason that you have to build a business model that makes you miserable.   A lot of people want to get out of doing client work because it's a model that they don't love or they have just gotten tired of it.   There is no shame in looking for a change.   And for some, teaching online courses is just the change that they are looking for–a way to start fresh and rediscover the love that brought them to coaching in the first place.   Today, we are continuing our series of conversations with 6 and 7-figure coaches about how they got their first paying client and what they would do differently today.   And this episode is a little different: I'm talking with the founder of Paperbell Coaching Software, Laura Roeder.   Laura is a lifelong entrepreneur and founder of several multi-million dollar bootstrap companies – MeetEdgar, Marie Forleo's B-School, and LKR Social Media.   Here's the thing: Laura didn't get started coaching. She started as a web designer and realized that coaching and consulting on social media was a better model for her than running a design agency.   But she didn't choose a conventional coaching path. Instead, she discovered online courses and the rest, as they say, is history. Or rather, the rest is in this episode of Coach Pony!   By simply following a business path that excited her she has been able to build a business model that she loves.   Listen to the full episode to hear: How a client in the fashion industry led her to discover the world of online business courses How Laura has built up an audience through guest posting, blogging, newsletters, and social media How Laura's lowest moment as an entrepreneur involved trudging through blizzards to brave chamber of commerce meetings What Laura sees as the top pitfalls with online courses and membership sites   Book Recommendations: The Road Less Stupid by Keith J. Christie Mims.   Before Coach Pony, I founded, and still own and operate, a career coaching business called The Revolutionary Club. I have gotten to know Christie Mims over the over the years and really respect the business that she's built around career coaching around helping people with their careers in a variety of different ways. And we'll get to bring her on and showcase not just her story, and how this has happened for her. But some of the ways that I would say she has even really, really crafted that, that fit within her business I'm going to go so far as to say, shaped the industry in a lot of different ways. Christie was a fancy pants consultant in DC. And she got to the point where she was just miserable. And her career, even though it was really lucrative, and she felt all this guilt. And so Christie started investigating all these other careers: she was looking at becoming a shoe designer; there was a brief period where she thought maybe she just wanted to work for Bravo TV, and produce the real housewives. But one thing that Christie also looked into was coaching, because a lot of the consultants she worked with were getting certified as coaches. And it seemed like an interesting career. And it was something that she thought would be at least she could use it as a consultant. So as part of her career research when she was investigating different job paths, Christie signed up for a coaching weekend, and she was super cynical. But she showed up and just fell in love with it. It was like being in the desert. And then all of a sudden someone offers you a glass of water. And it was amazing. But she was terrified when she quit her job to start coaching full-time. "So I was continuing as a consultant and I started to set up some business stuff, but I was still I was still pretty afraid. So nothing happened right away. But eventually, I mustered up my courage to quit my job and go full time as the coach because I just, you know, was looking around thinking, I was on the DC metro, and I was just thinking, like, Am I going to wake up 10 years from now, because these people look like they died 10 years ago, you know, I just gonna wake up 10 years from now. And just cuz, you know, is this my life like I at least have to try? I owe it to myself to try." But Christie started her career coaching business anyway. Her business grew and adapted over the years. On the podcast today, she not only shares about the struggles and fears she had to overcome, but also gives practical advice for those just getting started - and to start in a way that won't overwhelm you in the process.

What is my passion?? Passion can be defined in many ways in relation to your career. Christie Mims, the founder of the Revolutionary Club, a Forbes Top 100 website for your career, wants people to separate their passion from their job. According to her, in the grander scale of things, passion is bigger than just your job. So, what is passion? Basically, passion is who you are and your job is how you express that passion. Passion is your North Star and your job is fueled by your passion. Finding out what is your passion takes a little bit of courage in order to get off the beaten career path and embrace who you are and what motivates you to do good work. “You can be known for being a strategic thinker. You can be known for being the person that’s calm in a crisis. You can be known for being the person who has a great sense of humor who is able to connect with people.” You can help identify some of your best qualities to find your passion by thinking about some of your biggest personality traits that are positive and start to socialize those traits with yourself and learn ways you can best communicate them to others. Why is career transition so important? Christie says we treat our jobs as Disney treats love. That is not really the case, though. Your career is something that is going to span 50+ years. When you enjoy your work, you tend to live a healthier and longer life. The more we invest in our careers, the happier we are in our careers. What is the #1 thing that holds people back in making a career change? Fear holds people back. Fear of failure, of not liking your new choice of career. Most people let the fear seep in and talk ourselves out of this big change. Sometimes it is easier to stay stuck than to make a change. What can people do to overcome their fear? The best way to conquer your fears is to find a sense of community. Once you know that others feel the same and you get to talk about your fears and feel normal about it, it can help you face your fears. Also, get expert support and a plan. If you knew the answers, you would do it. So, let someone guide you towards getting over your fears. What is the career happiness revolution? When you find your passion, you are reconnecting with who you really are, which we tend to cover up by our safe jobs. When you stop following everyone else, it is a revolution. It can feel like you are shaking up your life. The revolution club is a space where people can talk honestly about their careers. She believes that if we can change the talk about work, we can change people’s lives. What are the benefits of your free program, New Year, New Career, No Fear? After taking this program, students have said they found their passion or asked their boss for a raise. People said they have never felt better in their careers. There is no better time to be thinking about your career. The economy is finally getting better. Companies are changing their structures to allow for more freedom. What is your favorite career success story? After a change in the way she thought and a career shift, one of Christie’s students is now an environmental engineer and she says she would never have had the courage to do it without the course. She did not believe it was possible. Another student is going to make more money in his own business than he is now and has a year of work already lined up. She has been featured in Forbes, US News, and a variety of other media hotspots. On the show, career coach and founder of the Revolutionary Club - The #1 destination for smart women who won't settle for anything less than career happiness, Christie Mims. She talks about how she was able to find clarity over craziness and gives the one trigger that has never failed her.  Christie's backstory >>> Like many people circling the wheel of corporate performance and measures, she tricked herself into believing that with the next promotion, she would, finally, be happy. Sharing openly on ReLaunch! that, while working herself into positions of respect and admirability, she was miserable on the inside. She tried to medicate herself away from the misery (like many of us do or have done), seeking thrills and experiences that would numb the pain - exotic vacations, shopping, over-eating, and watching too much TV. She knew a new plan was needed, designed around her passions, but she was scared - scared others would find out that she didn't like her job and scared that she didn't really have a passion. To ReLaunch! her life and career, Christie gave herself three favors: She hired a coach; She explored (you have to hear the ideas she tried!) She took action.  Follow Christie and the Revolutionary Club on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, and visit her site.
