Bruce Smith is the Founder & CEO of Hydrow, the leading at-home connected rower that brings the on-water experience of rowing straight to your home. A lifelong entrepreneur, rower and coach, Bruce has dedicated his career to helping others experience the power of the sport at all levels. Bruce founded Hydrow to capture the unique experience of on-water rowing and make it universally accessible, helping people everywhere feel more connected to one another and live healthier lives on a daily basis. In this podcast, host Kiri Masters and Bruce discuss: How did Bruce first fall in love with rowing? How Bruce led Community Rowing in Boston to become the largest rowing outreach organization in the world, and tripled operating income of the organization, during the great financial crisis. How Bruce came to found Hydrow and early days. How Hydrow is building a content-first, product-led DTC strategy. How personalization has been a big unlock as a strategy - leveraging 1P data from customers. In comparison to a market awareness approach. Hydrow also sells on Amazon. At one point in time, that was taboo for DTC brands. What place does marketplaces like Amazon have for Hydrow, now and in the future?

With a lifetime of experience as a championship-winning rower, the former president of Chicago Union Rowing and Paddling, and the coach of the U.S. National Team, Bruce has always been passionate about moving the sport of rowing forward due to its positive impacts on the body and the mind. However, you might say his life's work was predestined. Long after he fell in love with rowing, Bruce discovered quite by accident that his ancestors were, in fact, a legendary rowing family. In addition, his great grandfather was a master boat builder in Cambridge who made the first sliding seats in racing shells. Throughout his career, Bruce has remained steadfastly committed to improving communities by making rowing accessible to all, including his work previously as the executive director of Community Rowing in Boston. He also founded Lincoln Park Juniors, a rowing program in Chicago for underserved youth. Today, Bruce continues to thoughtfully innovate new ways to make the water and the rowing world more accessible, while also improving the communities in which we live. Bruce will tell you it was the “swing” of the rhythm of rowing in perfect harmony with his teammates that bonded him to the boathouse and the lifestyle. And he says that same “swing” is what continues to move the entire rowing community into the future. Under his guidance, the Hydrow team has been able to create a world-class way to do that: our rowers. Together, we continue the movement, with a state-of-the-art home fitness offering that grants you access to world-class waterways, the sport's most elite Athletes, whole-body health, and a community that spans centuries, and the globe.

She talks about her 9-year rowing career starting as a 5' 8” sixth grader at the Reach High program of Baltimore Community Rowing, which led to an elite rowing career on the 2015 U.S. Rowing Junior National Team, 2015-2016 Youth National Championships, and 2016 Henley Women's Regatta. Now, she's a sophomore at Rutgers University rowing on the Women's Crew Team. What's unique about her experience is that she goes from a mostly black high school rowing team to a mostly white collegiate rowing team. Mark Wilson: Listener Poll (respond in comments): What is your favorite race to be a participant and spectator? What are your thoughts about 2K vs 1K for masters? Dexter Reservoir Regatta, Eugene OR hosted 28 clubs and over 500 entries - 2000m for most and 1000m for masters. Do masters want 2K (see above)? See also Covered Bridge Regatta. Never Too Old to Race: The Boat Race 165th running for men and 74th for women was just held in Oxford/Cambridge, UK (since 1829). Heads up, masters: The oldest competitor was James Cracknell, age 46. Granted, he is a double Olympian, has rowed across the Atlantic and biked across the USA - not your normal 46-year-old! Spring Training and Safety Everyone wants to get out and get miles, but we need to live to row another day. Watch for flooding, cold temps, rusty skills, spring thunderstorms, newbie rowers, new hazards in the water. Be careful, in control, and aware of your surroundings. Once training, pick some goal events. Think about which ones are the most important to you and how to train for those two or three events through early or less important races. Fewer, quality miles are better than more mediocre miles. Vince Lombardi didn’t say “Practice makes perfect.” He did say, “Perfect Practice Makes Perfect!” Good words to live by. Use your technology in a positive way. Not only to log total meters but also the number of strokes, the rate, time rowed, and time NOT rowing. Distance per stroke (DPS) is a good measure of where you stand this time of year. Today Bruce is on a mission to provide everyday people with a magical experience of being on real water within the comfort of their homes via a beautiful machine, Hydrow.Listen to this week's episode to learn everything from A to Z about rowing and get a sneak peak into how Bruce is turning Hydrow into the Peloton for rowing.Three Things You Will Learn1) Why Rowing Is The Best Workout Of AllGoing for a spin class is of course a good enough exercise. But why would you go for good enough instead of the best? Rowing is the absolute full-body training that uses 86% of your muscles, everything from your legs to your arms and even your core.On top of this it is also an amazing team sport that requires you to be in complete sync with 7 other people in your boat. Humans are naturally wired to like being in sync. For us this is a genuine way of connecting with others. Hence, rowing is not simply good for your physical health, but it also delivers great psychological benefits.Press play to find out more about the science behind rowing and why you'll enjoy it even more with Hydrow!2) Behind The Scenes of Hydrow's Live Outdoor RealityIf you haven't heard of Live Outdoor Reality yet, it's about time as it might just be the next big fitness trend coming our way. The first fitness equipment that uses LOR is Hydrow.Hydrow basically teleports you to an outdoor water and with an opportunity to join in real-time workouts coached by professional rowers. Sounds like magic, but all it really takes is a talented camera crew, a very dedicated team, and some charismatic rower instructors. And of course, Hydrow.Tune in to hear all about the sneak peaks of capturing & bringing the magical experience of outdoors rowing to your living room!3) The Future of Fitness & HydrowHydrow is a very new concept that brings a real first-of-its-kind experience to its users. This was also recognized by the health & fitness community, as they sold out all their pre-orders in just a matter of minutes. So Hydrow's success has definitely been great so far, but Bruce and his team are not planning to slow down on innovation anytime soon. The next big step for Hydrow is the introduction of Augmented Reality. Listen on to hear about Bruce's 5-year AR vision of looking over your shoulder and seeing the person you're rowing with!

Ready, Row! USA - Show Notes Gadgets & Gear with Ellen Minzner - Para Rowing & More Watch link: https://youtu.be/Hb9C63pd6Sk HOST: Charlotte Pierce, Publisher at Pierce Press. I'm also a masters sculler of about 6 years, and a member of Community Rowing in Boston. CONTRIBUTOR: Ellen Minzner, Olympic Para Team coach and Director of Inclusion & Advocacy at Community Rowing in Boston. Welcome to the fourth episode of Ready, Row! USA, a production of the RowingChat international podcast network. Our primary topic today is one that’s near and dear to my heart - GADGETS & GEAR! Last week we previewed some exciting new tech for connected athletes and today, we’re continuing the discussion with our regular contributor Ellen Minzner Ellen began rowing as a lightweight at Villanova, rowed on the US Lightweight team from 1991-96, coached for several years at high school, college, and national camps. She’s currently Head Coach for the US Para Rowing Team. HIGHLIGHTS FROM ELLEN: Just returned from San Diego Olympic Training Center for the first Para rowing camp of the year. Exciting to see all the new faces and teams forming. (Ellen) NEWS FLASH: CRI is in negotiations with US Rowing to become a designated US Paralympic training center. Hopefully we’ll have official word on that to be out later this month. https://USRowing.org Ellen attended the Power10 Dinner last night in NYC, honoring Martin Cross and his outstanding career as an oarsman, announcer, and all-around enthusiast of exciting races. Fun hearing his selection of the “Top 10” races of the year - not all the marquee races you’d expect! (Ellen) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_... Not so much a gadget as an idea that we’ve been working on, especially for the PR2 category. We’re finding that para rowers can safely negotiate a standard Olympic hull, which opens up a lot of possibilities and expands the para athletic experience. Resolute Adaptive has been a big supporter of this idea. https://www.facebook.com/ResoluteAdap... Bob Berry of Remote Coxswain has developed a rudder device that allows visually impaired single scullers to row regular boats. Watch this video (https://goo.gl/evomYu) of a blind sculler docking while the coaches steer him in remotely. Ellen noted that the remote coxswain could apply more broadly to all para rowing, not just visually impaired. http://remotecoxswain.com/ Lots to think about, so many gadgets to improve people's athletic experiences, so many exciting tech developments! We’ll be wrapping up the current Gadgets & Gear series on Jan. 25 when we hope to bring in engineer Andy Crumpholt from the busy workshop at Community Rowing in Boston, Massachusetts. Ready, Row! Hello, and WELCOME to the Bare Bones Yoga Podcast: Conversations for Yoga Teachers! This is EPISODE 11 and today we’re going to be talking about overcoming challenges. This is certainly a topic we ALL can relate to and my guest has a unique perspective on it. She works with people with physical disabilities, coaching them in one of the toughest sports out there: crew.   Let me start out by saying this: This guest, whom I’ll introduce to you in a moment, is part of my special wellness event coming up in January called The Bare Bones Yoga Urban Wellness Weekend. This event is a two day opportunity for you to practice yoga, meditation, learn myofascial release, hear from expert speakers on different aspects of wellness, eat healthy food, hear inspiring stories from the speaker panel and more. It’s really a life changing line up that’s meant to shift your ways of thinking in positive ways and give you real information, not fluff stuff, about how to improve your health! This event is Jan 12/13 in Cambridge MA. To check out the event, all you need to do is go to the link above. And guess what? Early bird rates apply until 12/15 AND for being a podcast listener, you get a $25 discount off registration! To get it, just email me BEFORE YOU SIGN UP, say you want the podcast listener discount and I’ll send you a special link to pay. So, let’s get to the next step, introducing Jenny Sichel! Jennifer Sichel is an American coxswain. She competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, won 3 silver medals from the World Rowing Championships and a silver medal from the 2016 Paralympic Games. She is a Royal Canadian Henley Regatta champion, a five-time Head of the Charles Regatta champion, and three-time U.S. national champion. She is the coordinator for the Youth Para Rowing (Adaptive Rowing) Department at Community Rowing in Boston.  So, think about this. Think about something you really want to do but you’ve got an obstacle in the way. It could be a mental block, a fear; it could be a physical challenge.. maybe you don’t think you’re strong enough or have the endurance. A story that you might hear now and again is that of someone who wants to run a marathon and they’ve never run one before. They might have both mental fears and physical obstacles that get in their way. How do you handle challenges? That’s in large part what we’ll touch on today. Let’s get to it!

In Episode 2, the Short and Snarky Coxswains talk about a flawless victory at the 2016 Iowa Caucus...by none other than a rower on the erg! In the midst of a crazy state, this lone wolf rower is going steady state on the catwalk of a community center in Jefferson, Iowa. We interview Robin Kenny, a USRowing Referee. Robin began her rowing career at Ithaca College, and has been in love with it, ever since. Post-College, she moved back home to the Rowing Mecca of the world - Boston, MA - where she was a coach at Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI). Now living in the Southwest, Robin gives us insight to the Do's and Don't's of getting down to the Start Line, how to be prepared for races, and some referee pet peeves. (Hint: Go to the bathroom before you launch... Or hope you get a cool Ref like Robin.) --------------------------------------- This episode, and every episode of the Way Nuff Podcast is written and produced by the Short and Snarky Coxswains. Who better to read aloud Kenneth Grahame's famous passage about the delight of "messing about in boats" than the rowers and staff at Boston's Community Rowing, Inc.? The Drum stopped by the boathouse early one morning last week and found a group of willing--and even enthusiastic--participants just coming off the water. Community Rowing is one of the largest public boat clubs in the United States, introducing people of all ages and all abilities to the sport of rowing. Visit their website for more info.
