Bettina from Laurel Glen Vineyard is our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Bettina's father Peter M. F. Sichel recently passed away at 102. He was an old friend of Dan Berger who credits him with great contributions to winemaking, in Germany and in the US. Dan wrote a review of Peter's book called “The Secrets of My Life: Vintner, Soldier, Prisoner, Spy.” He was instrumental in making Blue Nun wine popular, a dry white wine from Germany. Dan describes the story of Blue Nun as a story of the Atomic Age. There is a bottle of it on the cover of the Fleetwood Mac album Rumors and there is a Beastie Boys song called Blue Nun. Blue Nun was very popular in the 1970s. The brand ran radio advertisements nationally that were written and recorded by Stiller & Meara. The fact that people would plant Cabernet up there is “outrageous” says Dan. It makes a special kind of wine. Bettina says it's a great site for Cabernet. In the 1990s, Cabernet was a much more restrained, a low-alcohol wine with high acidity. That is still the Lauren Glen style. Sonoma Mountain AVA The vineyard was first planted to Cabernet in the 1960s. They are located on a plateau. The Sonoma Mountain AVA is on the east side of the mountain. The west side of the mountain is now the Petaluma Gap AVA. The mountain blocks the wind and fog. They don't achieve the degree of ripeness that Napa Cabernets do, which produces what Dan calls a richer, oaky, more concentrated and higher in alcohol. California Wine Country is brought to you by Rodney Strong Vineyards and Davis Bynum Wines. Next for tasting is a Riesling that comes from a vineyard on the central coast near Monterrey. They are the last grapes that come into the winery, after all the other grapes. That shows what a long maturation process these grapes require. Dan can think of only about 5 vineyards in California that produce high quality dry Riesling and this is one of them. They make three Cabernets, a Rosé and some Gruner Veltliner.

Eine heute in Gebrauch stehende Sichel dient zum Schneiden kleiner Mengen von Getreide und Gras. Sie besteht aus einer nach vorn sich verjüngenden, konkav gekrümmten Klinge mit einem hölzernen Handgriff. Sie unterscheidet sich von der Sense durch die kleinere Klinge und den kürzeren Stiel. Wer mit der Sense oder der Sichel erntet, schneidet möglichst viel vom Erntegut ab - aber die Wurzel der Pflanze wird durch den Schnitt im Boden gelassen und damit auch das Potenzial für erneutes Wachstum. Eine Art Kahlschlag ohne Zerstörung des Kerns. Kahlschläge braucht es im Leben immer mal wieder. Vielleicht in manchen Augen extreme Entscheidungen, aber notwendig, um das Bisherige zum Ende zu bringen in Form einer Ernte und Platz für Neues zu schaffen. Dabei kann die Fruchtbarkeit des Alten dem Neuen dienen und etwas Neues oder Art-verwandtes als nächstes Hervorbringen. Ernte ist Freude und Trauer zugleich: Freude über den geernteten Ertrag, Trauer um das bisher Gewachsene. Ich wünsche Dir einen aussergewöhnlichen Tag!

Markus 4 liefert nicht nur Beispiele als Warnung vor möglichen Gefahren, sondern auch eine Hoffnung, wie der Heilige Geist in uns wirkt. 2 Korinther 4:3-7,16 3 Wenn aber unser Evangelium verhüllt ist, so ist es bei denen verhüllt, die verlorengehen; 4 bei den Ungläubigen, denen der Gott dieser Weltzeit die Sinne verblendet hat, sodass ihnen das helle Licht des Evangeliums von der Herrlichkeit des Christus nicht aufleuchtet, welcher Gottes Ebenbild ist. 5 Denn wir verkündigen nicht uns selbst, sondern Christus Jesus, dass er der Herr ist, uns selbst aber als eure Knechte um Jesu willen. 6 Denn Gott, der dem Licht gebot, aus der Finsternis hervorzuleuchten, er hat es auch in unseren Herzen licht werden lassen, damit wir erleuchtet werden mit der Erkenntnis der Herrlichkeit Gottes im Angesicht Jesu Christi. 7 Wir haben aber diesen Schatz in irdenen Gefäßen, damit die überragende Kraft von Gott sei und nicht von uns. 16 Darum lassen wir uns nicht entmutigen; sondern wenn auch unser äußerer Mensch zugrunde geht, so wird doch der innere Tag für Tag erneuert. Römer 12:2 2 Und passt euch nicht diesem Weltlauf an, sondern lasst euch [in eurem Wesen] verwandeln durch die Erneuerung eures Sinnes, damit ihr prüfen könnt, was der gute und wohlgefällige und vollkommene Wille Gottes ist. Psalm 1:2 2 sondern seine Lust hat am Gesetz des Herrnund über sein Gesetz nachsinnt Tag und Nacht. Römer 10:17 17 Demnach kommt der Glaube aus der Verkündigung, die Verkündigung aber durch Gottes Wort. Markus 4 14 Der Sämann sät das Wort. 15 Die am Weg aber sind die, bei denen das Wort gesät wird, und wenn sie es gehört haben, kommt sogleich der Satan und nimmt das Wort weg, das in ihre Herzen gesät worden ist.  16 Und gleicherweise, wo auf steinigen Boden gesät wurde, das sind die, welche das Wort, wenn sie es hören, sogleich mit Freuden aufnehmen; 17 aber sie haben keine Wurzel in sich, sondern sind wetterwendisch. Später, wenn Bedrängnis oder Verfolgung entsteht um des Wortes willen, nehmen sie sogleich Anstoß.  18 Und die, bei denen unter die Dornen gesät wurde, das sind solche, die das Wort hören, 19 aber die Sorgen dieser Weltzeit und der Betrug des Reichtums und die Begierden nach anderen Dingen dringen ein und ersticken das Wort, und es wird unfruchtbar.  20 Und die, bei denen auf das gute Erdreich gesät wurde, das sind solche, die das Wort hören und es aufnehmen und Frucht bringen, der eine dreißigfältig, der andere sechzigfältig, der dritte hundertfältig. 26 Und er sprach: Mit dem Reich Gottes ist es so, wie wenn ein Mensch den Samen auf die Erde wirft 27 und schläft und aufsteht, Nacht und Tag, und der Same keimt und geht auf, ohne dass er es weiß. 28 Denn die Erde trägt von selbst Frucht, zuerst den Halm, danach die Ähre, dann den vollen Weizen in der Ähre. 29 Wenn aber die Frucht es zulässt, schickt er sogleich die Sichel hin; denn die Ernte ist da. Hebräer 4:12 12 Denn das Wort Gottes ist lebendig und wirksam und schärfer als jedes zweischneidige Schwert, und es dringt durch, bis es scheidet sowohl Seele als auch Geist, sowohl Mark als auch Bein, und es ist ein Richter der Gedanken und Gesinnungen des Herzens.  Jesaja 55:11 11 genau so soll auch mein Wort sein, das aus meinem Mund hervorgeht: Es wird nicht leer zu mir zurückkehren, sondern es wird ausrichten, was mir gefällt, und durchführen, wozu ich es gesandt habe!
