Books That Make You Consciously Adventure with Your Child, or the Child In Your Life Whimsical stories have a place in many a child's—and, by extension, grown-up's—heart, helping to inspire us and nurture a sense of wonder. Nowadays, however, that sense of wonder is compromised by the intensifying emphasis on screen-time, structured learning, timelines, and the chronic pressures of school and success. Such things are intense for us adults. So what must they be like for kids growing up today? Laura Leone's new book, Conscious Kid-Adventures with Zane: Imagine & Create, features an author-led audio meditation and engaging coloring book activities, all designed to nurture children's well-being. Motivated by a desire to provide a mindful activity for her young child during COVID lockdowns, Laura is passionate about bringing metaphysical awareness to our youth, and so established Starseed Metaphysical Shop Publishing™️ and authored the “Conscious Kid-Adventures with Zane” series. Laura Leone, M.B.A., M.A. is the founder of Starseed Metaphysical Shop LLC, which covers the brands Starseed Metaphysical Shop Publishing™ and Starseed Cosmetics™. A mom, stepmom, and the daughter of a Mexican immigrant, Laura is also an Air Force veteran, and has been in public service for over twenty years as a certified fraud examiner. A Rutgers researcher recently found that having a strong sense of belonging at school could mitigate suicidal tendencies among Black students. In fact, the research showed that as Black adolescents' sense of belonging decreased, their risk for suicidal ideation and attempts increased by as much as 35%. What does it mean for a child to feel accepted and valued at school? What role do parents and teachers play? And how can we create a sense of belonging for all students? In this episode, Ramon Stephens joins Kevin to share how we can create a sense of belonging for all our students. Meet Ramon Ramon Stephens is The Conscious Kid's founder and executive director an education nonprofit dedicated to supporting families, educators, and organizations in learning about and taking action against systemic inequality and racism. https://www.ramonstephensphd.com/ https://www.theconsciouskid.org/ This is, What I Want to Know.

We're talking all about hobbies in our homeschool: the why, the how, and all the ways these seemingly trivial activities and interests can actually unlock deep learning, self-confidence, and lifelong joy for our kids. Takeaways -Hobbies are something we do because we want to, and doing something because you want to helps us focus and learn more. -Hobbies create a sense of success more than we might experience doing things we don't want to do. Hobbies help us to spiral UP! -Hobbies support mental health and emotional regulation. -Hobbies give our kids a noncoercive experience of learning. They help us learn to love learning and enjoy the process of hard work. -Hobbies get us into a flow state. They build our confidence to try new things and explore more. -Hobbies reduce stress. Making time for hobbies now helps our kids establish the lifelong habit of cultivating hobbies. -A flexible schedule and routine gives us time to explore hobbies. -When kids have time for hobbies, they'll come back to the table refreshed. -Encourage and support hobbies--even ones we don't understand and ones that happen on (gasp!) screens. -Homeschool can be built around hobbies or playing, with academics in between—because hobbies are learning! -Create excitement about the day by putting hobbies first, followed by hard work. -Kids are figuring out who they are and how to have a full life when they explore their interests. -What not to do: -turn their hobby into an academic thing -invalidate their screen-based hobbies -go overboard or get over involved It's all happening on Patreon! Raising confident kids can be inconvenient, uncomfortable, and challenging--but it's so worth it! And we can't talk about raising confident kids without talking about raising ourselves, too. This important work is woven into what we do every day through listening to and trusting our kids, modeling how we show up in the world, and advocating for ourselves and setting boundaries. Watch your homeschool learning atmosphere come alive and your relationships blossom as you and your children embrace and express yourselves more fully TOGETHER. Takeaways -What our kids say and think matters-- they know themselves and what they need MORE than we do. -Listening to our kids and valuing what they say will help them learn their voice is important. -As homeschool parents, we make lots of plans, but listening to our kids when they tell us something isn't working and changing our plans sends a strong message that our kids can listen, value, and trust themselves. -What do they want to learn? How do they want to learn? -We want them to be able to advocate for themselves as adults, so we have to know it starts at home, it starts with us. It's all happening on Patreon! In this episode we talk all about the ways we can get perfectionistic in homeschooling and parenting. Striving for excellence is one thing but that can easily slide into perfectionism. We talk about our own perfectionistic tendencies and their consequences. We also talk about why it's actually a good thing to not complete the curriculum or have a messy house, for example. We chose this episode because it's about the ordinary stuff of life that we all need to process! It's check-in day, which is quickly becoming our favorite! This week we update each other on past all-important LTWs. We also get real about what's going well, what needs tweaking, and how we're doing at self-care. We do this because so much growing happens in the processing. We don't have all the answers, and even if we did, they might not be the answers you need! We're just gonna say it: You don't have to do school this year. In this episode, we're talking about why it's ok to skip academics and prioritize mental health and life learning. This is specific to our current pandemic circumstances, but it also applies to any season of life when things just aren't “normal”: sickness, job loss, moving, traveling, having a baby. Because whatever you're living through, THAT is the learning experience. Takeaways -Even if you were homeschooling before the pandemic, this way of homeschooling isn't normal. -Stress is high, for us and for our kids. And stress makes learning harder. -What are our kids learning besides academics, that might need to take precedence? -Kids are learning things like empathy, figuring out their own interests, managing stress, creating healthy relationships and boundaries, self care, etc. They are getting real life experience in how to deal with real life experiences. -Ask yourself why you are doing academics. Is it because you think you need to get through the material or your kids will be “behind”? What are the outcomes of “pushing through”? -We get to be their guide and support them through these experiences now. They're building a tool box that they can use for their whole lives. This is the fifth and final episode in our "How We Homeschool" series. We've talked with different homeschool parents all season to hear about their philosophies, insights, and experiences. We're closing out this season with someone who was on our dream guest list from Day 1—and Rachel Jepson Wolf did not disappoint! Rachel and her two kids (now teens) have been homeschooling from the beginning when Rachel made an unexpected U-turn on the way to Kindergarten. Their eclectic, project-based homeschool style is all about making space for who her kids are. We talk through how they've utilized a destination-based approach to some learning, what it's like homeschooling teens, their current routine and rhythm, and the impact that COVID has had on connecting with community as long-term secular homeschoolers. We loved this conversation from start to finish, and we know you will, too. Rachel Jepson Wolf is the owner and founder of LüSa Organics, a body care company specializing in herbal balms, soaps, and baby care. Rachel and her husband Pete have raised and homeschooled their two kids in rural southwestern Wisconsin. Rachel is the author of two books: Herbal Adventures, a wildcrafting book for kids and their families, and The Unplugged Family Activity Book a treasure trove of screen-free fun. You can find her online at rachelwolfclean.com and on Instagram (her business is there, too) and Facebook. We have MORE with Rachel available when you join our $5 Squad on Patreon! David Johnson is a packaging engineer and Hasbro insider for Project Veritas. He entered the public light after bravely exposing the critical race theory ideology being pushed at Hasbro by a contractor called The Conscious Kid, which believes that babies can be racist and that five-year-old kids can be just as racist as their parents. In this episode, Sienna Mae Heath talks with David about being liberty-minded and politically independent, and how he became motivated to do his part to save this country. This is the fourth episode in our "How We Homeschool" series. We're talking with different homeschool parents all season to hear about their philosophies, insights, and experiences. Deb Shin is a video games marketer turned homeschooler. Deb shares about her homeschool to unschool journey—from Charlotte Mason homeschooling to realizing she was inadvertently school-at-home homeschooling, followed by her initial skepticism about unschooling to becoming self-directed unschoolers blending video games and modern media with a literature-rich learning lifestyle. Deb also gives us a glimpse into a "day-in-the-life" and her approach to finding community. We have MORE with Deb available when you join our $5 Squad on Patreon! Connect with Deb on Instagram. We're tackling a common homeschool conundrum: socialization. Listener Leigh writes, "A topic that is on my mind a lot is community and socialization. This topic feels a bit taboo in homeschool communities. We say, 'It's all socializing!' and don't address the very real needs of kids to have peers and a close group of friends." In this Question & Processing episode from Patreon, we're sharing our own thoughts on this often misunderstood concept. We've answered dozens of listener questions like this one on Patreon, including -supporting kids who are afraid to make mistakes, -finding workable routines, -delaying formal academics, -balancing kids' different learning styles and needs, and more! Because she is not a DEI educator, Kira shares who she is learning from and what the application looks like in her home. "We cannot help the next generation to dismantle racism, challenge racial inequality, and imagine an America of inclusion, if we, as white parents, do not openly discuss the oppression and injustices that are inherent in the very design of our country, which was established by white men who believed that they were the superior race." - Elisabeth Lepine Today's discussion includes: Appropriate vs. inappropriate resources (6:22) Apron Education and Read Like a Rock Star Teaching (7:46) The Conscious Kid, Little Justice Leaders and Brownicity (10:01) The framework Kira uses in her house (11:56) Modeling action and helping kids learn to take action (19:34) How to talk about the complexities and when we get it wrong (23:11) Accept the discomfort - if we're not educating ourselves, we're not doing the work (25:36) Gracefully receiving feedback so we can do better (29:09) Thanks for joining us today for this important topic. And the annual contest has begun to find the fattest bear in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Preserve.

The children's publishing industry has long neglected the stories and voices of Black, brown, indigneous, Muslim, Jewish, disabled, transgender and queer peoples - and so many more groups. In this episode, Laura Gruppo, a mom of two, librarian-in-training, and founder of the Instagram account, Laura's Little Bookshelf, shares what she's learned about diversity in children's literature, why books should serve as both “mirrors” and “windows,” and what to do about offensive books. She also shares some of her favorite books and resources. For more recommendations, follow her on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/lauraslittlebookshelf/ (@LaurasLittleBookshelf). About Laura GruppoLaura Gruppo was born and raised in New York City and now lives in Northern Virginia with her husband and their two young daughters. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and is currently a graduate student in the online Master of Library and Information Science degree program at San José State University. She is a passionate advocate for family literacy, early childhood education, book access, and diversity in children's literature. In this episode I'm sharing my conversation with Psychologist Dr. Angel Montfort. Together we explore the impact of racism on mental health, physical health, and relationships. We discuss ways we can begin to talk to our children about race, why raising "color blind" children is not the answer, and navigating difficult conversations about privilege. Dr. Montfort shares the disparities that continue to exist in the peripartum wellness world for people of color. We identify resources and Dr. Montfort shares ways that we can begin to take steps TODAY to address the racial disparities experienced in our communities. You can continue to follow Dr. Angel's work on social media @drangelmontfort and at www.cfmmh.com. Join me and my close friend, Brent Corbett, in this expansive discussion on the heavy topic of racism and black lives matter. Brent shares a little bit of his history and his journey into the world of motivational speaking. He walks us through his perspective as a black man in regards to racism and gently walks us through ways we can begin to become more positively involved in this narrative. This discussion is far from black and white (no pun intended) and makes a point of highlighting all sides of the narrative. I so appreciate Brent's patient and gentle manner as he sheds some light on this powerful movement. I would LOVE to hear what you decide to do and what you are discovering along the way. If you do any of these tag me on an Instagram story or send a DM of the book you purchased or the documentary you are watching! I know that together we can begin to inspire ourselves and others to continue to educate themselves on the topic of racism, empower themselves to join the narrative and truly become enabled to create tangible change.
*ANNOUNCEMENT* So This One Time would like to firmly state that we stand with the Black Lives Matter movement in solidarity. We have included several resources below so we may all continue to educate ourselves on the harmful and lasting effects of systemic racism. We seek to learn, grow, support, and fight for racial justice. Today, tomorrow, and always: BLACK LIVES MATTER. ~ Happy Tuesday, fam! This week, Alyssa talks about ancient Greek glue huffing and how that *maybe* doesn't translate to the best life advice. Later, Megan walks us through Zeus' daddy issues and advises us to maybe not insult a Greek god/goddess unless you fancy a career change to "houseplant" (honestly, tempting). We will be postponing the two episodes planned for this week. Instead, you will find a list of resources on educating yourself on racism and taking action against white supremacy (below). While I feel overwhelmed, I cannot begin to imagine what it's like to live in fear because of the color of my skin. I will never be able to understand that experience.
