We're back with another episode of The Chrome Cast podcast and on this week's show, we discuss some new, interesting hardware we've been testing. If you've been listening to the show or reading the site lately, you know that we have been working hard to get through our reviews of the Chromebook Plus models announced in October. So it was a nice change of pace when the Logitech Casa Pop-Up Desk and Lenovo Chromebox Micro arrived at our office this week. We've been anxiously waiting for the Logitech Casa to arrive for a few reasons. First and foremost, we wanted to ensure that the keyboard and trackpad work with ChromeOS as seamlessly as we hoped, since Logitech went above and beyond to make this a Works With Chromebook-certified product. And secondly, we wanted to see if the hardware was good enough to justify the $180 price tag. Listen in to see what Robby thinks and check out our recent unboxing video to see the Casa in action. The second half of the show is all about Lenovo's interesting new take on a Chromebox: the Chromebox Micro. We've been excited to see this Chromebox is truly pocket-sized so as soon as it arrived, we opened the box and I popped it straight into my pocket. No problem! Oh, and we've already discovered that it is the first Chromebox we've ever tested that can be run off of a portable power bank. Outside of many standard Enterprise or home-desktop setups, the Lenovo Chromebox Micro opens the door for some unique use cases that we are excited to try out. Maybe a portable setup with AR glasses? Stay tuned as we test and experiment with this new Chromebox. If you are excited about this Chromebox, send us a message or hit us up on X and explain why - we're curious why it seems like so many of you are interested in this Chromebox. We also made sure to squeeze in a "Hot Take" at the end of the show so make sure to stick around for that to hear Robby's ode to the original Google WiFi. I hope you enjoy the show! Cheers! In this episode of The Chris and Andre Show, the guys talk about mesh router setups and diy versus professional installation, spend a bunch of time reviewing movies and comparing DC and Marvel on many different levels, take time to address the recent tragic events in the US, and close things out with plenty of politics. (00:00:58) Technology - The guys share their experiences of updating their home wifi to a mesh system, with Andre using the TPLink Deco M5 and Chris going with the Google Wifi system. They also share their disdain for Linksys after years of being the de facto wifi router and the difference between Chris and Andre when it comes to home installations. (00:15:48) Pop Culture - Andre watched Justice League: The Snyder Cut and explains why he thought it was much better than the original. Chris doubts a 4-hour movie would have sat well with theater audiences, the guys debate the casting choices, almost get into a fight over who is the best Batman casting, then discuss the larger comparison of heroes from both the Marvel and DC universes. Chris hasn't gotten to Falcon & Winter Soldier yet but vows to get caught up for the next episode. (00:53:48) Life - The guys take time to address the recent litany of mass shootings that have occurred in the past couple of weeks in the United States, which leads them to recall all of the horrible things that have happened with no actual changes occurring afterwards to curb the violence. (01:17:18) Politics - The former White House resident is reportedly starting his own social media platform which has the guys wondering just how big of a scam that will end up being, Chris warns against continuing to keep him in the news, and Andre talks about the recent drop in Republican party membership and links it to their current “platform.” Chris tries to bring everything back to NC State (of course…), only to knock his microphone cable loose and get completely off track. Fortunately for everyone, he is able to rebound and points out how the national media trolling State fans is the same thing Fox News does to liberals. The guys debate which, if any, news networks are still worth anything.

Welcome to episode 190 ("Jason on the Apple Edge") of the EdTech Situation Room from September 9, 2020, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed forthcoming announcements by Apple for the Apple Watch and iPad ecosystems, the return of Google Maps to the Apple Watch, and Apple's compelling arguments in litigation with Epic Games over Fortnight App Store payments. A review of Android 11, the integration of Google WiFi app functions into Google Home, and the possible demise of the open source FireFox web browser were also highlighted. T-Mobile's plan to give limited free data plan hotspots to 10 million U.S. students, China's nationwide ban of MIT's Scratch programming software for students, and the question of whether or not China and the United States are reaching a competitive tipping point in relations were explored. A rather wild story of disinformation over 5G cell towers in Peru leading to a hostage situation rounded out the show's news. Geeks of the Week included a new tutorial video by Wes helping students change their Google password, and 3 tool recommendations from Jason to combat browser tab overload. Topics: -As Sam ventures out to clients again, he realizes he is not prepared for some basic functionality out in the world. -Both Joe & Jerry are fancy coffee drinkers -Jerry was in for a shock as he walks in the door to a client where they were not practicing the same measures that he was for safety. -Joe was hopeful of a video from Jerry’s incident but no such luck. -Sam thinks he’s taking the brave approach of assisting a client in setting up Google WiFi remotely. That’s just a regular workday for Joe. -Google seems to require the Google WiFi app for setup, then the Google Home app moving forward. -Google WiFi vs Eero. Which would you choose? -The iOS screen sharing via QuickTime didn’t work for Sam and Joe recalls having a similar issue lately. -All this discussion of remote access get Joe all riled up again about screen recording on macOS. -A once exciting and now disappointing “feature” of Ubiquiti UniFi was up alerts. Sam figured this would be a great way to find out once a device came back online but instead, he received repeated and unnecessarily alerts throughout the day. So much so that he had to turn this feature off. -Joe is in for quite a surprise while attempting to remotely upgrade a client to macOS 10.15.5. His client ended up on the beta of Big Sur! He had to do some extra work to create a script in Addigy using the seedutil command. This would allow him to get the status of computers in the Developer Program. Thanks to Shawn Maddock for pointing him in the right direction with seedutil. Joe has submitted those as scripts and custom facts for the community. -Sam also mentions managing beta program access via MDM configuration profile. -A bug that may occur when enrolling into the Big Sur beta is that your computer will display a message stating that “your computer is being managed by swscan”, as noted in the developer documentation: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/macos-release-notes/macos-big-sur-11-beta-release-notes

Meghan and Chris talk about painting their house, new tech, a mattress delivery, and feeling consistently more and more overwhelmed. They also share some funny Chick-Fil-A stories, and a tough story about how Chris has been disrespecting and silencing Meghan. This is the first Present Tenses episode in which we really dig into a fight! It was a tough conversation, and Chris (that's me!) was totally in the wrong. He'll be more respectful and attentive to Meghan's ways of communicating from now on! Give it a listen! And if you're interested, we'd love to hear your thoughts on our new Facebook group! Just click here to join, or search for Present Tenses Podcast on Facebook. Show Notes Our Purple Mattress and Bed Frame will be delivered and assembled by tomorrow night! Although the Nest Thermostat didn't work, the cameras and home security system sure do. Chris uses Google Wifi to set up a strong wifi signal throughout the whole house, so there's no weak spots in the basement, garage, or back yard. We're so excited to start Blue Apron this week! What we're thankful for '17 Each year at this time of year we do a show where we discuss what we are thankful for. There are the obvious things to be thankful for like our families, especially our wives who put up with our home theater obsessions. And of course we are thankful for you, the listener/reader of our show. So as is tradition over the last many Thanksgivings, on today's show we give you our list of consumer electronics things we are thankful for. For 2017: Ara's List: DirecTV Now (IPTV) - This is a follow on to last years Cord Cutter. DirecTV Now and all the other IPTV companies have made it easy to take your TV with you on the go. Plus you don't need to install any special hardware. Download some apps and you are good to go. My TV bill went from over $200 to $35! It's not perfect. I'm still waiting on a cloud based DVR and the quality is less than DirecTV but It's still pretty good! Movies Anywhere - It used to be that if I bought a disc and it only had a Ultraviolet digital code I couldn't watch it on my AppleTV. Then I added Vudu which allowed me to watch the movies but I had to use either iTunes or Vudu. Now with Movies Anywhere I can watch them all in one app! Falling Prices and Larger Screens - 85 inches for less than $4K?? Are you kidding me. This is a no brainer. Or if your room isn't big enough for an 85 inch TV how about 55 inch UHD with Dolby Vision for $500? Yes it's a good time to be alive! Netflix/Amazon/Hulu - When I was growing up there were three networks for TV and only about 20 hours of programming. Sure we used to read and visit with people but where's the fun in that? Now with the addition of streaming we get more content than we can watch. Throw in HBO, USA, AMC, and others competing for your limited free time and you can pretty much guarantee that one of these networks will create content that you will be interested in. Now I just need to learn how to get by on less sleep! DIY Audio - I am having a blast building speakers. The quality is quite good. Can you buy better speakers for much less hassle? Of course you can. But there is something really gratifying about building and listening to speakers you built. You can start out with a simple kit or design something that says something about you. Either way you'll have fun! And since these speakers will probably still be working long after you are gone, you can leave a little of you behind for your family to remember you by. Braden's List Mesh Wifi - We just moved into a new house and it's a bit older than our prior house. The prior house had ethernet run to every room. The current does not so we have to rely even more on wifi. Not sure what the walls are made of in this old house, concrete, titanium, your-wifi-no-workatonium, but wifi is terrible. Without mesh wifi like Google Wifi, we'd be without Internet in places where we really want it. 4K Televisions - There's the obvious reason we've talked about to love 4K TVs or Ultra High Definition itself, it pushed 3D straight out of our lives. But it has also helped to push down prices of all TVs across the board - first by pushing 1080p TV prices down, then by starting a vicious price war for 4k TVs that has included a bunch of new bargain manufacturers. Just like the early push in HDTV, the bargain brands may not survive, but for now they're really helping us all get 4K TV upgrades. Netflix (also Amazon, Hulu, HBO online, etc) - The classic joke about Cable used to be that we had 300 channels but nothing to watch. Not anymore. When was the last time you even channel surfed? You don't have to anymore. If there's nothing on the DVR, or nothing you're feeling into at that moment, you just pop open one of the streaming apps and see what's there. You'll probably find a movie you remember coming out that you never saw, or a new series someone recommended that you haven't started yet. There's always something on now. Automation devices - Yes. I had this on my list last year. But honestly with every smart device I add, it just keeps getting better. That's the beauty of DIY automation, you can add to it in small steps, piece by piece as you have time and resources to get it done. This year I joined the automated door lock club and it's awesome. The kids don't need house keys. Friends and family can get in without having to hide a key. It's great. Also added a smart doorbell. It's super annoying, but also really cool too. Home Depot - I really wanted to say Amazon, but after the year we had with them, I just couldn't get myself to do it. It is an amazing company. And I bought the most items from them to help us prepare our old home to be sold and get settled in the new one, including a faucet and a new TV (but not that TV just yet). But the place I visited second most to get everything for the move out and move in was Home Depot. So I'm thankful for Home Depot always having just what I needed, and when they didn't Amazon did.
