This week's episode is with an amazing Film & TV Producer, Professor, Cartographer of the Media Universe, and Anna's friend, Evan Shapiro! Evan has had some incredible jobs over the years working for big corporate media companies, producing major comedy series like Portlandia, teaching at NYU, and his latest venture- starting a podcast with his daughter about cancel culture! (Brave, right?! It's so funny.) Evan gives some of the best advice we've had on this podcast. He talks to us about the rise and fall of major media companies, and what he liked and disliked about working for some of these corporations, and how he's able to fuel his creativity into his life now. He tells us stories about running his own business, a creative marketing agency working with Broadway's biggest shows, and developing Portlandia for IFC. Evan and Anna talk about finding your passion and figuring out a way to make money doing it, which is really what a job should be. And also Broadway...they're big theater nerds. You're going to love this episode and feel empowered about work after listening to it. So to take him down a notch (just kidding) go listen to his new podcast, "Cancel Culture" with his daughter and her comedian friends who have to write a joke for Evan about a questionable topic that could definitely get him cancelled! Here is a severely cut down version of his response. I'm more influenced by music than movies. I like music because it operates more at the dream level. It's like reading books as a child. You can imagine the story being told, and each piece of instrumentation can be used to add something to a story that you can't say with a picture or a word. I particularly like lush, intricate pop music like The Beatles, XTC, or Elvis Costello. I also like punk rock and dream pop, and really dreamy old Velvet Underground and R.E.M., and a lot of classic rock. Also great lyricists like Bob Dylan, Springsteen, and Joni Mitchell. And also Bowie & Prince, of course. I also get a lot of inspiration from travel, history and current events. Audio Editing by Adam Greenlee
Comedy Clubs to corporate comedy is a move that some comedians want to do, but it usually doesn't happen all at once. Here's 1 way comedian Jan McInnis did it.
Shereen Kassam defines herself as a corporate America addict, stand-up comedy lover, speaker of all things fun, podcasting enthusiast, improv teacher and shoe junkie. What a list! Shereen's dad wanted her to be a doctor, but she couldn't cope with the blood so instead, after her degree at Brown University, she became a strategy consultant, and now works in-house for Disney in Florida, where she grew up. Shereen was a shy child, but tried stand-up for the first time after reluctantly escorting her drunk housemate to a comedy club. It's fair to say she's progressed quickly, winning multiple awards with her show, Funny Brown Girl, and performing worldwide from New York to Saigon. Shereen draws on her relationship with her South Asian Muslim parents, and is not afraid to mine material that others might be nervous of tackling. She is an honest, hilarious podcast guest and it was such a pleasure to chat to her! In this episode we discuss: - Shereen's early life and how her career choices were shaped by conversations with her parents - Her career in strategy consulting and how her corporate life offers an unexpected degree of creativity - How she unexpectedly found stand up comedy and discovered the joy of being on stage - Her podcast, Creative Breakthrough, and the pleasure and satisfaction she draws from that - Her future aspirations for her career, succeeding in her goals and her aims in comedy Where to find Shereen: - The Funny Brown Girl website: https://funnybrowngirl.com - The Creative Breakthrough podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/creative-breakthrough-jumpstart-your-creative-career/id1437082823 - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/funnybrowngirl/ - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shereenkassam/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/funnybrowngirl - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FunnyBrownGirl/ - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/shereenkassam Follow us for more: - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/smashingtheceiling/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/smashingceiling - Facebook: www.facebook.com/smashingtheceiling - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/naomi-mellor-171550150/
Want to know what Corporate Comedy gigs are? Interested in masturbation on the dark web? Do you know the difference between prostate and prostrate? Kerry Godliman is this week’s guest with all the answers. Kerry, as a successful stand up and actor, (Derek, Mascots, Bad Move, Carters Get Rich) shares her thoughts about age, depression and anxiety with grace and insight. What made it very special was that she shared these thoughts with us on her actual birthday. It’s difficult not to love Kerry but Leon made a pretty good go of it as we talk about the pressure of maintaining friendships, the have-kids and don’t-have-kids social circles, the protocols of grief and the huge disappointment of not being examined anally.
Comedian Nate Armbruster returns to the show to talk about what it's like to do stand-up comedy and how it feels to make people laugh. Comedy can be a rough road, at times. Many people don't even know it exists. You could be driving on the highway next to a comedian on the way to a gig and not even know it. Sometimes even the comedian needs to laugh. Listen to hear Jane and Nate discuss comedians, laughter and much more on this edition of Voices of Vision.
